Hello Spring! The weather is fantastic, and events are in abundance, so get out to the parks and the venues with your family and friends and make some wonderful memories together. Remember, time is our most precious asset, we should all spend it pursuing activities that bring us joy. Our two awesome cities offer an array of sports and activities during the upcoming spring months, be sure to sign up soon. Look through the directory for your specific sport or try something new! Our children need a balance of academics and social activities to be well rounded and happy. There are many programs and clubs in our area that offer enrichment, fitness and artistic creativity and we encourage you to explore our directories until you find the right fit.

Deciding on which Spring and Summer Camp your child will attend may seem far off, however, now is the time to start planning. We are featuring the best that Coral Springs & Parkland has to offer in this issue and the next. Camps are an excellent way for your kids to expand their social circles while finding new areas of interest and fun. From the arts and sports camps to the educational and activities camps, there is a fun and affordable option for every child to enjoy.

Many families have made this area home because they understand that Coral Springs and Parkland have some of the best schools in the state of Florida. Our schools offer not only innovative academic programs such as robotics, debate and business classes, but competitive arts and performing opportunities as well. Please read the school articles to see all the wonderful programs, competitions and community service projects our schools and students are involved in. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work.

Dear Parkland Residents,

Can you think of a time when someone did something kind for you out of the blue, or helped you when you really needed it? You felt appreciative, humble, safe.

That warm feeling is the energizing and uplifting power of community service. Every February, students in Broward County Public Schools participate in Day of Service, a voluntary effort that serves worthy causes in our community and touches those in need in a number of areas, in honor of the victims of the February 14, 2018, MSD tragedy.

On Day of Service, students join others to plant gardens, build sensory-friendly toys, pack care bundles, sing songs about hope and love, and lend a helping hand in dozens of areas.

Our sense of community in the City of Parkland is integral to our wellbeing and our abilities to continue to thrive. With the smallest show of support to those around us, we can lift one another up and support our loved ones and our neighbors to help each other achieve our goals in 2026.

February marks the eighth anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. As we commemorate the lives lost this month, let’s not just think of who needs help – let’s do something to serve others.

On Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park, we will hold the eight-year Commemoration event to honor and remember the 17 victims.

Every year this event provides a humbling reminder of those who were taken and how our community comes together to honor them and comfort one another.

This season, think about how you can help someone, a group, or an organization, and offer your time or talents to great causes. These small gestures and moments in time make a big difference. They are the seeds we plant when we set out to build community. Commemoration has taught us that love conquers all and keeps us strong.

And while love is the foundation that fortifies our resolve to support each other, community service fosters the connections that allow us to grow.

I hope this February you feel loved and appreciated. I hope as a citizen of Coral Springs, you take pride in our City and what it offers. I know some of you have financial challenges, others may have health issues and/or other struggles. While the City can’t resolve each issue, I have no doubt that there are healthy solutions. One of those solutions may be provided to you by calling 211. 211 connects people to help of many kinds with care and confidentiality.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, I highly suggest you reach out to Women in Distress. They offer advocacy, counseling and support and can be reached at 954-761-1133. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities in the City, we are always looking for good people. CERT is a great way to make a difference. Our Community Emergency Response Team trains our residents in disaster preparedness, fire safety and light search and rescue. I founded the Community Involved Government Committee in 2002 and we have openings for residents that would like to be a bridge between the Community and the Commission. At the time of writing this, I am up in Tallahassee with my colleagues lobbying and connecting with our State Legislators about various matters of importance to us, including Public Safety and funding for a new Nature Trail at Kiwanis Park amongst many others.

The first thing most people say when they learn I’m the Police Chief isn’t about crime or statistics. It’s usually something like, “Can I ask you a mom question?”

As we begin a new year in Parkland, I find myself having those conversations more often at school events, community gatherings, and even standing on the sidelines of youth sports. And I welcome them. Because before I’m the Police Chief, I’m a mother raising my children right here in Broward County, navigating the same concerns, fears, and hopes as every family in our community.

Over the years, there are a few questions parents ask me again and again.

“Are our schools safe?”

This is the question that sits closest to my heart, both as a Police Chief and as a mom. The way we prepare to protect our schools today is not the same as it was years ago. Our training, coordination, and response planning have fundamentally changed. Deputies train more often, with greater realism and purpose, alongside school staff and partner agencies. We carry the lessons of the past with us every day. We do not forget them and we honor them by staying vigilant, by continuing to improve, and by never becoming complacent. My commitment, professionally and personally, is to ensure our schools are places where children feel safe, supported, and able to focus on being kids.

“What about social media and online threats?”

This is one of the most challenging parts of parenting today. The online world moves fast, and sometimes kids see or hear things before adults do. Law enforcement plays a role in monitoring and responding to threats, but parents are truly the first line of defense. Talk to your kids. Ask questions. Stay curious about their world. I do the same at my own kitchen table.

“Why does traffic enforcement matter so much?”

Especially in a community filled with families, schools, parks, and neighborhoods, traffic safety matters. Speeding, distracted driving, and ignoring stop signs put lives at risk. When we focus on traffic enforcement, it’s about preventing tragedies and making sure everyone gets home safely.

“What can we do to help?”

As we move into this new year together, the answer remains simple: stay engaged. Get to know your neighbors. Attend community events. Speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Teach your children awareness, responsibility, and kindness. When families and law enforcement work together, our community is stronger.

A new year brings reflection, but it also brings renewed commitment. I am honored to serve Parkland as your Police Chief, with the perspective of a parent who understands what families expect and deserve. Together, we’re not only keeping our city safe, we’re shaping the future of it.

A few weeks ago, during the quieter stretch around the holidays, I did something I return to almost every year. I slowed down, stepped away from the noise, and rewatched It’s a Wonderful Life.

Not for nostalgia — for perspective.

Each time, the message lands a little differently. The story isn’t really about money, success, or even sacrifice. It’s about people. About the responsibility we take for those we love, and the quiet, often unseen ways we show up for them. It’s a reminder that an ordinary life, rooted in love and care, can have an extraordinary impact.

That reflection stayed with me — especially as I thought about conversations I’ve had with so many women over the years. Women balancing careers, children, relationships, and aging parents. Women who carry a lot, often without naming it.

And nowhere does that weight show up more clearly than when love, planning, and caregiving begin to intersect.

For most families, this moment doesn’t arrive with drama. It comes quietly. A small concern. A subtle change in routine. A realization that what used to work… doesn’t quite anymore. Everyone senses it, yet no one is eager to speak first.

These conversations are often delayed out of love. No one wants to hurt feelings. No one wants to overreact. No one wants to admit that things are changing.

But what I’ve seen, again and again, is that waiting rarely protects anyone. It usually does the opposite.

Waiting for a fall, a hospitalization, or a crisis isn’t planning — it’s reacting. And once you’re reacting, your options narrow quickly. Decisions feel rushed. Stress rises. Control slips away at the very moment it’s needed most.

Caregiver burnout rarely looks dramatic. More often, it shows up quietly — patience

thinning, sleep deteriorating, and decisions being made from exhaustion instead of clarity. That isn’t a failure of love. It’s what happens when one person carries more than one person was meant to carry.

Guilt plays a powerful role here, especially for women. And guilt exists because love exists. But when guilt starts driving safety or medical decisions, it often increases suffering rather than reducing it. Many families delay action to avoid discomfort, only to realize later that waiting made everything harder for everyone involved.

What often gets missed is this: earlier transitions can preserve dignity longer. When decisions are made while a loved one still has some agency, quality of life often improves. Structure and support don’t diminish independence — they can actually protect it, especially when introduced thoughtfully rather than under pressure.

Doing everything yourself doesn’t mean you’re honoring someone more. Sometimes it simply means you’re exhausted. Honoring a parent also means protecting their wellbeing — and your own — so care can be sustained with patience, presence, and compassion.

The goal isn’t to give up care — it’s to care well, without losing yourself in the process.

When families eventually look back, they almost always say the same thing: We wish we had talked about this sooner. Very few regret having the conversation at all.

If this resonates, the next step doesn’t have to be a decision. It can simply be a conversation — bringing the right people into the room while there is still time and choice. Naming what everyone is already feeling. Asking what’s sustainable. Exploring support without judgment.

Because planning, at its best, isn’t about control. It’s about care.

And care, when it’s rooted in love, is one of the most meaningful acts we offer the people who matter most.

The club offers amateur athletics in track and field (ages 6-18 years old) and cross-country (7-14 years old) for both boys and girls. Sign-ups for cross-country are from July-September and for track and field from November-March. We offer the opportunity to participate and compete in AAU and USATF track and field and cross-country events. Our crosscountry season is from September-December, and our regular track and field season begins in February and ends with the league championship in late May or early June. Youth Ambassadors

Congratulations to our 2025/2026 Youth Ambassador for participating in the National League of Cities Youth Summit, held November 19–20. The event brought together more than 150 students from across the country who serve on youth councils and want to make a difference in their communities.

The summit is unique because it’s organized by youth, for youth. Over two days, participants took part in hands-on workshops and conversations about real issues that affect cities—like accessibility in public spaces, communication, mental health, and how to make parks and gathering places more welcoming for everyone. Workshops such as “Movement Through Communication,” “Integrating Youth Voice in Public Space Planning,” and “Accessibility in Public Spaces” gave students a chance to learn, share ideas, and collaborate with peers from across the nation.

This experience reflects the City of Coral Springs’ strong belief in empowering youth to lead, serve, and speak up for their communities. The ambassadors returned home inspired, grateful, and ready to put what they learned into action.

Youth Ambassadors have also been busy producing a Public Service Announcement (PSA) for our schools around Anti- Bullying and Drug Awareness, as well as celebrating the holidays with the city by assisting and participating in this year’s Parade of Cultures.

They will also be organizing a Teen Self Defense event in April for 11th and 12th grade students to promote safety and awareness as many prepare to head off to college

I was honored to take part in the selection committee for the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce’s first round of Micro-Grant Awards. It was truly inspiring to help recognize 11 outstanding educators whose creative projects will enrich student learning throughout our community.

Each $500 grant supported innovative programs in STEM, the arts, literacy, career readiness, environmental studies, historical education, and student leadership.

When people think about anxiety, they usually imagine fear, worry, or panic attacks. In reality, anxiety often shows up in much subtler ways. It can look like laziness, defiance, lack of motivation, or poor attitude, leading adults to respond in ways that increase pressure rather than provide support. Over time, this can affect a child’s confidence, relationships, and willingness to engage in activities. Recognizing the quieter signs of anxiety are instrumental to helping children develop healthier coping skills.

Children’s varied responses to anxiety are a result of differences between each child’s nervous system, temperament, and past experiences. Some children are naturally more sensitive to stress. Developmental factors, coping skills, and how a child has learned to manage stress all play a role. Anxiety may lead one child to withdraw and shut down, while another becomes perfectionistic, irritable, or behaviorally reactive. These responses are not choices. They are learned ways the body and brain attempt to regain a sense of safety.

One common but overlooked presentation of anxiety is shutdown. Children may withdraw, become unusually quiet, or disengage from activities they typically enjoy. At home, this might look like retreating to their room or avoiding conversations. In school, it can appear as lack of participation. Another frequent sign of anxiety is perfectionism. Anxious children may place intense pressure on themselves to perform well and may struggle to tolerate mistakes. They might redo tasks repeatedly, become frustrated when things are not “just right,” or avoid trying new activities out of fear of failure. While these children are often highly capable, the internal pressure they experience can lead to emotional exhaustion and avoidance. Anxiety can also show up through behavioral reactions. Irritability, emotional outbursts, refusal to participate, or frequent

complaints of physical discomfort (like headaches or stomachaches) can all be expressions of anxiety.

Adults should focus on consistency, emotional safety, and connection is key! Some practical ways to help include:

1. Keeping predictable routines, clear expectations (even between school and home), and advance preparation for transitions can help reduce uncertainty.

2. Breaking tasks or activities into smaller, manageable steps can prevent children from feeling overwhelmed before they begin.

3. Encouraging effort over outcome and normalizing mistakes can ease pressure for children who struggle with perfectionism. Simple reminders that mistakes are part of learning can reduce fear and avoidance.

4. Offering appropriate choices can also help children feel a greater sense of control.

5. For children who shut down, gentle check-ins and extra time to respond are often more effective than repeated prompts or pressure.

6. Most importantly, remaining calm and listening without immediately correcting or dismissing a child’s feelings can help them feel understood and supported. Remember that growth happens gradually. When anxiety begins to interfere with daily life, seeking guidance from a mental health professional can provide children and families with effective tools for managing stress. With understanding and support, children can learn to manage their anxiety and engage more fully in the world around them. Somerset Parkland Academy began 2026 with a strong focus on character development by highlighting the character trait of respect throughout the month of January. Students from each grade level were recognized for demonstrating respect toward their peers, teachers, and the school community. These recognitions reinforce our school’s commitment to cultivating not only academic excellence, but also strong moral values and leadership skills in every student.

Fifth-grade students participated in a highly engaging field trip to JA BizTown, a hands-on financial literacy program operated by Junior Achievement of South Florida. During this immersive experience, students took on real-world roles within a simulated town, where they earned paychecks, opened bank accounts, managed budgets, voted in elections, and learned the fundamentals of customer service and economic responsibility. Complementing this experience, eighth-grade students visited JA Finance Park, where they explored real-life financial decision-making by selecting careers, budgeting for housing and transportation, and planning for future expenses. These programs provide students with practical skills in money management, saving, and long-term planning that extend well beyond the classroom.

Our fourth-grade students explored environmental science firsthand during a field trip to the Everglades Grassy Waters Preserve, where they learned about Florida’s unique ecosystem, native wildlife, and the importance of conservation. This experience brought science lessons to life and deepened students’ appreciation for the natural world around them.

In January, Somerset Parkland Academy students also demonstrated leadership and community involvement beyond campus. One seventh-grade student proudly represented the school at an Inter-School Competition hosted by David’s Swim School, an event dedicated to raising awareness for water safety and swimming education. We congratulate our student on earning second place in the competition while supporting such an important cause.

Athletics also took center stage as January marked the kickoff of the flag football season. Somerset Parkland Academy’s athletic department continues to expand, offering students more opportunities to grow, compete, and develop teamwork and sportsmanship. The final week of January brought the celebration of National School Choice Week, recognizing the value and opportunity charter schools provide to families. As February begins, Somerset Parkland Academy turns its focus to the character trait of honesty, continuing its mission to recognize students who consistently go above and beyond in demonstrating integrity.

On February 2nd, our school will host its annual Innovation Night, an exciting open-house-style event showcasing projects created by Cambridge and high-achieving students. The evening will feature work across art, STEM, mathematics, and literature, allowing families to engage directly with students as they present and explain their projects, creativity, and problemsolving processes.

February is also a month dedicated to love, service, and community outreach. Students will participate in a dress-down week to raise funds benefiting Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, along with the sale of commemorative ribbons to support the same cause. In addition, members of the Honor Society will decorate coffee cup sleeves and distribute them at Fresh Market as a gesture of kindness and community connection.

During this month, Somerset Parkland Academy proudly celebrates Black History Month with the theme “A Century of Black History Commemorations.” This schoolwide initiative honors 100 years of formally recognizing Black history in the United States while exploring its impact through memory, momentum, and future visionaries. Each grade level will be assigned a decade to research and study, culminating in student presentations and a schoolwide parade celebrating each era. Students will also have the opportunity to represent influential historical figures, making history both meaningful and engaging.

Students will additionally take part in the Kids Heart Challenge, a fundraiser supporting the American Heart Association. Through this initiative, students learn about heart health, physical wellness, and essential life-saving skills such as hands-on CPR. The program empowers students with knowledge and skills that promote lifelong health and safety.

The final week of February launches Boosterthon, an interactive fundraising program that combines fitness activities with character education. Boosterthon teaches students valuable life skills such as goal-setting, teamwork, and perseverance, while supporting school programs through a fun and engaging fitness event.

This month, we welcomed families onto our campus twice, on January 14th and 27th for Kindergarten round up events to hear why PTE is the right choice for their educational adventure. Perspective families toured

the building, met our students, heard about clubs, saw a fantastic chorus performance, and heard from our leadership team about many different facets of Park Trails.

On January 5th, our staff was trained on how to implement the Leader In Me program. Teachers learned how to implement lessons and the program into their classrooms and got time to plan. Over the next month teachers will begin to implement lessons.

Finally, as we focus on the next big academic push, we will be opening extended learning opportunities for reading and math for select 3rd through 5th graders and science for all of our 5th graders.

The second quarter at Ramblewood Middle School was a celebration of academic achievement and vibrant extracurricular success. The band performed a memorable winter concert, showcasing the talents of both beginners and seasoned musicians, while the chorus united students in a festive holiday performance that highlighted their growth and collaboration on stage.

The girls volleyball team achieved a remarkable record, advancing to the regional semi-finals through teamwork and determination, with memorable victories and flawless tournament play. Innovation was on full display in the robotics club, where student-led teams designed and built award-winning robots that tackled complex challenges with creativity and technical expertise. T he Entrepreneurship and Innovation Summit in January 2026 marked a defining moment for Sagemont Preparatory School, offering students access to an experience typically reserved for emerging global leaders. As part of an exclusive new partnership with the London School of Economics, Sagemont Prep students engaged in two immersive days of high-level learning, collaboration, and entrepreneurial exploration, bringing Sagemont Prep’s Educational Pillars to life on a global stage.

Throughout the summit, students participated in keynote sessions, masterclasses, and interactive workshops that emphasized building connections and cultivating a strong global perspective. They examined entrepreneurship not only as a pathway to success but as a vehicle for ethical leadership, social responsibility, and meaningful impact. Sessions encouraged students to own their learning by designing future career pathways rooted in initiative, adaptability, and purposeful personal branding.

Students were challenged to align passion with purpose, reflecting Sagemont Prep’s

pillar of pursuing one’s passion, while learning how strategic thinking can transform interests into long-term impact. Honest discussions around setbacks reinforced the value of responsible risk-taking and dynamic measures of growth, helping students reframe failure as an essential step toward resilience, confidence, and leadership.

Hands-on innovation anchored the experience as students applied design thinking, collaborated on real-world problems, and explored how emerging technologies, including AI and no-code tools, are reshaping entrepreneurship. Fireside chats with accomplished entrepreneurs and London School of Economics alumni further connected classroom learning to real-world application.

The Sagemont Prep and London School of Economics summit culminated in a design sprint and pitch experience, where students presented solutions with clarity and confidence. More than a summit, this partnership reflects Sagemont Prep’s commitment to empowering students to innovate for tomorrow, preparing them to see themselves as creators, problem-solvers, and global changemakers.

Wehope everyone had a wonderful winter holiday season and wish you a happy 2026! The second quarter at Ramblewood Elementary was filled with exciting events and memorable moments.

At the end of October, our Dual Language students delivered breathtaking performances to culminate Hispanic Heritage Month. The event was standing room only! Our teachers did an outstanding job preparing students over several months, and their hard work truly shined. We also thank our parents for their support during the Character Parade and the PTO Trunk-or-Treat event. These events provided our students with an amazing fall social experience.

In December, Barnes & Noble graciously hosted a Ramblewood Family Night. Students, staff, and families enjoyed purchasing books, singing holiday songs, and listening to stories read by various guest readers—including Santa! A special thank you to Mr. Brown, Math Coach, and Mrs. Feurtado, Literacy Coach, for coordinating this

wonderful event with the store. We also thank Larry’s Ice Cream, in partnership with our PTO, for hosting an additional family night. We are grateful to both businesses for supporting the Ram Family’s mission.

To culminate our December events, our school chorus performed at Taravella High School’s holiday show. Once again, Mr. Wexler, our music teacher, prepared the students to perform at an exceptional level.

We are elated to report that our students are ahead of where they were at this time last school year based on assessment results. We thank our parents and staff for working with and motivating our students to exceed expectations daily. We will continue striving to be an “A” school again this year.

PARKLAND LIBRARY STORYTIME CLASSES

Please visit www.cityofparkland.org/library for story time class schedules and registration dates. Your Parkland Library card is required in order to register. Registration is limited to one class per child.

• BOOKS AND BABIES: (9–23 months with adult). This is an early literacy class that creates sound and print awareness and their relationship through the use of toys, puzzles and books.

• TODDLER TALES STORYTIME: (24 months–3 ½ yrs, child must be accompanied by an adult). This early literacy class establishes the relationship between letters and sounds, sign identification, and provides early phonemic awareness. This is accomplished through stories, music, rhymes, and games.

• PRESCHOOL STORYTIME: (3–5-years old unaccompanied by adult). In this class, preschool age children will enhance phonemics, direction, verbal and written cues, motor skills and literacy links through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel boards and crafts. New themes are presented each week.
