pring is blooming around us and bringing a sense of renewal, hope, and gratitude. The Easter season is a time of reflection and rejoicing for many across the globe. It is a season marked by the celebration of new beginnings, the triumph of light over darkness, and the promise of rejuvenation.
Easter holds a profound significance in various cultures and faiths, symbolizing not only the resurrection of Christ, but also the potential for personal and collective rebirth. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith, love, and compassion to uplift and unite in times of adversity. Wishing a blessed Easter and spring season to our dear Vestnik readers.
April is National Volunteer Month, and it’s a great time to express our heartfelt appreciation to all SPJST volunteers for their dedication and commitment to serving others. Your selfless acts of kindness and compassion inspire us all and serve as a testament to the power of volunteerism.
We are fortunate to have a network of volunteers who embody the spirit of service and community. From our dedicated members in lodges to the passionate leaders and children in our youth clubs, each volunteer plays a vital role in fostering camaraderie, support, and enrichment within their respective communities.
Throughout Texas, SPJST volunteers tirelessly contribute to a wide array of initiatives, from organizing
cultural events and charitable fundraisers to providing vital assistance to those in need. Their commitment and generosity exemplify the core values of our organization, and we are profoundly grateful for their invaluable contributions.

—Melanie Zavodny Vice President of CommunicationsI’ve thoroughly enjoyed traveling across the state over the past couple of months and reconnecting with our lodge officers. Through our new incentive tracking program, the Lunch & Learn series serves as an invaluable resource, providing insight into various aspects of the program. This includes details on which hours count towards incentives, clarifications on officer duties, and guidance on how to enter fraternal hours into the tracking system. Moreover, the series has proven beneficial in familiarizing newly elected lodge officers with their roles within their respective lodges. To date, we’ve had the privilege of hosting 73 officers and guests at these sessions. Additionally, we have another 30 officers who have confirmed their attendance at the upcoming session at Lodge 25, Ennis on March 24. Looking ahead, I am eager to schedule sessions in Districts One, Five, and Seven either in April or May.
Connie’s Garden 2024
Otherwise, it will stunt the plant’s growth and bear no fruit. Right now is the time to start planting her tomatoes into the ground. In the past, there has been morning frost in the first week of April. We pray that in the next couple of weeks that will not be the case this year. Sending good prayers and good vibes to our members who are farmers and gardeners.
Monday, April 15
All hours from January, February, and March are to be entered into the SPJST Gives app by the end of the day on Monday, April 15.
The 2024 Incentives Program began January 1, 2024, and will end December 31, 2024. Rather than waiting, we are asking all lodges to enter lodge community service hours, fraternal activities, social engagement activities, and fundraisers quarterly for 2024. If you have not already done so, now is the time to enter your January, February, and March activities. Do not wait! Visit https://spjst.org/gives/

assigned to active lodges located closest to their current address that is on file at the Home Office.
Officers of lodges with reassigned members will receive a roster of their membership. Please reach out to these new members, welcome them, and invite them to your next activity. Officers, please be aware these reassigned members may contact you in the coming weeks to learn about your lodge activities and next meeting date.
We rebranded the longtime member honoree program into “Milestone Members” in 2023. This year’s Milestone Members (25-year, 50-year, and 75-year) were featured in the February 26 Vestnik. Additionally, commemorative lapel pins have been reserved for our 50year and 75-year members. The Home Office is reaching out directly to these
members to inquire about their interest in receiving these pins, and upon confirmation, the pins will be sent directly to the honorees.
Lodges are highly encouraged to recognize and celebrate these members by organizing an event or ceremony that reflects the spirit of their commitment to SPJST. Whether it’s a lunch or dinner, a cake reception, or a personalized gift, your creativity is the key to making these celebrations truly special.
If your lodge has a question about the program or needs additional ideas or assistance, please contact us.
The Member Engagement Department is happy to introduce our new SPJST Gives app to our lodge officers. This app can be directly added to your homescreen on a smartphone, tablet, iPad, or computer. You will have access

The 2024 Caring Challenges are set up a little different than last year’s challenges. Each monthly challenge will follow the quarter theme that SPJST youth clubs, lodges, and members are invited to participate in. The second quarter theme for April to June is “Seeds Of Caring.”
Our April challenge is, “Nourishing
Nature!” As April unfolds, join us in nourishing nature as we make spaces that foster a caring environment for all. Contribute to the well-being of our local wildlife and celebrate the beauty of our natural surroundings. Service project ideas include making bird houses or bird feeders, planting trees or flowers, installing a bird bath, or any other way to care for nature.

You can hang these outside a window of a resident nursing facility. Plant a tree or large plants for birds to find refuge for building their nest.

Note: These are ideas and suggestions for lodges, youth clubs, and members who are wishing to make a difference in their communities and earn service hours for the incentives program. We realize that some lodges meet quarterly - you are not required to do any or all of these projects. We are hoping these ideas provide motivation and inspiration. A big THANK YOU to the lodges, youth clubs, and members who are participating in these projects.

From the Desk of
Delisle L. Doherty SPJST Vice President of Sales and MarketingSpring is just around the corner. We know April showers will bring May flowers. With that, the birds start singing, the children come out to play, and grandmas and grandpas are preparing their gardens. Everyone is getting out into the community. When lodges get into the community, people take notice. When people take notice, they want to be part of the group. When more join the group, more get active, and the group grows. To help lodges grow, we are offering a new lodge referral program for this quarter (April, May, and June).
The new program will start on April 1, and here’s how it works.
• The contest is from April 1 to June 30, 2024.
• For every referral card submitted using the QR code provided, which results in a sale, it will be entered into a virtual drawing.
• At the end of the contest period, the agent with the highest number of referrals from the lodges will win $500. Additionally, the lodge that submits the highest number of referral cards resulting in issued policies will also win $500.
• Two referral cards will be randomly drawn, with the agents and lodges who submitted them each receiving $100 (agent) and $250 (lodge), respectively.
The more cards submitted, the greater the chance of winning.
• Referral cards can be submitted to an agent directly or by scanning the QR code and submitting the information online.
• It’s important for agents to scan the QR code on every referral card received, as this allows us to track them through a downloadable spreadsheet. Cards that are not scanned will not count towards production credit.
• Payouts will be processed after the last card has undergone underwriting. Any referral from a mandatory situation will not count (mandatory membership to be part of a club). The exception being the SPJST youth club.
Invite your friends, tell your neighbors, get your kids and grandkids involved. Let those who don’t have insurance or retirement know there is a place that not only gives them what they need but gives benefits with it. We aren’t just life insurance, we are servants of society. We are friends, family, and neighbors.
My door is always open, figuratively, and literally,
Stay blessed,
Delisle L.Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing 832-232-2049

It is with great pleasure to let our SPJST members and friends know the progress of our SPJST Senior Living organization. Since our last report, we have been very fortunate to continue providing quality care for our residents in all of our facilities. We are blessed with quality administrators and a very loyal and dedicated staff to continue what has been provided from the time of our inception. This journey begin in 1958 with the establishment of our Taylor Skilled Nursing facility. Since that time, we have added facilities in Needville, an assisted living in Taylor, a skilled nursing facility in Hillje (El Campo), and our latest addition of an assisted living facility in Bee Cave, located just southwest of Austin near Lake Travis.
Although things are developing in a good way, we face challenges of being able to hire more quality staff to fulfill our needs. As a result, especially for Taylor, we have been forced to, at times, not admit new residents because of the state requirement of number of staff to residents. We have a waiting list but cannot reach the required number of staff. This is a challenge all senior living facilities are facing nationwide.
There is also a change occurring in senior living where skilled nursing is on the decline. There are only a very small number of these facilities being constructed. The direction of senior care is moving in the direction of independent living and memory care provided by assisted living facilities. The future of skilled nursing is losing ground quickly with individuals being in better health, living longer, and not requiring as much skilled care as our loved ones age.
As a result, to stay viable, our SPJST Senior Living is beginning a change of direction. We are considering moving towards an independent living facility in Taylor along with an assisted living memory care facility on the same campus. At this time, we have begun the process of designing and planning to move in this direction.
However, currently, we have postponed any further plans until our government gets things in order regarding
payments due to most facilities across the nation on Medicaid funds. They say they are backlogged and have not made any payments to us for nine months. We have been operating on private pay residents and relying on our cash reserves to continue to operate. We know or feel certain the funds will eventually be sent to us, but until this happens, we cannot proceed with the plans and reduce our reserves. Being cautious is the only way we will ever operate. Our plan is to be careful in making such a critical decision.
To be clear, we will continue to keep our existing facilities and just use diversification to increase our income.
We look forward to re-entering our goals and plans to provide for what is the trend of the 21st century. Our future looks bright with this move, and we plan to continue the quality care as in the past and stay current. We are always thinking ahead for our future. We invite everyone to stop and visit our facilities if you are in any of these areas.
Finally, since we are a 501(c)3 organization, any donations or contributions are welcome, and please know this donation is tax-deductible. Please send your donations

Congratulations to Taiton Hall on its 100th anniversary celebration! The event was held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, and included an afternoon dance. It was a spectacular celebration, and we are blessed and grateful to have this hall in our community. Thank you to all the families of our community that continue to support Taiton Community Center!
~Karen Kaspar, Lodge 30, Taiton Honorary District Six DirectorLodge 30, Hvezda Jihu, Taiton (Wharton Co.)
Lodge No. 30, Hvezda Jihu, Taiton was organized 17 September 1899. The place of organization is not known, since many of the older members are deceased and there are no records available. Longtime Secretary John F. Fiala had some of the records in his possession, but after his death none of them could be found.
In November 1923, the membership decided to build a hall. The hall was built on one acre of land donated by John Srubar and one acre by John Holub. Members of the Building Committee were J.W. Krutilek, Joe Fiala, Ed P. Fiala, Ignac Senkyrik, and John Fiala. The contractor was Stepan Gerla, and he was the only one who was paid. The members volunteered all their labor. The building site and land was located on the old road leading from the Taiton Community to El Campo, presently Hwy-71. The New Taiton Community, as it is called now, consists of a cotton gin, residences, a garage, three general stores, and a Catholic church.
The original hall has been remodeled
and added on to several times. The original structure and foundation consisted of an abandoned oil derrick, which was obtained at no cost and hauled to the site by Ignac Senkyrik with a team of mules. After a number of years, the lodge membership was small and could not maintain the building, so the New Taiton Community came up with some cash and helped and the building is, in effect, the Taiton Community Center. It is used by all local organizations which hold their meetings in the hall along with weddings, showers, dances, and various public events. Those using the building pay a slight fee, with the exception of SPJST Lodge No. 30, which uses it free and has the privilege of using it in perpetuity.
The present membership consists of 469 certificates.
Submitted by, Mrs. Lottie (J. W.) Krutilek)
Note: Lodge history information is taken from “A History of the SPJST / A Texas Chronicle, SPJST 1897-1980” compiled by former SPJST President Nick A. Morris. In 2024, Lodge 30 has 853 certificates.

State Fraternal Director Frank Horak and District Six Director Annie Vahalik and husband Philip were recognized. Twelve members and five guests were present.

Also, the motion for delegates was passed. Cathy Garcia made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction, Viola Kunetka seconded the motion. The motion passed. The treasurer’s report was read by Sharon Borak.

SPJST congratulates Brother Warren Broz of Lodge 160, San Angelo, who celebrated his 96th birthday on June 18, 2023.
Warren was born in Eureka, California, on June 18, 1927, to Lillie and Robert E. Broz. His siblings include Stanley Broz and Diana (Broz) Pelzel - both deceased.
Warren married Bernadette Moeller in 1949 in San Angelo. The couple was blessed with children Randy Broz (Clara) - both deceased, Roger Broz (Linda), Loretta Broz (Gary Reid), and Robert Broz (Phyllis Schoener); five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
his son, Roger, took over the business.
Warren then joined his son-in-law, Gary Reid, in the cattle business in Burnet County. He retired from this at age 90.
Warren always enjoyed deer and turkey hunting. He drove a bus for a few years, taking blind children to church on Sunday mornings.
Then he worked for the food pantry at St. Louis Catholic Church.
Warren recalls when he rode a Shetland pony to school every day for 10 years. Doctors told Warren that he was healthy because he always ate good and never smoked.
Warren served as a Navy Seabee from 1945 to 1946. After his service, he farmed from 1947 to 1956. Due to the drought of the 1950s, they moved to Austin. He worked with homebuilding for three years. A new Gulf Service Station was being built on Burnet Road. Warren signed up as a temporary worker to run the station. His business was booming and when the drought ended, he decided to stay in Austin. Warren added a garage next to the station and stayed for 35 years. He retired from the automotive business in 1992;
In 1972, he gave a kidney to his son, Randy. It was one of the first transplants in Austin. It was successful. Randy lived for 34 more years and died of other causes.
Warren and Bernadette celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on July 6, 2023.
Again, we congratulate Brother Warren Broz on attaining the Grand Age of 96.
Thank you, Brother Broz, for all your continued devotion to SPJST. May God bless you and your family with happiness.

Ugly Wednesday - Škaredá středa
Children finish school on Ugly Wednesday - škaredá středa - which is a good idea because they need to spend some serious time on making Easter what it should be; they spend time making Easter “beautiful” by cleaning and preparing.
Green Thursday- Zelení čtvrtek
In the evening of Green ThursdayZelení čtvrtek - every boy in the village equips himself with a wooden rattleřehtačka - which is specially made for the purpose, the boys form a group and walk through the village, rattling their rattles vigorously so the noise can be heard from afar. The meaning of the rattling is to chase away Judas. The same procedure repeats on Good Friday - Velký pátek - and one more time on White Saturday - Bílá sobota - when the boys don’t only walk through the village, but stop at every house in the morning and rattle until they’re given money which they then split between themselves. Green Thursday honors the Last Supper and is traditionally a day of fasting. No meat is consumed, and green vegetables are encouraged - spinach, cabbage, or nettle salad - to stay healthy all year round. It’s also a day to celebrate with zelene pivogreen beer!
Good Friday - Velký pátek. It is a day of mourning over the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and a day of strict fasting. In 2015, Good Friday joined Easter Monday as an official national holiday.
White Saturday - Bílá sobota. It is known as the Day of Light, symbolizing Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. It is also a day of cleaning and whitewashing. Tables are set with some Easter stuffing, a ram cake or cross bun, and Judas buns. It’s also the last day Czech boys go around their villages shaking their wooden rattles until they are given money.
Easter Sunday - Velikonoční neděle. Preparations continue for Easter Monday - Velikonoční pondělí Girls paint, color, and decorate eggs, if they haven’t done so before, and boys prepare their pomlázky! Churches and cathedrals fill with people.
Easter Monday - Pondělí velikonoční. Monday is all about folk traditions! Easter remains one of the most joyful and fun holidays on the Czech calendar. Pondělí velikonoční - is a day off, the day of the pomlázka. Pomlázka - meaning both the whip and the tradition itselfdates back to pagan times. Its original purpose and symbolic meaning was to chase away illness and bad spirits and bring health and youth for the rest of the year to everyone who is whipped with the young willow twigs.
Pomlázka
In the past, pomlázka was not only used by boys to whip girls, but also by the farmer’s wife to whip the livestock, as well as everyone in the household, including men and children. Boys would whip girls lightly on the legs and possibly douse them with water, which had a similar symbolic meaning. An Easter carol, usually asking for an egg or two, would be recited by the boy while whipping
The girl would then reward the boy with a painted egg or candy and tie a ribbon around his pomlázka. As the boys progressed through the village, their bags filled up with eggs and their pomlázky were adorned with more and more colorful ribbons.
This tradition is still largely upheld, especially in villages and small towns, although it may have lost its symbolism and romance and is now performed mainly for fun.
The reward has also changed - money and shots of plum brandy - slivovice - are often given instead of or in addition to painted eggs and candy so by early afternoon, groups of happy men can be seen staggering along the road.
All that aside, Easter still remains one of the most joyful and fun holidays on the Czech calendar.

Dear Vestnik Readers,
It is March. Spring and Easter are almost here! Spring break is finally here though. I’m so happy that I don’t have to go to school for a week. I can’t wait for spring so it can bring warmer temperatures. I do not like this cold that we have had recently.
Easter will be here soon. That will be fun. I can’t wait to eat all the good food that we will have.
Coming up is our school field trip. I
can’t wait. We will get to go to the Mayborn Museum. We will also get to miss a whole day of school.
The solar eclipse will be here soon, too. That will be fun because it will look like it is night in the middle of the day, and we get the day off of school. Have a happy Easter!

Spring break is here so that means that we get one week off from school! This year we get to go to our grandparents’ house.
Soccer started back up, and basketball ended. We won our last game 14 to 7. We only lost one game!
Well, I’m done typing so bye now. But don’t worry, my next letter will be in April for you to look forward to.
Andrew Ordogne, age 8 —SPJST—Lodge 30, Taiton youth group kicked off spring break weekend on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the St. John’s Catholic Church spring picnic. Our youth ran the cakewalk where all proceeds benefit the Altar Society and its scholarship fund. The youth also assisted in several activities, such as making plates and working games for children as well as the raffle. It’s always so much fun to take part in community activities and share what SPJST youth have to offer.
Fraternally,

✦ Easter baskets have special symbolism: The woven treat containers represent birds’ nests and new life, especially when filled to the brim with eggs. Plus, they're a pretty utilitarian way to gather those goodies on your Easter egg hunt.
✦ Pastel colors carry religious meaning: From baby blues to soft pinks and mint greens, Easter is shrouded in pastel colors, and each color has a different religious meaning. White represents light, triumph, and glory. Violet represents penance, power, and royalty. Pink represents joy and love. Green represents hope and eternal life. Lastly, red represents sacrifice, blood, and martyrdom.
✦ Polish legends say the Virgin Mary painted eggs with her tears: In Poland, they have a slightly different version of how the tradition of dyeing Easter eggs came to be, though it still involves Mary Magdalene. Polish folklore says the Virgin Mary offered eggs to the soldiers guarding Christ on the cross, and as she begged for their mercy, her tears dropped and dots of color appeared on the eggs.
✦ In Finland, children dress up as witches on Easter Sunday: In Finland, children celebrate Easter very differently than they do in America. A popular tradition sees children dress up like
On Saturday, February 17, 2024, SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club met to polka dance, enjoy the Czech food, and also make valentines for the troops inviting KJT youth to participate. Everyone had a great time that day. We hope to see you all at our Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 30 at Martinek Homeplace at 2 p.m. —Rita Holland, Youth Leader
witches and go door-to-door in search of chocolate eggs and treats on Easter Sunday - similar to Halloween in the U.S. Many Finnish people even burn bonfires as a Nordic tradition to ward ward off witches during Holy Week.
✦ Before Easter baskets children would put eggs in a hat filled with straw: German settlers that immigrated to the U.S. in the 1700s brought a new Easter tradition. The night before Easter, children would fill their bonnets with hay, and in
the morning, they would be overflowing with brightly colored eggs.
✦ Easter eggs have medieval origins: During medieval times, a very different game was using eggs. A priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choir boys, he would continue to toss it to his peers, and whoever was holding the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and got to keep it.
✦ Easter lilies are a relatively new tradition: These beautiful blooms first arrived in England in the late 18th century. The United States caught onto the trend after World War I. The transition from dormant bulbs to delicate flowers brings to mind hope and rebirth, two important themes of the Easter celebration.
✦ There’s a reason you probably eat ham for Easter dinner: Historically, most early Easter celebrants would have eaten lamb for this special occasion since the holiday has its roots in Jewish Passover. But these days, many American Easter dinners now feature ham instead, because of the timing of the holiday. Years ago, hams cured over the winter months, and by spring, the meat would have been ready to serve. Perfect timing for Easter dinner! —SPJST—

Julius H. Jalufka, Jr. passed away at the age of 62 on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
He is survived by sisters Kathryn Jalufka and Judy Jalufka, both of Houston; and uncle Erwin Jalufka of Engle.
Visitation was Monday, March 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Heights Funeral Home with the rosary being recited at 7 p.m. The funeral service was held the following morning at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment followed at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery.
Julius graduated from the University of Houston in 1986 with a degree in electrical engineering. After graduation, he began his professional career with Court Record Research, Inc. He worked there for 37 years until he retired in 2023 but continued to work from home as a consultant as needed.
Julius was a lifelong member of Christ the King Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.
Starting at an early age, he developed an affinity for music and loved to listen to the Billboard top 40 every week and keep track of the charts. He could tell you the year any song was released, and especially loved the 70s with 1972 being his all-time favorite year. Julius was also an avid sports fan. He loved the Houston Cougars, Texans, and especially the Astros. You could ask him anything about a particular football or baseball player, and he could tell you where they went to school, when they were drafted, and what teams they had played with. He loved nature and watching things grow. A cat person from childhood, he recently developed a great fondness for the two newest members of the family, pups Angus and Lucky, also known as “the boys,” and even tolerated big sis, Lola. Julius was a great person of few words with a quiet nature, but when you friended him, you had a friend for life.
He was preceded in death by parents Julius H. Jalufka, Sr. and Angeline M. Jalufka; and brother John P. Jalufka.
Pallbearers were Chris Wathen, Leo Villegas, Gordon Hanna, Alex Carmelo, Frankie Dial, Julien Owen, and Ross Gauld. Honorary pallbearers were RB McEntire, Milton Marek, Edward Marek, and Paul Marek.
He will be truly missed by all, but especially by his sisters, whom he has lived with for the past five years. May his soul rest in peace.

She loved having her family together which always included fun, food, and mostly fellowship. Her rabbit cakes at Easter for each of the grandkids and “Mimi’s meat” invoke special memories. She was an awesome cook and loved sharing with others. Her banana pudding and cherry cream pie and strudel were particular favorites.
JoAnn Matus, age 85, of West, Texas, passed away late Wednesday afternoon, March 6, 2024, at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital in Waco.
Dallia Mae Paschall Junek of Snook, Texas, was greeted by her Savior on Friday, February 9, 2024. Her faithfulness to her God and Savior was an example to all who knew her. She was loved by many for her infectious laugh, humor, and sweetness. She will be greatly missed.
Visitation was Friday, March 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. at Snook Brethren Church on Saturday, March 2. Interment followed at Snook Cemetery.
Dallia entered this world on November 9, 1929, in Lyons as a preemie whose first bed was a shoebox by the wood burning stove. Her parents were Addie Monroe Paschall and Wyatt Paschall, and she grew up in Somerville. When her dad joined the United States Navy during World War II, she and her mom joined him in California for a short time. They moved to Hempstead, Texas, her senior year, where Dallia then graduated from Hempstead High School.
Dallia met Clarence while attending a dance in Deanville. After that first dance, they danced together the rest of the night and the rest of their lives. They were married on September 18, 1947.
Dallia Mae was a loving and devoted wife to her late husband, Clarence Lee; a loving mother to Clarence, Roland,
Dallia’s favorite pastime was music – singing, playing the organ, piano, accordion, and listening to polkas on Czech Polka Time. Her plan was to continue an education in music, but her first dance with Clarence sent her along a different path. Dallia sang at many weddings, funerals, and revival services over the years. For years, she sang in the church choir and played the organ. Dallia and Audrey Hejl were known as the “Dynamic Duo”! Dallia was active in church functions with her children and a sponsor in the BYF. She volunteered as a cook for EBC and had as much fun as the campers singing and participating in skits. One of her favorite projects with the mission group was making bandages to send overseas. Dallia was also active in school functions and the PTA.
Dallia was an active member of the Somerville chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star, served as Worthy Matron several times, and loved the fellowship of the organization. She loved needlework as well as patching Clarence and her favorite son-in-law’s jeans and shirts. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends were all recipients of quilt hangings, crocheted stockings, afghans, and other small projects. Her plethora of photo albums always brought great joy and rekindled memories of so many fun times.
Dallia was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Clarence; her parents; and three infant sisters.
Survivors include daughter Karen (JD) Schovajsa; sons Roland and Clarence W. Junek; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center’s popular “Night at the Museum” series returns to Temple for its second season in 2024, commencing with the “Solar Eclipse Howdy Party” on Thursday, April 4. The event will be held at the SPJST Home Office located at 520 North Main Street from 5:30 until 8 p.m.
“A complete solar eclipse is a rare occurrence and for many of us will be a once-in-a-lifetime, awe-inspiring experience,” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “Taking this to heart, the SPJST Foundation, which is coordinating the party, wanted to make this a community event that is both fun and educational. That’s where we got the idea of throwing the ‘Solar Eclipse Howdy Party’!”
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on the Earth’s surface. It’s a heavenly spectacle that has fascinated humans for centuries, with the earliest recorded solar eclipse dating back to 2137 BC in ancient China.
So, what does the solar eclipse have to do with Czech history? “That’s easy,” says Vanicek. “All of us – regardless of where our ancestors came from share a common interest in the world in which we live. The April 8 eclipse belongs to all of us! The Solar Eclipse Howdy Party is a chance for everyone to get ready before the main event arrives on Monday, April 8!”
Howdy Party attendees will enjoy a mix of country-western and polka music from 6 until 7:30 p.m. by the trio of Jerry Haisler and Friends. The “Crash Course in Eclipse Education” follows at

—SPJST—Temple’s Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center continues to attract visitors from around the state and around the world. Over the years, one of the Museum’s most faithful visitors has been Father Stephen Nesrsta, pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Corn Hill and seldom – if ever – is he alone. Most recently, Fr. Stephen was accompanied by Czech clergymen Deacon Josef Kvapilik of Kroměříž and Fr. Tomáš Zámečník of Brno.
Czech Center Museum Houston (CCMH) presents an exhibit CZECHS COLLECTED: Czech and Slovak photographers at FotoFest, 1990 – present. CZECHS COLLECTED is an exhibition featuring the works of Czech and Slovak photographers who have presented at FotoFest since 1990.
The Czech Republic and Slovakia are two small but mighty countries uniquely located in the heart of Europe. Brno, the largest city in the Eastern part of the Czech Republic, and where four of the artists in the exhibition live, was in the
9th and 10th century the center of the Great Moravian Empire. Prague, where the other three photographers work and live, was on two occasions the seat of the Great Roman Emperor. Science, art, and innovation have always thrived in the rich history of these places, and this exhibition of Czech and Slovak photography gives you an exclusive, small peek into the souls of their people from Houston’s private collections and from FotoFest archives. Exhibit runs now through April 16, 2024.

Jeannine Koll —SPJST—Czech Bishops’ Conference recognizes Fr. Stephen Nesrsta for his many years of supporting Czech, Moravian clergy for advanced degrees by obtaining research materials that are not available in their country. Father Nesrsta also proofreads letters written in English for the Czech priests.
He said he has enjoyed helping the priests and introducing them to Central Texas, and he plans to continue in the years to come.
In 2023, Fr. Stephen, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco, received the Memorial Medal from the Czech Bishops’ Conference for his many years of support to Czech and Moravian deacons and priests.
Since 1998, Father Nesrsta has welcomed 68 Czech and Moravian clergy to Texas to learn about the U.S. The men arrive in the summer and usually stay for a few weeks.
“The program helps the deacons improve their English-speaking skills, get an experience of the Catholic Church in the United States, to visit Czech/Moravian settlements in Texas and learn their history, and to get a better view of the U.S.,” Father Nesrsta said.
He also helps priests in the Czech Republic as they continue their studies
“I am very appreciative of my Moravian heritage,” says Fr. Stephen. “I see this program as a way of giving back to the land and people from where my family came.”
Since January 2023, Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center has been operating under the supervision of the SPJST Foundation. The Foundation was established by SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance in 2012 as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit corporation to assist projects that celebrate the cherished traditions, customers, heritage, and language of SPJST’s Czech forefathers. The Museum is located at 119 West French Street. Its hours of operation are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Groups that would like to schedule visits during other times are encouraged to contact Museum Administrator Kenny Lange at 254-718-4407 or by email klange@spjst.com.
