Starting on July 3rd, families can look forward to a full evening of patriotic fun at Weston’s Hometown Fireworks Celebration, which brings our community together to celebrate both our nation and our City. On July 4th, runners and walkers can participate in the July 4th 5K Run/ Walk at Weston Town Center. A not-to-be-missed event, the Annual Hometown Fourth of July Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m., also with the theme: Two Milestones, One Celebration: America 250, Weston 30. Join us as a participant in the parade or a spectator cheering on your favorite float, band, organization, business or community leader. It is a time for celebration, and Weston is just the place to do it.

Lastly, whether you are participating in a summer camp, joining a recreational league, or attending one of our signature events, I encourage you to take advantage of all Weston has to offer. Together, let us make this a safe, active, and memorable summer.

Raising a child with a developmental disability is a unique journey. Respite is one of those supportive services. Respite is understood as a clinical break that gives parents the opportunity to step back, recharge, and engage in self-care practices. The benefits extend far beyond the momentary break, positively impacting both parents and, ultimately, the entire family dynamic.

One of the primary advantages of respite care is the opportunity for parents to prioritize their mental health and well-being. Respite care allows parents to indulge in time for themselves —whether it’s enjoying a quiet afternoon, pursuing a hobby, or simply having uninterrupted time for other family members. When parents are wellrested and emotionally replenished, they can better connect with their child, creating a more nurturing and harmonious family dynamic.

Acknowledging the need for respite care is not a sign of weakness; it’s a recognition of the challenges inherent to the unique journey of raising a child with a developmental disability. Respite care offers parents the guilt-free opportunity to focus on their wellness, fostering resilience that positively impacts their ability to navigate the unique challenges of raising children. When parents invest in their well-being, they return to their caregiving role with renewed energy and a refreshed perspective. This, in turn, contributes to a more positive and supportive family environment, benefiting the child.

The benefits of respite care extend to siblings as well. Nurturing a child with a developmental disability often monopolizes the time and focus of caregivers. Between rushing to various appointments and tending to the daily needs of their child, parents have little time to devote to additional family members. Respite allows parents to dedicate undivided attention to their other children. With the support of respite, the needs and wants of siblings can be prioritized.

Respite care is an important tool in the toolbox of families raising a child with a developmental disability. It is a lifeline that not only offers parents a well-deserved break but also promotes mental and physical well-being. & Cheerleading was founded in 1995 and has proudly been a member of Pop Warner Little Scholars since 2017.

Pre-season conditioning included in the registration and is held Mondays and Wednesdays (6:30PM–8:00PM) starting on June 8th. Beginning July 15th, regular practices are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (6:30PM–8:00PM).

Spots fill quickly at all team levels in football & cheer—early registration is essential.

TACKLE FOOTBALL: Ages 5–14 (6U–14U). Season fee includes the use of helmets, pads, game uniform, and practice jersey. Players provide cleats (no metal), practice pants, and mouthguard.

CHEERLEADING: Ages 5–15. Season fee includes practice shirts, bows, and game/competition uniform use for the season. Participants provide cheer shoes.

The Weston Hawks and Weston Rattlers Baseball Organizations have joined forces to form one travel baseball entity, Weston Travel Ball (WTB). The Hawks and Rattlers have achieved over 173 championships including: FPBL, Pony, AABC, Nations, USSSA, USSSA NIT, USSSA Super NIT as well as #1 Nationally Ranked USSSA Teams. All teams are led by a professional coach who, at a minimum, has played college baseball. Many teams have coaches who have played A, AA, AAA or Major League Baseball. Most people do not think about muscle until they start to lose it. There is no clear moment when it begins. But as early as your 30s, your body slowly starts to lose muscle. The impact of changes in family structure can have varying effects, both short and long term, on an individual, a family member, the family unit, and the extended family environment. While there are many factors that can lead to separation or divorce, the question is often asked about how we can support our children cope, adjust to change, and recover from trauma that may have been experienced. This includes reducing further avoidable distress. An import caveat to the following article is that understanding that some individuals and families experience a sense of relief once the parent’s have split. This may be due to the reduction in conflict within the home, whether it be emotional, verbal, or physical, as well as the chaos and lack of feelings of safety that we all deserve. While this has been proven, the change and past experiences may still have varying impacts. General effects that have been observed and reported include, confusion, anxiety, shame, guilt, fear, anger, isolation, depression, mistrust, behavioral reactions, academic struggles, and social withdrawal.

The following guidelines serve as a start to managing separation and/or divorce.

Increasing awareness: Knowing yourself, your strengths, limitations, personal boundaries and emotional cues can help you to feel more organized and prepared to manage stress and unexpected issues, in a healthy manner. Getting into the practice of recognizing physical changes at the onset of emotion can help to mitigate unwanted outbursts or unbeneficial decision making. If you know that when you get upset your muscles tend to tighten and/or your heart begins to race, this is a good signal for you to take a step back and acknowledge your emotion in order not to cause further distress in the situation for yourself and for your children. This is especially important if you are speaking to your ex-partner in front of your children and the conversation begins to get heated. Emotional regulation is not only important for your health but also important for interpersonal communication, court hearings and trial, decision making and parenting. Therapeutic support may include emotional regulation skills, processing loss of the family unit, problem solving, and navigating changes in your role as a parent to coparent.

You can help your children do the same. First, by modelling the behavior for them and second, by beginning to acknowledge and validate their emotions. Your awareness of your child’s behavior can help you to step in and provide them with healthy coping skills to manage their distress. Always keep in mind, you may not agree with how or why your child is upset but you can help them through the emotion by validating their experience. This helps a child to feel heard and valued for who they are.

Self-Care: The age-old example of placing the oxygen mask on yourself before helping your child or others in an airplane emergency stands true in general but even more so in the event of a separation or divorce. Making sure you are getting adequate rest, eating well, exercising, and taking time for yourself, might sound

redundant and unimportant but if you are tired or overwhelmed and your child comes home with a slight problem, your reaction to them and the problem will likely be a lot different to if you are well rested and level-headed. Keeping up with school demands, work demands, and maybe life in general, can be trying. Give yourself the foundation to take on these challenges as well as the challenges involved in a separation and divorce.

Structure and routine: Humans perform better with structure and good communication. Children rely on their caregivers to provide them with structure until they can apply it themselves. From birth, we rely on our parents to teach and model structure so we can become regulated and have a certain level of expectation about what is to come during the day or week. When change happens, maintaining structure and routine is imperative in order not to increase distress. This is especially true for our younger children and those on who have neuroatypical presentations such as autism etc. Should you be time-sharing, routine and structure should be as similar as possible if not the same. If your expectations were that homework is done after school, chores must be completed, and bedtime is at a certain hour before the separation. These expectations should continue after the separation and carry across to both homes. If the child can learn to expect what is acceptable in both homes, disorganization and disruption can be reduced. This is not only for the benefit of the child but also for each parent. Having a conversation between parents can help this if we are to keep the child’s well-being as a priority. Coparenting sessions are valuable for helping with adjustment to the new family dynamic.

Communication: Communication between parents is imperative and if it cannot be done in a healthy helpful manner for various reasons, there are other options to consider. Programs like Talking Parents or Family Wizard can help maintain communication regarding the child. If you are aware that communication is problematic, make it a general rule that messages cannot be passed through the child and any communication between parents should focus on the child not on the behavior of a parent or how one feels about the other parent. Legal support such as an Attorney, mediator or Guardian ad Litem may be another option should this not be possible.

Outside support and help: Moving through life events such as a change in the family unit, whether it be temporary or permanent, can be made easier by reaching out for support and guidance. Asking reliable family members and friends for help can lessen the stress and demand as you move through the change and cope thereafter. There are many support groups within our community available for single and co-parenting parents. Knowing your legal options as well as what professional therapeutic options are available, can be helpful. Services may include learning skills to help your child transition, coparenting skills and individual therapy are all available for all ages.

Parents should always be aware of their options for divorce and related interventions. This includes litigation, alternative dispute resolutions such as mediation, parenting coordinators, and the collaborative divorce process.

Sagemont Preparatory School delivered an outstanding performance at the recent NASA-hosted Aerospace Engineering Competition, earning top honors among a competitive field.

Sagemont Prep’s High School aerospace engineering team secured first place in the Mercury Division Design Challenge, a rigorous engineering event that challenged students to design and construct a fully functional mailbox prototype inspired by a space mission. Indian Trace students experience Spanish as a meaningful journey. Led by Mrs. Beatriz Cuervo, students build awareness and appreciation through language and culture. Music and games become communication and interaction skills. Our Spanish Club extends this

experience as students showcase their talents through music, art, poetry, and performance, and represent the school at the District World Languages Showcase. Beyond language learning, the club invites students to embrace Hispanic culture through the arts while building confidence, responsibility, and a strong sense of self.

Music is a universal language here at Indian Trace, and every year students take a musical trip around the world! Beyond exploring global connections to music, Mrs. Angelica Saintelus guides students through playing instruments, exploring music through literature, and expanding upon their musical tastes. As the humidity rises and the school year winds down, a familiar energy settles over the hallways of Cypress Bay High School. It’s testing season and the pace is similar to that of a marathon of AICE, AP, and Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) exams that can leave even the most seasoned students feeling stressed. This year alone, The Bay is on track to administer almost 15,000 exams in the final months of the school year. However, at the home of the Lightning, the atmosphere isn’t just permeated by silence and the sights of No. 2 pencils. Instead, it is defined by a roar of collective motivation known as the “Bring the Thunder” campaign.

THE HIGH STAKES OF THE SEASON

Cypress Bay is nationally renowned for its academic rigor and its massive student body. Right here in our own backyard, The Bay administers more Cambridge AICE exams annually than any school in the world! For many, April and May represent the culmination of a year’s worth of latenight study sessions and complex student-led research. With college credits, scholarships and graduation requirements on the line, the mental toll is significant. School leadership and student organizations recognized that to maintain their high standards, they needed more than just study guides; they needed a culture of emotional support and high-energy encouragement.

WHAT IT MEANS TO “BRING THE THUNDER” AT THE BAY

The “Bring the Thunder” campaign is a multi-faceted initiative designed to shift the narrative of testing from a period of stress to a season of performance. The phrase itself plays on the “Lightning” mascot, suggesting that while lightning is the flash of brilliance, the thunder is the impact, the noise, and the undeniable presence of the student body.

THE CAMPAIGN MANIFESTS IN SEVERAL KEY WAYS:

Visual Encouragement: As you approach the white gates, there are reminders everywhere to “bring the thunder”. The catwalk, courtyard, classrooms and every corner of campus are covered with motivation for all students and faculty during this season.

The Power of Presence and Peer Support: Having

id entified a universal need for additional academic support, student honor society members willingly volunteer their time during lunches to tutor their peers at pop-up booths throughout common areas. These opportunities for remediation and refreshers exemplify the power of community and presence deeply embedded in the Lightning Legacy.

Digital Hype: Und erstanding the power of social media, student and staff Instagram accounts, such as the Bay’s Principal, Mr. Souza’s (@principalcbhs), Student Government (@cbhs_sga) and CBTv (@cypressbaycbtv) highlight “spark notes” which are pep-talk segments to inspire and motivate students to “Bring the Thunder” into every exam room.

BALANCING PERFORMANCE WITH WELLNESS

While “Bringing the Thunder” sounds intense, the campaign also emphasizes the importance of the “calm before the storm.” Support staff use the season to push “Thunder Wellness” tips, reminding students that a high score shouldn’t happen at the cost of your mental health. They advocate for the “Three Pillars of Testing Success”: 1. Consistent Sleep: Moving away from the “all-nighter” culture.

2. Strategic Nutrition: Providing snacks to ensure no student tests on an empty stomach and regularly sending reminders of the importance of healthy breakfasts to set the tone for success.

3. Mindful Breathing: Teaching quick grounding techniques to use when challenges arise midadministration.

A COMMUNITY EFFORT

What makes the campaign truly special is that it isn’t just top-down from the administration. Students are supporting students and that is the heart of the Bay Family. By the time the final bell rings on June 3rd, the thunder will have echoed through the halls, leaving students not just with completed answer sheets, but with a sense of pride in their resilience. Their donations made the vision possible, while the National Honor Society from Cypress Bay High School brought it to life—painting, assembling, and transforming the room with care and enthusiasm.

The Sensory Room is open to any student who needs

a quiet moment to regroup. Inside, children will find a variety of stations offering proprioceptive, tactile, movement, auditory, calming, and vestibular input.
