HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.
ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is in his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.
GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is in his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

Belmar’s on Fire Swope Park Ranger forward Kharlton Belmar has caught fire in the closing portion of the season. With his goal against RGV he has now scored in 5 straight matches, his goal total has also increased to 14 which is a club record as well as a personal record for the Striker. The Rangers as a whole have been playing well to close the season but no player has been on firs quite like Kharlton Belmar. Belmar will look to score in his 6th straight game against OKC Energy FC on Sunday.
Third Place Rangers The Swope Park Rangers, San Antonio FC, and Reno 1868 FC are all sitting at 55 points in a three-way tie for second place. Reno owns the tie breaker over the Rangers and San Antonio currently has a game in hand. These three teams look to be inseparable as the season pushes to its conclusion. The Swope Park Rangers will look to win their last 2 matches to secure a home playoff match.
Possession Kings The Swope Park Rangers dominated possession against RGV winning the battle for the ball by holding the ball 64 percent of the time. Despite this the Rangers found themselves at an early deficit, which is one of the drawbacks of possession play, sometimes the team with the ball makes one bad pass and the other team can break on them. However, the Rangers kept their heads high and continued playing the Swope Park Rangers way, continuing to boss the game in possession, the Rangers were eventually shown their rewards with their 91st minute equalizer.
Rangers Comeback The Swope Park Rangers and Rio Grande Valley FC would play an incredibly exciting draw last Saturday. The hosting Rio Grande Valley would open the scoring in the 7th minute, after some deflections and a great pass Joseph Holland found himself one on one with Adrian Zendejas. The Swope Park Rangers keeper could do nothing to save the calmly placed shot, giving RGV the 1-0 lead. Rio Grande Valley would double their lead in the 63rd minute, after an over the top through ball was misread by the Swope Park defense Kyle Murphy would place his shot into the back of the net. The Rangers would find their footing in the match in the 75th minute through a RGV own goal. After some interplay between Parker Maher and Christian Duke, Duke would eventually head the ball across the mouth of goal, with Kharlton Belmar on his back shoulder RGV defender Kevin Garcia put the ball into the back of his own net. The Rangers would find their equalizer in stoppage time, after causing problems in the Rio Grande Valley defense all night Kharlton Belmar finally got his goal. Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal played a great through ball to Belmar which left him one on one with the keeper, after an amazing save by the RGV keeper Belmar headed the deflection into the back of the net.

Rangers Depth The Swope Park Rangers went on the road and earned a point in difficult circumstances without two of the teams most capped players. Both Amer Didic and James Musa were on the Sporting Kansas City gameday squad at the same time the Rangers battled with RGV. While their presence was certainly missed the Rangers proved they have the depth to compete no matter what and played one of the most exciting matches of the year.
Dependable Captain With his 90 minutes against RGV, Swope Park Rangers captain Christian Duke has now reached 2,700 minutes played this season. In other words, he has played every single minute for the Rangers this year. Having a leader who can always be on the field and contributing to the team is a priceless benefit for a relatively young team. On top of all his minute Duke also leads the club in assists this season. Duke will look to lead his team to victory against his former club in the OKC Energy FC on Sunday.
Battling a Legend Legendary Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen is the head coach of OKC Energy FC. Nielsen earned quite a reputation in Sporting folklore, being nicknamed the “white puma” for his white hair and cat like reflexes. Nielsen captained Sporting Kansas City to a MLS Cup championship in 2013. Current Swope Park Rangers assistant coach Paulo Nagamura was a teammate of Neilsen’s for years including on the 2013 championship team. Both these Sporting Kansas City legends will not want to give the other the edge against each other when these two teams meet on Sunday
