MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
FROM HOPE TO REALITY
One of the Chamber’s four core functions is to provide members with opportunities for “visibility and making connections that matter” - opportunities to gather and celebrate accomplishments and those who serve our community so well, and opportunities to network and build strategic relationships by putting the right people, in the right room, at the right time. Chris Hembrough President and CEO Fifteen days (to flatten the curve) turned into 15 months. Fifteen months later our hope of returning to something similar to what life was like prior to the pandemic is becoming a reality. On May 14, the longawaited Bridge Phase began, and the CDC issued new guidance stating fully vaccinated individuals were no longer required to wear masks. On June 11, we moved to the fifth and final phase of the State’s reopening plan “in which all sectors will reopen with businesses and recreation resuming normal operations and where conventions, festivals, and large events can take place again.” I suspect this summer will be quite the celebration for many given the return to “normal” and the return of various activities, events, and festivals, including the Illinois State Fair. As many look forward to reconnecting with colleagues, friends, and even family members, we too look forward to celebrating and reconnecting with many we have not seen in well over a year.
So, as we turn the page from a challenging and difficult 15 months, I hope you will join us for two of our signature events. Both were postponed with the hope we would be able to come together and celebrate later in the year. All indications are we will be able to do so. Small Business Awards Luncheon - Tuesday, August 24 The event, presented by Hickory Point Bank for the 20th consecutive year, will recognize many nominees and four of these outstanding leaders will be the recipients of the following awards:

New & Emerging Business Owner of the Year - a business leader whose company has been in business at least one (1) year but less than four (4) years and is demonstrating significant success.
•
Small Business Owner of the Year - a business leader whose company has been in business for a minimum of four (4) years and has demonstrated a track record of significant accomplishment.
•
Not-for-Profit Director of the Year - an executive of a not-for-profit organization who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, management, and organizational expertise.
•
Lifetime Business Owner of the Year - a business leader whose company has been in business for at least 25 years and made significant contributions to commerce and the community.
Annual Gala - Saturday, September 25 This prestigious event, presented by PNC Bank, provides an opportunity to gather with top business and community leaders. During the event we will reflect on the business community’s response to the pandemic, while also recognizing key volunteer leaders, the Leadership Springfield Class of 2020, and the 2020 Small Business Award recipients. As always, we are grateful for our partnership and the privilege to serve you. Thank you for your investment in membership, the work of The Chamber, and the community at-large.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS TO RESUME IN JUNE GOOD MORNING SPRINGFIELD IN JULY Due to the State of Illinois moving into Phase 5 under the Restore Illinois plan, The Chamber will resume holding our Good Morning Springfield and Business After Hours events. Business After Hours (BAH) and Good Morning Springfield (GMS) events both provide a casual atmosphere at a member host business favorable for making connections that matter. For the host, the events provide an excellent opportunity to showcase their business and network with fellow Chamber members. These relationship building events were canceled in mid-March last year due to the stay-at-home order enacted because of COVID-19. Mitigations prevented The Chamber from offering them throughout the remainder of 2020 and in the first part of 2021. Hosts that were scheduled to hold events in 2020 are being contacted to determine if they’re still interested in hosting.

LEADERSHIP SPRINGFIELD APPLICATIONS DUE JUNE 30
The application for the Leadership Springfield Class of 2021 (beginning in September) is due June 30 and is available on The Chamber’s website in the Leadership Springfield area under the Member Services menu. Leadership Springfield (LS) is a 14 week series of half day programs in which participants gain leadership skills and in-depth exposure to critical issues affecting the Springfield area. Participants interact with community leaders and decision makers who share diverse perspectives on significant accomplishments and opportunities within the Springfield community. The program aims to develop, strengthen, and equip local professionals to benefit the Springfield area. Interactive professional development is a cornerstone of the program. Curriculum topics for the program typically include Leadership Development, Education, Healthcare, Public Safety, Government, Strategic Planning, Team Building, Technology & Innovation, and Tourism.

HELP US CELEBRATE LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS The Chamber believes supporting the work of small business owners helps our local economy and community. Over 80% of our Chamber membership consists of small businesses with less than 25 FTE employees. That’s one of many reasons The Chamber holds its annual Small Business Awards Luncheon. It’s an opportunity to honor the most outstanding entrepreneurs whose ingenuity, hard work and innovation have created and promoted a successful and growing business in the Springfield area. The Luncheon also provides a great opportunity to network with your clients and friends.
Over 250 small business owners have been recognized at this event over the past 35 years. Nominees will be recognized for their accomplishments and successes and recipients will be announced at the Luncheon on Tuesday, August 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center. Members can register to attend at www.gscc.org. Cost to attend is $35 per person through August 6 and increases to $45 after that date. Table sponsorships that include 10 seats and additional visibility are $375.
This year will mark the 36th year that the Luncheon has been held. The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce along with Title Sponsor Express Employment Professionals is offering employers an opportunity to seek out quality candidates for openings in their businesses or organizations at The Chamber Job Fair. The event will be held Tuesday, August 3 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Springfield Convention Center.
A Certificate of Origin is an international grade document attesting that goods in an export shipment are wholly obtained, produced, manufactured, or processed in a particular country. What does our electronic certificate of origin provide to you?
The Chamber is partnering with the Land of Lincoln Workforce Alliance at Illinois workNet Center and other workforce partners to promote the event to job seekers. The Job Fair will also be promoted via print, radio and social media extensively to bring quality candidates in front of employers. Companies frequently report high satisfaction with their results from Chamber job fair events, including strengthening their talent pool and/or hiring new employees.
