s your Education Officer, I’m proud to share the continued efforts and initiatives that are helping to strengthen the bond between our city and its schools. Principal Appreciation: National School Principals’ Day, observed annually on May 1, celebrates the vital role principals play in shaping education. It was a special opportunity to recognize their leadership, commitment, and the impact they have on students, staff, and the entire school community. To express our appreciation, the city invited each principal to visit our photo studio for a headshot for their personal or professional use. We also created a “Thank You” reel to showcase our principals, which was aired on city social media and celebrated with the community on May 1. Teacher Appreciation: Teacher Appreciation Week, celebrated May 5–9, is a meaningful time to recognize the incredible dedication and lasting impact of our educators. As a former educator myself, I understand just how important it is to feel valued, both in the classroom and beyond. This marked the second year the City of Coral Springs, in collaboration with our local business community, came together to honor this special week. Throughout the week, many local businesses offered exclusive discounts and promotions for teachers as a heartfelt thank you for their hard work and commitment to our students. Watching our community unite in support of our educators is a true reflection of the Coral Springs spirit, coming together to uplift and celebrate those who shape the future every single day. Youth Ambassador Program: We are excited to kick off the second year of our Youth Ambassador Program! This initiative provides high school students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, serve their community, and represent the voices

of their peers. New this year, participants also have the chance to travel with our elected officials to national conferences. It’s a powerful way to get involved and make an impact! Applications for participating students will be accepted through June 23, 2025. Interested students must complete an application, submit an essay and a letter of recommendation, and participate in an in-person interview. Coral Springs was proud to host a variety of engaging events designed just for them, including Global Youth Service Day, which brought teens and seniors together in service; Wacky Olympics, where local middle schoolers enjoyed a night of friendly competition; the Pixel Spot Pop-Up, which energized the gathering space along Sportsplex Drive; and the Teen Political Forum, where teens had the opportunity to engage directly with elected officials and make their voices heard. Celebrating Exceptionalities: Thank you to our amazing educators, students, families, and community partners for your continued support of our inclusion programs and activities. Throughout April, the City of Coral Springs proudly celebrated Autism Awareness Month with a series of events designed to foster inclusivity and strengthen our community bonds. Highlights included Touch-A-Truck, a sensory-friendly experience for individuals with special needs; the Sensory Walk, promoting relaxation, mindfulness, and connection; and the Boogie Down Dance, where everyone could let loose and enjoy a fun, safe environment. Dear Readers, As the school year winds down, I hope your children had a great year of learning, fun, friendship, and new adventures. I would like to thank all the teachers, volunteers, principals and staff for creating a wonderful, safe and educational environment for our students. Your hard work is truly appreciated. I also want to congratulate all of our All-Star students who made academic, service, musical, theatrical and athletic gains this year. We are so proud of all your achievements and can’t wait to see what you do next. This issue focuses on an incredible assortment of awesome Summer Camps. You will find both weekly camps and day camps. Camp is a great way to have your child try something new, whether it’s a sport or an activity. We have camps for fishing, acting, dance, karate, chess, swimming, soccer, tennis and many more. There’s something for everyone! Summer camp provides a great way to create fun memories and make new friends, while keeping children’s minds, bodies, and spirits active. Dear Parkland Residents, As I look back over the past several months, I am inspired by our City’s progress. When I think about how hard we work, how much we care for each other, and how determined we are to get things done in our personal and professional lives, it always comes back to a foundation C oral Spr ing s & Par k la nd S por ts & Act iv it ie s D i r e ct o r y | I s s u e 44 | Ma y - Mi d Au gu st 2025

that rests on the strength of our community.

As a community, we are not only collaborating and working together, but also thriving together, and I believe our work should be celebrated in person. The City of Parkland City Commissioners and I will deliver the State of the City at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. on May 14, at 6600 University Drive, 33067. During State of the City 2025, we will share a high-level overview of the many initiatives that are completed, in process, and scheduled to begin – all in an elegant evening setting. Concepts for the Village in the Park, which will be in a portion of the former Heron Bay Golf Course, are in the works, the Loxahatchee Road redesign is well underway, and soon, we will begin work on our new Wedge Preserve Park, which will be the first of its kind in Parkland. In addition to all of that, large-scale drainage improvements are currently taking place in residential areas throughout the City. As Mayor and as a Parkland resident, I am proud of this purposeful work that will positively impact our life experiences for years to come. Consider making plans to hear more about our next chapter together. You will hear the latest in Parkland’s story, and you will have an opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A portion of our program. We hope you will join us, as we will include visual references and opportunities to speak with City commissioners in an informal setting, as well as give residents a better understanding of the scope of the exciting things happening in our community. Dear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses,

I hope this school year has treated you and your family well. I am not sure if you know it, but the City has established an Education Liaison, April Wyche. April has been a gift to the City and has helped us strengthen ties with each school in the Community. If you are interested in meeting her and attending a Parent Education committee meeting, please text me at 954-494-9872 and I will connect you. The City recently recognized the Coral Springs Youth Soccer Directors and student volunteers for their exceptional service to our Community. I coached my son, AJ for many years and have coached my grandson, Aiden, for 7 of the last 8 years. They have a tough job, but they are dedicated to the well-being and growth of our youth and I just want to say thanks! As you may recall, I have led a mentoring program since 2003 called Project Leadership.. It’s a free program for middle and high school students to learn leadership, communication and stress management skills, amongst others. Our next program is in May and then we begin planning for the Fall session. If you have a high school student who needs service hours, please call me at 954-494-9872. We pause. We breathe. And we ask the right questions.

Because during periods of uncertainty, the most constructive thing you can do is step back, refocus, and regain perspective. Market swings are never comfortable. In early April alone, the S&P 500 dropped more than 10% in two days, rebounded nearly as much, then fell again. It’s natural to feel unsettled and tempted to act. But decisions made in a state of panic are rarely the right ones. Instead of reacting impulsively, consider these four key questions. They can bring clarity, calm, and confidence—regardless of what the headlines suggest.

1. What do I own—and why do I own it?

Start with a clear understanding of your portfolio. How much do you have in U.S. stocks? International investments? Bonds? Cash? If you’re working with a financial advisor, this is a good time to review your allocations. If you’re managing things on your own, take

a fresh look. Knowing what you hold—and why—makes it much easier to make informed, intentional decisions.

2. Why did I invest in stocks in the first place?

Most likely, it wasn’t because you believed every government policy would go according to plan. You invested to participate in long-term economic growth and to build financial security over time. That rationale doesn’t disappear during moments of volatility. Keeping a long-term perspective is essential to weathering temporary disruptions.

3. What has truly changed?

While policy uncertainty can shake market confidence, it doesn’t necessarily warrant a change in your investment approach. Markets, economies, and people are incredibly resilient. If your financial goals and time horizon remain the same, your overall strategy may still be appropriate. However, if you’re approaching retirement or have new income needs, you may want to gradually shift toward more stable, income-generating investments—such as inflation-protected bonds.

4. If I didn’t already own this, would I buy it today?

This question helps counter what behavioral economists call “anchoring”—our tendency to judge investments based on recent highs or lows. Instead, evaluate each holding based on its current value and its future potential, not what it used to be worth. If the investment still aligns with your goals, it may make sense to hold it—even if it has declined. The train may feel off course right now, but that doesn’t mean you need to leap off. Stepping back, asking the right questions, and staying grounded in your long-term plan can help you move forward with greater clarity—and confidence.

ecent market volatility brought to mind a recurring dream I used to have. In it, I was on a train, gliding along a route I knew well. Everything was orderly—until it wasn’t. Without warning, the conductor’s voice dissolved into static. The signals along the tracks began flashing contradictory messages—green and red at the same time, signs pointing in opposite directions. The train jolted, passengers grew anxious, and no one knew whether to stop, continue, or brace for impact. That’s when I’d wake up. Lately, that dream doesn’t feel far from reality. Conflicting policy signals—especially surrounding tariffs—have left markets swinging sharply in both directions. Stocks rally one day and fall the next. Bond prices wobble. For investors, this kind of turbulence can be disorienting.

s a mother raising my children here in Broward County, I understand the importance of keeping our streets safe for everyone—especially our kids. Bicycles and electric bikes have become a popular way for people of all ages to get around, but with this growing trend comes the need for awareness and responsibility. One of the biggest concerns we’re seeing is the confusion between electric bicycles and electric motorcycles. Let’s be clear: electric bicycles are legal and must follow Florida’s bicycle laws, but electric motorcycles—those that can exceed 28 mph or 750 watts—are not electric bikes. They are illegal on public roads and sidewalks. These vehicles pose a serious risk to riders, pedestrians, and other motorists. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District, our deputies are working hard to ensure the safety of our community. We are:

Educating riders on Florida bicycle laws Conducting safety presentations at schools and community events Enforcing traffic laws to keep our streets safe for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers

We all play a role in safety. Whether you’re a parent, a student, or an avid cyclist, understanding and following bicycle laws is crucial. Here are a few important Florida bicycle safety rules:

Bicyclists under 16 must wear a helmet. It’s the law!

Bicycles must have a white front light and a red rear light when riding at night. Cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic signals. Electric bikes must follow the same rules as traditional bicycles. Our goal is to keep Parkland a safe place for families to enjoy outdoor activities. CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Our target age group is 5-22 years old. ummer break can be a welcome pause from the demands of the school year, but for children with deficits in learning or behavioral difficulties, the lack of structure and academic support can widen existing gaps. With the right strategies and support summer can become a valuable time for growth, self-regulation, and confidence-building. MAINTAIN A ROUTINE - Summer should feel relaxed and provide opportunity for ….fun! Children with learning or behavioral challenges often benefit from predictable schedules. Create a daily routine that includes consistent wake-up times, meal schedules, playtime, and bedtime. This can help reduce anxiety and behavioral outbursts. Incorporating structured activities, (even if short and fun), will keep your child engaged and help duplicate the structure of the school year. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES should be included in day to day activity. For children with learning difficulties, summer offers a chance to reinforce academic skills without the pressure of grades. Reading together daily, using educational games, or incorporating math into real-life activities like cooking or budgeting for a family outing can keep skills sharp. If a child struggles significantly, add the help of a tutor, an educational specialist or enrolling in a summer program tailored to their needs. Lastly, if there are concerns about diagnosable academic difficulties, reach out to a psychologist’s office to inquire about an evaluation. Behaviorally, summer is an ideal time to work on EMOTIONAL

REGULATION and SOCIAL SKILLS. Without the stress of academic performance, children may be more open to practicing coping techniques and engaging in guided social situations. Activities like team sports, art classes, or cooperative games can provide opportunities for growth in a low-stakes environment. For children with more significant behavioral needs, parent-led behavior plans can be effective. These can include goal-setting with small rewards for positive behaviors, consistent consequences for misbehavior, and daily check-ins to reflect on progress. These should be provided by a Child Psychologist or licensed child mental health professional.

he past few months have been very busy at Riverglades. Our students have been enjoying enrichment programs including Cheerleading, Musical Theater, Dance, Chess, Coding and more. The Riverglades Debate Team worked very hard throughout the school year and competed in several competitions, scoring some big wins and great experiences. Our gardening initiative with lessons from Farmer Jay, has continued growing this year. In April, Riverglades students held a very successful Kid’s Heart Challenge to raise money for the American Heart Association. In fact, our Gators were the #1 fundraiser out of all public schools in the entire state of Florida. Students celebrated this success by “Sliming” our principal- Mrs Seltzer, vice-principal – Mr Duhart and Coach Natke. Riverglades also had our Spring book fair, Spring pictures, and our biggest event of the year, Creative Arts Night. Riverglades families also had the opportunity to attend a Florida Panthers game as they work to defend their Stanley Cup win last season! amblewood Middle School is buzzing with excitement this quarter, as students continue to shine in a wide range of extracurricular activities and athletics. The Raider Fair, a much-anticipated community event, offered an evening filled with entertainment, including axe throwing, bounce houses, obstacle courses, and a variety of delicious food options. The event brought students, families, and staff together, creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere that celebrated the spirit of the school. Athletics have been thriving as well, with the track and field team preparing for their upcoming meets. The track athletes have been putting in the work, and the competition ahead promises to be an exciting showcase of their dedication and skill. The Raider spirit continues to shine brightly, with students working hard to represent their school with pride and excellence in every event. Meanwhile, the Bullseye Debate Team has wrapped up a successful season, capping off their hard work at a recent competition. Looking ahead, the team will be heading into the Broward County Debate Championships, where they will continue to showcase the skills they’ve developed throughout the year. The school’s commitment

Challenge tracks energy use in schools across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. Forest Hills Elementary lowered its energy use by 14% this year, saving 47,901 kilowatt-hours. That means the school avoided about $4,790 in costs. Central Park Elementary in Plantation took first place in energy savings, cutting its power use by 35% from the year before. That saved the school nearly $18,800. Cooper City High School placed third by cutting 12%, resulting in more than $18,300 in savings.

Coconut Creek Elementary won the water category by using 63% less water. “This competition empowers students to see firsthand the impact they can make toward environmental sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint,” Superintendent Howard Hepburn said in a press release. “They are learning that they have the power to create real, positive change by reducing waste and building a more sustainable future for all.” Students from all four schools were honored at the Miami Heat game on April 13. s we enter the final quarter of the 2024-2025 school year, we reflect with excitement on the many accomplishments and moments of joy our Ram Families have experienced. We hope everyone enjoyed a fun-filled Spring Break. We’re thrilled to share some highlights from a very eventful third quarter. We kicked off the quarter by welcoming our future kindergarteners during our annual Kindergarten Round-Up. To accommodate all families, we hosted both morning and evening sessions. These young scholars had the opportunity to tour the campus, visit the “K” building, and engage with some of our dedicated kindergarten teachers. The parents attended an informative session with our administration and clerical staff to learn more about our school’s protocols, procedures, and what to expect in the coming school year. It was a heartwarming experience that set a strong foundation for our newest Rams. Our Black History Showcase was a festive event, celebrating culture, history, and student talent. For two months, members of our dedicated staff worked diligently with students twice a week to prepare for this important performance. The event itself was an enormous success, with a standing-room-only crowd cheering on our talented performers. The energy, pride, and applause that filled the room were truly unforgettable. Our 4th and 5th grade students had the chance to make lasting memories during their out-of-county field trips. The 4th graders visited SeaWorld, while the 5th graders explored Animal Kingdom. Both groups enjoyed thrilling rides, indulged in tasty meals, and

had a blast shopping for souvenirs. The trips were both educational and exciting, providing students with experiences that will stay with them for years to come. Another major highlight was our Scholastic Book Fair. Held during students’ Media elective classes, it gave them a chance to browse and purchase books and other items. We also hosted a special Family Night, and the Media Center was bustling with enthusiastic parents, students, and staff all enjoying the joy of reading together. It was fantastic to see such strong community engagement. As we approach the end-of-year assessments, our focus has turned toward academic achievement and preparation. Our teachers, support staff, and administration are all working extremely hard to help students master grade-level standards. Small group instruction during the school day and afterschool academic camps are in full swing. We’re also incredibly grateful to our parents, who have been instrumental in supporting their children’s learning at home, particularly with our web-based educational programs. Together, we are working toward one goal—raising our school grade and celebrating academic growth.
