This is a letter written to Lillian in approximately 1986 by the late Emma (Bartos) Fojtik of Lodge 81, Needville.
In 1921, we got married with a small reception and left on our honeymoon the day after Christmas. The following October, we were blessed with a sweet little boy. Three years later, another little boy came. I was determined to give them all I was denied in my childhood. Eight years drifted by, and the work got me down. I became sick with heart trouble. dered rest which was not my style, but by then, Edmond started school. My husband never did any housework before so there was nothing to do, but slow down and limit my work and take rest often which brought me complete recovery. We moved to Damon in 1931, and on Thanksgiving Day, Calvin came down with diptheria. He spent a week in the hospital and was a very sick baby. When we brought him in, the doctor pronounced him gone, but I pleaded with him to give him a chance. The doctor turned to me and said will you pay for it if it fails? What made me say I would, only you whom has had such a decision to make could understand, for we were poor as a church mouse. Well, the little darling
suffered terribly, but survived and finally the day came to take him home. I told the doctor, “See, you would have let him die and he made it!” He said, “But he won’t be right. He will suffer consequences due to the seriousness of his illness.” I took the blame on myself for begging the doctor to perform the operation and got sick. As days went by, he began to notice when we spoke. I asked him if he loved me as his answer had always been, “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” His big, blue eyes seemed to speak, but no voice came out. Finally, one day he squealed out “peck” then and there I knew he would talk, but it took some time. He never gained for one year although it had no effect on his health. He is doing

fine at 60. Another year drifted by with more rugged road ahead. In the time of the depression, on one Saturday morning on August 13, 1932, sultry heat began followed by sharp, gusty wind and rain. The blustering weather looked very stormy. The clouds chased one after another from east to west from the Gulf of Mexico. We did finish the first bale of cotton, and he took it to the gin. During the afternoon, I washed the clothes and cleaned the house as the next day we would celebrate my 30th birthday. Louis came in from the gin and said a radio message came in that a tropical hurricane was due at 7 p.m. giving us only an hour to

What a wonderful surprise to meet longtime SPJST member
Willie Zahirniak of Lodge 54, West at Slovacek’s in West during Westfest weekend. Mr. Willie asked me if I was going to Westfest, and I told him to watch for our SPJST Floats in the parade. We then established our SPJST connection as he and his family are proud SPJST members. The home of Willie and his wife Beulah was destroyed in the West Fertilizer Plant Explosion in 2013. Thanks to Willie for his membership in SPJST and for his warm hospitality on my visit. SPJST was well represented at Westfest which was held September 4 to 6. We will include photos from the event in next week’s Vestnik. Last Week’s Vestnik Last week’s September 9 Vestnik included the Special Structure Committee’s proposed by-law recommendations for the 2016 SPJST Convention. I hope you had a change to read the issue. I enjoyed hearing from several of our readers saying they read it from cover to cover. If you still have the issue, please save it. Who knows - we may have a little contest or question-and-answer find for that Vestnik soon! It is a very important issue that we are asking and encouraging all members to read, and we want your feedback, too.

Endowed Scholarships SPJST Endowed Scholarships have been established in the names of Otto Hanus (two scholarships), Myles Marek, Ben and Martha Trcalek, Ernest Wentrcek, Denisse Wuensche, Gladys Yates, SPJST District Six, Johnnie Krizan, and Frank Klinkovsky, Sr. All of these— except for the Ernest Wentrcek, Johnnie Krizan, and Frank Klinkovsky, Sr.—are fully endowed meaning that scholarships will be presented annually. A total of $20,000 is needed to fully endow a scholarship. Amounts needed to fully endow the three scholarships are: Ernest Wentrcek - $948 Johnnie Krizan - $3,455 Frank Klinkovsky, Sr. - $8,072 If you wish to donate to any of these memorial scholarships, please designate which scholarship and mail your donation to SPJST, PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. District Four Fall Fun Day Saturday, October 3 in Abilene
The District Four Fall Fun Day and Youth Outing will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015. The youth will go to Abilene Zoo at 1 p.m. which is located at 2070 Zoo Lane in Abilene. Registration for Fall Fun Day will begin at 4 p.m. The evening meal begins at 5:30 p.m. The location will be Lytle Land and Cattle Company at 1150 East South 11th in Abilene. A Christmas ornament contest for all youth club members will be held at the meal. Please invite all lodge members, and please RSVP by September 23. We

Lodge Incentive Guidelines
The 2015 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:
1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.
To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:
1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program. 2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.
3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

Lodge 9, Snook reports on September meeting
The September 2, 2015, meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 6:58 p.m. Janice Victorick led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes from the August meeting were read and approved. Hall manager’s, treasurer’s, FAC’s, and statewide reports were given. Loree Lewis gave the youth club report. The youth made 60 dozen kolaches and rolls for the country store at the Firemen’s Barbecue. They will meet at 3:30 p.m. at the cemetery on September 13 for a clean-up. There will be a District One activity after the Burleson County Fair Parade on Saturday, September 19. We had several new applicants – Daniel Banda, Leslie Banda, Natalie Banda, Valeria Banda, and Christian Banda. Motion passed to accept the new members. Welcome, new members. Motions were passed to pay Chooch Macik for trimming trees and to reimburse the Snook Volunteer Fire Department for hall use for all but electricity usage. Mrs. Lydia Faust presented a cer-

Lodge 17, New Tabor Sales Agent Susan Skrabanek and her cousin Petr Masař of Leskovec, in the Zlín Region, Moravia, Czech Republic, visited the SPJST Home Office last week. The two are related through Susan’s grandfather, who immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi members enjoy getaway
Lodge 79, Corpus Christi enjoyed a potluck meal on August 16, 2015. The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for deceased members Elva Mungia and Leo B. Longoria. On the sick list were Treasurer Frank Sacky and Susan Sacky. Susan is improving after receiving treatments. We wish them well. All officers were present except for Treasurer Frank Sacky and Youth Leader Gerilyn Donnell. We had 18 members and guests in attendance. The July minutes were read by Secretary Virginia Rebecek, and they were approved. There was no financial report due to the absence of Treasurer Frank Sacky. Under communications, Secretary Virginia Rebecek read two death claims. She also read a thank you note from Brock Donnell for receiving a pen from our lodge. FAC report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He stated the Corpus Christi Weekend Getaway was a huge success. Our kolache and buchtas were a hit. President Brian Vanicek presented President Mark Rebecek and Secretary Virginia Rebecek a plaque thanking Lodge 79 for hosting the Weekend Getaway for the past nine years. Lodge 35, Elk: Flag Donated to Cemetery
A United States of America flag has been generously donated to the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association. It was donated by the Jack Levy Family and was a casket cover for Jack’s brother Mike Levy of Detroit, Michigan. Jack is a social member at SPJST Lodge 35, Elk. The flag will be proudly flown over the cemetery on all designated flag days. The lodge officers, members, and guests wish to say a heartfelt thank you to the Jack Levy Family for their kindness.

Lodge 191, Lufkin plans Sept. 18 dance
I hope everyone had a good and safe Labor Day weekend. The dance crowd just keeps getting better and better. Glenn Lenderman and Friends did an excellent job as usual. He also had Chris Powell on drums and George Scogin on saxophone. The theme Hot Dogs and Ice Cream was a great success. There was enough hot dog makings to feed everyone including the ones that were not there. Thanks to everyone that brought food and ice cream. Everyone enjoyed all of the food. Dance—Friday, September 18 The band for the September dance will be Linda Kaye and the Kool Katz. Mark it on your calendar, phone, forehead, refrigerator, or anywhere else that you make notes on to remember to come to the dance. If you have not heard this band before, you will be in for a great time. The dance starts at 7 to 10 p.m., and the cost is $6 for members and $7 for guests. The theme will be Come Join the Circus. There is no special theme for the food so just bring a covered dish for the food table. Everyone enjoys food at a dance. You work up a good appetite dancing, and dancing is good exercise for your body. If you would like to host a dance either decorating, working in the snack bar or ticket booth, please call Ruth Welch at 936-639-6971. She will be glad to set you up. Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
The Ladies Circle meeting of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was called to order on August 11, 2015, with 50 members including the guys and a couple of guests attending. The dress of the day was an Island theme, and everyone looked lovely. President Cathy Simmank led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and she warmly welcomed visitors Doris Merlick Mobley and Jeanette Tesar who joined our group as a new member. The meeting proceeded with Theretta Praslicka’s reading of “House of Mirrors,” a prayer, and business as usual. As Sunshine Chairman, Margaret Laymance sent cards to Catherine Ann Davis on her recent surgery and a sympathy card to Doris Overstreet on the loss of Bill Campbell, her very dear friend. Please remember them in your prayers as they go through these difficult times in their lives. Sherrie Kubala Watkins shared good news of her mother Helen. She reported that on her recent visit to see her mom, she was better than she had been in a long time. thank them for their work in the kitchen. Lunch could not have happened without them. Big “happy’s” went out to Betty Krenek, Evelyn Scaff, Mary Ann Adcock, Janice Record, and yours truly. Later, “the song” was sung, and this wonderful group of “ladies” had their picture taken. Of course, the next event on everyone’s mind are Czech heritage festivities. We encourage you to set aside the afternoon and evening of Saturday, September 19 for revisiting the Czech “way” of getting together. There will be visiting with longtime friends, food, and dancing so join us for the celebration. I am certain there will be some silliness along the way as well. Once again, there were some lovely door prizes, a show-and-tell session, and the blessing for lunch. Bingo followed, and it was a great meeting. We really missed all of you who were not there. The Swiss Alp-Washington Country School reunion is Thursday, October 8, 2015, at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant at Highway 77 and I-10 in Schulenburg, Texas. Peace is not Freedom

In 1994, I became aware of the difference between peace and freedom. I was privileged to take part in a Sokol Slet (exhibition) in Prague in the Czech Republic. Sokol (meaning “falcon”), an international gymnastic organization, originated there in 1862, based on the Greek Olympics with competitions and exhibitions. It teaches mental discipline through physical discipline and stands for the democratic rights of the individual. Due to their philosophy, the organization was taken over by the Germans during World War II, and their leaders were either killed or imprisoned. After the fall of Hitler, they were left to the mercy of the Russian occupation. Finally, they had peace, but it was at the business end of Russian machine guns and pistols. A 10 o’clock curfew was issued. If you were found outside after that time, you would be shot! As we approached the city by bus, we could see the remains of war. Looking out the window, I could see Czech men driving Russian trucks in the fields with men behind them walking with hand plows digging up the

fields. Abandoned military equipment was utilized to start a new life. Our event began with a mammoth parade down the streets of Prague. People lined the streets, and many were hanging out windows wearing old Sokol uniforms or any remnants of ones they had saved. The band was loud and patriotic. Teams from many countries including our past enemies, Russia and Germany, all wearing Sokol gymnastic uniforms marched behind color guards carrying flags representing their countries. Electricity filled the air. Our Sokol president, Jerry Milan, gave us small American
flags to hand out to the crowd. Old women would run up and take one and place it to their heart crying. They reached out to touch us Americans because they knew our country had delivered them from Communism. Along with the crowd, we were marching and bawling. The next day, we wandered the streets of Prague and I came upon a huge wall - about 120 feet long - with a mural painted on it. It had an oval in the center with the remains of a person’s face and words written the length of the building. When I returned to the hotel, I visited the gift
shop to buy some postcards and saw one of the murals in its original state. It was a portrait of John Lennon with words of his peace song. The shopkeeper explained the story: Three young college students decided to rise up against the Communists. They defied the curfew, snuck out, and painted the mural on the wall. The next day they were found and shot dead in front of the image of Lennon and their bodies left to rot as a warning not to protest against the Communist occupation. The wall became a symbol of peace to the people of Prague, and pieces of it were chinked off as pre-

I returned to the scene and found a piece on the ground, which I have along with the postcard as a reminder to know the difference between peace and freedom and how lucky we are to have both because our soldiers fought and died for it. After the fall of Communism, the Sokol organization finally had their gyms and stadiums returned. The first day we rode the bus to the stadium to practice. The people on the bus were engulfed in a programmed dead silence; children sat frozen, staring ahead. B.J. Cleveland, one of our Sokol members, who was the artistic director of the Arlington Theatre, broke the silence and started singing a Czech song that we all learned at camp. We all joined in. B.J ran up and down in the aisle singing to them encouraging them to sing. First, their mouths began to move, but nothing came out. Finally, songs came forth, at first barely audible, then louder and louder accompanied with bright eyes and wide smiles. The bus rocked with joy. When we got off at the stadium, they waved and hollered at us from the bus singing. Joy arose from their newfound freedom. The 1994 Sokol Slet, attended by the president of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, was held at Strahovste Stadium, the largest stadium in the world, which is two football fields long and had 10 Olympic tennis courts across the end. Thunderous bells recorded from the St. Vitis Cathedral rang out to announce of the event. As thousands of Sokol gymnasts marched onto the field in their units preceded by men carrying their flags, excitement filled the air. Mass calisthenics, beautiful rhythmic exercises, were performed to music by Sokols from toddlers to seniors, that being the Old Guard, which included our Texas group. In awesome conclusion, 30 skydivers landed on the field. As we marched off, the crowd was silent. They didn’t move. They did not want this recreation of wonderful memories to end. Some of us celebrated the Fourth of July by going to a very small pub. It was dead silent. After a bit, B. J. began singing a camp song again, and we joined in. Finally, everyone was singing. Passersby heard the joy and entered. They came and came, until we were packed like sardines and we were even standing on the bar! One man ran home and got his accordion, and the party lasted until the wee hours of the morning. The solemn bar became a place of joy. As we walked back to the hotel, people were peace-

coming from America who saved them. From her clothing, I could see that she was a victim of the ravages of war. Overwhelmed by her show of appreciation, I crammed all of the Czech money I had left into the neck of her dress, hopped on the bus and took my seat in the back. I watched out the back window and saw the lady take the money from her dress and cry. The bus took off, and the old lady ran as hard as she could and chased the bus blowing me kisses until we were out of sight. Be a Friend to a Caregiver by Georgia Fitzhugh Lodge 25, Ennis
Maybe you know a caregiver and you would like to help them in some way. But you wonder what you should say, and what you should do in this situation. You think, “I don’t want to bother them, or be in the way, but I would like to visit with her for a little while.” She always says that everything is okay, but couldn’t she use a little help? I know that she probably misses being available to be with friends, to do what she used to do. I’ll bet she’s depressed about that. Things are not the same, and they never will be. Maybe I should call her today. Or, maybe I should just mind my own business.” So what does a caregiver’s friend do? If a caregiver could talk to her/his friends who want to help, here are seven things that a caregiver might say: 1. Don’t avoid me. Be the friend you have always been. Come on over, but call before you come because sometimes we’re out for appointments, or we’re busy around here. It

can get lonely here with just us. And sometimes it gets boring. No, it’s not the same, but I’m still your friend.
2. When you visit me at home, don’t judge me or pity me. I am doing the best I can at this work. You don’t have to feel sorry for me either. I am here doing this work because I am doing it for one I love. You don’t have to fix or improve the situation. This is life as it is, and it is not so bad. Just be a companion. The time I spend as a caregiver may be long, or it may be brief, but it will pass. Talk, laugh, share, and listen. That’s all.
3. Invite my family members to join in your activities. Take my kids and teens out with your family members when you go to the park or to the movies. They need a break. Could you drive them somewhere when I can’t get away to do that? That really would help me. Being isolated at home is probably the most inconvenient and wearisome part of the caregiving experience for all of my family members.
4. Help me keep in touch with everyone we both know. Tell them to call and send cards or visit. I am still interested in being a part of their lives. I still care about them and think about them often. My past experiences and memories are important to me. So is my future, and someday I will be able to take up the work and pastimes I once had.
5. What you could bring with you: a cheerful, smiling face, magazines or books we might like to read, a DVD movie or music we might like, food in disposable containers, flowers, old photos to talk about, a funny story. Just

6. Offer to do a quick chore: take the trash can out, wash my car, bring some groceries, water the house plants, sweep the porch, change a burned-out light bulb, do some pet care for me. You don’t know how much it will mean to us to have a few minutes to rest instead of tending to these chores.

Lodge 187, Round Rock Meets at Gatti Land
Our August meeting was an exciting one. We had the meeting at Gatti Land in Round Rock since our lodge was being rented out at the time. We had several short business discussions while the youth played. Then we all enjoyed pizza, pastas, and salads.

prepare for the blow. We both got busy and propped the building which served as turkey house and blacksmith shop with 12 by 12 sills. We got out of the house without any supper. We endured plenty of fear as a tornado broke loose and took the house and barn with all our belongings. It left us with only empty stomachs. What a tornado can do is a mystery. So much is unbelievable. We had a round table with four screwed legs, but when we found the table a half a mile away, each leg was unscrewed and scattered apart - the same way with the recliner. The double barrel shotgun had a shingle nail drove in the steel barrel. The sewing machine was opened up in the windmill tower. After the tragedy, it rained so much that the mosquitos were so bad, and we had no place to live. There were no neighbors, and we were unknown here since we just moved from Needville to a ranch in open space. After the tragic night, we walked two miles to some people who happened to have a roof on their house. After breakfast that day, we walked back to see what could be done. We picked up enough shingles from the house and barn scattered all over the pasture to reshingle the turkey house and blacksmith shop where we were to make our home. We found a soaked up mattress and laid it on the roosts after cleaning the dirt floor. I cooked on the forge in the Blacksmith Shop for six months until we got to move to another house. We lost all our belongings in the field. Fifty bales of cotton opened up
in the field. We had no insurance. All our mules and cows died of charbon. We were at a dead end yet faith smiled at us. With spirits high, we survived. Four years has elapsed, and this was August 3, 1936. Our 13-year-old son Edmond has been taken to Rosenberg hospital by Dr. Weeks for a ruptured appendix, which, due to their neglect, turned into six operations (locked bowels and more). He had a four-month stay in the hospital, and I was at his bedside day and night nursing him all those months. My husband was sending 10-year-old Calvin to school and tending the farm. We were poor, had no car, but we had faith and hopes. Our hospital bill was high so we had to borrow the money, but we managed nicely. We were just glad that he was alive. That was all that mattered. With God’s help, his health was restored. The next year, we made a good crop. We paid most of our bills, but had to work all the harder. On August 4, 1941, Edmond volunteered into the United States Army. He chose the Panama Canal Zone where he served over three years. He came out a fine looking soldier boy. Calvin was then inducted into the service. He went to Okinawa and Korea where he served three years. My husband worked at the Freeport Defense Plant while I was on the homefront tending the farm. Now, we have both lost our parents, which left us nice nest eggs, and fortune smiles at us. We have a comfortable home - no mansion, but who needs one. We are married over 65 years in blissful happiness with two good sons, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, Our resting place is here at Damon Catholic Cemetery, but when we are

Expression of Sympathy
The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 35, Elk would like to send our condolences to the family of ALBERT BANIK. He passed away at the age of 82 years on Saturday, August 29, 2015, at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco. He had lived in West, Texas. A rosary was recited at 6 p.m., Thursday, September 3 at AderAlbert Banik hold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 4 with the Reverend Paul Hudson as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Albert was born November 15, 1932, in West, the son of Ernest and Fena (Schronk) Banik. He attended the old Gerald School, West High School, and TSTC. Albert served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War as a member of the 1st Armored Infantry Division. On November 5, 1955, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Rauschuber in Tours. Albert worked for General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco for over 32 years before retiring in 1987. He then worked for Chief Auto Parts and Hillcrest Hospital, both in Waco. Albert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption. He was a very active member at SPJST Lodge 35, Elk where he served as secretary over 20 years and hall manager for 10 years. He also served as District Three President. He was a member of American Legion Post 478 in West. Albert enjoyed polka music, country and western music, dancing, and gardening. He especially loved spending time with his family. Albert was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rosemary on December 9, 2002; brothers Robert Banik, Otto Banik, and Ernest Banik; and sisters Erna Archerd, Bertha Schultz, Ellen Richter, and Olga Richter. Survivors include daughters Cyndy Dunlap and husband Joe, Denise Mc-
Cauley and husband Mike, and Charlotte Carlisle; sons Eddie Banik and Marilyn and Darrin Banik and wife Torie; grandchildren Cody McCauley, Casie McCauley, Whitney Ward and husband Jeff, Derek Banik and wife Sarah, Taylor Dunlap, Bailey Rose Carlisle, Grace Banik, and William Banik; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In Memory of Edwin Cerny
Edwin Milton Cerny, 75, passed away August 27, 2015, after a determined battle with cancer. Visitation was Saturday, August 29 starting at 5 p.m. with a rosary service beginning at 6 p.m. at Taylor Bros. A funeral mass was held on Sunday, August 30 at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City with Father Greg Korenek officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Stewart Reynal, Jeff Pratt, Dave Falb, Israel DeLaRosa, Jr, Jason Reynal, Shane Reynal, Leon Garza, and Alex Orta served as pallbearers. Edwin was born on March 22, 1940, to the late Adolph and Della Mary Zernicek Cerny. Together, Edwin and his wife Jeroline raised five children and took pride in their accomplishments. An avid mechanic, he owned his own auto shop and later farmed for many years. He also worked for Rail Serve at Lyondell Chemicals until his retirement. His strong work ethic and perseverance were passed down to each of his descendants. He was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City, and he loved fishing, crabbing, hunting, and just spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed making the best barbecue in Texas for family gatherings, celebrating his family’s Czech heritage, and watching Western movies. He is survived by his loving wife of

Leo Mynarcik, age 88, of West, Texas, passed away early Friday morning, August 28, 2015, at Town Hall Estates in Hillsboro. A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Monday, August 31 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption Leo Mynarcik with Reverend Paul Hudson as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Leo was born November 15, 1926, near Ross, the son of Anton and Bessie (Steinocher) Mynarcik. He attended school in Ross. Leo served his country with the United States Army during World War II. On January 27, 1948, he was united in marriage to Rosalie Petter in Abbott. Rosalie preceded him in death on April 29, 2010. Leo was a route salesman and later a district manager for Ben E. Keith Distributing Company in Dallas for 22 years before retiring in 1980. After he retired, he worked as a warehouse and delivery man for Pool Quip McNeme, Inc. until retiring again in 1994. They returned to West in 1997. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Leo was also a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West; KJT Society

No. 31; VFW Post No. 4819; and American Legion Post. He enjoyed playing the accordion, mowing yards, gardening, and tinkering with anything mechanical. Betty Pareya, age 83, of West, Texas, passed away early Monday afternoon, August 24, 2015, at Providence Hospital in Waco. A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 27 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption with Reverend Paul Betty Pareya Hudson and Reverend Will Straten as celebrants. Betty was born May 4, 1932, in Prairie Hill, the daughter of Frances (Cvikel) and Adolph “A.P.” Matus, Sr. She attended Waco High School and graduated from Vogue Beauty School in 1958. On June 27, 1950, she was united in marriage to W. F. “Boiley” Pareya in West. Boiley preceded her in death on October 21, 2003. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 829 and SPJST Lodge 54, West. Betty enjoyed cooking, reading, and traveling. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents; brother A.P. Matus, Jr.; and sisters Hattie Griffin, Louise Johnson, Frances Wills, and Mary Joe Marek. In Memory of George Reznik
George John Reznik, age 86, beloved father, grandfather and greatgrandfather passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2015. He was born February 22, 1929, to John and Francis Reznik in Ennis, Texas. He was a first gener- George Reznik ation Texan and American and proud of his immigrant parents Czech-Moravian heritage. George was the youngest of four siblings - Cecilia Vasek, Wesley Reznik, Alphonse Reznik, and Raymond Reznik, all deceased. The Reznik family moved to Littlefield in 1930, laying roots for a successful farming legacy in the Texas Panhandle. The family returned to Ennis with the three youngest sons in 1940. George graduated from St. John’s High School in Ennis in 1945. George married Dorothy on October 7, 1950. He served in the 2nd Infantry during the Korean War, quickly rising to the rank of Sergeant. On his return stateside, he was employed by Doran Chevrolet, where he became a pioneer in the automotive air conditioning repair industry, retiring in 1993. He was an avid gardener and handyman and delighted in sharing tomatoes with friends and neighbors. He was an active and valued member of many fraternal organizations including SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas; Dallas Ennis Fraternal Council; Czech Heritage Cultural Society; KJT Lodge 111; WFLA Lodge 401, and a 3rd Degree Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 799. He was a founding member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Parish in Dallas. George was preceded in death by wife Dorothy Rose. He is survived by daughters Georgia Johnson and Susan McKee; and sons David and Jonathan; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous Godchildren; and countless friends and colleagues. George will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he touched. Visitation was Thursday, August 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home Chapel. On September 21, 1940, she was united in marriage to Joseph J. Sebik in Hillsboro. Joseph preceded her in death on February 4, 1977. Stacy was homemaker and also worked in the cafeteria for St. Mary’s School in Waco and at Huck and Buck Manufacturing in Waco. Stacy was a very faithful member of St. Louis Catholic Church. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West; KJZT Society No. 11; and the RVOS lodge. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and socializing. She especially loved spending time with her granddaughter. Stacy was also preceded in death by her parents; and sisters Christine and Julia Retchek. Survivors include son Joe J. Sebik Jr. and wife Kim of Waco; granddaughter Haley Jo Sebik; special friend Della Holick; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. After graduation, he attended the University of North Texas and graduated with a bachelor of business administration degree. He has worked at the City of Dallas Public Library System for the last 27 years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco. At age 10, Gerald became fascinated with sports’ statistics and that hobby led him to a part-time job with the Dallas Morning News where he worked the last 10 years in the sports department. Even though Gerald graduated from another university, he has always attended Baylor athletic events as an avid fan. Gerald was a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He is preceded in death by his father Robert Schroeder, Jr.; sister Marcia Schroeder Chisholm; and infant niece Kerrie Rene Chisholm. Gerald is survived by mother June Schroeder; brother Timothy Schroeder and wife Kathy Schroeder; and nieces Kimberly and Christina Schroeder. Henry Robert Sralla, lifelong resident of Floresville, Texas, entered eternal rest Monday, August 10, 2015, at 8:28 a.m. at his residence at the age of 93 years, two months, and 14 days. Henry was born May 27, 1922, in Floresville, the son of Sophia Zak and Lukas Sralla, Jr. Henry Sralla Visitation was held on Friday, August 14 at 5 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. in Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville. Funeral mass was celebrated on Saturday, August 15 at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, officiated by Monsignor Frank Kurzaj. Interment followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Floresville. After graduation from Floresville High School, Henry spent many faithful years as an electrician. He married Augustina “Gussie” Ann Olsovsky on November 21, 1959, in Corpus Christi Cathedral in Corpus Christi. Henry was a member of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville for many years where he served as treasurer for many years. He and his wife Gussie still came to the lodge’s annual meetings. He was also lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Albert Adolph Sralla and wife Viola and Victor William Sralla. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 55 years Gussie Sralla of Floresville; sister-in-law Sylvia Sralla of Floresville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Nora Lee (Havlik) Zavodny, 91 of Duncan, Oklahoma, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, August 31, 2015, at the home of her son Bobby and his wife Paulette. She died peacefully in her home in the presence of her family after a brief illness. Nora Lee was Nora Zavodny born on April 9, 1924, in Cameron, Texas, to Henry J. and Matilda (Tomasek) Havlik. She was a lifelong resident of Cameron until she moved to Duncan, Oklahoma, in 2011. She was a graduate of Ad Hall School and C.H. Yoe High School in Cameron. Nora was a retired manicurist/ seamstress/factory worker and was a loving mother and grandmother. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Marek, Burns, and Laywell Funeral Home of Cameron. A small family memorial will be held in her son’s home, and her final resting place will be in Duncan, Oklahoma. Nora Lee was a member of the Evangelical Brethren Church of Buckholts and a member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother James (Jimmy) E. Havlik of Houston; and nephew Neil Havlik. Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club readies for Sept. 19 Extravaganza
Dear Věstník Readers, I hope everyone had a safe Labor Day weekend. State Royalty from District Two rode in the Westfest parade at 10 a.m., Saturday morning, and District Two Beseda dancers performed at 3 p.m., Saturday afternoon, September 5. Sunday, September 6 at 1 p.m. will be our regular monthly meeting. Sunday, September 13 is the District Two Fall Fun Meeting at Seaton
Star Hall. There will be games for everyone - spinning wheel, 50/50, cake walk, Bunco, SPJST name bingo, black jack, and guessing games. Please bring a cake for the cake walk, groceries for the spinning wheel, and an item or two for the silent auction. Proceeds go to the District Two Youth Program. Don’t forget the Christmas Ornament Contest - get creative. Lunch will be $3 per person and include barbecue chicken, potatoes, corn, green beans, rolls, and tea. Seaton members, please bring a cake for us to serve with the plates. This is always a fun day for all. Sunday, September 13 is also Grandparent’s Day. Scenes from Districts One/Four Summer Camp

Dear Readers, District One youth attended camp from July 16 through July 19, 2015, and they had a great time. Youth from Lodges 1, Fayetteville; 9, Snook; 17, New Tabor; and 186, Caldwell were in attendance. We welcomed Ronnie Roesler from Lodge 39, Bryan as a chaperone. We enjoyed having him back this year, and we look forward to him coming again. The District Youth Counselor from District Four came to enjoy their first year camping with us. This year’s theme was “Let the Good Times Roll—Mardi Gras 2015,” and youth decorated their cabins’ porches in Mardi Gras decorations. Youth participated in boating, tubing, and kneeboarding at the lake in Fayet-
teville. They played games, swam, made masks and picture frames, rode on a late night hayride, and enjoyed making s’mores. They also participated in BB and archery, learned new dances, had a shaving cream fight, and canoed and blobbed. Most youth enjoyed the high ropes course. Everyone enjoyed the dance on Friday night. We even had a few former youth show up to enjoy the fun. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Victorick for bringing sodas and cookies for everyone to enjoy. A special thank you to Lisa Minjares-Kyle with the Youth Transportation Program at Texas A&M Transportation Institute for bringing the two pedal cars. Youth ages 12 and older, chaperones, and staff enjoyed
learning what it was like to drive while drunk. An obstacle course was set up with crossings for people, animals, and other hazards in the road. The driver was allowed to make one round around the course. Then they were given a pair of goggles that simulated driving drunk and completed the course again. After everyone took a turn, the chaperone talked about the importance of not drinking or texting while driving. Youth ages five through 11 enjoyed a program from the American Red Cross call the Pillowcase Project. Fire safety and disaster safety was discussed. Each youth was given a pillowcase to decorate. The pillowcase is used to place items in that would be

needed in case of an emergency. Youth leaders Marie Shelfer and Sharon Kovar were honored with a catered meal for all their years of service with the youth of District One. This year’s Leaders-in-Training (LITs) did a great job helping with the younger youth. They led many games that they learned at the Leaders-InTraining workshop. Thank you to all of the LITs who came to camp and led by example. A big thank you to all the chaperones who came to make District One camp a huge success. I mentioned that we received a candy dish with candy in it and a scratch-off ticket (no winner) for the most likes on Facebook for our sand sculpture. Everyone had a good time. Saturday, September 5 - State Royalty court, which is also District Two King, Queen, Duke, and Duchess Brady, Kacie, Seth, and Makayla participated in Westfest Parade then District Two Beseda Dancers performed at 3 p.m. at the amphitheater stage at Westfest. It was a great performance as always.

Czech art exhibit opens in Houston
Dear Friends of Czech Culture in Texas and Elsewhere in the USA, I am writing to inform you and all friends of Czech art that the exhibition Apparition: Frottages and Rubbings from 1870 to Now opened on September 11, 2015, at The Menil Collection in Houston. This exhibition includes works of nearly 60 artists representing an international context of art over the past 150 years. Works of four Czech artists – Adriena Šimotová, Eva Kmentová, Toyen and Jindřich Štýrský – are also on display in this exhibition. I feel that this can be welcomed news for those in the USA with an affinity to Czech culture. I therefore ask that you spread the news. I am currently in Houston as the representative of the Adriena Šimotová and Jiří John Foundation in order to be present at the installation of the work of Adriena Šimotová at The Menil Collection. Sokol Dallas plans Friday night movie
For our September movie on Friday, September 18, 2015, we have a feature. Dark Blue World (Czech: Tmavomodrý svět) is a 2001 film by Czech director Jan Svěrák, the Academy Award-winning director of Kolya, about Czech pilots who fought for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. The screenplay was written by Zdeněk Svěrák, the director’s father. The film stars Czech actors Ondřej Vetchý, Kryštof Hádek, and Oldřich Kaiser. British actors include Tara Fitzgerald, Charles Dance, and Anna Massey. The movie is subtitled, an easy read with lots of familiar words for those who know a little Czech. Join us for dinner prior to the movie. The specialty this month is klobase, potato salad, and vegetables.The dinner and social begin at 6:45 p.m., and the movie begins at 7:30 p.m. You may bring sweets and snacks to share if you like. Don’t forget to invite a friend or two. Sokol Dallas presents this movie series as a service to the community. There is no charge for the movie. Donations will be accepted for the dinner. Hovezi Village Descendants Gather
The Seventh Annual Hovezi Village Reunion was held at the La Grange City Library on Sunday, August 23, 2015. This reunion brings together people who have ancestors and family that immigrated to America, mostly Texas, from the village of Hovezi, which lies in the Vsetin District of Moravia, Czech Republic. The reunion was first organized seven years ago by T.J. Slansky and Ted Kaspar who have ancestors from this village. While talking to many people at the various Czech functions around the state, they discovered that many other people in Texas also had ancestors from this village. They were anxious to meet everyone they could find whose ancestors came from Hovezi. Organizing a village reunion seemed to be a good format for meeting those people. The reunion wasn’t originally planned to be a continuing event. But those who came to the first reunion in 2009 enjoyed the gathering greatly and wanted to hold it again the following year. As word about the reunion got out, new people began signing up to attend.
The programs are varied. They include sharing family lineage, research, family stories, and programs on anything that might apply to Hovezi and the neighboring villages of Huslenky, Hostalkova and others. Visiting is a most enjoyable part of the reunion, as is svacina, provided by several people who attend. The attendance each year has been between 35 and 40 attendees. Ninety individuals have registered as having family from Hovezi. Three families on the register, who are in contact with Ted and T. J., live in other states. Hovezi Mayor Antonin Konarek sent greetings and best wishes to all who attended in 2015 that have families from Hovezi. The next reunion will be held on August 28, 2016. TCHCC to host Heritage Festival and Muziky
The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange will be hosting the Heritage Festival and Muziky on Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17, 2015. The Fest will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon with the vendors and craft booths open in the village. At 5:30 p.m., chicken and dumplings will be served while it lasts in the Hanslik Banquet Hall. Oktoberfest on the Deck will begin at 6 p.m. with music by the Dujka Brothers Band till 9:30 p.m. The Dujka brothers have been making music together for 27-plus years and have several acknowledgements to their name. They have been very successful in bringing new songs written by themselves and other local Texas writers to the Czech music and polka scene. The evening will conclude at 10 p.m. Saturday will see plenty of action all over the TCHCC Complex. The day will centralize in the Czech Village, an early 1900s recreated village complete with residential houses, barns, tavern, sawmill, and general store. Demonstrations of early life for the immigrants will take place throughout the grounds all day. There will be farming and household demonstrations and several children’s activities. An antique farm equipment and antique car show will spread through the village. At 10 a.m., the new sawmill in the village will be dedicated. A biergarten tent will be in the center of the village with musical entertainment all day long. Music will

begin at 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. by the Shiner Hobo Band and the Enzian Buam Band alternating. Vendors and craft booths will be available for shopping pleasure on the main street of the village, Czech Trail. A country store will be open for some good buys and you can also pick up some fresh stone ground corn meal for cooking. Plenty of food and cold beverages will be available as well. In the air conditioned TCHCC main center, the Czech Gift Shop will be open with a brand new stock of authentic Czech items, tee-shirts, caps, crystal, periodicals, music CDs, and new Christmas decorations for 2015. There will be textile demonstrations of spinning, looming, crochet, and knitting areas to view. In the Museum, a display of authentic Czech kroje and other items can be viewed along with a history of the area in and around Fayette County. The spacious Melnar Library will offer help with genealogy research for those interested in finding out more about their family or Czech history. The Hanslik Hall inside the main building will be the site of the 2015 Heritage Fest Taroky Tournament. The Texas Czech Music Museum featuring four genres of Czech music, classical, folk, polka, and liturgical, is located in the Kalich House and will be open for tours along with the Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum housed in the Hoelscher House. The day will conclude with the annual performance of Muziky, Muziky at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater on the complex grounds overlooking the scenic Colorado River Valley. This year’s Muziky will feature the Legends of Texas Polka Music Series with the recreation

of the famous Joe Patek Orchestra, Part II. It will be an exciting and memorable performance as the sounds of the Patek’s come to life one more time. Many talented and well known Texas musicians have been assembled to recreate the historic sounds to perfection. The master of ceremonies for the show will be National Polka Hall of Fame inductee Alfred Vrazel. Wallis church sets October 18 festival
The Guardian Angel Catholic Church Bazaar and Harvest Festival will be held Saturday, October 18, 2015. The church is located one block south of Highway 36 on FM 1952 in Wallis, Texas. Mass is at 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. in the beautiful, historical, painted church. Activities include music throughout the days, many booths, games, rides, auction, prize drawing, and plenty of cold drinks. A barbecue meal will be served. The church is open for viewing. Everybody Loves a Parade! Here’s Your Chance to Design an SPJST Float. We are looking for new themes and designs for SPJST’s two parade floats. These floats represent and promote SPJST in parades across Texas throughout the year. Submit your original drawing/design by October 1, 2015. Designs can be computer-generated. Designs selected for the floats will receive $50 Visa gift cards. Winners will be recognized in the Vestnik and invited to ride the float in a community parade. SPJST members of all ages can participate. Designs become the property of SPJST and will not be returned.
