Dear Parkland Residents,

As early as 5:00AM, runners and bikers assemble for Saturday morning and weekday runs and bike rides throughout the City of Parkland. This group of athletes and triathletes who are all at different levels, assemble at the crack of dawn to train and practice physical fitness, challenge personal records, and support each other. As runners and bikers, they often have a perspective of the road that is much different from that of motorists, and they see things others do not detect. Over the summer, I met with members of some of these athletic groups who shared these perspectives about road safety with me. I came away thinking of the bigger picture: As a community, we should be mindful of how motorists, bikers, runners, those who use wheelchairs, children walking to school, and more, can more effectively share our sidewalks and roads. For the past couple months, the City of Parkland and Parkland-BSO have focused on this bigger picture via social media messaging on sidewalk and road safety, beginning with our involvement in the national Walk Bike & Roll event on October 4. During the event, City of Parkland City Commissioners and staff greeted elementary students arriving at school and handed out toys and safety tips for children getting to school on foot, bikes, scooters, and more. Throughout the month of October, the City also focused on heightening awareness of Florida’s bike safety laws. A number of TikTok challenges out there are causing serious safety issues for teens, especially. The BSO-Parkland District stressed the importance of bike and electric scooter safety education and the huge role parents play in the way their teenagers adhere to the laws. This month, the City’s social media will highlight the importance of sharing the road—something that will benefit all groups, whether younger children, teens, adult running and biking groups, or motorists. I think it is important to remember that the bikers who get up at the crack of dawn and ride in the bike lanes are our neighbors or family members; and the teens and younger kids who ride scooters and bikes through the neighborhood are our children. We are all part of this community, and once we are able to see ourselves and our children as participants in each of these groups, we will truly be sharing the roads in the City of Parkland. Dear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses,

Can you believe the Holidays are almost here?! It seems like 2023 went by fast. I want to thank everyone in the City of Coral Springs for making our 60th Birthday special. We had many great events for and with the community and I am looking forward to many more in the rest of this year and in 2024. On December 2, our City is hosting Downtown in December on the City Hall lawn and we would love to see you. Please also save Wednesday, December 13 for our annual Holiday Parade! For all of our City events, please visit our website at www.CoralSprings.Org/events. In case you did not know, I and the entire City Commission host office hours monthly to connect with you and be available to you. You can see our hours on the website and call our Executive Assistant, Luwam Ghermay, to make an appointment with any of us. Over the years, my wife, Brenda, and I have been fortunate to raise five beautiful children in Coral Springs. While they are all grown, I know that our teens are a considerable and important dynamic of our community. If you would like to share any ideas as to how the City can better serve our teenagers, please email me at Sbrook@Coralsprings.gov. I have often thought that we could benefit from having a teen committee. Please let me know your thoughts. This past year, we also celebrated the City ’s 20th Anniversary of our Public Art Program. I am very proud that we started it when I was a City Commissioner back in 2003 and I love so many of the pieces we have in our City. Please look out for something very special next year to celebrate our 21st YEAR of PUBLIC ART! I am proud to say that we passed this year’s budget unanimously with no controversy. We were able to increase our reserves, keep our taxes low and make a few new investments in people and positions, including our new Education Manager and Sustainability Manager to name a couple. If you read this wonderful periodical, you likely know how much Coral Springs invests in our youth. We do so by supporting numerous sports programs, supporting 49 parks, by allowing our youth to participate in learning about Fire Safety and the Police Explorers. As we diversify our tax base and focus on downtown redevelopment, we are sure you will see many new family restaurants, we will hear more live music and we will see an expansion of our Museum’s presence. Our City is on the move! We have momentum and we are excited for what the future has in store. We will be hosting a Visioning Summit in January and we welcome your participation before then. Our City is also proud to work with Habitat for Humanity in 2023 and 2024 to bring over a dozen affordable housing units into Coral Springs that will help several deserving families afford to continue living here in our beautiful City. 6:30AM-12:00 PM. Soldier rush is a patriotic obstacle course 5K design to challenge participants of all skill levels. Participants must overcome various physical challenges such as climbing over walls carrying objects and more. They must do all these various tasks over grass and trail 3.1 miles. Soldier Rush now in its eight year is the epitome me of the military Boot Camp obstacle race. However, this disconnect was bridged on Oct 12, when BSO Parkland hosted “Coffee with a Cop” at Carmela’s Coffee. Coffee with a Cop is more than just a cup of coffee, it’s a reminder that true community safety is a joint effort. In Parkland, the event served as a shining example of how a simple gesture of sharing coffee can lead to a greater understanding and a safer, more united community. he question of whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) could or will take over the world has become a topic of great fascination and concern as technology continues to advance and AI becomes increasingly sophisticated. This ongoing conversation has been fueled by the advent of Chat GPT, along with the exponential growth in computing power. In the realm of investments, a significant shift occurred approximately 15 years ago that could be seen as a form of takeover, specifically the potential extinction of the traditional financial advisor. Born out of the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the founders of Betterment sought to revolutionize the world of financial planning by creating a platform that relied solely on computer algorithms. The concept of robo-advisory, at its core, involved individuals completing a detailed questionnaire about their financial situation, goals, and risk tolerance. In return, they would receive an ideal investment portfolio generated by an algorithm. This approach offered the advantage of discovering the most efficient portfolio for an individual while eliminating the cost of a human advisor. However, it is important to consider what was overlooked in this approach. While the cost of a human advisor was eliminated, so too were their experience, judgment, emotional intelligence, empathy, and genuine concern for the investor’s well-being and their family. These elements turned out to be elemental in guiding investors through various market movements and managing their investments with care. The fundamental flaw: An algorithm cannot override human instincts, which play a vital role in determining long-term investment outcomes, making it a critical factor in programmed investing. PARKLAND RANGERS TACKLE FOOTBALL The Parkland Rangers Tackle Football and Cheerleading program is part of the Gold Coast Pop Warner, Inc. Pop Warner’s oldest football and cheer program with safety as its top priority. Pop Warner’s commitment to academics is reflected in the program by requiring participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play and the little scholars’ program which awards college scholarships to deserving students at the National Scholar Banquet annually. THE DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA By Dr. David Yudell

rotecting children from the potential dangers of the internet and social media has become a main goal of parenting. Here are some strategies parents and caregivers can implement to safeguard children: 1. Open Communication: Establish open and honest communication with your child about social media. Discuss the potential risks and dangers associated with it, such as cyberbullying and online predators. Encourage them to come to you if they encounter any concerning situations or individuals online. Educate about strong passwords (require younger children to give you a copy), not sharing personal information and caution about accepting friend requests. Create an environment where your child feels comfortable coming to you with any concerns or issues they may encounter online (Trust and Support). Assure them that you are there to support and guide them through any challenges they may face. 2. Set Age Restrictions: Many social media platforms have age restrictions for a reason. Ensure that your child is old enough to use a particular platform. Younger children do not have the emotional maturity or understanding to navigate the complexities of social media. Add the concept of Privacy Settings. If they are too young to understand the concept they likely shouldn’t be on the site. 3. Monitor Online Activity: Regularly monitor your child’s online activity. Familiarize yourself with the platforms (imperative for their privacy settings). Consider using parental control software or apps that allow you to track and limit their online interactions.

4. Set Boundaries and Time Limits: Establish clear rules and boundaries regarding social media usage. Set limits on the amount of time your child can spend on social media each day and establish technology-free zones, such as during meals or before bedtime. Encourage them to engage in offline activities and hobbies. 5. Be a Role Model: Children often learn by observing their parents’ behavior. Be a positive role model by demonstrating responsible social media use. Show them how to engage in meaningful conversations, share appropriate content, and respect others’ privacy and boundaries online. 6. Encourage Reporting: Teach your child how to report and block individuals who engage in inappropriate or harmful behavior online. Make sure they understand that it is essential to report any instances of cyberbullying, harassment, or suspicious activity to you or a trusted adult. Teach them about the permanence of digital footprints and the importance of thinking before posting or sharing anything online It is crucial for parents, educators, and society as a whole to be aware of these negative impacts and take steps to mitigate them. Open communication, setting boundaries, and promoting responsible social media use can help protect children from the potential harm associated with excessive social media consumption. • Obey posted speed limits. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding was a factor in 27% of fatal accidents with a teen driver in 2019. Teenagers, like many adults, may be tempted to drive faster than the posted speed limit, especially if they see their parent engaging in this behavior. Talk to your teen about obeying the speed limit and model this behavior for them as well. • Avoid distracted driving. The NHTSA reports that “dialing a phone number while driving increases your teen’s risk of crashing by six times, and texting while driving increases the risk by 23 times”. Teens should avoid using a cellphone at all – even if it is hands-free. Another risky activity that can cause distractions is driving with passengers other than a parent. Florida is one of only five states that allow newly-licensed drivers to transport passengers. Other distracting activities that should be avoided are switching radio stations and eating or drinking.

• Only drive during optimal conditions. Driving at night, especially late at night, can raise the risk of an accident – visibility is lower, there are more impaired drivers on the road, and your teen could be drowsy. Similarly, driving during inclement weather also raises accident risks; roads could be slippery from the rain or there could be low visibility due to a storm or fog. • Wear a seatbelt. Chances are that your child has grown up wearing one. However, many teens make the poor choice to stop wearing one when they are driving. The NHTSA found that 45% of teen drivers who died in a car crash in 2019 were unbuckled. Make sure your teens understand that wearing a seat belt is the law, but even more important, it can save their lives.

On Sept. 12, Sagemont Preparatory School and Sebastián Yatra, a school alumnus, and a multi-platinum bilingual singer-songwriter, celebrated the opening of the Sebastián Yatra Conservatory of the Arts with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Yatra – a two-time Latin GRAMMYs winner and singer of “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s Encanto – spoke on his time at Sagemont Prep and the unique educational experience the Conservatory will provide students for years to come. Yatra attended Sagemont Prep starting in the third grade and

ark Trails is feeling “All Things FALL” this season as we enjoy all the festivities that it brings. October was a busy month. Our amazing PTA hosted its annual Fall Festival. The theme this year was “The Magical World of Harry Potter” and it was a huge success! Students escaped to Hogwarts where they concocted magical potions, learned spooky spells to cast with their special wands, and learned which “house” they belonged to under the careful supervision of the sorting hat. Teachers and staff passed out bagsful of candy at trunk or treat. A great time was had by all! Classrooms celebrated Halloween together with their fall parties. Students made personalized crafts, played games, and enjoyed tasty treats with their class families. The character parade was a fun day where the kindergarten through 3rd grade students dressed as their favorite storybook character while the 4th and 5th graders showed off their vocabulary and idiom costumes. So clever!!! Field Day took place the first week in November. Friendly competition was enjoyed by all grades. PTE hosted a STEAM Family Night on November 8. Students worked together with teachers and participated in building and engineering
