Chris Hembrough President and CEO Nearly seven and a half years ago I stepped into my role with The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce with a deep passion for our community, for business, and for the people who make Springfield and Sangamon County a great place to live, work, and raise a family. As I wrap up my time with The Chamber, I walk away with the same passion for our community, but an even deeper appreciation for people, for the many relationships I have had the privilege of enjoying along the way. On many occasions I have said, “almost anything of great value that happens in our lives, whether personal or professional, happens through relationships.” I am more convinced of this now than any other time in my life. Life and business are all about relationships. I will forever be grateful for the

I have witnessed firsthand what I have always known to be true. Great businesses and great organizations don’t emerge by accident. Yes, they emerge and grow because they deliver great products and services, but I would contend it is about much more than the products and services, it is about people. Great businesses and great organizations don’t see people as another cog in the wheel or a commodity to be used to achieve their goals, instead, they know how to treat people, they truly value people and relationships. In my role with The Chamber, I have been afforded the unique opportunity to interact with literally hundreds of people from nearly every kind of business and organization that exists, as well as with many local, state, and federal officials. The one common denominator of those who have great respect and are known as true contributors and leaders is they value people; they treat people the right way. As I look across the landscape of our membership and community, I see so many I have had the opportunity to get to know, who have graciously given me their time,

invited me in, and reminded me of what matters most. Thank you for the lessons learned and the wisdom and insights you have passed along over the years. Last, I want to thank each Chamber member, our Board of Directors, our many volunteers, and of course, our staff. It has been my privilege to work alongside each of you. To each member, you can be certain the Chamber staff will always give you and your organization their very best. The staff is as talented a team of professionals as I have ever been around, and I have no doubt they will continue to fulfill our core functions – advocacy, delivering business resources and support, providing leadership and professional development, and offering numerous opportunities for visibility and strategic connections – each day with excellence. As always, we are grateful for our partnership and the privilege to serve you. Thank you for your continued investment in membership, the work of The Chamber, and the community at-large. Chase and The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will present the 2021 Economic Outlook Breakfast on Tuesday, October 26 at Lincoln Land Community College. James Glassman, Managing Director & Head Economist of Commercial Banking for Chase, will discuss national economic data and trends and their potential impact at the local level.

BACK TO BUSINESS (B2B) GRANT PROGRAM CHAMBER SERVED AS COMMUNITY NAVIGATOR

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) served as a “Community Navigator”, providing program information, updates, and one-on-one technical assistance to many Springfield and Sangamon County businesses applying for the B2B Grant over the last two months. The application opened on August 18 and recently closed, having received over 50,000 applications from Illinois businesses. The B2B Grant program, for businesses and not-for-profit organizations impacted by COVID-19, was funded with $250 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and administered through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The grant program prioritized businesses and organizations that did

LEADERSHIP SPRINGFIELD CLASS UNDERWAY NOW IN ITS 36TH YEAR

Leadership Springfield, a program of The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, recently began its 36th annual class. Leadership Springfield exists to assist with the development of current and future leaders for area businesses, organizations, and the community at-large. Over 14 weeks this fall, participants will learn about various personality types, leadership choices, styles and roles, time management, and team building. They will also enhance their leadership capabilities by learning from some of our community’s top leaders and developing a deeper awareness of our community in the areas of Healthcare; Education; Local & State Government; Tourism; Emergency Management & Homeland Security; and Technology. Outside of regular program sessions, participants are challenged to exercise creativity and problem-solving skills by working as teams on projects for the benefit of area not-for-profit organizations. Leadership Springfield may be more relevant today than any other time in the program’s history. When you consider our everchanging culture, ongoing technological advances, and the need for leaders to guide organizations while connecting the right people to the right priorities – great leadership is essential. We need leaders who, for decades to come, will understand how to bring people together to solve problems and not just talk about them. And, maybe most of all, we need leaders who want to and will do the right thing, even in the face of opposition.

BRIANNA YOST HIRED AS NEW ADMIN ASSISTANT

Brianna Yost was hired earlier this month as The Chamber’s new Administrative Assistant. She will work in areas of the organization such as social media, communications, events, and support for the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Yost graduated in May of 2020 from the University of Illinois Springfield, where she earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Management, with a Minor in Marketing. She worked for Country Financial for a year before joining The Chamber. Brianna’s hobbies include hiking, cooking Asian cuisine, learning about different cultures, and attending local events. Brianna and her fiancé, Jake, are planning to wed next year.
