President’s Welcome

To follow

Chair’s Welcome

To follow It is my pleasure to welcome you once again to the fabulous Majestic Theatre for our 2024 production of The Wizard of Oz. This is the 3rd time in their 30 years that The MOB have performed this classic musical and I promise you that you will be delighted by this production, which is packed full of special effects, colourful costumes and of course our amazing young actors who have really excelled themselves this year. Such is the talent in The MOB that we have two full casts of principals, so do think about coming back for a second sitting to see both teams.

Last year we celebrated 30 years of The MOB and as well as our Town Hall party and the brilliant production of The School of Rock, we had the most amazing concert in November featuring past and present members and attended by our founder MOB member and Patron Mark Hedges, who is now a hugely successful director. We also won the NODA award for best youth production for The Little Mermaid in 2022 and a lockdown hero award for pushing through with our production of Shrek in 2021 following the pandemic. Quite a year! Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate with us during 2023, we can’t wait to see what the next thirty years brings.

As always, I am hugely grateful to our fabulous production team, committee members, volunteers and directors for all their efforts throughout the year. Our creative crew this year have included Keri

Duffy as Director and Sarah Mitchell as Assistant Director, who have joined the team for this production, Pete Lack our resident MD and vocal coach and Becca White our resident choreographer and dance teacher. No vote of thanks is complete, without thanking the amazing volunteers at The Majestic Theatre. Costs for everyone have escalated in the last few years and this is no less true for amateur theatre and so we are hugely grateful to our sponsors and advertisers for their generous donations, please check them out in our programme and support their businesses where you can.

Every year we say a sad farewell to some of members as they go off to pastures new. We are especially proud this year that all three of our leavers are hoping to pursue careers in the performing arts. We look forward to seeing Louisa Merrion, Oscar Pinkerton and Jasper Whitworth on a professional stage in the not too distant future and wish them all the best. People ask me why I am still involved in The MOB long after my children have graduated and the honest answer is I love it. It is such a privilege to help young people to develop their skills and confidence and achieve their dreams. Finally, my thanks to you, our audience. Without you we wouldn’t be able to perform in this fantastic theatre. Thank you for your encouragement, enthusiasm and continued support. Enjoy your trip down the ‘yellow brick road’ with us, it’s going to be quite a ride!

CREATIVE TEAM

KERRY DUFFY director

There’s no place like home and for Keri, Kansas was home for 9 months as a toddler. Moving back to Edinburgh, she started dancing at age three. At twelve, she landed her first major role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz in Cyprus. Other productions followed: Shakespeare, pantomimes, plays, then at seventeen, whilst in Germany, she began writing and directing. Keri started dance teacher training at Northern Ballet School but, after an injury, changed to a degree in Community and

Youth Studies, discovered community theatre, and gained a Directors’ qualification through Salford Arts.

Moving to Retford 15 years ago and having met Sarah Mitchell through Staples Dance Academy, Keri joined RMTC for The Sound of Music and has performed ever since, with her favourite role being Charity in Barnum. Keri is also heavily involved at Retford Little Theatre, on the committee, set building and has directed 3 plays with her 4th this November. ‘It’s an honour to direct my first musical with such talented young people and an amazingly strong creative team. Retford is really lucky to have The MOB.’ - Keri

Sarah started dancing at a young age and attended Staples Dance Academy, Retford. She was a founding member of The MOB and has fantastic memories from her time with the group. The MOB is very important to her and she has helped backstage and chaperoned during rehearsals for many years. At 16 she joined the Retford Musical Theatre Company and

ALLWRITTENWAYTOOMUCH;SHOULD HAVEBEENMAX15OWORDSEACH

has played numerous lead roles in both Musicals and Pantomimes and is still an active member. This is Sarah’s first time in the role of Assistant Director and she is over the moon to have the opportunity to give encouragement and guidance and share the skills that she has learned with current MOB members. Sarah says she has learnt just as much from the MOBsters as they have from her. She has enjoyed working with such a great creative team and hopes you all enjoy the show, as everyone has worked so hard and she is very proud of all the Mobsters xx

BECCA WHITE choreographer

Becca has been part of The MOB since she was 10 years old, with her love for musical theatre and dance blossoming long before then whilst training at Staples Dance Academy – she later went on to teach tap grades there.

As a MOB member, Becca became Dance Captain and Assistant Choreographer and is now the group’s resident choreographer. She has recently joined Worksop Light Operatic Society and supported their production of Little Shop of Horrors, whilst also

teaching tap and musical theatre classes at Zebra Studios in Worksop. Becca loves to include a little tap number in all of our shows if she can squeeze one in. She is also a self-confessed musical theatre fanatic and knows the words to just about every MT song out there!

Becca loves working with the young people at The MOB to improve their confidence and their skills on the stage. Last year Becca directed and choreographed The MOB’s hugely successful 30th anniversary concert, ‘Musical Magic!’ and hopes that The MOB’s success will continue for at least 30 years more!

Pete is a professional Musical Director and Vocal Coach, based in South Yorkshire / East Midlands. Originally from the Lake District, Pete trained at York St. John University, gaining a degree in Music with Education. After just over a decade working as a primary school teacher, Pete became a freelance musician

in 2018. Alongside his role as MD of The MOB, Pete works as Musical Director for several other local societies, including Worksop Light Operatic Society, TaylorMade Productions, and Whitwell Players Amateur Dramatics Society, and most recently has taken up a post at Dearne Playhouse Musical Theatre Company. He is also choir leader for Sinfonia Viva’s choir ‘Sing Viva’, conductor of ‘Women of Welbeck’ Choir, vocal coach at Zebra Studios, Worksop, and the Assistant Musical Director for the Northern Musical Theatre Orchestra, based at the Majestic

SHOW SYNOPSIS

In Kansas, young Dorothy Gale often dreams of what may lie over the rainbow. One day she finds out, as she is swept away in her farmhouse by a tornado, along with her dog Toto, to the Land of Oz. When her house crushes the Wicked Witch of the East, the Wicked Witch of the West vows revenge and comes to claim her sister’s powerful ruby slippers. Dorothy wants to go home, so the Good Witch Glinda magically transfers the slippers onto Dorothy’s feet and tells her that only the great Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City can help her. Dorothy sets off along the yellow brick road with The Wicked Witch on her trail and there she encounters Scarecrow, Tinman and Cowardly Lion, each of whom also seek something from the Wizard…

MAKING MAGIC

We all know the magic of a great theatre experience, which transports us to a different time or place. We thought you would like to know a little bit about what has been going on behind the scenes for our production of the Wizard of Oz…

Puppet Mayhem

For the first time in our 30 year history, The MOB are using puppetry in our production this year. Our custom-made Toto puppet has been designed and made by Bryony McCombie-Smith. A graduate of Nottingham Trent University, Bryony is now a puppeteer and community artist based in Nottingham. Two of our Mobsters have been chosen to be Toto’s puppeteers and have had great fun learning new skills. In the autumn we are planning a puppeteering workshop so that all of our members can experience this ancient theatre art. www.bmccombiesmith.com

Flying High

Once again, The MOB are teaming up with Flying 1st Class Aerial Entertainment to add an exciting and different perspective and real Wow factor to our show. Aerial flying allows us to share another artistic skill with our young members and we are always grateful to John and Kellie from Flying 1st Class for their patience, the way they build confidence in our MOBsters, and for the opportunities they offer the whole company, not just those ‘flying’ in our production. www.flying1stclass.com

Whizz, Bangs and SFX

The MOB are delighted to be working with Vinnie Hemmings as their lighting designer this year. Creating the right mood with lighting is critical to all productions, but especially so with The Wizard of Oz with its swift changes from the wide, open plains of Kansas, to Munchkinland, to The Emerald City and a few scary places in between. Vinnie has a wealth of experience working as a freelance lighting designer both nationally and internationally and will be showing off his special effects skills in this production. www.vinniehemmings.co.uk

Projection

Those of you familiar with The Wizard of Oz will know that Dorothy is whisked away by a Tornado to Munchkinland. Creating this very special effect for us this year will be xxxxxxxxxxxxx. Look out for xxxxx work in The Wizard’s chamber too, we know you will be impressed.

Stage Crew

Special thanks to our stage crew who will be pulling this all together for us on show week. The Majestic Theatre is run entirely by volunteers but that doesn’t mean they don’t know their stuff. We are privileged to have a team of highly experienced people working back stage changing sets, in the fly tower pulling cloths in and out and on our sound desk ensuring you can hear everything clearly.

Puppeteer AVA SOFTLY-ROBINS

Ava is playing the part of Toto for the Friday and Saturday matinee shows. It is her first year at MOB and she has felt very welcomed by The MOB family. Ava has been attending a Drama School in Rotherham for the last 5 years and after watching a previous MOB performance, she was inspired to join the group. Ava sees her future in the world of drama and arts. She is looking forward to taking a singing exam in December and hopes to use this to take on future roles within The MOB and beyond.

Puppeteer THEODORE SMITH

Theodore joined The MOB in 2022 and last year he played his first role as Billy in School of Rock. He is relishing the challenge of puppeteering this year with his role as Toto. A huge performing arts fan, Theodore goes to theatre clubs at school and has attended Staples Dance Academy since he was 3. As well as his role in School of Rock, last year he was also Bruce in his school production of Matilda and Baby Face in the SDA production of Bugsy. He also enjoys reading and loves Pokémon.

DOROTHY

CERYS PRITCHARD

Cerys has been a member of The MOB for 3 years and has loved every minute of it. This year she is playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, and this is her first main role at the age of 13. Outside of The MOB, Cerys loves acting, singing, reading, sewing, crafts, playing hockey, archery, and girls rugby, but most of all, trips to the theatre to watch other musicals! Prior to this show, Cerys’s proudest moment was singing with her choir at The Royal Albert Hall in 2022. She is extremely excited to perform on stage and hopes you all enjoy the show.

DAISY BRAMMALL

Daisy began her musical theatre journey at the age of 6 with the Young Theatre Company in Worksop, where she stayed until 2020 after playing Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and decided to come to The MOB in search of more conventional performances. Her first role was Humpty Dumpty in Shrek followed by one of the Mer Sisters in The Little Mermaid, Theo in School of Rock and finally Dorothy today. Her favourite thing about The MOB is the countless musical/vocal opportunities along with the supportive community and she cannot wait to play as Dorothy for you all.

AUNT EM / GLINDA, WITCH OF THE NORTH

This is Grace’s first full production with The MOB after joining last year, just in time for the anniversary concert. She has been welcomed to the group with open arms and can’t wait to fly across the stage as Glinda (despite her fear of heights!). Grace has been performing since the age of 3 with WLOS and YTC in Worksop. Productions include musicals, concerts and Pantos. Funnily enough, she has actually been to Oz before, playing a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz when her mum was Glinda, so she is proud to hold the wand just like she did.

Naomi is playing the part of Glinda and can’t wait to take to the stage! This will be Naomi’s 7th show with The MOB. Being a MOB member for 7 years has offered Naomi many opportunities and various roles in previous productions, her favourite being ‘Aquata’, a mersister in The Little Mermaid, due to the strong dance influence that came with the role! Naomi loves being a part of The MOB, especially building friendships and spending time with other Mobsters. She can’t wait for you to see this year’s production and hopes you will all enjoy it.

HUNK / SCARECROW

Abbey has been in The MOB since 2019 and this is her first lead role. Her favourite show so far has been Shrek, The Musical, where she got to play a bling mouse and loved the fantastic costumes! She has enjoyed meeting so many new people and made lifelong friends. Abbey has lots of hobbies, including gymnastics, and has also performed at Lincoln Theatre Royal, played Matilda in her school musical and even choreographed for a local pantomime that she was in! She is so excited to play Scarecrow and hopes you enjoy the show.

Toby will be playing the role of Scarecrow, a silly, goofy character for all to love, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone. This will be Toby’s fourth show with the MOB, with roles including Grimsby in The Little Mermaid and Mr Mooneyham in School of Rock. As well as The MOB, Toby spends a lot of time practising and performing with Staples Dance Academy where he participates in many different forms of dance. Toby is looking forward to taking to the stage with The MOB again alongside good friends and cannot wait to make everyone laugh.

GRACE NELSON NAOMI EARL ABBEY MITCHELL TOBY CUPIT

HICKORY / TINMAN

MATTHEW HEARD

Matthew joined The MOB at the age of 8 and his first show was Sister Act. He later had a break of a year when Covid hit but joined back in time for The Little Mermaid. It was this show that Matthew truly found his place in The MOB as he made new friends and grew his confidence. Matthew would go on to play his first ever principal character in his MOB journey as Ned Schneebly in School of Rock, and is now looking forward to playing the Tinman for this show, The Wizard of Oz.

HERMIONE HUNT

Hermione is playing the role of Tinman on Saturday and Sunday. Performing on stage is Hermione’s passion and she has been acting since she was 5. She joined MOB in 2019, but unfortunately missed Oliver due to Covid :( Since then, she has played Scuttle in The Little Mermaid and Gingy in Shrek, as well as various other roles with different companies and her school. This year Hermione has been studying hard in preparation for her GCSEs with dreams to become a doctor. This is her first lead role in The MOB and she’s extremely excited to show you their fabulous show!

ZEKE / LION

Oscar has been with The Mob for a whole decade, starting at the age of 8. He can’t wait to play Lion in The Wizard of Oz, although this isn’t the first time he has dressed up as an animal on stage. His favourite part in all The Mob shows, up until this moment, was performing the lovable Donkey in Shrek. He has also played a brother in Joseph, King Triton in The Little Mermaid, and was cast as Dewey Finn in School of Rock. Oscar loves his singing, acting and dancing and is very excited to ‘put ‘em up’.

Charlie is thrilled to play Lion this year, his first principal role. He joined The MOB in 2020 amidst Zoom sessions, meeting everyone (mask-to-mask) some 6 months later. Pinocchio in Shrek followed, a great part, and then his highlight, singing Les Poissons in a ‘French’ accent and the ensuing chaotic scene, as Chef Louis in The Little Mermaid – brilliant! Charlie loves all kinds of music, showing a snippet of his playing skills in School of Rock last year followed by the pit band for The MOB’s Summer School production. In September he plans to study for an Acting Diploma in Nottingham.

OSCAR PINKERTON CHARLIE BUXTON

MISS GULTCH / WITCH OF THE WEST

Mia has been in The MOB for 6 years and has enjoyed every single second of it! She has made lots of best friends and has such amazing memories during her time here. She played Patti Di Marco in School of Rock last year, her first lead role, and she is so excited to now play the iconic Wicked Witch of the West! This character has really challenged her but also further increased her confidence. Mia can’t wait for you all to see her and her amazing Mob family hit the stage again. She hopes you all enjoy the show.

UNCLE HENRY / GUARD

Scarlett embraces the challenge of portraying this iconic villain. She thrives on forging new friendships and exploring her limits. Her roles in School of Rock and The MOB anniversary concert have fuelled her enthusiasm for her debut lead role in this spectacular show. While nerves and excitement intertwine, Scarlett eagerly anticipates sharing the magic of the show and the dedication behind it. Join her on this journey over the rainbow and witness the culmination of hard work and passion in bringing this iconic story to life.

PROFESSOR MARVEL / THE WIZARD OF OZ

BELL OUTOFORDER please knock

Jack joined The Mob in 2021, so this is his third show and he has progressed to playing his first principal role. He has loved taking on the challenge of playing Uncle Henry and the Guard. Outside of The MOB he really enjoys playing tennis and has also been busy completing his silver Duke of Edinburgh award along with his GCSEs. Jack has made some great friends in The MOB and is looking forward to them all performing together in this production of The Wizard of Oz.

Victoria is playing the roles of Professor Marvel and The Wizard of Oz. She has been a part of The MOB for 3 years now. Her favourite moments so far have been her first day where she got to meet loads of amazing people that she gets to perform with, and taking mirror pictures with friends while dressed as a seagull, or a groupie, during dress rehearsals! She has been in two previous shows; The Little Mermaid and School of Rock. Outside of The MOB, Victoria loves acting and her singing lessons and has recently taken up dance lessons too.

LEAVERS

OSCAR PINKERTON

Over my 10 years in The MOB, I have had some amazing experiences. There of course have been disappointments too - just to say, don’t ever tell me to break a leg during show week! My shows have included The King and I, The Wizard of Oz, Sister Act, Joseph, Shrek, The Little Mermaid, and School of Rock. MOB has enabled me to experience and develop a passion for Musical Theatre, has given me opportunities to step out on stage and perform and, of course, has given me friendships that will last a lifetime.

In September I am due to commence a BA in Musical Theatre at Urdang. So, a big thank you to all who have helped me get there: God for the gifts He has given me and those who have helped me develop those gifts, especially Carolyn, Liz, Betty, Pete, Becca, Beth, Dionne, Keri, and Sarah. Also, at Staples Dance Academy, a special thank you to Miss Dawn, Molly, Stacy, and Gracie, and my singing coaches O’Brian Hesson and Diana Evason.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of your support.

JASPER WHITWORTH

I can’t quite believe I am writing a leavers message. My first MOB show in 2017 was Hairspray, and one of my favourite roles was playing Asher in Joseph. I have made great memories and lasting friendships. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Carolyn and Becca for all your help and support, and also to everyone involved with MOB; it couldn’t happen without you all. Thank you. The MOB has given me many opportunities to do what I love, from last year teaching myself how to play the drums for School of Rock, to standing in front of The MOB family singing “The Letter” from Billy Elliott. I would like to thank Dawn Denman for giving me the passion to dance. This September, my next step is to go to SLP Dance College in Leeds to study Professional Dance.

DAISY BRAMMALL

I have been with The MOB for four years, starting out as Humpty Dumpty in Shrek and going on to play the lead role of Dorothy today. I’m so overly excited to be going out with a bang and I’m more than grateful for the opportunities I have had and all the hard work that goes into every show. Acting has played such a huge role in my life that I will never forget but singing has always been my passion, which is why I have made the difficult decision to leave one year early so I can focus on that path. I would like to thank everyone at The MOB for being the amazing, talented people they are and making my time here so incredibly special, and I will make sure to come back to watch every wonderful show that this remarkable group of actors performs X

LOUISA MERRION

Despite only being at The MOB for a short time, I will never forget the memories I have made and the people I have met. All The MOB family were so welcoming towards me when joining School of Rock last year and I had the best time performing in the ensemble. My favorite highlight from School of Rock was performing the song “Dewey’s Confession”. I am very excited to be playing a crow and ensemble member in The Wizard of Oz this year and couldn’t ask for a better last show. I am planning on auditioning for drama schools next year after taking a break this year. I have loved my time at The MOB and will always thank them for being so welcoming and supporting me.
