Sporting Kansas City returns home after a two-game road swing this weekend when the side hosts the Portland Timbers at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night. The two sides met once earlier this season, with Sporting snatching a point in a tightly-contested 0-0 draw at Providence Park on June 9. Daniel Salloi came closest for Sporting KC on the day when his volleyed attempt from a tight angle in the first half rattled the Timbers crossbar. MELIA GOES BACK-TO-BACK

Sporting Kansas City continued their good form this last weekend when the side defeated Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium to clinch their second consecutive victory, coming on the back of a five-game winless skid in MLS action. The current streak marks the first time Sporting KC has posted back-to-back victories in MLS play since early May, when the club beat the Colorado Rapids at home on May 5 before defeating Atlanta United FC on the road on May 9.

Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia continued his excellent form with his second consecutive clean sheet in the 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium on Saturday night. It’s Melia’s ninth shutout of the season - tied for first in MLS with New York City FC’s Sean Johnson - and just one shy of his career-high from 2017, when he was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. After conceding multiple goals in eight straight games in all competitions from mid June to late July, where the side went 2-5-1, Melia and Sporting KC have steadied the ship and kept one of the highest scoring teams at bay on Saturday night in LAFC.

Sporting KC has not posted consecutive victories on the road since the middle of the 2014 campaign, when the side picked up three points in trips to Montreal and Columbus on July 12 and 16, respectively, as part of a four-game winning streak that lasted from July 12-26. You only have to go a month further back for the last time Sporting KC had consecutive shutout wins on the road, as SKC picked up 2-0 and 1-0 wins over the Houston Dynamo and the Portland Timbers on June 6 and June 27, respectively, either side of the 2014 FIFA World Cup break.

In fact, Sporting KC has now claimed shutout wins on the road at three of the top four scoring teams in MLS this season: W 2-0 at LA Galaxy on April 8, W 2-0 at Atlanta United FC on May 9 and W 2-0 at LAFC on Aug. 11. Of the top four scoring teams, only the New York Red Bulls have managed to score and win against SKC in their home stadium this season.

The recent five-game winless skid was the longest Sporting KC has had since the tail end of the 2017 season to the start of the 2018 campaign, when the club went seven games without a win - including a MLS Cup Playoffs Knockout Round defeat at the Houston Dynamo - starting with a 1-0 defeat at home against Vancouver on September 30, 2017 and only coming to an end with Sporting claimed a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on March 10, 2018.

NEMO RE-DEBUTS

Sporting Kansas City striker Kirsztian Nemeth made a victorious return to the team this weekend, when he repalced Diego Rubio in the 76th minute and played the final 14 minutes of the 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium on Saturday night.

With six points taken from their lsat six available, Sporting KC remains firmly in the playoff hunt in the MLS Western Conference with 39 points - two ahead of Saturday’s opponents Portland for second in the Conference. Sporting also has the best goal difference in the Western Conference with +12, and has scored the third most goals in the West with 42 - only trailing the LA Galaxy’s 48 and LAFC’s 47.

Nemeth, 29, returned to Sporting KC last Monday, August 6 following a trade with the New England Revolution that saw cash and a 2020 MLS SuperDraft pick head up to Massachusetts. He had spent the 2015 season with Sporting KC, recording 16 goals and seven assists in 33 competitive matches for the club. The forward joined Al-Gharafa SC in Qatar in 2016 and has spent the last 12 months in MLS with New England.

Nemeth became the 10th player to enjoy two separate spells with Sporting KC, joining current teammate Roger Espinoza and eight others in accomplishing that feat. Espinoza played for Sporting KC from 2008-2012 before joining Wigan Athletic, then in the English Premier League, before returning to Kansas City ahead of the 2015 MLS season.

Sporting Kansas City is set to face off against the Portland Timbers for the second and final time in the MLS regular season on Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Park. In the one earlier meeting this season, Sporting KC grabbed a point from Providence Park following a 0-0 draw, with Daniel Salloi’s strike that caromed off the crossbar the closest either side came.

In his first stint with Sporting KC, Nemeth was named the club’s Newcomer of the Year and became Kansas City’s first MLS Goal of the Year winner for his stunning solo effort in a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Oct. 3, 2015. The Hungarian earned MLS Player of the Month honors in May and also played a pivotal role in Sporting KC’s run to the 2015 U.S. Open Cup title, finishing as the tournament’s joint-top scorer with five goals.

Sporting KC holds a 6-3-4 lead over the Portland Timbers in the all-time series since the Oregonians joined MLS as an expansion side in 2011. That record includes a 2-1-2 mark at Children’s Mercy Park, where Sporting last beat Portland on July 31, 2016 in a 1-0 win behind Jacob Peterson’s second-half goal.

ANOTHER STADIUM RECORD BITES THE DUST

The last time the two sides clashed at Children’s Mercy Park was on July 1, 2017. In that match, eventual MLS MVP, Diego Valeri, scored a scorcher from distance to open the scoring in the first half, before Daniel Salloi stroked home his first-ever MLS goal for Sporting KC in the second half after taking down Roger Espinoza’s sumptuous chipped pass over the Timbers backline. Tim Melia would end up stealing the headlines as he denied Valeri a late winner from the penalty spot.

Sporting Kansas City continued a remarkable trend in the club’s history during Saturday night’s 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC - the first loss the expansion side has suffered at state-of-the-art Banc of California Stadium, just south of downtown LA. Bob Bradley’s side became the sixth victims of Sporting KC’s trend of inflicting first-ever defeats for MLS teams in their new stadiums.

The biggest match Sporting KC has played against Portland ended in heartbreak. In the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs Knockout Round, Sporting and Portland headed to penalty kicks following a 2-2 draw after extra time at Providence Park. The shootout would last 11 rounds, with the goalkeepers eventually called upon to take penalty kicks. Sporting KC’s Homegrown gloveman, Jon Kempin - who was only on the field following an injury to Tim Melia - saw his final spot kick saved as the Timbers advanced 7-6.

Sporting Kansas City defenders Matt Besler and Graham Zusi continue to walk in unison toward each longevity record in club history. Another such milestone was reached during Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium, as Besler and Zusi now sit at one and two in the club’s all-time appearance charts in MLS regularseason play.

No other team in the league has more than two such victories. Sporting KC also inflicted first ever defeats for the San Jose Earthquakes in Spartan Stadium in 1996, and the Dynamo at Robertson Stadium in 2006 - though both were those club’s original stadiums when they entered MLS.

Besler leads the way with 246 appearances, having overtaken current assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin and club legend Davy Arnaud earlier this season to take the all-time leader title. However, Zusi has quietly worked his way up the standings and, on Saturday night, he overtook Arnaud for second with his 241st appearance for the club in the regular season.

On Wednesday morning, Sporting Kansas City announced that defender Jimmy Medranda will miss the remainder of the 2018 season and the start of the 2019 campaign due to a knee injury.

MEDRANDA OUT FOR THE SEASON

Medranda had exploratory surgery last Friday, August 10 in LA revealing a cartilage defect in his left knee. He will undergo further surgery to repair the injury and is expected to be sidelined for eight months.

In addition, Besler started his 282nd match for the club in all competitions, passing current assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin for the most in team history, while he’s now just two away from passing Zavagnin’s final record of 291 appearances in all competitions, as Besler currently sits on 290.

Medranda, 24, appeared in each of Sporting KC’s first 12 MLS matches this season, making eight starts with two goals and one assist. He opened his 2018 scoring account in a 4-3 win over the Chicago Fire on March 10 and bagged an MLS Goal of the Week nominee in a 6-0 triumph over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 20. Five days earlier, he assisted Graham Zusi’s late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders FC. A member of Sporting KC since 2013, Medranda has tallied five goals and six assists in 97 games for the club across all competitions.

Besler and Zusi will each be honored for their achievements in a brief ceremony following warmups during Saturday’s match against the Portland Timbers, as they’ll be joined on the field by Sporting KC ownership.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES Each of the United Bid’s 23 proposed stadiums are fully built, occupied and operational, ensuring long-term use following the 2026 World Cup. The United Bid has 150 existing world-class training facilities, millions of hotel rooms, and advanced infrastructure.

Sporting Kansas City has had few issues scoring goals so far in the 2018 season. Peter Vermes’ side has found multiple goals in 18 of the club’s 26 matches in all competitions this season and has only been shutout five times. Sporting KC is the sixth highest scoring team in MLS so far in 2018 with 42 goals, while the side has scored 49 goals when including U.S. Open Cup play.

The United Bid is expected to generate more than $14 billion in revenue and $11 billion in profits for FIFA, which will be shared with the 211 FIFA Member Associations, helping further develop and expand the game of football across the globe.

Sporting KC has 14 different goalscorers so far this year in MLS play - which is the most number of different goalscorers across a single squad in the league this season. So far this season, Sporting KC has found goals from Johnny Russell (7), Daniel Salloi (7), Felipe Gutierrez (5), Diego Rubio (4), Ilie Sanchez (4), Gerso Fernandes (3), Khiry Shelton (2), Graham Zusi (2), Jimmy Medranda (2), Cristian Lobato (2), Yohan Croizet (1), Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal (1), Ike Opara (1) and Roger Espinoza (1).

INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS RETURN TO CMP

On Wednesday, May 16, it was announced that Children’s Mercy Park will host international tournaments over the next two summers. On July 26, the U.S. Women’s National Team returned to Kansas City to beat Japan 4-2 in the Tournament of Nations, with Australia also topping Brazil 3-1 as part of a doubleheader. Then, next summer, the CONCACAF Gold Cup comes back to KC for the first time since 2015 for a doubleheader in 2019. The teams and schedules for that tournament will be announced at a later date.

The 6-0 triumph over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 20 tied club records for largest margin of victory and most goals scored in a competitive match. Sporting KC has 42 goals through 23 regular-season matches this year, having scored 40 in all of 2017. The last time Sporting KC hit six goals in an MLS match was on June 20, 1999.

The U.S. WNT has now played in Kansas City eight times since its inaugural visit in 1999. Children’s Mercy Park played host to its fourth U.S WNT contest, having also welcomed crowds for a 1-1 friendly draw against Canada in 2011, a 1-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, and a 4-0 friendly victory over Costa Rica in 2016.

Sporting KC found it difficult to score on the road last season, only scoring 10 times in the club’s 17 away games in 2017 and only winning twice on the road. In 12 road games this year, Sporting KC has already surpassed last year’s total in goals with 18 and has already recorded five road wins over the Chicago Fire (March 10), the LA Galaxy (April 8), Atlanta United FC (May 9), the Houston Dynamo (Aug. 4) and Los Angeles FC (Aug. 11). Sporting also only scored multiple goals on the road two times in 2017 but has done so in seven of the club’s 12 away games so far in 2018.

The world-class home of Sporting Kansas City is one of 15 venues across 13 U.S. cities that will welcome the 2019 edition of the expanded CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will feature a record 16 nations next summer from June 14-July 7. The biennial tournament is the premier international competition of the North, Central American and Caribbean region, helping determine Concacaf’s representative at the 2021 FIFA Confederations Cup.

VERMES ERA CONTINUES

Now in the midst of his 10th season at the helm of Sporting Kansas City, manager Peter Vermes is looking to guide his side to yet another postseason appearance and remain firmly in the hunt for silverware in 2018. With the 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd regular-season match - becoming the alltime leader in games coached with one club in league history.

LOOKING TO EXTEND PLAYOFF STREAK

Sporting KC is looking to continue it’s impressive streak of postseason appearances after becoming just the sixth club in MLS history to make at least seven straight trips to the MLS Cup Playoffs, while Manager Peter Vermes is now just the fourth coach to lead the same team to seven straight playoff appearances.

Vermes is the longest tenured coach that is currently coaching a team in Major League Soccer, having been in charge of Sporting KC since 2009 - one year longer than Ben Olsen has been running the show at D.C. United. Vermes became the longest tenured coach in MLS when former LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena took the U.S. National Team coaching gig in November 2016.

Vermes has guided Sporting KC to four titles under his watch, winning three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups in 2012, 2015 and 2017, and the MLS Cup in 2013. His trophy haul ranks as the second highest among active MLS coaches - only trailing the legendary Sigi Schmid, who is currently at the helm of the LA Galaxy. On a local level, Vermes’ 10 years with SKC is the second longest tenure by a head coach in the history of major KC professional sports behind Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer Hank Stram, who was Chiefs head coach from 1963-1974.

Vermes has compiled a 157-113-90 record in all competitions with Sporting KC, including a remarkable 20-6-3 mark in U.S. Open Cup contests. Vermes’ 126 wins in MLS regular-season action ranks third among active coaches in MLS, trailing the Galaxy’s Schmid and Los Angeles FC’s Bob Bradley.

2026 WORLD CUP HEADING TO NORTH AMERICA

The United Bid of Canada, Mexico, and the United States was selected to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, June 13 by the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow. Kansas City is one of 23 Candidate Host Cities in the United Bid.

The vote, which occurred a day before the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, also marks the first time three nations have been selected to co-host a FIFA World Cup and the first time the FIFA World Cup will be played in North America in 32 years. The United Bid offers FIFA and its 211 Member Associations unity, certainty, and opportunity as they prepare to host the largest FIFA World Cup in history, which will be expanded to a 48-team format.

On the result: “This league is really tough and at the end of the day you just want to get your points wherever you can get them. We knew this was going to be a tough match, they’ve performed very well here at home. It’s a great environment, beautiful stadium and it was a pleasure for us to be able to come in here and play. They’re a very good team and I think the organization has done a great job, but at the end of the day, we’re neck and neck right now and it was important for us to get some points here. The fact that we got three points, those are big points for us.”

With the FIFA Congress decision to award the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to the federations of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the three nations will jointly manage preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup until FIFA establishes their operations to manage the competition. Among other decisions, FIFA will make the final selection of host cities for the 2026 competition from the 23 candidates proposed in the United Bid.

On his side’s defensive performance: “I think we were really good [defensively]. Sometimes when you think about defense, you think about the guys in front of the goal, but I really think our front five or six guys really pressed the game when they needed to, and that’s where I think we were really, really good. I think it was one of our best performances of the year.”
