arvest Drive Inc. has been a nonprofit for the last 34 years and is dedicated to serving families in need throughout our county by collecting and repurposing essential household items that might otherwise go unused. Through the generosity of community members, local businesses, schools, and organizations, we gather donations of toiletries, household goods, clothing, linens, and other everyday necessities. These items are then carefully sorted, organized, and distributed to individuals and families facing financial hardship, food insecurity, housing instability, and other challenging life circumstances. Many families struggle to afford basic necessities that most people take for granted. While food assistance is often available through various programs, essential items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, bedding, towels, and clothing are rarely covered by assistance programs. Our organization helps bridge that gap by ensuring that these critical items reach those who need them most. We believe that every donation has value and every item has the potential to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. By repurposing gently used clothing and linens, along with new and donated household products, we not only provide practical support to families but also promote environmental sustainability by reducing waste and extending the life of usable goods. Throughout the year, we partner with schools, social service agencies, community groups, and local businesses to identify families in need and coordinate distributions. Let me share a funny story with you. When I first moved to Florida I had no idea what hurricanes were like. After all, we did not have them in New York. When I found out, the crazy person I am, I loaded up every conceivable appliance and supply. All my friends would always make fun of me for over preparing. Then one year we had several major storms, they all came knocking on my door for supplies! Also, know the difference between a hurricane watch and warning. A Hurricane Watch is issued when hurricane conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. This is the time to review your emergency plan, gather supplies and stay informed.

Dear Friends:

Over the past two months our city has undertaken numerous efforts to keep our residents informed about three ballot questions that may appear on the November 3rd Election Ballot. These referendums will help shape the future of our great city by addressing how we will conduct our municipal elections, how the City Commission appoints executive leadership, and the future of our public safety infrastructure. An informed community is a stronger community. If you cannot attend or watch any of our eight Townhall Meetings discussing this topic, I hope the following overview helps you understand each proposal before you cast your vote. Charter Referendum #1 - Municipal Election Timing: The first proposed Charter amendment would move Pembroke Pines municipal elections from March to November of even-numbered years. The purpose of this referendum is to consolidate the city’s elections with federal, state, and county elections in an effort to increase voter participation & eliminate the associated costs with hosting a standalone municipal election, based on the data considered by the City Commission. If approved, future municipal elections would take place in November alongside other regularly scheduled elections. Charter Referendum #2 - City Manager Appointments: The second proposed Charter referendum concerns the voting requirement for appointing or removing the City Manager or Acting City Manager. Under the current City Charter, these actions require a supermajority of four-fifths (4/5) vote of the City Commission. The proposed amendment would reduce that requirement to a simple majority of three-fifths (3/5) vote. This proposal is intended to provide flexibility for the City Commission, while still maintaining a strong consensus requirement. Bond Referendum - Public Safety General Obligation Bond: The third proposed ballot question asks voters whether the City should issue a $80 million General Obligation Bond to fund the construction of a new Police-Fire Public Safety Complex. Our current public safety facilities have served our residents and City stakeholders well for many decades, but they are no longer meeting the modern operational requirements of our police officers and Fire-Rescue personnel. The bond would fund an updated five-story Police Department headquarters, a new two-story Fire Rescue Station, and a five-level parking garage. Architectural plans for this project have been designed to support the City’s projected growth and needs over the next 15 to 30 years. Your voice matters. Voting is one of the most important ways residents help guide the future of Pembroke Pines. Whether these measures concern our elections, our city governance, or our public safety infrastructure, your participation ensures that these decisions reflect the needs of our community. I encourage every eligible voter to review each ballot question carefully, inform yourself using helpful resources available on our city website, and make your voice heard on Election Day. The spirit of community was already on full display during a recent service and beautification event spearheaded by our very own District 2 School Board Member, Mrs. Rebecca Thompson. Families and community volunteers came together to support teachers as they prepared their classrooms for the new school year and helped beautify our campus. Their generosity, hard work, and willingness to serve created a tremendous sense of excitement throughout the school.
