MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

It is great to be here! I know it’s been said many times by people in all kinds of situations. In this case these words do not do justice for how I feel. When I say, “It is great to be here”, I am not only talking about my new position as your President & CEO of The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. I also mean it’s great to be in Springfield working with the business community. It’s great to be in a community with all my family who all grew up here and left, only to realize how Springfield and Sangamon County are the perfect place to work and raise a family. The process I have gone through to arrive here to serve you involved many stops along

the way. I grew up in Divernon, spent three years in the Army, and attended college at Eastern Illinois University, where I started my first restaurant in Charleston. I worked for small and large restaurant operations with a short stop in retail. The final restaurant stop in my career was truly life changing. Owning and operating Charlie Parker’s and the experiences I had there led me to the best two opportunities of my professional life. Without the recognition I received from Charlie Parker’s, I would not have become a State Representative. The experience and contacts I made while serving in the General Assembly were impactful in my being selected for this current position. I am ready to work every day to help you succeed in your business. There are approximately 1300 members of The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. These businesses cover the entire range of sizes and types of operations. I might not understand your entire operation. However, I do understand the challenges all businesses face, especially as we work our way out of this worldwide pandemic. I look forward to working with you to ensure your success.
I believe the future for businesses in Springfield is great. Yes, we have challenges but the potential here is unlimited. Being the seat of state government provides us some unique opportunities of which I intend to take full advantage. Our medical district is second to none in my opinion and its growth with the relocation of the 3rd Street railway will be transformational for the city of Springfield. I am excited to work with the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance as they attract new businesses to our community. I am optimistic that downtown Springfield will continue to evolve into a tourist, housing and retail center that will be the envy of other communities of our size. It’s time we all get to work and fulfill the potential we have in Springfield and Sangamon County. I hope you all have a great Holiday Season and that you all agree with me that “It’s Great to be Here”.

ANNUAL GALA SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 4 VOLUNTEERS, OTHERS TO BE RECOGNIZED The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will host its Annual Gala, presented by PNC Bank, on Friday, March 4 at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center. This prestigious dinner provides an opportunity to gather with top business and community leaders throughout Sangamon County. This year, Chamber leaders will reflect on the business community’s response to the pandemic and its role in assisting members through this unprecedented crisis. Volunteer leaders, Leadership Springfield graduates from both the Class of 2020 and 2021 will be recognized, as well as recipients of the 2020 and 2021 Small Business Awards.
The evening will begin with cocktails starting at 6:00 pm, dinner at 7:00 pm, and the program at 7:45 pm, followed by a networking reception. Testament – Your life is a testament to what you have created and contributed to this world. Estate planning is often considered an end-of-life process that communicates last wishes, but it also represents your life experiences. In many ways, estate planning is the process that tells your life story. Treasure – Your life story is a treasure to your beneficiaries as well as what you have created. What are you protecting? Many of us believe that we do NOT have enough treasure that is worth protecting. If you have a home or a bank account, you have treasure. If you have loved ones, you have treasure. Now is the time to take stock of your life and determine what is important. Trust – A trust allows you to protect assets and avoid probate at your passing. A trust design process will allow time to discuss future decisions for your care and assets that may need to be made today. Those decisions are put in writing; things like who benefits from your estate, what measures do you want to be taken at the end of life, and who can make decisions for you when you are no longer able? Your powers-of-attorney and trustees are often the same person(s) that will benefit from your estate, like your adult children. But there are times when those outside the family may be in a better position to help you. Much of your peace of mind comes from answering this question honestly. There is no rule; it is a matter of whom do you trust. Timely – Creating a trust is a great way to protect your assets, but they are time-sensitive. A trust is a legal document that allows you to put assets aside for safe keeping. A revocable trust allows you to protect assets from probate, but an irrevocable trust allows you to protect assets from long term care expenses. However, there is a time element related to protecting assets from long term care. Take Care of Your Investment – If you already have a trust in place, it may be time to review your assets. Estate planning laws can change; it is good to review your trust and be confident everything is in place. It is beneficial to review your trust annually for changes within your family, health, or finances.
