Message from the CEO
Relationships make the world go ‘round…and they are the source of business development, growth, and success. Almost everything of great value that takes place in our businesses and/or personal lives is based on relationships. In our technology filled world, which serves us so very well, especially when it comes to information and efficiencies, we often times miss the opportunities for new relationships. Creating new connections is crucial to any business, big or small. Why struggle with phone calls or emails when you can put your business on display at the one place where face-to-face conversations are the norm and where there is fertile ground for businesses development, growth, and success?
This year’s Business Connections, taking place April 20, from 1 – 7 p.m., at the Prairie Capital Convention Center, will once again serve as the place for building relationships with businesses and organizations coming together under one roof to show their services and products to hundreds of attendees. The Sangamon CEO Businesses will also be present for the third year in a row. The Sangamon CEO program is a
collaboration between businesses and school districts in Sangamon County. It is a year-long, accredited high school class which connects high school students to local business leaders and allows them to “experience” the challenges and rewards of running a business. Students then utilize what they learn to create an actual business using real money, including branding and logos along with business and marketing plans. Each CEO student will have a booth to display their business, answer your questions, and present you with their products and services.
Prior to the opening of the show floor, we will host our always popular Speed Networking event from 9 – 11 a.m., followed by the State of The City Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Each of these requires a separate registration and Speed Networking is limited to 110 participants, so call our office at 217-525-1173, or visit our website at gscc.org to register today. The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that after a comprehensive self-review, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has awarded us with 5-Star Accreditation. Changes for 2017
This year, Business Connections features a new floor plan, reduced booth prices, and a renewed focus on Always Buy Chamber (ABC). ABC encourages members to support fellow members, which are businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to our area’s growth and progress by being a part of The Chamber. As a member, you are challenged, whenever possible, to look for opportunities to do business with other members.
Always Buy Chamber
Business Connections provides members a unique chance to make new member-to-member connections. With all of the technology today and social media interactions, Business Connections offers a chance to get out of the office, away from the computer and interact face-to-face with potential new customers and existing clients. The Chamber encourages members to Always Buy Chamber and support their fellow members!
Speed Networking
With typically over 90 participants, this is The Chamber’s biggest Speed Networking of the year! It offers businesses extensive exposure and the opportunity to develop new leads in a structured, fast-paced format. Participants are assigned to a table of up to nine other people and each attendee has two minutes to make a presentation about their company and product or service. Each person gives their presentation four times to a different group of prospects. Advance registration is required.
Business After Hours
Business After Hours at Business Connections is one of the largest of the year with food and drinks available directly on the show room floor for a fun and informal networking experience.

State of the City Address on April 20
Join your peers and local leaders for a status report on the City of Springfield. Mayor Jim Langfelder will review accomplishments and challenges from the past year, and outline future priorities at The Chamber’s annual State of the City Luncheon. The event will be held on Thursday, April 20, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. The event begins promptly at 11:30 a.m. and is slated to adjourn by 12:45 p.m.

Cyber Security Seminar coming in May Presenting Sponsor
The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce invites you to a seminar on cyber security, presented by Heyl Royster. This seminar will be held on Wednesday, May 3, at the Dove Conference Center (619 E. Mason St.). Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. and the program will follow from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Chamber survey clarifies perceptions of Springfield airport service
Recommends using True Cost Calculator before booking travel In November 2016, The Chamber conducted an online survey to identify existing business ridership practices and perceptions regarding air service to and from Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport. The electronic survey, focused on business travel, was completed by 251 respondents. As you’ll see in the sidebar, the perceptions did not match the realities. Given the growth and performance of Springfield air service, including the decline in late and cancelled flights, The Chamber is asking all businesses and organizations to consider making a commitment to use the Springfield airport for all business travel when economically feasible. How do you know if flying from
Springfield is really the most economical choice? When you consider several factors, including the cost of flights, parking, mileage to other airports, and the value of your time, it is almost always the most economical choice. The airport website, flyspi.com, provides a tool called “The True Cost Calculator” to assist you regarding the true cost of business (and personal) travel as you consider the real cost of your travel. The economic impact of the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport continues to grow. Your commitment to use our local airport for business travel will not only ensure the
continued growth of the airport’s economic impact in our community, it will solidify current flight schedules and increase our chances of additional flights. Thirty-three local businesses made commitments to use our local airport during recent meetings of our Strategic Leadership Council and Chamber Board of Directors. Upcoming events for ELEVATE Springfield E L E VAT E S p r i n g f i e l d Yo u n g Professionals, which focuses on professional development, leadership, and mentoring, has some exciting spring events scheduled. The next CEO Roundtable event is being held on Wednesday, May 10 at 12:00 p.m. at The Chamber office. This event allows young professionals to network with area CEOs and have casual conversations about their career path, successes, failures, and how to
be successful in the workplace. This event will include CEOs Hy Bunn of Bunn-O-Matic Corporation, Elly Mackus of Security Bank, and Brad Zara of Zara’s Collision Center. Registration for this event is open and only available to ELEVATE Springfield members. The first CEO Roundtable event, held earlier this year, received wonderful feedback from both young professionals and the CEOs that participated. The other two ELEVATE Springfield events are happening in conjunction with The Chamber’s Business After Hours. ELEVATE members can attend the April and May events at no cost. The April Business After Hours is being held at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center, as part of Business Connections,
on April 20 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The May 18 Business after Hours is being held at TROXELL from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. These events are great opportunities for young professionals to network and connect with Chamber members as well as gain exposure for their company/business. Chamber seeks members’ input on workforce needs employment practices, worker needs, and other workforce challenges. The overall goal is to assist the company with any employment barriers they may have, as well as identify community-wide challenges that can be addressed through additional programming and/or facilitation with the educational community.
Finding qualified employees continues to be a growing challenge for local employers, and The Chamber is working to address this issue through programming, facilitation between the business and education communities, and ongoing discussions with its members. To gain additional information about short- and long-term needs, we are seeking employers who are willing to meet and discuss their specific workforce challenges. This meeting will take about an hour and will explore

The Chamber has also invested in preparing minority African-American males for their desired career paths through the Open Door Mentorship Program at Lincoln Land Community College. The program provides internships through local businesses and organizations and offers a combination of academic and business mentoring.
As part of its overall five-year workforce expansion strategy, The Chamber is addressing other workforce issues that affect local employers. This includes the purchase of a software program called Jobs EQ, a nationally recognized technology platform that delivers a careful analysis of the capacity and capability of our area’s workforce. Jobs EQ allows staff to access detailed real time data, such as employment, wages, and demographic statistics for companies that request this information. The software’s data is gathered by scientists, statisticians and PhD economists, using reliable sources such as Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and National Center for Education Statistics among many others,

Member testimonial - 490 Outreach It was over 10 years ago that I arrived in Springfield in a beat up RV that was out of gas. I was homeless, unemployed and back then, a fully active alcoholic. I wanted it to be different, I made a conscious decision for it to be different, and it has been different for a long time. When do you get to unfurl the “Mission Accomplished!” sign? When can you say you’ve “arrived”? There are many such mile markers on the way to being able to say you’ve “arrived”. In some sense, it’s a purely arbitrary decision, and a personal one that you get to decide for yourself. For my own goals of success, for my own idea of what I wanted for my own life, I knew even then what the total opposite of being a homeless unemployed alcoholic was. That was to be a dues paying member in good standing of the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a group of business owners, great and small, who are bound together by two common elements - the desire to have their community grow and prosper, and the desire to make that their personal responsibility. If one is running a corporation or company, a coffee stand or a mega-conglomerate, and you agree with those two elements, then membership is a must. The Chamber is made up of men and women who work together to grow Springfield’s economy. They are citizens who are well aware of obstacles to growth and work to help others find their way through those treacherous waters. A better community is not only great for everyone here, but for attracting more people
here, and leaving - as each generation of members in the Chamber does - a better place for those who come after them. The Chamber is the caretaker of the community, and they invest their own time, talents and money to that end. On February 20, 2017, 490 Outreach joined The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and Dean and Katie West of 490 now our organization gets to Outreach. 490 Outreach is a faith be a part of that! And that based outreach that operates sober is what I count as having living homes so as to transition “arrived”! Not only do we recovering alcoholics/addicts from have our own business up homelessness to independence. and running, not only are we helping others, but we can now be a part of a greater effort, and join in the ranks of all the other responsible local businesses! If that’s not being “arrived”, I can’t think what is!

Youth Employment Program seeks new businesses for summer The Summer Youth Employment Program will be going into full swing as the school year’s end draws closer.
The Springfield Project, the Springfield Black Chamber of Commerce and The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce are reaching out to local businesses and organizations to assist in helping some of Sangamon County’s young people, ages 15 to 21, find work this summer. The program not only develops and hones skills for students, but also provides income that can go towards helping these students continue to grow into the talented workforce our community requires every day. Over 400 youth have participated in the program over the last eight years and have told us the Summer Youth Employment Program means financial independence for the duration of employment. For other students, the work helps to fund their goals of attending college. Companies of any size are encouraged to take part in the

program. The program is looking for a participating business or organization able to take a student or two or even more and put them to work Students work four to six hours a day, four days a week, for a period of six to eight weeks. Duties can vary from general office work, to more specific tasks related to the student’s degree of study. “You put them to work; we’ll pick up the tab, unless you insist on doing both,” said Tim Rowles, Executive Director of The Springfield Project.
Any business or organization that would like to help, but cannot take a student may inquire about other ways to assist, including providing a donation to cover cost for the program.
