As summer comes to a close and a new school year begins, I find myself reflecting on how quickly life moves and how much can change in just a few short months. For many of us, this summer brought special milestones—graduations, family celebrations, summer travels, and, for some parents, the emotional experience of helping a child move away to college. As a new school year begins, it is an exciting time in the City of Weston. This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate Weston’s 30th Anniversary on September 3rd, marking three decades of building a community that is consistently recognized as one of the best places to live, work, and raise a family. Since incorporating in 1996, Weston has grown while remaining true to its original vision of a safe, family-oriented community with exceptional parks, outstanding schools, and beautiful neighborhoods. Throughout this anniversary year, we have celebrated this milestone at special events across the City, and we invite you to discover more about the people, planning, and milestones that shaped Weston. Coming this September, do not miss our special podcast series featuring Weston history as told by the City’s first City Manager, John R. Flint. Through first-hand stories and reflections, you’ll hear how the vision for Weston became the community we know and enjoy today. As students return to classrooms, I would like to welcome back all our students, parents, teachers, and school staff. Education is one of the cornerstones of our community, and we are proud of the outstanding A-rated schools that help make Weston such a special place to call home. With the return to school comes increased traffic around our campuses. Please slow down in school zones, remain alert for children walking and biking to school, obey crossing guards, and allow extra travel time during the morning and afternoon commute. If your children bike or scooter to school, please ensure they wear properly fitted helmets and practice safe riding habits. y Art Beats is a student-led nonprofit organization dedicated to providing arts-based programming to individuals with special needs and developmental disorders. Nikash Chandra, a student at Cypress Bay High School, founded the 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2024 to spread passion through his interests: art and music. After volunteering with his piano teacher, he discovered how students with autism found confidence and self-expression through music and the arts. Chandra explains that instead of adding another commitment into the busy lives of individuals with developmental disabilities, My Art Beats brings the activities to them through events at hospitals, summer camps, and more. Today, the nonprofit’s team of 100+ dedicated volunteers have impacted over 800 individuals across Florida. With two chapters, one in Weston and the other in Jacksonville, My Art Beats has partnered with over 15 local organizations and hosted 25 events in the last two years. In November 2025, My Art Beats collaborated with Love Serving Autism at a tennis camp for students with autism when they brought paintbrushes to the courts. Players and volunteers painted dozens of “pet” tennis balls, sparking creativity, conversation, and memories. “My son loves to color but I’ve never seen him so focused on painting before,” a proud parent detailed. My Art Beats has since continued these efforts with Love Serving Autism, hoping to give all kids a chance to share their imaginative ideas.
My Art Beats has also spread its mission to other communities that may not have direct access to the arts. In the past two years, they have hosted numerous events at children’s hospitals, providing creative arts activities to children receiving long-term or ongoing medical care. In July 2026, patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital painted ocean landscapes on seashells guided by artists from My Art Beats. “It’s really important to me that everyone feels empowered by artwork,” Chandra said. On weekends, My Art Beats’ talented group of students perform musical concerts at The Palace at Weston and play piano alongside its residents. Volunteers in My Art Beats gain opportunities to develop leadership and communication skills through their service. Students help plan events, prepare materials, guide participants, and most importantly share their creative mindsets with diverse groups. “Working with My Art Beats has shown how art connects people,” explains Vice President Saanvi Epuri. “It’s amazing to see how simple crayons or paints can brighten so many faces and bring us all together.” My Art Beats hopes to continue expanding its impact in Weston and South Florida. By forming new partnerships with schools, sports centers, and organizations serving individuals with disabilities, they continue to highlight the value of art in building community. A BCPS volunteer is an individual with a sincere interest in contributing to the education of our students. Volunteers actively serve during regular hours at one or more schools or departments, several hours at a special one-time activity or event or work on school projects at home. Under the supervision of school or department personnel, a volunteer provides supportive assistance, which complements and enriches the environment. HOW DO I BECOME A BCPS VOLUNTEER? Complete and submit a volunteer application. Check application status. Wait one week and contact the school or department you selected to check your approval status. Get a volunteer badge at the school or department. This badge may be used at any District location during the school year.
DO’S AND DON’TS OF VOLUNTEERISM DO: Complete an online application form before helping in the school. Assist in the class to which you are assigned. Set a good example for students by your manner, appearance and behavior. Sign in and out when entering and leaving a school campus. Wear a volunteer badge when helping with school activities. DON’T: Give students medication. Access or divulge any student’s grades, records and abilities, which are governed by confidentiality rules and policies. Supervise a classroom or discipline students.
