Letter from Board Chair, Carol Nelson Dear Friends, Subscribers, Donors, and Sponsors, Thanks to all of you, and our exceptional orchestra, the Spokane Symphony’s 80th season was a huge success. Your support has allowed the Symphony to continue our mission to ‘Bring the Power of Music to Life’ by expanding our outreach to the community, especially to those who may not be able to attend live concerts. In addition to Symphony Day for elementary students, and Side-by-Side Concerts with high school students, our musicians are also providing programs at libraries, day care centers, memory care facilities, and hospitals. They often bring the instrument ‘petting zoo’ so young children can try out various instruments. Musicians also assist elementary and secondary music teachers by going into the classroom and working with groups of students and their instruments. These connections with music can impact lives. We would like to thank all of our subscribers, new and renewing. Your support through subscription purchases is a vital part of our budget. Our end of season campaign was very successful and even exceeded our goal! Meeting our financial goals allows us to continue ‘Bring the Power of Music to Life’. With help from all of you, we can impact the lives of people of all ages in the region. Like you, I want the Spokane Symphony to be creating beautiful music for generations to come! Letter from Chief Executive Officer, Steve Wenig As we look back on our 80th anniversary season, I am deeply proud of our growing impact and grateful to everyone who contributed to our success. Joining this organization in January has been a great honor; every day, I am inspired by our orchestra, our team, and our remarkable community. Onstage at the iconic Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, James and the orchestra delivered unforgettable performances that united thousands of listeners. Highlights included Jess Walter’s reimagined narration of Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, a transcendent Verdi Requiem alongside the Chorale, and popular favorites ranging from our Williams vs. Zimmer matchup to immersive film and orchestra presentations including La La Land. Offstage, our education and community engagement programs expanded across the region. In local classrooms, symphony musicians mentored and inspired the younger generation of listeners and student musicians. Through initiatives such as the Lullaby Project and our work in memory care facilities, we brought meaningful connection, uplift and healing to those facing difficult circumstances. Letter from Music Director, James Lowe Roughly 2,500 years ago, Pythagoras proposed that music has a physical effect on the human body, insisting that his students open and close each day with it. Modern neuroscience is only now confirming what musicians have long known: peer-reviewed research shows music measurably lowers stress hormones, heart rate, and blood pressure. Music is not an ornament, it is a vital force in the lives of those who make it and those who hear it. I have long believed that an orchestra must move beyond the concert hall and bring music directly into the life of its community. As you will read in this report, this philosophy is embraced wholeheartedly by the Spokane Symphony family and has helped establish us as one of the most community-embedded orchestras in the country. Last year I spoke of expanding our education programs. This season, that expansion took root, now a part of our very DNA, reaching more schools and more students than ever before. We owe particular thanks to The Johnston Fix Foundation and Dr. Jason Moody, our Head of Education and Community Engagement, whose vision and tireless work have been at its center. This season we bid farewell to Larry Jess, who retires after 55 years as our Principal Trumpet, a tenure spanning most of this orchestra’s history. It is a fitting reminder of what these musicians are to this city: not just performers, but mentors, educators, and advocates for this art form’s future. Letter from Development Director, Jan Ager What began as a six-month consulting engagement through Ager Consulting became a five-year journey with the Spokane Symphony. Together we navigated COVID, organizational transitions, leadership changes, and a shifting fundraising landscape. Through every chapter, the generosity of our donors and their belief in the Symphony remained at the heart of our work. I leave this role deeply grateful for the relationships built and proud of the progress made. This past year, our small but mighty Development team exceeded our Contributed Income goal by deepening ties with longtime supporters, welcoming new donors, and expanding corporate and foundation partnerships. I am especially proud of the collaboration among Development, Marketing, and Education that helped tell a robust story of the Symphony. We are far more than what happens on The Fox stage. Today the Symphony serves as an anchor for music education across five school districts, reaching thousands of students while forging meaningful partnerships throughout our community. The inaugural Viennese Gala powered by the dedicated volunteers of the Spokane Symphony Associates, showed what is possible when talented staff and dedicated volunteers work toward a shared goal. Our continued focus on Planned Giving has also resulted in significant legacy commitments from members of the Musical Legacy Society that will carry the Symphony well into the future. It has been a privilege to work alongside our board, musicians, staff, volunteers, and especially our donors. There is strong momentum ahead. The relationships, partnerships, and culture of philanthropy built over these five years provide a solid foundation for the Symphony’s next chapter. Jan Ager Development Director

Interactive Early Childhood Events

Musicians share their love of music with even our youngest community members and guide them in interactive musical play time. LULLABY PROJECT In collaboration with the Spokane Public Library, we offered selected families from Lumen High School, Thrive International, Joya, and the Salish School of Spokane a FREE opportunity to write original lullabies with professional musicians. Families then watched Spokane Symphony musicians perform their lullabies for their little ones and received a recording to keep in the family forever.

Sensory-Friendly performances are designed with modifications for those presenting with special sensory needs. “All kids should have the ability to go and enjoy things that might not always be inclusive. Music and the Mind

Music and the Mind is an integrated community wellness initiative that harnesses the transformative power of live music to improve health, strengthen resilience, and foster meaningful human connection. Through innovative, evidence-informed programs, Music and the Mind uses music as a catalyst for emotional wellbeing, social engagement, and quality of life across the lifespan. The initiative currently includes the Reconnect Dementia Project, which supports individuals living with dementia and their care partners through meaningful musical experiences; the Lullaby Project ( featured on page 6), and Sensory-Friendly Concerts (featured on page 11.) As community needs continue to evolve, Music and the Mind will serve as an umbrella for additional programs and partnerships to be launched in the 2026-27 season.

Message from the 2025-26 SSA President, Elizabeth Raol As SSA President, years 2025/2026, and in my 26th year of working to achieve increasing our donation to our Symphony, I am both delighted and proud of SSA. All of the members serving on our board, as Event Chairs for Christmas Tree Elegance, Coordinators of Upscale Sale, Custers Sale, Buy It Now, as Chapter Chairs, but especially being a part of our newest, and very successful fundraiser-the Postcards From Vienna Gala. Spokane Symphony Associates IN MEMORIAM

SUSAN KENNEDY•1942-2026

The Spokane Symphony Associates family mourns the passing of Susan Kennedy, whose extraordinary legacy of service to the Spokane Symphony spanned more than three decades. After making Spokane her home in 1985, Susan became a champion for the musical arts. A member of the Ferden Chapter and former Spokane Symphony Board of Trustees member, she generously gave her time and leadership to Christmas Tree Elegance and famously founded the Upscale Sale (in her garage), which grew to become SSA’s second largest annual fundraiser. Susan often joked that she could not play a single note, yet few people did more to ensure that music would continue to thrive in Spokane. With her husband, Paul, she welcomed countless people into the Symphony family and helped endow the principal bassoon chair that bears their names. Named a 2019 Spokesman-Review Woman of the Year, Sue was known for her warmth, positivity, gracious spirit, and remarkable ability to bring people together. The Susan Kennedy Spirit of SSA Award, named in her honor, ensures that the qualities she embodied will continue to inspire future generations of volunteers. Susan believed that music nourishes the soul. Her impact on the Spokane Symphony, SSA, and our community will be felt for generations.

Spokane Symphony Chorale

Chorale Director: Dr. Meg Stohlmann The 80-member Spokane Symphony Chorale plays a vital role in the programming and concerts that happen throughout the Masterworks season, and more. Directed by Dr. Meg Stohlmann, the chorale is comprised of professional, amateur and collegiate singers who undergo a rigorous audition process, exhibiting exceptional levels of technique and musicianship. The 2025–26 season was truly remarkable for the Spokane Symphony Chorale. From Messiah and Holiday Pops to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Verdi’s Requiem, our singers continually rose to the challenge of an ambitious season, bringing extraordinary commitment, musicianship, and heart to every performance. That journey culminated in June with the incredible opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall. Standing together on that historic stage was about far more than performing in an iconic venue. It was a celebration of the artistic growth of this ensemble and the community we have built together. I was incredibly proud to watch our singers represent the Spokane Symphony and the Inland Northwest on a national stage. Carnegie was an unforgettable milestone, but even more meaningful was experiencing it together. It was a fitting conclusion to a season that demonstrated just how special this Chorale and the people who make it truly are.

RETIRING MUSICIANS LARRY JESS PRINCIPAL TRUMPET 1969-2026 After a 55-year career with the Spokane Symphony, principal trumpet Larry Jess retired from the orchestra and The Fox Theater stage where he built a remarkable legacy. Larry joined the Spokane Symphony as third trumpet in 1969 while attending Eastern Washington University and went on to become a defining musical voice for generations of audiences. Throughout his career, Larry also performed with local bands, taught private lessons, helped found the Spokane Jazz Society, and became a fixture in the region’s music community. Larry gave his final performance with the Spokane Symphony on May 10, one day before his 77th birthday. We wish him all the best in retirement, and hold much gratitude for his decades of artistry, mentorship, friendship, and unwavering dedication to the orchestra.

GREG YASINITSKY PRINCIPAL SAXOPHONE 1991-2026 Greg served as Principal Saxophonist of the Spokane Symphony for 35 years, joining the orchestra in 1991. In addition to performing numerous featured saxophone solos and appearances as a concerto soloist, he made lasting contributions as a composer and arranger. His works performed by the Symphony include Celebration Overture, Appleville Musicians, Concertino for Flute and Orchestra, and Honor Song, as well as several commissioned pops arrangements. His award-winning Jazz Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, winner of the American Prize and a Pulitzer Prize nominee, has been performed by orchestras throughout the United States and internationally. His enduring impact on the Spokane Symphony has enriched the organization, its musicians, and audiences for more than three decades.

In Memoriam CHARLES ‘CHUCK’ KARSCHNEY 1960-2026 Chuck Karschney was a beloved member of the Spokane Symphony family whose legacy continues to resonate through the music, dedication, and spirit he shared with our organization for more than four decades. He developed a lifelong connection to music that would shape both his personal and professional life. Though often a man of few words, he found his truest voice through the French horn, expressing with music what words could not. His love of music led to a lifetime of meaningful relationships, experiences, and service to the art form he cherished. Chuck began his career with the Spokane Symphony as a horn player and later assumed the role of Production Manager. For forty years, he skillfully designed and coordinated every concert setup with remarkable precision, creativity, and care. His work behind the scenes helped ensure that each performance unfolded seamlessly, often without audiences ever realizing the immense effort required to make it happen. It was not uncommon to see Chuck move a piano across the stage in the middle of a concert, dressed in a tuxedo, before returning to perform with the orchestra. Few people embodied so completely the spirit of doing whatever was needed to serve the music. Chuck will be remembered not only for his extraordinary service to the Spokane Symphony, but also for the kindness, reliability, and quiet generosity that defined his life. His dedication strengthened our organization, enriched our musical community, and left an enduring mark on all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. His presence will be deeply missed, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come.
