The R175 000 Betway Spring Spree Stakes is a 1200m handicap and offers the first opportunity of the new season for Highveld horses to earn black- type. It will be supported by the Betway The Lady’s Stakes, a 1200m Non Black-Type event for fillies & mares, offering prize money of R150 000. The Spring Spree Stakes evolved from the August Stakes, which was first run over 1200m on the Vaal sand on 30 August 2008. The inaugural running was won by Messrs Wally Brits and Barry Welch’s Red Mist (Elliodor – Shuttle’s Best) for Roy Magner and Marthinus Mienie. 8 | 26 AUGUST 2026

In addition to providing a bit of sparkle to the traditionally quiet month of August, the feature also acted as a useful pointer to the Emerald Cup back in the day. Following the closure of the Vaal sand track, the race relocated to Turffontein, changed to turf, and was renamed the Spring Spree Stakes. It was run on turf for the first time on 3 September 2016, when Mrs Joyce Wallace’s Kangaroo Jack (Querari – Rainbow Flag) trained by Gary Alexander and ridden by Andrew Fortune, took the honours. Roy Magner has maintained a particularly strong affinity with the race, having saddled five winners to date.

His victories include a dead-heat in 2019, when his charge Prince Of Kahal (Kahal – Vogue) shared the spoils with Angel’s Power (Miesque’s Approval – Angel Child) trained by Mike and Adam Azzie. Magner bids for a sixth Spring Spree Stakes victory this year with Messrs Peter Moor & Adrian Nydam’s Max The Magician (What A Winter – Cast A Spell), who will be partnered by Muzi Yeni. Sean Tarry is next best with four victories, including last year’s winner, Quantum Theory (Querari – Control Freak), who will return to defend his title.

Quantum Theory is already a dual winner of the Spring Spree Stakes, having achieved the unusual distinction of winning the race at two different venues. Last year’s renewal was moved to the Vaal following the fire at the Robinson Landfill site, but Tarry’s charge prevailed to add a second victory to his record. AUGUST SALE This year’s two-day Bloodstock South Africa August Two-Year-Old Sale gave plenty of substance to the sales company’s stated aim of providing ‘a horse for every buyer’, with a diverse buying bench ensuring strong activity across the market.

The familiar big-hitters were active at the top end, there was strong demand in the mediumto-high market, and plenty of participation among smaller buyers. v

In effect, horses were bought for all the major training regions, giving the national racehorse population a welcome boost as 302 lots headed off to new stables around the country. The breadth of the market was reflected in the figures, with turnover soaring 32% from R80,505-million to R106,120-million, while the average price climbed 12% from R314,473 to R351,391. Form Bloodstock, spearheaded by veteran thoroughbred consultant Jehan Malherbe, bid aggressively among the sale’s most outstanding lots.

Malherbe bought both the highest-priced colt and filly at the sale, starting on Thursday with R2,6-million for Lot 130, a stunning chestnut filly by Vercingetorix out of Palace Of Dreams. Bred by Jan Mantel at Millstream Farm, she is a full-sister to Grand Empire and Palace Of Arvernia. Malherbe said: “She is by a champion sire out of this year’s Equus Champion Broodmare, and her full-sister is the Equus Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. We thought she was an even nicer specimen than Palace Of Arvernia was last year.” There was spirited action around the ring for Friday’s star offering, Lot 316 Ragazinno, an athletic, Varsfontein-bred son of Vercingetorix out of Ciao Bella, by Gimmethegreenlight, who topped the sale at an August Sale record price of R6-million.

Form returned to the top of the Buyers’ List for the sixth time in the past 10 years, securing eight lots for R14.505-million at an impressive average of R1,813,125.

Malherbe noted: “This colt hails from perhaps the most accomplished female line in the stud book, via the prolific Mystic Spring. Pedigrees don’t come much better than this. He is a terrific specimen. He ticked all the boxes.” High-flying Hollywood Racing, last season’s leading owners, invested R6-million in five lots at an average of R1,2-million per lot, making them the second-highest buyers. They were followed by a notably active Michael Roberts, who bought seven lots for R5,275-million, Jonathan Snaith with seven for R4,175-million and Vermaak Equine, which purchased six for R3,72-million. Glen Kotzen and Peter Racing, with 12 lots each, and KM Racing, with 10, were the most active among the middle-market buyers, while Lucinda Woodruff bought six. 14 | 26 AUGUST 2026

In the value range, Bronkhorst Racing was particularly active with nine lots, followed by Dean Smith, Jacques Mitchley and Roy Magner, who bought five apiece. Varsfontein, the perennial top-performing stud, headed the vendors’ list for the second successive year, selling 26 lots for R21-million at an average of R807,692. Millstream Farm, going from strength to strength, was the second-highest vendor, with 12 lots sold for R7.135-million, narrowly edging Wilgerbosdrift (R7.125-million) into third place – a 10th consecutive Top Three finish for the Piketberg establishment. Maine Chance Farms’ three-time champion sire Vercingetorix topped the sires’ list, with all eight of his lots finding strong demand.

No horse retired to stud with as much fanfare as did our this week’s Sprint featured cover star Charles Dickens - and with good reason. After all, here was a son of Drakenstein Stud’s feted stallion Trippi, one who had garnered the title of both Champion 3YO Male and Champion Miler, in a career which included Gr1 wins in the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge and L’Ormarins King’s Plate. v

His popularity as a racehorse was always going to spill over to his stallion career and it came as no surprise that his first-year harem included no less than 63% stakes performers or stakes producers.

mare Lyrical Dance. Successful in the Listed Scarlet Lady, she is one of four winners out of Gr1 Garden Province queen Lyrical Linda, the most notable of which is Gr1 Summer Cup hero Liege.

The resultant foals are now yearlings and those that have so far been registered are a reflection of that quality.

International owner/breeder Bjorn Nielsen, who has spread his breeding interests as far afield as South Africa, purchased Gr2 Tibouchina Stakes winner Louvre, the dam of Trippi’s champion son Trip Of Fortune. To the cover of Charles Dickens, she has produced a coveted filly, a potential future broodmare.

Drakenstein supported their homebred champion with some of their choicest mares, amongst which Snowdance. A dual Gr1 winner from the mighty Mystic Spring family, she has made a dream start to her broodmare career as the dam of Gr1 Cape Guineas hero Snow Pilot and the Listed Stakes winner Symphony In White. There is no doubt in my mind that her Charles Dickens daughter will race in the Drakenstein silks, as will fillies out of Gr1-placed Gr3 winner Winter Cloud, and Point Of Sale, one of five stakes winners out of Cash Register, a Gr3 winning own sister to Durban July winner Big City Life. Dual Oaks winner Ash Cloud, the dam of stakes winners Pacaya and Silver Hills, has a colt, as does Fly To The Moon, who produced Gr1-placed, Gr3 winner Hold My Hand to Trippi’s son Gold Standard. Even at a hefty service fee of R50 000, outside breeders flocked to the chestnut. Klawervlei Stud sent him the Elusive Fort mare Safe Harbour, who reached the frame in no less than four Gr1 races. Already dam of Oaks Trial third Darling Harbour, her Charles Dickens filly sold for R425 000 at the recent Klawervlei Dispersal Sale, while the colt out of Betty Boop, a half-sister to champion Just Sensual, fetched R280 000. Gary Player and Dave McLean bred a filly out of their stakes winning Vercingetorix 26 | 26 AUGUST 2026

Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud also supported Charles Dickens in his first season and have been rewarded with a half-brother to Gr2/3 winner Celestial Love, as well as a colt out of Zrinski, a half-sister to multiple Gr1 winner Yulong Prince. Marsh Shirtliff too, is the breeder of a colt out of Variety Club’s half-sister Lamarr. Eugene Freeman of Boland Stud knows quality when he sees it, and both he and his clients climbed into Charles Dickens by sending him some quality mares. He is more than thrilled with the first crop foals: “He probably had the best first book of mares any new stallion received and I am very impressed by the athleticism of his stock.” Boland has fillies out of Winter Oaks winner Duchess Of Bourbon and Magical Flight, a Gr1-placed daughter of Jet Master. Amongst the boarders, Miss Daisy, a Gr3winning half-sister to Gr1 SA Classic/Derby hero Purple Pitcher, also has a ‘nice, strong filly’, whilst Amarillo Rose, the dam of Gr3 winner Love Is A Rose, foaled a colt “just like mom, a nice type”.

Eugene gave Charles Dickens the stamp of approval when he remarked: “On the strength of those first foals, I went back last year and will be supporting him again this season.”

Former Sorrento Stud owner Terry Andrews and Greg Delponte welcomed a Charles Dickens half-sister to Gr3 winner and Gr1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate runner-up Montien.

Former Avontuur GM Pippa Mickleburgh sent two maiden mares to Charles Dickens. Perfect Promise Sprint runner-up Distinction and Riverenza, an unraced Silvano half-sister to Gr1 winning sprinter Rivarine, out of that grand racemare River Jetez. Both mares foaled fillies.

Champion breeders Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein sent Charles Dickens three cracking mares.

“It would be hard to find a better looking specimen than Distinction’s filly, she’s big, strong, correct and powerful, an awesome, awesome first foal. I’m very excited and she will go the March Sale. “Riverena’s filly is a typical first foal, she is neat and correct but will go to a later sale.” 28 | 26 AUGUST 2026

Gimmethecherry, a half-sister to Summer Pudding, produced a filly, whilst multiple Gr2 winner Welwitschia is the dam of a halfbrother to dual Gr1 winner Desert Miracle. The trio is rounded out by a colt out of Gr3 winner Clafoutis. If the above sample is any indication of the quality of his first crop, there is little doubt that Charles Dickens will have plenty of ammunition to go to war with when his first runners hit the racetrack.

However, this brief outline barely touches on the brilliance that the Riverton Stud-bred star showed on the racecourse.

A winner of two of four starts at two, Captain Of All claimed the first Gr1 victory of his career when downing Gr1 SA Nursery winner Willow Magic by a length in the 2013 Gr1 Tsogo Sun Medallion. Further back in the Gold Medallion came the likes of subsequent Gr1 winners Kochka and Normanz. 34 | 26 AUGUST 2026

It was at four, though, that Captain Of All truly shone. Named Champion Sprinter at the end of that campaign, he captured a trio of graded races, including the Gr1 Mercury Sprint and Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint. He defied top weight to win the Tsogo Sun Sprint and demolished champions Carry On Alice and Legislate by four and a half lengths when victorious in the Mercury Sprint.

Captain Of All wasted no time in making his mark at stud, and was South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2018-2019.

As Linebacker indicated, Captain Of All is more than capable of siring horses who stayed much further than he did.

His first crop included five black-type performers, headed by triple graded stakes winner, and Gr1 SA Derby runner up, Shango.

Further examples of this include the aforementioned Shango (who won up to 2400m) and Fiery Pegasus.

Other notable members of this crop included high-class sprinters Cartel Captain and Captain Hindsight, both of whom earned more than R1 000 000, and the stakes winning fillies Captain Anne Bonny and What You Are. Captain Of All also has the distinction of being the first son of Captain Al to sire a Gr1 winner, with his star son Linebacker winning the 2021 Jonsson Workwear Gr1 Cape Derby. Linebacker, a member of his sire’s second crop, would go on to win both that season’s World Sports Betting Gr2 Guineas and Gr1 Daily News 2000 before finishing second in the Vodacom Gr1 Durban July.

The latter, her sire’s best daughter thus far, won both the Wilgerbosdrift Gr1 SA Fillies Classic (1800m) and Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer Gr2 SA Oaks (2450m). A full-sister to Shango, Fiery Pegasus was a member of Captain Of All’s sixth crop. This crop also included Listed Betway National Colour Sprint winner Whistle The Tune. Captain Of All’s fifth crop produced one of his best runners in the form of Jerusalema Rain. The latter showed high-class form at two when finishing second, behind subsequent dual Gr1 winner Lucky Lad, in the 2023 World Sports Betting Gr2 SA Nursery, and also accounted for subsequent Equus Champion Sandringham Summit when victorious in a juvenile plate over 1160m. Jerusalema Rain picked up a well deserved graded win when winning the 2026 TAB Gr2 Senor Santa Stakes. In the process, he accounted for champion sprinter Buffalo Storm Cody, albeit while receiving no less than 11,5kgs. Captain Of All has also enjoyed good success in the sales ring-a Captain Of All colt made R700 000 at this year’s KZN Yearling Sale, while another son of Captain Of All colt made R450 000 at last year’s Premier Yearling Sale. 26 AUGUST 2026 | 35

“The great thing about racing is that we really can get as much pleasure out of an open maiden on a Friday afternoon, as we do out of a feature winner in one of the major centres,” quipped the Observatory-born Bishops Old Boy, after he had saddled his first winner from his new East Cape base at Fairview last Friday. While his string numbers just four horses, of which three can race, Peter remains positive that he will grow his business. At the age of 67, the NHA and Kenilworth Racing life-member arrived at his Fairview stables from Milnerton, where he had been riding work for over 45 years, on 1 April. While starting any new chapter on April Fool’s day might be seen as being on shaky ground, Peter is positive by nature and loves the warmth and hospitality of the local community. And his icebreaker, courtesy of the William Longsword filly Lovely Dancer last Friday, was a welcome indicator that he could just be on the right track. “The facilities are vastly different here – and while it may not be Summerveld, the environment has proven a tonic for Lovely Dancer, who was frankly more dead, than a dead cert, when she transferred here from the Cape.” He told the Sporting Post that he was fortunate to get the filly. “She was immature – but the change of scenery and the opportunity to walk through the bush has settled and helped her. She has missed the money only once here – and it was my fault as I put the blinkers on and pushed her a further 200m,” enthused Peter, as he said he had to thank the Fairview

management, the Strydom family and neighbour Lunga Gila for the assistance and warmth extended to a newbie in a strange town. Interviewing Peter can be quite a juggling experience – he then switches tack to stressing how important environment and a refresh can be for a horse. “Look at that horse Charlie Bucket. He was knocking at the door in Cape Town. He moved to Summerveld, he won his maiden easily at his first start, and then followed up with an easy end-to end victory. I am not sure what happened on Sunday, when he was scratched at the start, but they will sort that out,” he adds. But back to his Friday winner, Lovely Dancer. Her owner Andy Elton is a UK-based longstanding supporter of South African racing. “Andy understands the necessity of a wide pool of horses to cover so many racing centres. He also understands that monopolies work contrary to such a necessity. He arrived in SA racing through the late John McDonald and has continued supporting only the smaller trainers of the ilk of the Paul Reeves and Andries Steyn yards. His pink colours make up many fields in Cape Town and he has often had 5 runners at a meeting. John suggested he keep me in mind for a third small trainer, if the need arose.” Peter rode work for over 40 years and has 20 Hunt Club winners to his credit, including four on the trot on Dark Lord for Dave Coleman. He earned the tag of Lester - after the legend Piggott - and remembers being motivated years ago as a young man, by a comment 26 AUGUST 2026 | 39

where his Pathfork mare Black Path had 20 runs at the age of 6, to qualify as the most raced horse in Cape Town.

“Many top trainers, including the likes of Geoff Woodruff, Justin Snaith and Dean Kannemeyer came through those ranks. We had top-class horsemen and women – the likes of Jeff Steadman, Zayed Anthony, Gillian Ross and many, many more. It was a nursery that spawned the greats of the future – something I believe that is sadly lacking today.”

“She never won a race. The usual detractors were suggesting the clown of a trainer had overraced her. Yet she was so consistent that she got us a third on the Cape Winter Log and consecutive run bonuses of R90 000 and R35 000. You can imagine me being greedy, so I forced her to race at 7. She showed how sour she was by winning on 27 August and 15 January. Fact is, she’s an example of a late maturer as more than half her runs have been at 5,6,7 and 8 years of age,” he observes with a broad smile.

Being a ‘small trainer’, Peter naturally sees the advantages to the owner of personal attention and of getting the very best out of what would often be regarded as ordinary horses. “Why would an owner go to a small trainer, when they can pay double and race half as much in a bigger yard?” he smiles as he proudly reflects back on the 2024/25 season 40 | 26 AUGUST 2026

This season at the age of 8, when, as Peter points out, she is supposed to be ‘finished’ on average standard SA terms, Black Path has run fifth over 1200m and 10 days later she ran second in a mile, just under a fortnight back.

“She is due to be covered by Ridgemont’s exciting stallion Thunderstruck, who I believe is going to be a success. But in the interim, Black Path talks to me. While awaiting the return of her dourine test she wants another run and that will be on 6 September at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, which will probably be her swansong,” he adds, while pointing out that, while Black Path has not been a financial success story over her six-year career, she has fueled the passion, provided regular interest, fun and good results. “Money cannot replace those things. That’s why we race. To enjoy the horses that we love so much, rather than the recognition of success because one horse won a feature.”

“We are a proper team. I don’t watch and direct operations. I muck out and help my grooms, who are loyal and hardworking guys. I would probably describe myself as a reluctant trainer because I had empirical observation of many. It’s a tough business. Just 15 months after I started, COVID hit hard and nobody was sheltered from the damage. When Black Path won her maiden under Richard Fourie at her second start just before Christmas 2021, she earned just R26 000! As breeders culled it became harder to find horses and that is still evident at all the sales now. Recently crowned 2025/26 SA Champion owners Hollywood Racing enjoyed a first and third, with the Cliffie Miller-trained Ingqwele (25-1) chasing the runner-up.

Going off a 13-10 favourite in the R175 000 Nelson Mandela Bay Racing NBT Poly Challenge 1200, Cruise Control was always in a stalking position as the former Highveld-based Mover And Shaker made the running.

Hollywood Racing acquired the gelding in May 2024, and he produced a cracking first effort for the KZN team when running fourth behind Lucky Lad in the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint.

Taking the shortest route home, Cruise Control asserted his authority in the run for home, getting first run on the series’ defending champion Mercantour.

A Boland Stud-bred son of the outstanding Querari (Oasis Dream), Cruise Control is out of the Sail From Seattle mare, Eurythmics.

It was a move that sealed the deal, with Cruise Control clocking 68,31 secs for the 1200m and beating Mercantour (15-10) by 1,75 lengths.

The original owner Vicky Veeramootoo went to R200 000 for Cruise Control at Nationals.

Cruise Control has won 16 races with 9 places from 34 starts for stakes of R692 193.

The next leg of the challenge will be run over 1400m on Friday 25 September, with the final leg over on 16 October. In addition to the stake money, 4Racing offers a R250 000 bonus to the connections of any horse that wins all three legs of the series.

A R50 000 consolation bonus will also be paid to the connections of any horse that contests all three legs and wins at least one. Cruise Control has never run beyond 1200m, so is an unlikely contender in the next two legs. ZAC LLOYD CATCHES EYE AS YOKOYAMA RAISES BAR

Norihiro Yokoyama won two of the fourleg series held over two days to win this year’s World All-Star Jockeys, becoming the first jockey to win JRA’s international jockeys’ series three times, following his titles in 1995 and 2009 (then called the World Super Jockeys Series). Norihiro Yokoyama stood second at the end of Day One with 32 points, finishing ninth with 13th pick Xebec in the first leg and winning the second leg with fourth favorite Can’t Wait. On Day Two, the veteran jockey finished 14th with 11th choice Win Harmonia in the third leg but scored another win in the fourth leg with second pick Million Crown to claim the overall title with a total of 63 points. 60 | 26 AUGUST 2026

RACECOURSES FACING A ‘CRUCIAL’ PERIOD

The lingering effects of extreme temperatures and a drought this summer have left British racecourses facing a “crucial” period over the next month as they race to get ready for the start of the core jumps season. A series of heatwaves and lack of rain between June and August has left tracks parched across Britain, with several meetings this summer forced to reschedule due to temperatures routinely rising above 30C. While Britain’s major jumps venues have been closed during the worst of the heat, 64 | 26 AUGUST 2026

the difficult weather has left clerks with a challenge to make conditions suitable for the start of the core jumps season, and cooler temperatures this week offered some hope that rain will arrive in time to ensure safe racing ground this autumn.

“All the preparations for the jumps season are going well, other than the weather,” said Exeter clerk Jason Loosemore. “The ground has been looking yellow and pretty lifeless, but we had 12 millimetres of rain last Tuesday and the track this morning had a slightly greener hue to it. There are some little signs of life just popping out. “Everyone’s been waiting for rain all summer. Looking at the forecast now, there’s signs of rain, whereas two weeks ago there wasn’t anything. The nights are getting cooler too, so I think there’s enough grounds that you have to be optimistic that things are starting to turn.” While Exeter has seven weeks to prepare the track for its season opener, Plumpton has less than a month before it ushers in its new jumps campaign, but clerk Marcus Waters has also been encouraged by the cooler temperatures in recent days. “There’s still a long way to go,” Waters said. “We started irrigating about two weeks earlier than normal. The prolonged warm and dry period has taken its toll a little bit but thankfully the track has fared fairly well. We had quite a wet beginning of June, so the water levels were well topped up into July and it was only in the last four to six weeks that we started to see it brown off a little bit more. “We’ve got the irrigation going now and it’s started to green up quite nicely. Hopefully we get more showers than we miss and if not, we’ll be watering pretty much every day from now until racing to get it ready. “There’s a big push for ground to be the easy side of good and we’d like to aim for that, but it’s obviously been an extreme year. It’s going to be a challenge but we’ll produce the best ground we possibly can.” 66 | 26 AUGUST 2026

Temperatures are cooler in Britain this week but the dry weather is still impacting racing, with next week’s Flat fixture at Lingfield moved from the turf to the all-weather due to the challenging conditions. While Lingfield does not have to worry about jump racing until November, there is less time for some of Britain’s other jumps tracks with the traditional core season opener at Chepstow scheduled for October 9. “This next month is going to be crucial, absolutely crucial,” Loosemore added. “The optimism at the moment is all on the promise of rain and the hope that it’s heavy. If in a month’s time it hasn’t materialised, I’m going to be in a very different mood about it. “It’s now a question about how quickly the ground eases, so we have safe conditions on which to race. If we could average an inch or more of rain a week we’d probably be okay, albeit a little quicker than we want to be. We’ve got seven weeks until our opener, and that’s a long time, and the weather pattern is hopefully changing in our favour.” The worst of the hot weather might be over in Britain but Waters warns that drastic weather conditions are now becoming the norm. “The weather patterns are getting more extreme,” he said. “We’re having hotter and drier spells for longer, and then more intense periods of rain. Over the year it averages out but we seem to have more prolonged periods of extreme weather. With talk of the El Nino and what that might bring too, it’s tricky to manage. “It’s a slightly new normal, but we just have to take it as it comes.” www.racingpost.com

The plan was to come here and cement another Gr1 for a horse who is in the final year of his career. I am delighted that he has achieved that – when you get horses that are still winning races like this at four and five, you really have to take your hat off to them. He has shown his durability and hopefully he will take those attributes on to his stud career.

Her Majesty graciously presented the trophy for the richest race ever run at York, the £1,5 million Juddmonte International. It was received by the Juddmonte team as their colt, Item, was the victor. They also collected the feature race of Thursday courtesy of Kalpana in the Legends Global Yorkshire Oaks. On Friday, a horse travelled from Florida to win the fastest race of the year, with Bacio storming home in the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe before his rider continued a theme

of travelling at speed, to dash back to the States to ride in California on Saturday. Continuing the international sporting theme, Satono Reve came from Tokyo to run in the Gr1 Sky Bet City of York Stakes, delivering a creditable run in behind Notable Speech, who added a sixth top drawer title to his glittering CV. On the final afternoon, the connections of Daiquiri Bay the winning horse in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor collected the prize. This success, meant that Help 4 Homeless Veterans were the winning charity in the Sky Bet Ebor Community Sweepstake, receiving a donation of £20,000 towards their good work.

Racegoers supported the festival in even greater numbers than last year, meaning an overall 3% rise in attendance, which is a tribute to them as the opening two days saw a return of more typical Yorkshire summer with some disheartening rain. A record investment in prize money approaching £7,5m across the Ebor Festival delivered fantastic racing action with an increase in runners, to a record 459 declared, making an average field size of over 16. Commenting on the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course William Derby said: “A memorable four days saw some twenty-five horses that had already won a Gr1 race compete for record prize money in front of a knowledgeable and enthusiastic crowd. Of course, a highlight was the visit of our Royal Patron who spent

time with the unsung heroes who delivered the wider festival. Everyone at York can look back with huge pride on four days where world class racing and an investment in the racegoer experience contributed to a fabulous atmosphere. The filly by 2021 US Horse Of The Year, Knicks Go, was selected by multiple South African champion trainer Sean Tarry at the 2024 Keeneland Association September Yearling Sale. Bred in Ontario by Mr. Ravi Sugrim and Ms. Joannie Dass, Luster is out of the The Factor mare, Ruby Frost, and has since developed into a star for Antony Beck’s Gainesway Stables and Andrew Rosen. Her emphatic victory made Luster the 40th filly to win the opening leg of the Canadian Triple Crown - and gave Tarry the considerable satisfaction of seeing a horse he had picked out at Keeneland produce on one of racing’s biggest stages. 92 | 26 AUGUST 2026

Trained by Josie Carroll and ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, Luster started a short-priced favourite at 1-5 and covered the trip in 2:02.01. “I knew she was very special, but I certainly didn’t expect that,” Carroll said. Luster shows a record of five wins and one third-place finish, with earnings over $1 million, and Rosen said he was thrilled to hoist Canadian racing’s most coveted trophy. “It’s amazing. I’ve been in the business over 40 years, and winning a race like this is just fantastic. It’s what it’s all about. Last year, Josie told me that we were going to be standing here.”

Tarry, who has enjoyed Beck’s patronage in South Africa for a long time, with notable Equus champions Celtic Sea and Lucky Lad among his runners, was invited to Keeneland in 2024. He made the trip with his son Daniel and spent two memorable weeks on the farm. “It was good to see how Antony and the Gainesway team manage their operation, and we loved every minute of our stay.” He describes the Keeneland Sale as a massive operation, with 400-500 lots – or ‘hips’, as they are known in the US – going through the ring each day. The best lots, he said, are generally offered during the first two days, making the selection process an enormous undertaking.

“Antony has briefed me enthusiastically on Luster’s progress ever since. He got more and more excited as she showed her worth in training, and what she’s done so far is just sensational. “It is heartwarming when a person of Antony’s experience has so much faith in my eye and trusts me wholeheartedly when it comes to horse selection. Luster’s big win comes at an appropriate time as he has bought a farm in South Africa and has been actively buying at our various sales.”

“It takes a massive amount of work to inspect as many as possible. Antony has a professional team dedicated to selecting yearlings.

Beck, speaking from Gainesway, commented: “Sean has an incredible eye for an athlete. He’s been extremely successful for me in South Africa from not too many runners. Luster was one of his top choices and she is now the likely three-year-old Champion of Canada – five from six with the highest Beyer Rating (102) of any threeyear-old filly in North America.”

“We liked a few choice lots in the first couple of days. We bid on one of them, but the competition around the ring was fierce and we couldn’t get a blow in. Then, by day four, Daniel and I had planned a quick trip to New York, but Antony asked us to stay for the sale and go through that day’s catalogue.

The second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown will be the Prince of Wales Stakes, which will be contested at 1900m on the dirt at Fort Erie Racetrack on 7 September, before the series wraps up back at Woodbine with the Breeders’ Stakes going 2400m on the turf on 27 September.

“The team earmarked 100 lots, and then we cut it down to 20. From those, I prepared a shortlist of six yearlings. What I liked about Luster was that she was beautifully scopy, with a fantastic girth. We were already on the plane when Antony messaged to say they’d secured her for just $80,000. It was a fitting and joyous end to our trip.”

Superstar Sydney mare Autumn Glow made a barnstorming return to the track when she beat boom four-year-old Sheza Alibi in a memorable Gr1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday. Having her first start since her only defeat, when third behind brilliant gelding Sir Delius in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in April, Autumn Glow showed she was in for a lucrative campaign for connections with a solid win in a crack field. The widely anticipated match race lived up the billing with the year older and more seasoned Chris Waller prepared star holding an almost length and a half margin on the post over her Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman trained rival. 96 | 26 AUGUST 2026

Waller, who prepares the Arrowfield and Hermitage raced five-year-old, said he was looking forward to more tough battles with the reigning Doncaster winner over the coming weeks and months. “It was great that Peter Moody and the owners brought the mare up to Sydney,” Waller said. “This was the first round of competition running these headline horses.”

“People come to the races because they want to see these great horses racing each other. We don’t always want the clashes but it is important for the sport. We have come out of round one pretty well but I’m pretty sure there will be round two or round three.” “We know how good she is, so nothing has changed. We just needed her to come back and show where she is. Peter said Sheza Alibi was 82.7 percent so we might be 83.1 percent. It is hard to quantify. She was ready to go because I didn’t want her to have a tough time first-up. If he (James McDonald) had to reach beyond what she was fit enough to do then that is tough. She was forward enough for sure.” Champion jockey James McDonald was also busy choosing from a long list of superlatives for the outstanding daughter of The Autumn Sun. “She’s so special, just her gate speed and tractability,” a beaming McDonald said. “She knows when she’s in a race because from the 500 to the 400, it’s like she just powers into herself and just builds herself, she just knows.” “It’s an incredible feeling and even though she puts herself in good spots, for her to have that audacity to fill her lungs up and know it’s go time, just let rip, it’s just incredible.” Like Waller, McDonald said he loved the fact his champ was able to pit her powers against another star in Sheza Alibi. “She (Autumn Glow) doesn’t have to improve. The second horse, take nothing away, she’s special as well. An incredible performance by her and I think we just embrace the two mares for how good they are.”

“Even if they clash they’re two special, great horses that have come along at the same time. One’s a year older, but when they have their clashes it’s going to be some great rivalry. I wouldn’t swap all to go for nothing but I love the competitiveness,” McDonald added. AFTER WINNER’S ENCLOSURE ALTERCATION The incident, which occurred during the valuable Lanark Silver Bell card, has been reported by the track to the relevant authorities. It occurred after Fallon had finished last of three in the third race, a 1m3f novice event, on Wathnan Racing’s Flagbearer, who started the 9-2 outsider of the trio and was beaten by two necks. In a statement released on Monday, the course said: “Following the 5.40pm race at Hamilton Park on Friday, an incident occurred involving jockey Cieren Fallon and a racegoer. Following reports of unacceptable conduct, the individual involved was ejected from the racecourse by our security team. 102 | 26 AUGUST 2026

“The matter has been referred to the relevant industry authorities and Hamilton Park will provide any information or assistance required, should it be requested as part of any formal inquiries.” It added: “Hamilton Park racecourse operates a zero-tolerance policy towards abusive, threatening or antisocial behaviour. “We expect everyone attending the racecourse to be treated with respect, whether they are a racegoer, member of staff, official or racing participant. Abuse directed towards any individual on site is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“The safety and wellbeing of our staff, participants, racegoers and the wider racing community remains our priority. Hamilton is celebrating 100 years of racing in 2026 and Friday night’s card was a centenary celebration. The £103,000 Lanark Silver Bell Handicap was the richest race ever staged at the course and was part of a fixture that carried a total of £210,100 in prize-money. Fallon, 27, is the son of six-time champion jockey Kieren Fallon and has been riding since 2018. He was champion apprentice the following year and again in 2020.

He has gone on to prove himself one of Britain’s leading riders and finished fourth in the jockeys’ championship last season. He is in the same position this year, with 64 winners on the board. His main employer is Flagbearer’s trainer William Haggas, who gave him his biggest winner of this season, Lake Forest in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood last month. Fallon declined to comment when approached by the Racing Post. A BHA spokesman said: “We are aware of reports relating to an alleged incident at Hamilton on Friday, August 21. EVEREST DEFENCE It was business as usual at Sha Tin on Friday morning as Ka Ying Rising dominated his return barrier trial ahead of the 2026/27 Hong Kong season, when he’ll reappear in the newly upgraded HK$4.2 million Gr3 HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup Handicap to be contested over 1200m. Slated for a first-up run in the season-opening feature on Sunday, 6 September – which he won in 2024 and 2025 as a Class 1 contest – Ka Ying Rising lengthened sharply under Zac Purton on Friday by nine and three-quarter 104 | 26 AUGUST 2026

lengths in front of Thunder Prince (second) in 1m 01.16s over 1050m on the rain-affected dirt as he led the seven-runner trial from start to finish.

“He put on a bit of weight in the break. He got up over 1,190 pounds, so he’s certainly enjoying his life. He’ll only get one run on opening day here, and then he goes to The Gr1 Everest,” Purton said. Trained by David Hayes, Ka Ying Rising has won his past 20 races – a Hong Kong racing record – and was crowned co-Hong Kong Horse of the Year (2025/26) with Romantic Warrior last season, his second time receiving the accolade for owner Ka Ying Syndicate. Australian Racing Hall of Famer Purton, who captured a ninth riding championship in 2025/26 with 143 wins in Hong Kong – including four Group 1’s with Ka Ying Rising at Sha Tin – also became the first jockey in the city’s racing history to surpass 2 000 victories.

The Everest is the world’s richest turf race, won in 2025 by Ka Ying Rising, and will take place on 17 October at Royal Randwick in Sydney, Australia. The nine-time Group 1 winner is expected to trial again on 30 August at Sha Tin. “He was a little bit rusty. He’ll be fine. It’s a starting point for him and it’s nice to have him back there doing something a bit more competitive. He certainly needed that,” Purton said. Fast Network is one of five horses expected to travel overseas and race on 6 September, set to compete in Japan’s Gr2 Centaur Stakes (1200m) at Hanshin in preparation for the Gr1 Sprinters Stakes (1200m) at Nakayama on 27 September.

He had a very good reaction, and because the track (condition) isn’t very good, I just told the jockey to take him back and let him finish off in the straight. Everything is fine.”

Ridden by Dylan Mo, Self Improvement was niggled along to finish second behind Cala Dei Mori in 1m 11.38s as he prepares to defend his Gr3 Korea Sprint (1200m, sand) title. Mo said: “I’m very happy with his trial – we made him work a little bit. Everything is good, and it was just to increase his fitness.”
