Legends of Prep XII Ned Coughlin, S.J. “Inspired by his own experience of Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius, and guided by an outstanding insight for the way students interacted with each other and with their world, Ned established the Emmaus program that continues nearly 300 retreats later.”

Around Prep, “Emmaus” is a word with only two syllables – a local pronunciation seldom heard elsewhere. But also around Prep, it is a word imbued with deeper meaning than it carries elsewhere. For both of these phenomena, credit is due to Ned Coughlin, S.J. In his 52-year ministry as a Jesuit, Ned’s road passed through Grand & Warren on three occasions: he taught Latin as a Jesuit scholastic from 1969-71, served as chaplain while also teaching theology, history, and Greek from 1975-81, and after a yearlong sabbatical returned once more from 1982-84 as assistant principal for faculty and curriculum development. He came to be known as a man for all seasons: Petrean moderator; organizer of school Masses and school dances; leader of an annual upperclassman expedition to cut down a Christmas tree for Prep’s campus – these were just a few of the hats he wore with aplomb.

Among his many contributions in his time, though, none has proven so enduring as his work in developing a new retreat program for upperclassmen during the 1977-78 school year. Inspired by his own experience of Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius, and guided by an outstanding insight for the way students interacted with each other and with their world, Ned established the Emmaus program that continues, nearly 300 retreats later. As one nominator noted, Emmaus “builds on the themes of the Exercises to allow students to grow in understanding of themselves, their relationship with God, and their sense of community.” The success of Emmaus made it a model for programs in Jesuit high schools nationwide; it is no exaggeration to trace the prominence of student retreats in Jesuit secondary education today to the work of Ned Coughlin and his collaborators – including Fr. Tony Azzarto, S.J., Fr. John Mullin, S.J., and Br. Tom Garvey, S.J. – 40 years ago. After Prep, Fr. Coughlin continued to serve as a leader in education as well as spiritual direction, whether as principal at his alma mater Xavier, in campus ministry at Le Moyne College, as pastor of Saint Francis Xavier parish in Manhattan or, most recently, as superior at the Jogues Retreat Center in Cornwall, New York. He died in June 2014. In dedicating their yearbook to him, the 1978 Petrean staff noted, “[W]hether in his office, in class, down the shore, at a gym meet, or a Petrean meeting, he never loses sight of his individuality. Through it all, Ned is Ned.”

That singular presence lives on, as one Emmaus I participant recalls, through the unusual pronunciation of the name Emmaus: “[T]hat was how Ned, S.J., said it,” the alumnus explained. “Why Ned, so fluent and literate in all things biblical, told us that, I have no idea. But none of us would argue with him on this sort of thing.”

Although not formally enshrined in any policy manual, “Check with Jim Ryan” has been part of standard operating procedure at Grand & Warren for decades, particularly when it comes to matters of real estate or local government relations. His thoroughness, honesty, and insight have made him a trusted and valuable advisor to the institution, and an integral part of its continued growth. Jim began devoting his spare time to Prep in the early 1980s, soliciting Annual Fund donations during the Phonathon – which he continues to do more than 30 years later. As a class chair since 2005, he serves as a model for peer-to-peer outreach among alumni: always taking the time to follow up with his classmates, always willing to take work home from the Phonathon to catch up with any stragglers. As a member of the Alumni Board, he has helped to guide Prep’s broader alumni relations program, beyond the Class of ’66. It speaks to Jim’s character that he has maintained his dedication to those personal connections on Prep’s behalf, even has he has taken on greater and greater responsibilities to support the school’s mission. He served two terms on Prep’s Board of Trustees from 2005-2011, and led the Board’s Master Planning Committee as the transformation of Prep’s campus through the Imagine Campaign began to take shape. In short, his leadership and legal expertise have been essential to the modernization of Prep’s physical plant during the 21st century.

Tonight, as we honor Jim for his many contributions behind the scenes, we also bring him a rare, but well-deserved, moment in the spotlight. A veritable “Who’s Who” of key advisers to Prep’s master planning efforts who have already been honored as Legends – Jack Caulfield, ’71, Joe Cooney, ’45, Tom Leane, ’65, Tom McGinty, ’71, and Paul Schaetzle, ’71 – have each sung Jim’s praises as an invaluable team player. Another Legend with some master planning experience agreed: “Given his quiet manner, Jim’s impact sometimes flies under the radar,” remarked Jim Horan, ’70, Prep’s VP for planning & principal giving, “which is a shame, given the incredible degree to which it is valued and relied upon. Put simply, it has been absolutely indispensible for decades.” Through his good counsel – shared pro bono, as always – and his enthusiasm for his alma mater, Jim has been vital in Prep’s continued growth, helping to ensure that the school community he holds so dear can continue to serve young men for generations to come. A Jersey City native, and a proud graduate of Holy Cross, Jim is a Partner at Bogart Keane Ryan, LLC, and lives in Essex Fells with his wife Dene. They are the parents of Amanda and Ed, ’04, and the grandparents of Joseph, Riley, and Matthew.

Is it ironic that a sister can exemplify the celebrated Prep brotherhood? Or that a member of a Franciscan order can embody the best of a Jesuit school? Or that by raising her voice – in song, in support of Prep’s athletic teams, and in compassion for people in need – one teacher can quietly show a generation of students how to live as a Man (or Woman) for Others? So be it, because all of these ironies have made life at Grand & Warren that much richer, through the many contributions of Sister Frances Marie Duncan, O.S.F. Even with extensive teaching experience already in hand, it took no time for Prep to make an impression on Sr. Frances when she first arrived in 1990. She was “told by a freshman... that every sister that ever taught him either died or left the convent - that was a warning!” Fortunately, she was undeterred and has spent 21 years making an impression of her own.

Although the legacy Sr. Frances has built extends far beyond the classroom, it begins with her excellence as a science educator for her students, and a mentor for her collagues. One nomination from a colleague noted, “She will go the distance to ensure that a student understands the material, that a colleague who needs guidance is helped, and that a fellow Prep employee or parent is supported.” A fellow science teacher recalled, “She embodied for us what it was to be an Ignatian educator. The way she helped us think about why we teach and how we are teaching fostered within us a desire to be better.” Her mastery of chemistry and the teacher’s craft is underscored by numerous awards, accolades, and fellowships. And despite her master’s degree from Lehigh in educational technology, it has not been lost on her that such accomplishments have not always been expected of a woman, particularly in religious life. She recalls “startling Prep alumni in my early years when they found out I taught chemistry rather than religion or English.”

But chemistry was just the beginning. “Her ministry of presence and accompaniment to those she encounters is heroic,” a colleague wrote. She has indeed been ubiquitous. You might find her leading the choir (in the pre-Vox days) at Mass, filming football games from the roof of a van, organizing student-run Christmas and Easter experiences for underprivileged kids, or even rescuing a student from a tailoring emergency at the prom with her handy sewing kit. Her avid fandom of Prep athletics has inspired Coach Rich Hansen to present her with gifts following the 1994, 2005, and 2014 state football championships, and even landed her on the Jersey Journal’s front page in 1999, as she called a local politican to task for leading opposing fans in taunting Prep players.

One particularly proud memory – and one that reflects her lasting impact – is convincing then-principal Jack Raslowsky, ’79 that her vision of a mother-son dance would be viable at Prep. Today, the “Mom Prom” remains one of the most popular events on the Prep calendar. Sr. Frances currently serves as Provincial Minister for the U.S. Province of the School Sisters of St. Francis, and while her daily presence on campus is dearly missed, she remains connected as a trustee, and by her continued attendance at numerous Prep events.

Prep’s Higher Achievement Program (HAP) is a formative opportunity for young men, and for many a harbinger of the even more impactful experiences they will encounter at Grand & Warren when they are a bit older. Generally, that refers to the students, of course. But in the summer of 1987, a Jesuit novice from Buffalo made his first brief appearance in Jersey City as a HAP teacher, prefiguring greater things to come. Nearly 20 years later (and after a three-year stint teaching math in the early ’90s) Fr. Bob Reiser, S.J., would prove transformative for life at Grand & Warren. Assuming the presidency of a school already in an unprecedented position of strength, he was not content to rest on past successes. Instead, his leadership would come to embody the openness to growth Jesuit schools seek to foster in their students: embracing the humility to see what was and what could be, and the vision and courage to pursue the opportunity.

Under his stewardship, those opportunities proved numerous, and Prep pursued them vigorously. Offerings in academics, athletics, and the arts multiplied. The new Imagine Fund (which completed its second and final phase this year) raised nearly $20 million in support of campus improvements and scholarships. The decomissioned Saint Peter’s Church and the outmoded Burke Hall gave way to the vibrant O’Keefe Commons and the technologically advanced Moriarty Science Center. The student body grew both in number and in geographic reach, even in the midst of a challenging economy. Faculty and staff retention improved and “hiring for mission” became the norm, assuring Prep of the talent needed in order to live its mission fully. With fewer Jesuits available to define Prep’s identity, the school endeavored to form its lay faculty and administrators in the Ignatian tradition. Meanwhile, the Sheehan Scholarship Program and the Grand Gala – two initiatives Bob spearheaded personally – helped to ensure Prep could welcome the best and brightest students of all backgrounds. Even as his visionary leadership steered Prep to ever greater heights, though, it was perhaps his personal investment in the day-to-day operation of the school that stood out most. He could plausibly be found meeting with a million-dollar donor in the morning, sharing lunch with the student council at midday, and watering the gardens along Warren Street in the afternoon. “Bob’s vision included every facet of Prep life, from the micro to the macro,” one colleague wrote. Thanks, perhaps, to his own version of the “aggressive friendliness” he valued in Prep students, Prep continues to benefit from the relationships he cultivated with alumni and parents, and from the forward-thinking culture he encouraged. Another colleague recalls, “His constant question, ‘Does this serve the mission?’ is something I think about every day. I began to think of what could be possible...I was encouraged to try new things, and assured that if they didn’t work, that was simply an opportunity for growth.” Fr. Reiser is now the president of McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, New York, and maintains one more personal connection to Prep: his nephew, Russell Fiorella, is currently a member of our religion department.

As the managing partner of the major New Jersey law firm Connell Foley, Phil McGovern is, unsurprisingly, a busy man. But no matter what other professional or personal commitments he’s balancing, he always makes time for Saint Peter’s Prep.

After joining Prep’s Alumni Board in the early 1990s, he gladly gave of his time and expertise, working with Prep administrators in strategy sessions on such topics as major gift fundraising and encouraging alumni to include Prep in their estate plans.

Over the decades, Prep’s strategic vision has expanded, and so has Phil’s role. As a trustee from 2004-10, he served on the Ignatian Identity Committee and the Development (now Advancement) Committee, helping to shape both the content of Prep’s mission and the means to pursue it. As Prep’s primary legal counsel, he has advised Saint Peter’s on school policies, construction contracts, property acquisitions and sales, and the school’s interactions with Jersey City officials.

Phil was invited to rejoin the Board of Trustees as chair in the fall of 2012, following the sudden passing of his predecessor and fellow Legend, Bill Ahearn, ’75, P’01. Given the challenging circumstances, and the high bar that had already been set, he might have been content – and Prep would have done quite well – if he had simply stayed the course. But that simply would not have been Phil’s style. Instead, he has enthusiastically promoted ever greater institutional growth, working with two Prep presidents (fellow inductee Fr. Bob Reiser, S.J., until 2014, and Fr. Ken Boller, S.J., through the present day) to bring the Imagine Fund to a successful conclusion – including the creation of the Perkins Athletic Center, the renovation of Hogan and Mulry halls, the expansion of the Sheehan Scholars Program, and the growth of Prep’s endowment – while championing the continued development of the school’s curriculum and Ignatian identity. As not only a proud alumnus, but also the son (the late Philip, Sr., ’43), brother (the late John, ’80), and dad (Philip, ’11) of Prep alumni, his connection to the Jesuit values that define life at Grand & Warren is both deep and personal, guiding his every decision – and, in turn, guiding the school to live those values to the fullest.

A fellow Legend remarked, “At his core, Phil is driven to keep the spirit of Prep alive and vital for current Prep students as well as those future students that will be following long after his term as chair ends,” continuing, “Phil epitomizes all that Jesuit education is about - integrity, selfless service, care for others, and sharing of his talents and treasure.” A graduate of Saint Michael’s College (VT) and Seton Hall Law, Phil and wife Diana live in Nutley and are the parents of Philip and Maddie. And while an outstanding legal career has brought Phil numerous accolades already – listings among the Best Lawyers in America, New Jersey Super Lawyers, New York Magazine Top Rated Lawyers, and Irish Legal 100, just to name a few – his passion for all things Prep means this latest addition will hold a place of honor.
