Q5 funding accelerates launch of downtown incubator for startup businesses
Did you know that Springfield is the largest metropolitan area in the state of Illinois that does not play host to an entrepreneurial incubator?
All of that is changing now, with the launch of Innovate Springfield (i-SPI) – a collaborative and creative space for startup businesses and social enterprise that aims to advance innovation and education and attract and retain young entrepreneurs. “We’re extremely excited about this endeavor,” said Bruce Sommer, board chair of Innovate Springfield. “i-SPI will be a valuable resource for entrepreneurs with an innovative and viable business or social venture that is relevant to our community, but may not have the resources or knowhow to effectively launch or operate it.” The focus of Innovate Springfield is to provide collaborative space and technical support to emerging business and social entrepreneurs. And while shared space and resources are important, the ability to offer education and mentoring is what will set apart its efforts. Along with business and social focus, i-SPI will house the Sangamon CEO program that offers high school seniors a unique chance to hone entrepreneurial skills and learn from local business leaders.
The Q5 Strategic Leadership Council of The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has accelerated the launch of this new effort by providing significant startup funding in 2015 and pledging additional funding for 2016.
“This aligns directly with the mission of Q5,” said Chris Hembrough, president and CEO of the Chamber. “We’re very excited about it. And just as valuable will be the interaction among the businesses within the Chamber and the members of the incubator; networking and mentoring will really help the entrepreneurs.” i-SPI will offer the community new business creation, bringing more jobs and greater wealth into the local area, Sommer said. “The people who will gain the most, besides the individual entrepreneurs participating in the incubator, will be local businesses that will experience a more diversified, innovative and younger workforce,” Sommer said. “Additionally, with job creation and wealth creation, we’ll see greater social progress. The longer-term vision of i-SPI is to establish a creative commons or innovation district, where talented residents live and work downtown in close proximity to each other, which
further attracts more talent.” Innovate Springfield will reside at the corner of Fifth and Adams streets downtown on the Old State Capitol Square and will be led by an executive director and a board of directors. “This will be a great tool for younger people with aspirations of big dreams, and also something to attract people to the Springfield community,” said John Stremsterfer, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln, which has helped fund and organize i-SPI as a supporting organization of the Community Foundation. “We’re very enthusiastic about it, and we hope the larger community will be as well.” To learn more about Innovate Springfield, visit www.innovatespringfield. org or contact Sommer at Bsommer@ innovatespringfield.org.

Q5: planning for the future The Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) is the economic development partnership lead by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Public, private, and nonprofit sectors have come together with the following goal: to grow Sangamon County by improving our ability to create jobs, attract talent and make capital investment. We have a shared vision for Springfield and Sangamon County, with the Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) acting as a catalyst to create a strong, growing economy through talent, leadership and collaboration. As Q5 approaches the last year (2016) of its second five-year cycle and we look to the next five-year phase of Q5 (2017 – 2021), we are more committed than ever to ensuring Sangamon County’s long-term prosperity and vitality. Success demands a focused, aggressive strategy, strengthened by community support and collaboration. Therefore, over the last several months, we have worked together with our investors and community partners to chart the course for our future. Thanks to the creative vision of civic and business leaders throughout the region, our strategy is in place. We will focus on five strategic priorities from 2017 – 2021:
Economic Expansion: n Identify and address the business climate through the Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program.
Urban Revitalization: n Work collaboratively with a broad group of stake holders to revitalize downtown Springfield and other urban neighborhoods. n Increase housing options in downtown Springfield and other urban neighborhoods. n Advocate for and help facilitate the progression of The Springfield Rail Improvements Project.
Workforce Expansion: n Grow, retain, and attract qualified workers, especially within the 18 – 35 age demographic, that meet local workforce demands. n Facilitate alignment of educational offerings with workforce needs of local businesses. n Create direct partnerships between local employers and K-12 education.
Diversity Advancement: n Enhance business opportunities and quality residential offerings in East Springfield, primarily in the Neighborhood of Hope. n Expand business mentoring and youth employment programs. n Increase diversity among board and commission leaders/ members in our community.
n Implement sound, competitive development policy.
n Establish Q5 Strategic Leadership Council as a changeagent for Sangamon County. n Focus the know-how and commitment of our best private and public sector minds on our biggest problems and key opportunities. n Advocate for community priorities. Why is Q5 important? No community or its economy ever stays the same, we are always moving in one direction or another. Q5 is important because it provides a vision for the future with specific strategic priorities that have the potential to be transformational for our community. Like any plan, if it is not acted upon, it will amount to nothing more than words on a page. As important as the collaboration with our investors and partners has been in developing the plan, future collaboration will be even more important to its implementation. What does Q5 mean to your business? While many Chamber members and business owners in the community have likely heard of The Chamber’s economic development arm Q5, or Quantum Growth Partnership, they may not know exactly what it is, what it does, or why it is important. So why is Q5 important? No community or its economy ever stays the same, we are always moving in one direction or another. Q5 is important because it provides a vision and a platform for growth, job creation, and capital investment in Springfield and Sangamon County. It is important because it identifies an organization committed to providing leadership and bringing community leaders and organizations together when it comes to economic development.

Prominently display the Chamber decal on the front door of your business. Studies show that people view Chamber membership as a sign of credibility for a business. Q5 Focuses on Medical Attraction While employment in the medical industry continues to grow in our community, Q5 partnered with the SIU School of Medicine, Springfield Clinic, Memorial Health System and HSHS St. John’s Hospital to collect information and data to assist with attracting medical related companies to Springfield and Sangamon County. The organizations provided information about how many doctors they currently employ, how much capital investment they have made, and their national recognitions. Some highlights include: • SIU School of Medicine is the first clinical hand transplant program in Illinois and only one of eleven hand transplant programs in the country. • HSHS St. John’s Hospital was the first hospital in the US and seventh in the world to perform LOTUS heart valve replacement surgery (2015).

New Mid-Illinois Medical District Website coming in 2016 The Chamber, through the Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5), provides administrative support to the Mid-Illinois Medical District since the State of Illinois has never provided staff or programing expenses. Q5 has issued an RFP to enhance the Medical Districts website to better showcase the medical excellence currently in Springfield and to help attract new development into the Medical District. The new website will feature communication enhancements to tell a better story of the innovation and medical breakthroughs already in the district, while also featuring available property within the Medical District. The new website will be available early 2016.

Leadership Springfield celebrates 30 years; exciting future ahead In our mission to enhance our members’ success and advance our economy, The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is proud to foster 30 years of continuous leadership development. Over 800 graduates have had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, engage in meaningful civic projects, network with fellow professionals and, most importantly, be part of a program that’s dedicated to improving our community.
Over the course of eight months, participants learn about Tourism, Community Events & the Arts; Health Care; Education; State Government; Homeland Security & Public Safety; Community 101 & Spokesperson Training; and Poverty & Diversity/Inclusion Awareness.
The purpose of Leadership Springfield is to identify, motivate and professionally develop emerging leaders from a crosssection of the community and to help them develop their potential for community leadership by exposing them to the realities, opportunities and challenges of our community.

This is a great resource for prospective participants and employers, current participants and alumni. Starting with the Class of 2017, applications must be submitted online. The current Leadership Springfield class is well underway. The participants are eager to learn more about their fellow participants and the Springfield community.
The participants are also challenged to exercise creativity and problem-solving skills by working on projects for the benefit of area not-for-profit organizations.

we’ll be developing a commemorative magazine that highlights 30 years of accomplishments by the program. This magazine will feature distinguished alumni, past projects, photos and much more! As a token of our appreciation, this magazine will be offered as a complimentary gift to all Leadership Springfield alumni. Established in 1986 by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the Junior League of Springfield, the program wouldn’t continue to remain as successful without such dedicated alumni and supportive community partners. YSPN holds 10th Trivia Night for Charity The Young Springfield Professionals Network (YSPN), which launched in 2006, hosted their 10th annual Trivia Night for Charity Nov. 13. This event was designed to assist local non-profits highlight their services and raise funds for their respective organization. Trivia Night has been such a success through the years that YSPN still organizes the event to support area non-profits. The YSPN Board chooses a different local charity each year. Past nonprofits who have benefitted from the YSPN’s hard work are The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Illinois (2014), The Matthew Project (2013), GenH Kids (2012), Girls on the Run (2011), Prevention First (2010), American Cancer Society (2009) and Mini O’Bierne Crisis Nursery (2008). The Board works for months to plan and organize the event, spending many hours on marketing and promoting the event to generate the most dollars possible for the selected charity. Sponsorships are secured from area businesses and registrations for the event are managed by the YSPN board. The event continually proves to be a great fundraiser for the chosen non-profit. Additionally, it is a great way to communicate to the community services offered, how to obtain those or how to become a volunteer. This year’s event was held at The Firefighter’s Postal Lake Club. The event featured Kevin Lust as the trivia emcee. The non-profit benefactor for 2015 is United Way’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Expansion planned for Grow Our Own This is the final segment in a three-part series about the Grow Our Own Minority Participation Program. With the Grow Our Own Minority Participation Program entering its third year, organizers are focused on expanding it in the engineering industry and beyond. Kevin Seals, chief environmental scientist at Hanson Professional Services Inc., coordinates the Grow Our Own program and said that plans are to involve other local engineering firms and then bring in businesses from other industries, such as health care, insurance and banking. “Our initial thought is that we would expand the program to our other engineering partners around town since we all do similar work, and the main goal, as the program started, was to engage students in STEM-related initiatives,” Seals said.

Hanson, the program’s manager, teamed up with the city of Springfield and Sangamon County for Grow Our Own and works with minority-based organizations, businesses, colleges and universities, the Illinois Department of Transportation and others in the Springfield community to connect students to those opportunities. “We’ve had good results in the first two years of the program,” Seals said. “We’re thinking that, eventually, we want to expand this so that it’s not limited to engineering and science, but also involve the health-care fields, since that’s a very large sector of our business here in Springfield. A new location. A new level of diabetes care. HSHS Medical Group’s Springfield Diabetes and Endocrine Center is now an affilate of Joslin Diabetes Center, an internationally recognized leader in diabetes care and management.
Our new name. On November 2, the HSHS Medical Group – Springfield Diabetes and Endocrine Center was renamed the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at HSHS Medical Group. The Joslin Diabetes Center is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and includes more than 40 locations in 17 states and three foreign countries. We will also continue to offer comprehensive endocrinology care.
Our new level of diabetes care. From its beginnings as the Joslin Clinic in 1952, the Joslin Diabetes Center has become a world-renowned pioneer in diabetes care, treatment and education. Today, it offers a wide range of services for patients with diabetes and their families, from clinical research studies and ethnicspecific initiatives to weight management programs and eye care. Simply put, the new Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at HSHS Medical Group will offer the region’s most comprehensive array of diabetes programs and services.
Our location. As part of the next chapter in our growth, we have relocated to a spacious, convenient location in Legacy Pointe near Scheels. Together with our outstanding physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners and staff, this new state-of-the-art facility will enhance our ability to provide the best diabetes care and management in Central Illinois.
