With Summer just around the corner, it’s time to choose a Summer Camp for your child. As this is our big Summer Camp issue you will find an array of camps. We have everything from Art, Aviation, Chess, Music, Swim, Tutoring and so much more. If your child is not sure of what they want to do, we have camps that offer it all. New adventures for your children are always a wonderful experience, and they will build lasting friendships.

Hurricane season is right around the corner; it starts on June 1st. We have been very lucky without a storm for the past few years, hopefully we will stay lucky. On this topic, make sure you know what your insurance policy says and what you are and are not covered for. I would also like to give a big congratulations to Commissioner Tom Good from District 1 and Commissioner Michael Hernandez from District 4. They were both reelected in March.

On a personal note, our lives are all so fast-paced and busy that sometimes all we do is work. I am guilty of that! But I recently treated myself to a trip to Italy, it has been on my bucket list for a long time. I went there years ago for a work trip. This trip was with my son and 12 of our friends. We started in Rome, what a beautiful city. There is so much culture, architecture and history there. As I was standing at the Coliseum, it was amazing to think of all the things that happened there and how these buildings are still standing after thousands of years. We then headed to the Sorrento area where we had a beautiful villa with a spectacular view. We could see Mt. Vesuvius, and one morning it had snow caps on the top of it. We got to take day trips to Capri and Positano, which were also gorgeous. The cliffs, the water, the grottos, they were just breathtaking! I mention all this because it is so important for us to take time to enjoy life, stop to smell the roses, be present in every moment and have balance in our lives.

As your Mayor, I want to take a moment to remind everyone that in South Florida, preparation plays a vital role in protecting our families, homes, and community. While hurricane season officially begins June 1st and ends November 30th, readiness is something we should practice year-round.

National Hurricane Preparedness Week, observed May 3rd–9th, is an excellent opportunity to review your emergency plans, check supplies, and ensure you know what to do before, during, and after a storm. Throughout the week, the city will share helpful guidance from the National Weather Service across our social media platforms. I also encourage you to visit our “Pembroke Pines Prepared” webpage at www.ppines.com/hurricane, where you’ll find valuable tools, videos, and resources designed to help you stay informed and prepared. Taking these steps now can make a significant difference later.

As we head into the warmer months, May also serves as National Water Safety Month—a timely reminder of the importance of staying alert around water. With more families enjoying pools and beaches, it’s critical to remain vigilant. Simple precautions, such as active supervision, learning to swim, and understanding basic water safety practices, can help prevent accidents and save lives, especially for children and inexperienced swimmers.

The City of Pembroke Pines remains committed to promoting water safety through education, swimming programs, and our continued partnership with Broward County’s Water SMART initiative. To further support this effort, I invite you and your family to attend our annual Water Safety Day on Saturday, May 2nd, from 10:00AM-12:00PM at the Pembroke Pines YMCA Aquatic Center. This free, family-friendly event will feature interactive activities, safety demonstrations, and valuable information to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Memorial Day is one of the most meaningful observances of the year. While it often marks the beginning of summer for many, it is, more importantly, a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. I invite you to join us on Monday, May 25th at 9:00AM at Fletcher Park for our annual Memorial Day ceremony.

This special observance will include a presentation of colors by our Police and Fire Honor Guard, a wreath-laying ceremony, and remarks from veterans and community leaders. Fletcher Park, named after Donnith H. Fletcher—the first Pembroke Pines resident to lose his life in the Vietnam War—serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by members of our community.

I hope you will join us as we come together in remembrance, gratitude, and unity. By preparing, staying informed, and supporting one another, we continue to make Pembroke Pines a safer and stronger community for all.

• Monumentalizing the Trace: presents the first solo exhibition by the artist duo Traizman and Zurilla. Structured as a continuous installation that unfolds across the gallery, the exhibition constructs an immersive environment in which image, material, and space intersect. Summer can be a powerful time for growth, not just a long break from school.

As a child therapist, I see summer as an opportunity to build skills, confidence, and healthy habits through sports and activities that kids already love.

Keep a flexible, predictable rhythm: Children and teens do best when they know generally what to expect, even when schedules are lighter. Create a simple daily rhythm that includes movement (sports, swimming, biking), a bit of learning, downtime, and social time. Posting this schedule on the fridge or in your child’s room reduces arguments and helps them transition between activities more smoothly.

Think of the day in blocks rather than by the minute: “morning practice,” “midday chill,” “afternoon activity,” and “evening winddown.” Keeping the order consistent while allowing choices inside each block gives kids both structure and a sense of control.

Use sports to build life skills: Sports and physical activities are ideal for teaching skills like patience, teamwork, perseverance, and emotional regulation. Instead of focusing only on scores or performance, notice and praise specific behaviors: “I like how you kept trying after that missed shot,” or “You showed great sportsmanship when you encouraged your teammate.”

Set small, clear goals with your child or teen, such as “practice free throws for 10 minutes three times a week” or “run one extra lap without stopping.” When they meet these goals, acknowledge the effort, not just the result. This builds a growth mindset that carries into school and friendships.

Mix structured and unstructured play: Camps, leagues, and classes provide instruction and social opportunities, but kids also need unstructured time to experiment and be creative. Encourage pick-up games in the neighborhood, backyard obstacle courses, or self-designed “mini-Olympics.” Let them invent rules,

create team names, and keep score; this kind of play strengthens problem-solving and leadership skills.

For adolescents, consider giving them a role in planning and leading activities for younger siblings or neighbors. Teaching a skill—like dribbling, swimming basics, or stretching—deepens their own mastery and builds responsibility.

Plan for independence and downtime:

Summer is a great time to grow independence. For 7–10-year-olds, that might mean packing their own sports bag, filling their water bottle, or setting out their clothes for practice. For teens, it could involve managing their practice schedule, using a calendar app, or communicating with coaches.

Downtime matters too. Help kids choose a few “recharging” activities that are not screen-based: stretching, drawing play diagrams, reading about their favorite athletes, or journaling about goals. Learning to rest intentionally supports mental health and helps prevent burnout.

Keep communication open:

Regularly check in with your child or teen about how activities are feeling: “Do you still enjoy this?” “What feels too easy or too hard?” Being willing to adjust intensity, switch sports, or take a short break teaches them to listen to their bodies and minds. Your message should be effort and enjoyment matter more than perfection.

For more than 50 years, Lighthouse of Broward has served as a trusted local resource for children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. As the only private nonprofit organization in Broward County offering comprehensive services for children and adults with vision loss, Lighthouse of Broward has become a guiding light for families navigating this journey.

Through its youth-focused programs of Bright Beginnings, the David and Jean Colker KIDS Program and TeenLIFE, families can feel confident that their children are supported by experts who understand both the mechanical and emotional aspects of vision loss.

The Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program serves children, from birth through age five, and their families and focuses on the earliest and most critical stages of development. Because many early milestones are typically learned through visual interaction, the program equips parents and caregivers with tools to nurture learning in new ways. Children explore assistive technology, build social and sensory skills and

develop curiosity about their surroundings while families become empowered partners in laying the foundation for lifelong growth.

For children ages six to 13, the David and Jean Colker KIDS Program offers year-round enrichment that supports daily living skills, social connection and self-confidence. Children participate in STEAM-based activities, practice safe travel and strengthen independence in a structured, encouraging environment. On a beautiful evening at Silver Palms Elementary, our campus transformed into a peaceful and magical space for one of our most beloved traditions, Reading Under the Stars. As the sun began to set and the sky filled with twinkling stars, our Kindness Crew families arrived with blankets, lawn chairs, and favorite books in hand. The excitement was unmistakable as students and parents prepared to spend the evening celebrating the joy of reading together.

Soon, the field became a cozy patchwork of colorful blankets spread across the grass. Families snuggled close together. Children curling up beside their parents, siblings leaning shoulder to shoulder as books opened to the promise of new adventures. The gentle rustle of turning pages and the soft voices of parents reading aloud created a calm, heartwarming atmosphere across our campus.

As the evening unfolded, it was wonderful to see our Dolphins fully immersed in the world of stories. Some students traveled back in time through historical tales, imagining life in another era. Others laughed at silly characters, followed brave heroes on exciting quests, or explored magical lands filled with imagination and wonder. With every page turned, children were not only reading, they were discovering, dreaming, and falling in love with the adventures that books provide.

Teachers and staff walked among the families, greeting students, sharing book recommendations, and joining in the joy of reading. Many paused to listen to students read aloud, celebrating their growing confidence and love for literacy. It was a beautiful reminder of the strong partnership between our school and families, working together to nurture lifelong learners.

Events like Reading Under the Stars highlight what makes the Silver Palms community so special. Our Kindness Crew families value reading and understand its powerful role in academic success and personal growth. Children who read regularly build stronger vocabulary, develop deeper comprehension, and become confident learners. Beyond academics, reading also creates meaningful moments of connection within families.

Perhaps the most memorable part of the night was simply seeing families spending uninterrupted time together. In a fast-paced world, it was refreshing to watch parents and children slow down, snuggle under blankets, and share stories beneath the night sky. Those quiet moments, smiles over a favorite page, laughter at a funny character, or the excitement of reaching the next chapter are what inspire a lifelong love of reading.

As the evening came to a close, families packed up their blankets but carried home something even more meaningful: memories of a peaceful night filled with stories, imagination, and togetherness. Reading Under the Stars was more than just an event. It was a celebration of literacy, family connection, and the joy of getting lost in a good book.

The Broward County National High School Football Showcase returns August 27th–29th, bringing some of the nation’s top-ranked high school football programs to Greater Fort Lauderdale for a highly anticipated weekend of elite competition and national exposure.

Now in its fifth year, the showcase is presented by Broward Education Foundation, the only 501(c)(3) organization dedicated solely to supporting Broward County Public Schools. The event was created to elevate Broward County’s already strong reputation as a national powerhouse for high school football talent.

“We all know that to be the best, you have to play the best. That vision was championed by Shawn Cerra and Dr. Kevin Perry, and together we created this national event five years ago to elevate Broward County’s phenomenal high school football programs,” said James A. Knapp, President and CEO of Broward Education Foundation.

This year’s showcase will feature eight Broward County high schools facing off against eight of the nation’s top-ranked teams. Participating programs include nationally recognized powerhouses such as St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage, Bishop Gorman (NV), DeSoto (TX) and Sierra Canyon (CA), among others. Games will be played at venues throughout greater Fort Lauderdale, drawing athletes, coaches and fans from across the country.

The games will be broadcast or live streamed on ESPN-affiliated networks, providing national visibility for both the players and Broward County as a premier destination for high school athletics.

Showcase continues to solidify its reputation as one of the premier high school football events in the country, shining a spotlight on Broward’s exceptional talent while creating lasting impact both on and off the field.

The showcase also reflects Broward Education Foundation’s broader commitment to supporting student success. Broward Education Foundation remains the only education foundation in the country with a dedicated athletic arm, reinforcing the importance of athletics as a pathway to opportunity and achievement.

In addition, the foundation created a groundbreaking partnership with SponsorPlace, a platform designed to simplify sponsorship management and create new revenue opportunities for K–12 schools. Broward County Public Schools is the first district in the nation to adopt the system, connecting schools with local businesses to support athletics, performing arts and student programs.
