HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.
ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is in his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.
GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is in his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

Dynamic Duo Strikers Kharlton Belmar and Nansel Selbol came off the bench together last week and each found the back of the net against Real Monarchs. The two would be put on Team of the Week in the USL for their game changing performance. Belmar continued his hot streak with a goal against Sacramento Republic FC on Wednesday.
Captain Clutch Swope Park Rangers captain Christian Duke had himself an amazing game against Sacramento Republic FC. Earning assists on both Rangers goals, Duke found himself causing problems for Sacramento attackers and defenders alike. The Captain continued to impress until the last minute making an amazing 30 yard run deep into stoppage time that almost led to a Rangers goal. Duke will continue to provide assists against Reno 1868 FC on Saturday.
Belmar’s Streak Swope Park Rangers forward Kharlton Belmar has been in amazing form these last 3 games. Scoring against Real Monarchs, Orange County, and Sacramento Republic. Belmar will certainly be happy with his recent form, he has now pushed his already team leading goal scoring record to 9. Belmar will look to find the back of the net against Reno 1868 FC on Saturday.
Shared Points The Swope Park Rangers and Sacramento Republic FC tied 2-2 on Wednesday in a late-night game in California. The Rangers took the lead twice but could not seem to put the game away. The Rangers opened the scoring in the 4th minute when Sporting KC striker Soony Saad put the ball into the back of the net with a vicious strike. Sacramento Republic FC would equalize in the 36th minute off of an excellent free kick that struck the bar and fell perfectly to a pouncing Wilson Kneeshaw. This goal marks the second game in a row the Rangers have given up a goal off a free kick. The Rangers would once again take the lead in the 68th minute through Kharlton Belmar. Swope Park captain Christian Duke played an excellent ball across the face of goal and the currently on fire Swope striker made no mistake with the chance. Sacramento would come back one last time and tie the game in the 88th minute off an excellent side volley from Tyler Blackwood. After the goal both teams had chances to steal all 3 points but none found the back of the net.

The Rematch The Rangers will come into their match with Reno 1868 FC with extra fire this week. The Rangers rarely give up a lot of goals as they are one of the best defensive teams in the league. Reno broke this trend last time the two teams met putting a beating on the Rangers 4-1. Swope Park will certainly come into this match trying to prove a point and get revenge for the last time these two clubs met.
Disappointing Draws With the draw against Sacramento Republic FC the Rangers have now tied in 4 straight matches. While the comeback against Real Monarchs FC felt like a point earned, ties against Orange County SC and Sacramento Republic have felt like points dropped as the Rangers held the lead in both those matches. The Rangers will look to get back to winning ways against Reno 1868 FC.
Soony’s Debut Sporting Kansas City striker Soony Saad made his first appearance for the Swope Park Rangers against Sacramento Republic FC. The experienced striker made an excellent impression, scoring the opening goal in the 4th minute and providing a constant scoring threat all night. Saad continues the streak of Sporting Kansas City strikers making an immediate impact on the Rangers. Earlier this year Diego Rubio started one game for the Rangers against the Tulsa Roughnecks, Rubio found the back of the net that game as well.
