Dear Readers,
Welcome Spring! What a lovely time of year it is to live in Central Broward. Once the clocks spring ahead, the evenings will be longer making it the perfect time for playing sports, attending events, and enjoying outdoor activities in the fresh air.
Our cities have some great events lined up this spring. Come out to the 89th Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo in Davie over the weekend of February 27-March 1. On Saturday, March 14, the City of Cooper City is hosting Founder’s Day, an annual day-long event, beginning with a parade, an afternoon of family-fun activities at Brian Picolo Park, that ends with an evening of fireworks! The City of Plantation has a host of events lined up from the monthly Rock the Park concert series & Movies in the Park. On March 14, the Family Bike Ride & Scavenger Hunt takes place, followed by Touch-a-Truck on March 21, and a Community Garage Sale on March 28. On April 18, the city celebrates Earth Day and Relay for Life. Of course, there will be Egg Hunts, too, (in all cities) so be sure to turn to our Calendar of Events in the Around Town section for locations and times and to check out all the fun!
It’s a new season for sports, and registrations are happening now. You can find them all in the Main Directory in the red-tabbed section. Spring break is the week of March 16-20, beginning on Friday, March 13 for Broward County Public Schools. Be sure to page through our Main & Camp Directories to find some great options to keep your kids engaged.
It may seem early, but February and March are the perfect times to explore and register for Summer Camp 2026. We have a special, purple-tabbed section featuring Summer Camp in this issue that’s full of fun, sports, enrichment & educational programs for children of all ages. From monthly camp sessions to weekly camps or even day camps, there are plenty of options to choose from. We’re confident you’ll find the perfect fit! Maybe your child would like learn horseback riding, basketball, soccer, volleyball, acting/theatre, art, robotics, languages, academics, or learn to play a musical instrument this summer. Whatever you choose, we have them all covered. I’m confident you’ll find the perfect fit.
Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients. Be sure to tell our advertisers you found them in Sports & Activities Directory.
Wishing you a happy, healthy spring!
My Best to you!

Dear Cooper City Residents,
I hope 2026 is off to a positive and healthy start for you and your family. The coming months bring a renewed sense of energy across our community, along with many opportunities to come together, celebrate, and enjoy all that Cooper City has to offer.
As we look ahead, spring in Cooper City brings with it some of our most anticipated community traditions, led by the return of Founder’s Day. This year’s celebration will take place on Saturday, March 14 and will feature an exciting new theme, “Americana Fest.” As the United States commemorates 250 years since its founding, it is only fitting that “Someplace Special” pays tribute to the history, spirit, and pride of our great country.
Founder’s Day will once again begin with a one-mile run and a parade along SW 90th Avenue, followed by a full afternoon of activities designed for all ages. The celebration will conclude with an evening concert and fireworks show at Brian Piccolo County Park. Our Parks and Recreation team is preparing a full schedule of themed events and entertainment, and I look forward to celebrating this special day alongside our residents and visitors. I encourage you to visit www.CooperCity.gov/ Calendar and follow the City’s social media channels for the latest details and updates. Later in the spring, Flamingo West Park will once again be the site of our annual Egg-Stravaganza. This event has long been a favorite opportunity for families, friends, and neighbors to enjoy time together in one of our beautiful parks. As event details are finalized, I encourage residents to visit www.CooperCity.gov/SpecialEvents for the most up-to-date information.
The spring season is also a time to reflect on continued investments that enhance the quality of life in Cooper City. The new and incredible playground at Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex is already being enjoyed by many children and families. The City Commission remains committed to funding additional playground replacements throughout the community, including upcoming improvements at Ellie Kozak Park, ensuring safe and engaging spaces for our youngest residents.
In addition to our special events, Cooper City offers a wide variety of programs throughout the year for residents of all ages. For our youth, tennis, gymnastics, karate, and dance classes provide opportunities to learn new skills, stay active, and build confidence. For active adults, we are excited to offer “Sticks and Flow” Fitness, a new high-energy workout that blends upbeat music with cardio-driven routines, complimenting dozens of other activities and programs offered by our Parks and Recreation Department. Thanks to the support of Baptist Health, this “Sticks and Flow” is offered free of charge at the Pool and Tennis Center on Mondays from 5:00PM- 6:00PM, excluding holidays. There is no shortage of opportunities to stay engaged in the months ahead. Please mark your calendars for the Bike Rodeo, Safety and Health Fair on Saturday, February 28; Founder’s Day on March 14; Egg-Stravaganza on March 26; the Spring Garage Sale on April 11; Eat to the Beat on April 17; and our Autism Awareness Event on April 25. These are just a few of the many wonderful happenings taking place in Cooper City, and I invite you to be a part of it all. I also encourage you to stay involved and share your thoughts and ideas by attending City Commission meetings.
As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns by calling (954) 434-4300 and pressing option #6.
Sincerely,
James Curran Mayor of Cooper City
Hello Davie Residents,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed a happy and healthy holiday season spent with family, friends, and neighbors. As we step into 2026, there’s a special excitement in the air. We have so many wonderful programs and events planned to honor our history and the people who make Davie such a special place to call home. One of the traditions that truly defines our community is right around the corner, the 89th Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade, and Rodeo. The celebration officially kicks off on Friday, February 27, with a Concert in the Park from 6:00PM-9:00PM. This fun-filled evening is perfect for the whole family, featuring live music, arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities, and plenty of food and beverages for purchase. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs, relax under the stars, and enjoy a great night with friends and neighbors. The excitement continues Saturday morning, February 28, with the parade stepping off promptly at 10:00AM inside the Bamford Sports Complex. Be sure to arrive early to grab a good spot along the parade route, it’s always a crowd favorite. Once the parade wraps up, the festival grounds at Pine Island Park and Bamford Sports Complex will open, offering a full day of fun which also continues Sunday, March 1. This year’s festivities include arts and crafts vendors, food, live entertainment, Cowboy Town with a petting farm and western carriage display, a farmers’ market, and informative exhibits. Children of all ages will love Kids Korner, filled with rides and activities. For those with a sweet tooth, don’t miss the Davie Woman’s Club’s annual Strawberry Festival, featuring what is always a crowd favorite, strawberry shortcake. To top off the weekend, the Weekly Brothers will once again present the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo, taking place Saturday night at 7:30PM and Sunday afternoon at 2:00PM. I can’t wait to see everyone in Cowboy Town as we celebrate our community with one of my favorite Davie annual events.
The fun doesn’t stop there. Throughout the year, the Town of Davie offers a wide variety of events for residents and visitors to enjoy. Join us on Friday, March 13, and Friday, April 17, from 6:00PM-9:00PM at Pine Island Park and Bamford Sports Complex for the popular Sounds of the Town Concert Series, featuring local bands. It’s a great way to unwind, enjoy live music, and connect with the community. Another family favorite, the Hippity-Hoppity Egg Hunt, will take place on Saturday, April 4, from 9:00AM-12:00PM at Pine Island Park and Bamford Sports Complex. Admission is free for Davie residents and includes an egg hunt for children aged 0 to 11, divided by age group, with special prizes hidden inside secret eggs. Families can also enjoy inflatable rides, a petting farm, train rides, a DJ dance party, and bunny ears for the kids. Additional activities, such as face painting, arts and crafts vendors, photos with Peter Cottontail, and food trucks will have food and drinks available for purchase, so don’t forget your baskets and cameras. We’ll also come together to celebrate music at the annual Davie Jazz Festival on April 11, at the Davie Arena. Music begins at 6:00PM and features both local and international artists, highlighting the positive influence jazz has had on South Florida. Tickets are available through the Town of Davie website, and we invite everyone to join us for an unforgettable evening.
Participation in recreational programs and activities provides many health benefits to Davie’s youth, adults, and seniors. Whether it’s swim lessons, fitness, youth sports, senior activities, special events, or recreational classes that interest you and your family, the Town of Davie has something for everyone to enjoy. As you browse through the Sports and Activities Directory, keep a lookout, as all the programs provided by the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department begin with “Davie”. For more information on any Town of Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941.
As always, see you at the parks, and remember to “Like” us on Facebook.
Sincerely,
Judy Paul

Greetings Plantation Residents,
Spring has sprung in the City of Plantation! The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and I am writing this before the humidity decides to make its grand return. We have a jam-packed schedule over the next few months designed to get you outside, moving, and perhaps finding that vintage lamp you didn’t know you needed. We are kicking things off musically with our Rock the Park concert series. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Febuary. 7; Saturday, March 7 and Friday, April 3. If you haven't been yet, you are missing out on great fun. February is for the arts (and aliens). Our Art Search contest wraps up on February 13, so get those entries in! Then, grab a blanket and join us for Movies in the Park on Friday, February 20 for a showing of the new Lilo & Stitch. Popcorn is optional, but highly encouraged.
March is where things get moving. On Saturday, March 14, bring the whole crew for our Family Bike Ride & Scavenger Hunt. The following week, on Saturday, March 21, it’s time for Touch-A-Truck. This is the one day of the year we actually encourage loud honking, so bring the little ones and let them make some noise (with a quiet hour from 9:00AM-10:00AM). We’ll close out the month with our Community Garage Sale on Saturday, March 28. It’s the perfect opportunity to declutter your home—or, let's be honest, fill it back up with treasures from your neighbors.
April brings our most time-sensitive event of the year: the Royal Egg Hunt at Pop Travers Park on Saturday, April 4. Please note, the hunt begins at 10:00AM. Recover from the egg-hunting frenzy the next day at our Easter Brunch at the Plantation Preserve on Sunday, April 5.
For our active agers, our Seniors will be taking a road trip to the Delray Affair on Friday, April 10. Finally, we’ll wrap up the mid-spring festivities on Saturday, April 18 with a dual celebration: Relay for Life and our Earth Day celebration. It’s a day to support a great cause and celebrate our planet simultaneously.
As always, you can stay up to date by visiting Plantation.org. Let’s get out there and make some memories before the summer heat catches up to us!
Warm regards,
Mayor Nick Sortal Mayor of Plantation

Parents are always searching for ways to engage their children, providing them with the tools they need to grow, learn and navigate their ever-changing world. Parents are protectors, cheerleaders and counselors and walk beside them through every challenge both the expected and unexpected.
When unexpected changes arise, it can feel overwhelming for both a parent and child. A diagnosis involving a child’s vision can bring fear, uncertainty and countless questions for the short term and the long term. Yet families are not alone. An estimated 625,000 children in the United States live with blindness or visual impairment and through specialized education, rehabilitation, life-skills training and family-centered support, they enjoy independence, confidence and dignity at every stage of their life.
For more than 50 years, Lighthouse of Broward has served as a trusted local resource for children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. As the only private nonprofit organization in Broward County offering comprehensive services for children and adults with vision loss, Lighthouse of Broward has become a guiding light for families navigating this journey.
Through its youth-focused programs of Bright Beginnings, the David and Jean Colker KIDS Program and TeenLIFE, families can feel confident that their children are supported by experts who understand both the mechanical and emotional aspects of vision loss.
The Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program serves children, from birth through age five, and their families and focuses on the earliest and most critical stages of development. Because many early milestones are typically learned through visual interaction, the program equips parents and caregivers with tools to nurture learning in
new ways. Children explore assistive technology, build social and sensory skills and develop curiosity about their surroundings while families become empowered partners in laying the foundation for lifelong growth.
For children ages six to 13, the David and Jean Colker KIDS Program offers year-round enrichment that supports daily living skills, social connection and self-confidence. Children participate in STEAM-based activities, practice safe travel and strengthen independence in a structured, encouraging environment. Many families share that the program not only builds their child’s abilities but also gives them greater confidence to advocate for their needs.
TeenLIFE serves youth ages 14 to 21, a stage when independence becomes especially important. Through a combination of group experiences and individualized instruction, teens develop life and career-readiness skills while gaining confidence to pursue academic, professional and personal goals.
Beyond educational programming, Lighthouse of Broward also offers Family Support Group services within each youth program to nurture the emotional well-being of both children and families. Through gatherings such as a Back-to-School Bash, National Blind Sports Day and other events, families are given meaningful opportunities to connect, share experiences and build practical strategies for navigating life with vision loss together.
A child’s diagnosis may change the path a family imagined, but it does not change the promise of what that child can become. With the right guidance, encouragement and community, children with vision loss can grow into confident young adults who navigate the world with resilience and pride. For Broward families, Lighthouse of Broward offers more than services, in a world of darkness, it brings light, so no family walks this journey alone.
When people think about anxiety, they usually imagine fear, worry, or panic attacks. In reality, anxiety often shows up in much subtler ways. It can look like laziness, defiance, lack of motivation, or poor attitude, leading adults to respond in ways that increase pressure rather than provide support. Over time, this can affect a child’s confidence, relationships, and willingness to engage in activities. Recognizing the quieter signs of anxiety are instrumental to helping children develop healthier coping skills.
Children’s varied responses to anxiety are a result of differences between each child’s nervous system, temperament, and past experiences. Some children are naturally more sensitive to stress. Developmental factors, coping skills, and how a child has learned to manage stress all play a role. Anxiety may lead one child to withdraw and shut down, while another becomes perfectionistic, irritable, or behaviorally reactive. These responses are not choices. They are learned ways the body and brain attempt to regain a sense of safety.
One common but overlooked presentation of anxiety is shutdown. Children may withdraw, become unusually quiet, or disengage from activities they typically enjoy. At home, this might look like retreating to their room or avoiding conversations. In school, it can appear as lack of participation. Another frequent sign of anxiety is perfectionism. Anxious children may place intense pressure on themselves to perform well and may struggle to tolerate mistakes. They might redo tasks repeatedly, become frustrated when things are not “just right,” or avoid trying new activities out of fear of failure. While these children are often highly capable, the internal pressure they experience can lead to emotional exhaustion and avoidance. Anxiety can also show up through behavioral reactions. Irritability, emotional outbursts, refusal to participate, or frequent
complaints of physical discomfort (like headaches or stomachaches) can all be expressions of anxiety.
Adults should focus on consistency, emotional safety, and connection is key! Some practical ways to help include:
1. Keeping predictable routines, clear expectations (even between school and home), and advance preparation for transitions can help reduce uncertainty.
2. Breaking tasks or activities into smaller, manageable steps can prevent children from feeling overwhelmed before they begin.
3. Encouraging effort over outcome and normalizing mistakes can ease pressure for children who struggle with perfectionism. Simple reminders that mistakes are part of learning can reduce fear and avoidance.
4. Of fering appropriate choices can also help children feel a greater sense of control.
5. For children who shut down, gentle check-ins and extra time to respond are often more effective than repeated prompts or pressure.
6. Most importantly, remaining calm and listening without immediately correcting or dismissing a child’s feelings can help them feel understood and supported. Remember that growth happens gradually. When anxiety begins to interfere with daily life, seeking guidance from a mental health professional can provide children and families with effective tools for managing stress. With understanding and support, children can learn to manage their anxiety and engage more fully in the world around them. M
irror Lake Elementary Magnet School recently welcomed hundreds of enthusiastic students, families, teachers, and community partners to its annual STEAM Night, an evening dedicated to hands-on exploration in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The event, a favorite at Mirror Lake, showcased the school’s commitment to inquiry-based learning, creativity, and career-connected experiences that define its magnet program.
Families rotated through interactive stations, each designed to provide meaningful, real-world learning experiences. One of the biggest hits of the evening was the Winter Wonderland Snow-Making Station, where students created “instant snow” and learned about chemical reactions and states of matter. Just a few steps away, the Dash-Driving Robots station invited children to practice basic coding and problem-solving as they maneuvered robots through fun challenges.
Nature lovers enjoyed the Plant Life Station, where every child selected a plant seedling to take home. Volunteers guided students through discussions on plant life cycles, soil, sunlight, and sustainability. At the Watercolor Dip Art Station, students explored color theory and artistic expression as they created one-of-a-kind marbled artwork to display proudly at home.
Plantation High School’s Engineering Program joined the evening with a standout aviation-themed activity. High school students assisted children in building glider planes and measuring flight distances, introducing younger learners to aerodynamics and the engineering design process. The school community also enjoyed a fully interactive Magnetics Exploration Area, filled with stations demonstrating magnetic forces, attraction, repulsion, and real-world uses for magnets.
Another crowd favorite was the Earthquake Simulation Station, where students experimented with building structures and testing their stability on a mini shake
table. The Bubble Station provided a playful way to explore surface tension and shapes, while the STEAM Boats Station allowed families to design small boats and test buoyancy and propulsion.
Families also participated in an important initiative—the Turkey Trot Fundraiser, which aims to raise money for a much-needed basketball court covering. At this station, parents created their child’s fundraising webpage, made donations, and purchased Turkey Trot T-shirts. The school’s PTO also played a big role in the night’s success, offering pizza, drinks, and snacks to keep families energized as they rotated through activities.
To encourage full participation, students received a STEAM Passport and collected a stamp at each station. Once complete, families turned in their stamped passports to receive a special prize.
This year’s STEAM Night also served as an opportunity to introduce Mirror Lake’s new Acting Principal, Mrs. MiMi Jensen. Mrs. Jensen warmly greeted families, shared her educational and personal background, and answered questions about her vision for Mirror Lake. Her enthusiasm, approachability, and dedication to student success left a strong impression on families, who expressed excitement about welcoming her into the MLE community.
Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School continues to shine as a hub of innovation, collaboration, and joyful learning. This year’s STEAM Night perfectly showcased the school’s mission: inspiring students to explore, create, and discover through engaging, hands-on experiences. At Super Aqua Swim School, swimming isn’t just a class — it’s a journey that becomes part of a child’s world. Nestled in the heart of Weston, FL, our school was built with families in mind: a safe indoor pool, warm water all year round, and a team that truly gets kids.
What Makes Us…Us: When you walk into Super Aqua, you’ll notice right away it’s a place built for kids — and run by people who genuinely love what they do. Classes are designed around how children develop, with lessons planned according to age and ability. That means every child is placed where they’ll feel comfortable and challenged, not lost, not rushed.
Our approach blends technique with creativity. We use games, songs, and playful activities so learning feels like fun, not work. This helps kids relax in the water, build confidence, and actually enjoy the process of learning a life-long skill.
A Place That Feels Like Home: Because our pool is indoors, heated to 90°F, and air-conditioned, lessons happen no matter the weather, which means routines stay consistent and kids progress steadily. Parents can watch through big glass windows, catch up on messages in our comfy viewing area, or just take a breath knowing their child is safe and engaged.
Safety and comfort aren’t just features, they’re foundations here. We use advanced water filtration, UV/salt sanitation systems, and maintain a familyfriendly space where kids feel secure and parents feel informed.
Learning Step by Step: Super Aqua’s lessons are organized into thoughtful levels that help kids grow in the water from first comfort to true swimming technique. From the first moments of feeling safe in the pool to learning strokes like freestyle and backstroke, everything is built around gradual growth and real milestones.
A Team That Cares: The school is run by Guilherme and Samara — a husband-and-wife team who are not just owners, but educators and instructors themselves. They’ve spent years building the way Super Aqua teaches, always keeping communication open and honest with families.
A Place in Our Community: Families often tell us they see changes beyond the pool: kids who are braver, more focused, and proud of what they’ve learned. That’s exactly the kind of difference Super Aqua aims to make — one splash, one skill, one confident kid at a time.
Super Aqua Swim School isn’t just a place to learn how to swim, it’s part of our community, part of childhood memories, and a space where kids grow up in the water with confidence and joy.
A Message from the Founders: “When we created Super Aqua, our goal wasn’t to build the biggest swim school — it was to build the right one. A place where children feel respected, parents feel heard, and instructors are supported to do their best work.
Swimming is a life skill, and teaching it comes with a lot of responsibility. We treat every child as if they were our own, and we’re hands-on every day to make sure the quality of teaching and care stays exactly where it should be.
Seeing kids grow in confidence, overcome fears, and truly enjoy the water is what keeps us motivated. That’s what Super Aqua is about.”

Joe Vallone, Aerospace Instructor and Magnet Coordinator for Plantation High School’s new ACES Magnet Program, has helped launch multiple rockets and futures, guiding students towards STEM degrees and careers at organizations like NASA, Lockheed Martin, Blue Origin and Space X over his 28 year-long career. It’s no wonder that Mr. Vallone holds multiple nominations for Life Changer of the Year, a national award honoring educators who make lasting, positive impacts on students’ lives.
“Plantation’s schools are blessed with all kinds of outstanding teachers”, said Mayor Nick Sortal. “We are delighted that one of them was at the front of our holiday parade this past year”. Under Mr. Vallone’s leadership, what began in 2003 as a small after-school club of just fifteen students has grown into a comprehensive four-year Aerospace & Engineering program, where students explore space, history, engineering management, digital electronics, design and high-powered rocketry. He then built on the program’s success to create Plantation High’s new ACES Magnet program (Achieving Career Equity for Students), which connects career and technical education pathways across campus, including aerospace engineering, 3D gaming design, fashion design, e-commerce, entrepreneurship, computer programming and building trades.
“My students started doing rockets in a physics classroom” Vallone reflected. “We were wildly successful, and it turned into a four-year aerospace engineering program. Now, we’re using that same model to build the next generation of magnet pathways that prepare students for real-world success.” As Grand Marshal, Joe Vallone led The City of Plantation’s community HOLIDAY parade with the same enthusiasm, creativity and forward-thinking energy he brings to his students every day, reminding us all that curiosity, collaboration and opportunity can make dreams take flight. The City of Plantation’s annual holiday parade took place on November 22, 2025.
