HONORING SMALL BUSINESSES
nominees and major sponsors attending in person, and all others joining us virtually. The event, presented by Hickory Point Bank for the 19th consecutive year, will recognize 28 nominees. Of those, four outstanding community entrepreneurs and leaders will receive the following awards: Chris Hembrough President and CEO Small businesses, however you define them, play a vital role in our local economy. Over 90 percent of all businesses in the US have 25 employees or less. Eighty percent of our local Chamber members have 25 employees or less. Small businesses continue to be incubators for entrepreneurship, innovation, and employment growth. Small businesses are at the heart of our economy, which is why The Chamber will host the 35th Annual Small Business Awards event on October 21st, recognizing the contributions of our small businesses to our community and local economy. However, due to continuing concerns related to COVID-19, coupled with the fact that the health of our members, employees, and the community at-large are our top priority, we will deliver the Small Business Awards event in a hybrid format with
Not-for-Profit Business Director of the Year - recognizes an executive of a not-for-profit organization who has demonstrated the innovative use of organizational skills and management expertise to create or expand the organization’s service to the needs of the community. New & Emerging Business Owner of the Year - recognizes a business owner whose company has been in business for a minimum of one (1) year but less than four (4) years and has demonstrated outstanding performance through innovation, growth, staying power and contributions to the community. Small Business Owner of the Year recognizes a business owner whose company has been in business for a minimum of four (4) years and has demonstrated a significant level of success and contributions to the community.
Lifetime Award Business Owner of the Year - recognizes a business owner whose for-profit company has been in business in Sangamon County for a minimum of 25 years and who has made significant contributions to commerce and the community. Congratulations to this year’s Small Business Awards nominees. The Chamber honors all small businesses who work tirelessly to make Springfield and Sangamon County a better place to live, work, and raise families. Small businesses are critical to our economy and the heart and soul of our community. They bring character, local flavor, personal service and they create jobs. LEADERSHIP SPRINGFIELD IN ITS 35TH YEAR
Leadership Springfield, a program of The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, recently began its 35th annual class. Leadership Springfield exists to assist with the development of current and future leaders for area businesses, organizations, and the community at-large. It is our goal to strengthen our community one leader at a time. Upon completion of the program, participants will be recognized and honored during our Annual Gala in 2021.
The Leadership Springfield class hears from Greg Matthews, Vice President, EOM North America and IT Solutions at Levi, Ray & Shoup, Inc. during the Technology & Innovation program.
Over 14 weeks this fall, participants will learn about different personality types, leadership styles and roles, leadership choices, strategic planning and team building. They will also enhance their leadership capabilities by learning from some our community’s best leaders and developing a deeper awareness of our community in the areas of Tourism; Health Care; Education; State Government; Emergency Management and Homeland Security; Local Government, and Technology and Innovation.

Outside of regular program sessions, participants will also be challenged to exercise creativity and problem-solving skills by working as teams on projects for the benefit of area not-forprofit organizations.

CYBERSECURITY IN THE REMOTE WORK ERA One of the biggest adjustments companies have had to manage in the COVID-19 era is the shift to a remote workforce. Unfortunately, this rise in the number of remote workers is creating more opportunities for cybercriminals. Cybercriminals are taking advantage, using social engineering, sending spoof emails, either purporting to come from internal stakeholders with information about workplace changes or coronavirus response efforts, or external organizations like the World Health Organization, with news or information about COVID-19. Good cyber hygiene habits can prevent an attack, even with an elevated threat level. Here are some strategies to help you stay secure:
EDUCATE YOUR TEAM Cybersecurity training is most effective as an ongoing effort, ideally combining in-person sessions (when possible), online courses, and awareness campaigns with email reminders. Topics should include: • Identifying and avoiding suspicious emails. This will help users avoid phishing attempts with URLs or attachments programmed to download malware into your network. • Enforcing strong password policies. Teach users to develop strong passwords, enforce policies to change passwords frequently and prohibit password sharing. • Setting browsers to warn users when visiting sites that may contain malware. • Blocking downloads from suspicious sources. • Prohibiting users from sharing company laptops and mobile devices. ENACT COMMON SENSE POLICIES Technology alone cannot guarantee data security. It also takes user education and common-sense policies. Security policies are multidimensional. Password policies are a good starting point, but businesses also need to address system access and grant employees permission only to systems they need. Businesses also need rules on the use of personal mobile devices for work. If so, those devices must be monitored, secured with endpoint protection, encryption, and wipe capability.
SET A STRATEGY Understanding cybercriminals’ threats is essential to building strong cybersecurity defenses. Here are the components of a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy that will grow with you: • Implement advanced tools: Businesses need multilayered approaches to cybersecurity and should consider a combination of tools, including antivirus programs and firewall and network security solutions to protect devices connected to your network. • Invest in expertise: It’s hard to grasp cybersecurity without expert help. For smaller companies, working with managed security services providers (MSSP) is best practice, though some businesses with in-house experts can benefit from tapping an MSSP. • Secure mobile devices: As computing becomes increasingly mobile and cloud-based, companies should include mobile devices in their security strategies or risk leaving an open door to cyber attackers.
