MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
VITAL TO OUR LOCAL ECONOMY
Now more than ever it is time to recognize the ongoing contributions of our small businesses to our community and economy. During our Small Business Awards luncheon, presented by Hickory Point Bank for the 20th consecutive year, we will recognize 45 nominees representing 32 organizations. Of those, four outstanding community entrepreneurs and leaders will receive the following awards: Chris Hembrough President and CEO Small businesses play a vital role in our local economy. Over 90 percent of all businesses in the US have less than 20 employees. Eighty percent of our local Chamber members have less than 20 employees. They are at the heart of our economy, which is why The Chamber will host the 36th Annual Small Business Awards event on August 24th. Springfield and Sangamon County businesses and organizations have demonstrated amazing creativity and resilience over the last 18 months. Many have exhibited an incredible amount of flexibility and a willingness to change their operations at a moment’s notice, all the while wondering if their business or organization would even survive. Yet, as we continue to emerge from the pandemic, small businesses continue to be incubators for entrepreneurship, innovation, and employment growth.
New & Emerging Business Owner of the Year - recognizes the achievements of the owner of a business that has been established for more than one (1) year but less than four (4) years, who has demonstrated outstanding performance through their leadership, innovation, growth, and contributions to the community. Small Business Owner of the Year - recognizes an owner of a business established for four or more years with less than 100 employees who has demonstrated a significant level of success through their creativity, leadership, staying power, and ongoing contributions to the community. Not-for-Profit Director of the Year recognizes an executive of a not-for-profit organization who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, organizational skills, and the management expertise to create and or expand their organization’s results to the community and those they serve.
Lifetime Award Business Owner of the Year - recognizes a business owner whose for-profit company has been in business in Sangamon County for a minimum of 25 years and who has made significant contributions to commerce and the community. The Chamber honors all small businesses who work tirelessly to make Springfield and Sangamon County a better place to live, work, and raise families. Small businesses are critical to our economy and the heart and soul of our community. They bring character, local flavor, personal service - and they create jobs. Congratulations to this year’s Small Business Awards nominees. The full list of our 2021 nominees can be found on pages 6 - 9. ADVOCACY UPDATES AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON CHAMBER WEBSITE The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is a significant voice of and for business in Springfield and Sangamon County and has an obligation to represent the interests of its members. The Chamber supports public policy that encourages entrepreneurship, development, investment, and job creation. We oppose public policy that creates unnecessary regulation that will negatively impact the business climate and the creation of jobs.
You will also find a link to contact information for each of our local, state, and federal elected officials under the Advocacy menu on the website. The Chamber encourages all members to contact our elected officials with your questions, concerns, and policy insights related to the business climate.
At the end of each year, The Chamber Board of Directors adopts an annual policy agenda which guides The Chamber’s advocacy efforts in the coming year. The policy agenda, which includes positions on local, state, and federal policy, is available to review under the Advocacy menu of The Chamber’s website, www.gscc.org. ANNUAL GALA SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 25 VOLUNTEERS, OTHERS TO BE RECOGNIZED The 2021 Annual Gala, postponed earlier this year due to the pandemic, will be held on Saturday, September 25. Held at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center, the evening begins with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m. A networking reception will close out the evening (as allowed under Restore Illinois guidelines, if applicable).
Leadership Springfield Class of 2020 graduates and the 2020 Small Business Award recipients will also be recognized.
Every year, this prestigious dinner provides an opportunity to gather with top business and community leaders throughout Sangamon County. Chamber accomplishments are celebrated and exceptional volunteer leaders who contributed to The Chamber’s mission are honored. In addition, this year Chamber leaders will reflect on the business community’s response to the pandemic and its role in assisting members through this unprecedented crisis.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK BREAKFAST GLASSMAN RETURNING AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER The Chamber and Presenting Sponsor Chase Bank will hold the 2021 Economic Outlook Breakfast on Tuesday, October 26 at Lincoln Land Community College. Doors open and buffet begins at 7:15 a.m. with the program from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. James Glassman, Managing Director & Head Economist, Commercial Banking from JPMorgan Chase Bank will join us again this year to discuss national economic data and trends and their potential impact at the local level. In his role at Chase, Glassman provides market insights to help clients better understand the changing economy and its impact on their business. He also works closely with the firm’s Corporate Sector, including the Chief Investment Office and Investor Relations, as well as the Investment Bank and Government Relations groups, providing financial analysis and research.
Bank of Philadelphia Survey of Professional Forecasters and the National Association of Business Economists’ panel of macroeconomic forecasters. Mr. Glassman earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and a master’s degree in Economics from the University of Illinois, Chicago. ENERGY CO-OP SAVES ON UTILITY COSTS FALL CAMPAIGN SIGN UP STARTS IN SEPTEMBER
The Chamber continues to partner with Nationally Recognized Energy Management experts, CQI Associates, to administer and manage the Chamber’s Energy Purchasing Cooperative. Competitive rates are obtained by leveraging aggregated usage from members of 23 Chambers of Commerce. The increased purchasing power allows members to receive lower rates than they could typically attain on their own. Since 2004, the Cooperative Electricity and Natural Gas rates have been lower than both market rates and the weighted annual utility standard offer service rates. This benefit is only available to Chamber members who receive their electric and/or natural gas services through Ameren. If your business or organization is a substantial user of natural gas and/or electricity, significant savings can be realized on its annual utility costs. In addition to receiving competitive rates, additional co-op benefits include having an organization working for you that monitors energy market changes and negotiates on your behalf. The co-op offers options
to obtain up to 100% clean, renewable, wind-powered electricity, and signing up for the service is easy and free to members.
