As we wrap up the holiday season and 2018, it provides each of us a time to reflect on the many things for which we are grateful. It has been our privilege to work with you on important business and community issues, to represent you and make sure your collective voice has been heard. We are confident your investment in membership has provided great value to you, your business, and the community at-large. Twelve months ago we said 2018 would be a year of transition, wrapping up the work of our Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5), supporting the creation of the Land of Lincoln Economic Development Corporation (EDC), and working alongside the EDC to help move our community forward. With the transition now complete, The Chamber’s energy and resources are clearly focused on our Four Core Functions: Increased Business Advocacy: In 2018, more than ever before, we fulfilled our role as the leading voice OF and FOR business, promoting and influencing pro-business, pro-growth policies and procedures, and opposing those that are not.

Through our job fairs, job board, and Connect program we will assist with workforce needs. We are also offering strategic planning and team building assistance that could change the culture and performance of your organization.
Visibility and Connections That Matter: We will recognize and celebrate member and volunteer accomplishments through the Annual Gala and Small Business Awards Luncheon. You will enjoy significant marketing opportunities through the member’s only section of our website, growing social media presence, and member-to-member advertising options. We will create strategic opportunities for you to make connections that matter through events like the Economic Outlook Breakfast, Elected Officials Reception and State of the City Luncheon.

CHURCH REDEVELOPMENT MAKING PROGRESS
Over two years ago The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, The Springfield Project, and Economic Growth Corporation (of Rock Island) began the journey of redeveloping the former First United Methodist Church at the corner of Fifth and Capitol in downtown Springfield. The redevelopment project which is owned by Economic Growth Corporation is well underway. The facility has been stabilized, completely gutted, and framing of the build out is progressing rapidly. The mixed use development, which includes 25 residential units and over 10,000 square feet of commercial space, is expected to be completed by summer 2019. The Chamber will occupy a significant portion of the commercial space, with approximately 5,000 square feet of commercial space available for lease. The 25 residential units include nine (9) two bedroom and sixteen (16) one bedroom apartments. The MIC is the members only section of the Chamber website and it gives members greater control over their business and brand name. People that visit the Chamber website have already made an important decision. They are looking for a business in our area that has the credibility of being a Chamber member. Many members realize the benefit of their membership and the value of utilizing the web and the Chamber name to promote their business. The MIC allows each member to tell their story, connect with other members, register for events, pay invoices, as well as post and view Hot Deals, job postings, events and member news. Once approved those are published on the Chamber website and social media. Members can also easily access resources, benefits, and manage their business profile by updating the business directory listing with current description, search keywords, hours of operation, and driving directions to enhance their ‘searchability’.

CHAMBER ENHANCES
ITS COMMUNICATIONS METHODS Enhanced communications are coming to members soon through two new methods: blogging and text alerts. The Chamber started posting blogs earlier this month on issues pertinent to members. The first blog relates to an employer’s request to the IRS to offer a 401(k) related student loan benefit program. Future articles will focus on the Chamber’s advocacy efforts, business resources available to members, human resource tips, and member benefits. Blogs will be posted every Monday and can be found at www.gscc.org under “News”. A link will also be shared in the weekly eUpdate newsletter.

In addition to blogging, The Chamber will begin sending text alerts to members. There will be two distribution groups from which members can choose to receive alerts: Advocacy: This distribution group will receive text messages about The Chamber’s efforts in advocating on behalf of its members through tracking, monitoring, and taking action on local, state and federal legislation. Chamber217: This distribution group will receive text messages about upcoming events and reminders about resources to help members run their businesses. Members who have already provided The Chamber with their cell phone number were added to both distribution lists. Those who haven’t provided us with their cell number but wish to receive text alerts can do the following: 1. Text ADVOCACY to “69302”. 2. Text CHAMBER217 to “70000”. The Chamber hopes members will embrace these new communication methods, and, as a result stay better informed about ways we can help businesses be successful.
