Relationships make the world go ‘round

I am a firm believer that almost anything of great value that takes place in our personal and/or business lives is based on relationships. Relationships make the world go ‘round…and they are the source of business development, growth, and success. In our technology filled world, which serves us very well, especially when it comes to information and efficiencies, we often times miss the opportunities for new relationships that lead to success. Creating new connections is crucial to any business, big or small. Why struggle with phone calls or emails when you can spend an afternoon and evening at the one place where faceto-face conversations will be the norm and where businesses and individuals will make connections for growth and success. Business Blast is a new event, a mini-business expo, taking place on April 25, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Wyndham Springfield City Centre. Business Blast will provide you with a great opportunity to build relationships, with businesses and organizations coming together under one roof to show their products and services to countless attendees. Exhibitors will find Business Blast as an excellent opportunity for increased exposure to the entire Chamber membership. However, Business Blast is not the only event at the Wyndham on April 25. Cyberthreats for small business on the rise Chamber To Hold Seminar May 2 When people hear the words “cyberattacks” and/or “cybersecurity”, most of us think that’s a problem that large corporations deal with – it will never be a problem for my business. However, several local businesses had their computer networks compromised in the last year. Not only did it cost their business thousands of dollars - it cost them several weeks of disruption to fix and fully secure their data. There are several types of cyberattacks, with the most common being: identity-theft where thieves steal credit card information, social security numbers, and passwords; hacking where individuals gain access to computer networks and download information or install computer viruses; ransomware where computer bandits gain control of your network and demand payment before giving back control to the owner. Many times, gaining access is as easy as sending bogus emails to employees to click links that look valid, or weak policies regarding password criteria or sharing of passwords. Cyberattacks are growing at an alarming rate, both in number and sophistication. The vulnerability of small businesses is also increasing because many times they don’t have IT policies or safeguards in place to protect themselves, and hackers also use them as a conduit to bigger fish – the larger corporations with which they do business. As business owners and leaders, it’s our responsibility to protect our customers’ data as well as our own. The expense to respond to an attack is usually staggering – the average cost is $200 per customer record and higher for banks and health-related businesses – and some businesses never recover from the financial burden and business interruption it causes. That’s why The Chamber is offering a seminar on how business leaders can protect their organizations. Increased business advocacy in 2018 One of The Chamber’s four core functions is our role as the leading voice OF and FOR business, as one of THE organizations that will stand in the gap to influence pro-business, pro-growth policies and procedures while opposing those that are not.

On March 2, The Chamber submitted a letter to the Mayor and Aldermen on behalf of our members and board of directors opposing the proposed new natural gas tax which was defeated by the Springfield City Council, 9-0, on March 6, 2018.

At the beginning of 2018, we promised to track local, state, and federal legislation and inform members of how it may impact their business and our community. We promised to inform and guide them when action is needed, and to provide the necessary information and most effective ways to take such action. We’ve done all of the above and more, significantly increasing our advocacy efforts during the first quarter of 2018, which we’re recapping here:

The Chamber provided members with summary information, as well as contact information, encouraging members to contact representatives opposing The Wage Lien Act (HB4324).

The Chamber Board adopted its 2018 Policy Agenda which can be found on our website at gscc.org/pages/advocacy. The Chamber worked with the private sector development community including the Capital Area REALTORS, the Springfield Area Home Builders Association, engineers and developers, to request amendments to the City of Springfield’s new Comprehensive Plan. The Chamber Development Policy Council (DPC) was concerned parts of the plan could be used by future administrations to prohibit development, and by growing voices opposed to development and capital investment. After sharing our concerns with the Mayor and Aldermen, the adoption of the plan was delayed in order to work on the appropriate amendments. The DPC worked with City staff and the Springfield/ Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission, crafting the amendments and the new Comprehensive Plan was approved by the Springfield City Council on January 16, 2018. The Chamber informed its members, particularly restaurant owners and operators, of the reported (by the SJ-R) potential for a City dine-in Tax. The Chamber encouraged members to attend the City’s first budget workshop on January 18 to stay informed and be involved in the process. Many attended the workshop during which Alderman Chuck Redpath acknowledged their presence and then assured them the reported potential dine-in tax would not happen.

The Chamber shared our support of the Fair Maps Amendment (HJRCA0043) and supported the ongoing effort to turn the process over to an independent non-partisan panel. The Chamber joined The Illinois Chamber of Commerce for a press conference sharing the recent TRIP Transportation report findings, including the need for a clear plan to address our deteriorating infrastructure, specifically our roads and bridges. The Report can be found on our website at http://business.gscc. org/TRIPreport. The Chamber hosted several events with elected officials, including a Tax Reform Roundtable with Representative Rodney Davis, a Legislative Update with Representative Darin LaHood, and a Manufacturing Roundtable, hosting Governor Bruce Rauner for a presentation and a question and answer session. State of the City Luncheon May 10

Local leaders will gather May 10 for a City of Springfield status report at the Chamber’s annual State of the City Luncheon. With the advent of UrbanSpoon, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other review-based platforms, customers have been quick to share their experiences, praising or complaining in turn. These candid reviews are actively impacting businesses - both for better and for worse.

The current state of backups for small and medium-sized businesses Any backup process that involves external media, the data has to be physically moved from place to place. A process where confidential data is exposed to the outside world where it can be lost, stolen, or damaged in transit is just not a good idea. Now, cloud backups are the popular way for a company to buy a plan, install some software, and feel secure that their data is stored in the cloud. Rarely will a small business actually know what is involved is getting all of that data back to their site after a data loss. With most big cloud backup companies, getting the first complete backup of a lot of data can often take several days. and this should be kept in mind. Most organizations backup just their files when the reality what they really need is a backup of their entire system. Full system backups can be restored in hours. Just having your files available can take days to get back up and running. When systems are down, recovery time is crucial. Many times, new customers of ours completely fail our audit of their backups and they are shocked. We may find backup software is indeed installed on the server but it has either never run or has not run in a very long time. The issue with managing backups is just that. You have to actually take the time to manage them. There is no backup technology that can be setup and forgotten about while still maintaining

a high degree of confidence that it will continue to work properly. Ideally, hard drives would never crash, and disasters would never happen. Nevertheless, I have seen organizations come to my company after a data loss after they thought they had backups but when the time actually came to rely on them, they were useless. We partner with a company that offers data recovery in a clean room, but this service can easily be thousands of dollars and there is definitely not a 100 percent success rate. This option is the absolute last resort. Self-managing your own backups can be a great way to save money but keep in mind that you must not only check your backup plan regularly, but your restoration plan as well. Submitted by MCS 19
