The last SPJST Tasty Traditions cookbook sold old recently. No
more of these cookbooks remain. Thanks to each and every person who purchased a cookbook . . . and special thanks to all who contributed recipes to the cookbook. The cookbook was published in 2012 as a tribute to SPJST’s 115th anniversary and the Vestnik’s 100th birthday. A total of 5,000 cookbooks sold, and raised about $40,000. The funds benefited the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm. I recently visited with Colleen Jenke of Lodge 258, Seguin, and we reminisced about the beginning of SPJST Tasty Traditions. The idea for a cookbook was first thought of when Colleen brought the subject up to Ruth Hanusch of Lodge 47, Seaton and I as we visited during a fundraiser held at Lodge 29, Taylor. We were eating “Firecrackers” that Lynn Rieger of Lodge 29 made for the event. Colleen mentioned that it would be great to have a collection of recipes from members all around the state. The idea was born, and after Supreme Lodge approval, we began collecting recipes. Colleen
and I both thought we would receive maybe 250 recipes. However, to our surprise, more than 1,400 recipes were submitted. After months of compiling, typing, researching, and proofreading by dedicated volunteers, the cookbook became a reality in December 2012. Special thanks to Communication Assistant Katherine Morris for all of her extra work on the project. Five thousand copies were ordered. The cookbooks were sold through the Vestnik, SPJST website, and word of month. Initial sales paid for the printing of the cookbook order. After that, sales benefitted the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center. Thanks again for everyone’s support of SPJST Tasty Traditions!

Duties and Qualification This is an entry level position that requires two to five years experience in the accounting field. Duties may include data entry, scanning, answering telephone inquiries and correspondence with members, general office and clerical duties, and serving as backup to other accounting functions within the department. Qualifications include the ability to operate general office machines and scanners, being computer literate in Windowsbased software including Word and Excel and the ability to work in a team environment. Must be organized and have the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines. High school diploma or GED required.

State Tarok Tournament Feb. 1 at Lodge 6 Cottonwood
Lodge 6, Cottonwood will host this year’s SPJST State Tarok Tournament this Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the lodge hall. Entry fee is $7 per person (member or non-member), and the tournament is open to the public ages 16 and above. The entry fee includes noon meal and snacks. Awards will be presented to the top three males and top three females for high series and high game. Winning organization will be determined by pin fall. The total pin fall for each organization will be divided by the total num-
ber of participants for that organization to determine an average for the three games bowled. The organization with the highest average will be declared the winner. Proceeds from the tournament and a silent auction will go to the Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Scholarship Fund. Active graduating high school senior members of a fraternal belonging to Fraternal Alliance Of Texas are currently eligible to apply for the scholarship. Lodge 18, Elgin reports on December meeting
President Mike Mogonye called the meeting of the SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin to order on December 17, 2013. He led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were some additions and corrections to the minutes. The minutes were then approved with the corrections. Treasurer Charles Wilson gave the treasurer’s report. David Meyer gave the FAC report. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund is accepting donations for next year’s scholarships until March 31, 2014. The State 42 Domino Tournament will be hosted at Lodge 47, Seaton on January 11, and the State Tarok Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood on February 1. The Fraternal Alliance Of Texas Bowling Tournament will be held in New Braunfels on February 8, complete with a silent auction, all to benefit its scholarship fund. All of the forms and flyers for these events are on the SPJST website under Fraternal Activities, and registration can also be completed online. The annual SPJST Awards Banquet is on January 25 in Temple at the Mayborn Center. Youth Leader Joyce Nelson gave the youth club report. She was very saddened to report to the lodge that the youth club could not participate in the annual Elgin Fireman’s Light Up Christmas Parade on December 7. She wanted to clear up any confusion: the youth did not cancel their participation in the parade due to the cold weather. The locks to all of the exterior lodge doors had been changed without notice, and she was not given a new key. The youth club could not access their decorating materials for the float, located in the youth room at the lodge hall. She apologized to all of the youth, as they were disappointed they could not participate, as well as to the Fire Department, as they look forward to the SPJST Lodge 18 float each year. There were only seven entries in the parade.

On December 10, Joyce delivered donations on behalf of the youth club to the Elgin Food Pantry and Elgin Police Department for Blue Santa. The youth club donated $50 to each, and the lodge matched those donations. She also delivered the angel ornaments to the Taylor Assisted Living Community that the youth had made. On December 14, the youth delivered more angel ornaments to the Elgin Golden Years Nursing Home. Afterwards, the youth club held its annual Christmas party at Mr. Gatti’s in Taylor. Charles Wilson gave the bar report. Evelyn Gustafson reported a get-well card was sent to Irene Helgren, and sympathy cards were sent to Agnes Eschberger and Shirlene Matetzschk. Birthdays for December were Charles Wilson, F.L Meyer, and Alan Meyer. There was no old business to discuss. John Ottman from Elgin Little League Association was in attendance. He requested the use of the hall for the Little League to host a fundraiser in April. After checking the dances and rentals for the month of April, he agreed on April 12 for the fundraiser. The lodge approved the vote to donate the hall for their fundraiser, with the Little League to pay the hall cleaning fee for their rental. Alan Meyer brought to attention that other organizations hold their monthly meetings and events on the same night as the lodge meetings. He made a motion to move the meeting date as it interferes with his other activities, but many expressed concern about changing the meeting date to accommodate a few, without more specific information. The idea was tabled until the January meeting. It was also brought to the attention of the members that Tommy Wright, who has cleaned the hall for the last three and one-half years, was informed he would no longer be needed to clean the hall. This decision was made without a full board of trustees and only by certain members of the existing trustee board. This matter did not constitute an emergency so the decision was considered null and void according to the bylaws. Wright was in attendance and asked if he needed to return his keys, or if he was still needed to clean the hall until the full trustee board could meet and discuss the matter. It was decided that Wright would continue cleaning the hall until after the January trustee meeting when the matter could be examined with a full board of trustees.
Lodge 15, Buckholts Member Shares Almanac Theory
Dear Věstník Readers, I am a procrastinator and when I procrastinate, I do so on a grand scale. Like now with this letter . . . I go to last June’s lodge meeting when our distinguished guest was Honorary District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and his wife Ruth Ann. He brought us up-to-date on what was going on with him. He said he bought some land in the Gause area where he’s making improvements such as building fences, tanks, barns, etc. Everything was a success except his watermelon crop was a failure. That was beyond his understanding since they grow real well in that sandy soil. I was thinking about it a few days later, and it struck me. It was because he planted them in the wrong sign of the moon. You see, I believe in the signs as shown in the Almanac calendar. We used to think it was just a bunch of old wives’ tales until we were proven wrong. You see, my husband John used to call his friend Henry Haisler to come work his calves. One time when he called him, Henry said the sign ain’t right. John said he didn’t care because we had a hard time pinning the calves so Henry said okay, but the sign ain’t right. Henry was right for that was the sickest bunch of calves you ever saw, bleeding like crazy, and swollen, laying all over the pen. A big calf couldn’t even get up; we had to call the vet
There were some questions about how to interpret the rules and regulations in terms of filling the trustee board and doing so correctly. It was brought to the attention of the lodge that the president of the lodge does serve on the trustee board, but does not get a vote. State Youth Director Lynette Talasek shared how the trustee board is organized and operates at her lodge. Due to some underlying issues at the hall, such as Wright’s dismissal and the lock changes as well as some contention about the rules and regulations and correctly implementing the trustee board accordingly, and the creation of a committee to update the lodge’s rules and regulations, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak requested that some items brought forth during the meeting be tabled until the January officer and trustee meeting. State FAC Horak and

I almost forgot to mention that the sign Henry was waiting for was Pisces, the feet - a good sign to have surgery or have teeth pulled, etc. I almost forgot to say Bobby must have planted his watermelons when the sign was Leo the Lion, Heart. I have three stacks of them that I read over and over like when I can’t sleep at night. Come February 6, I will be celebrating my 98th birthday. No wonder I’m always sick; it’s because I’m old. I should be ashamed for complaining. Instead, I should thank God that I’m able to live alone on my farm. I’m able to walk twice a day to tend to my cat at the barn. Lodge 48 Beyersville plans February 22 appreciation dinner
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited for the opening of the meeting on Sunday, January 19, 2014. The officers gave their monthly reports, and all were approved as read. The youth club reported that the annual Easter egg hunt will be held on April 13 at 3 p.m. We will report later on all the events for that day as they become finalized. It was presented and approved that Lodge 48 donate $250 to Relay for Life. In other business, the monthly meeting time was again discussed with the majority in agreement that the second Sunday of each month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. will be the official meeting time. Due to a conflict with hall scheduling in the months of May, June, July, and August, the meeting time will be the Monday following the second Sunday of each month at 6:30 p.m. An appreciation dinner will be held on February 22 at the hall, and at that time, the recipients of 50-year membership pins will also be honored. Another upcoming event is the turkey shoot to be held on March 9. We will have additional information posted in the February Vestnik. Sister Dana Mcadams received correspondence from SPJST Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak concerning a list of names that need to be brought up to date with correct addresses. She also read correspondence from Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride listing three new sales agents for Lodge 66. They are Via Jean Randolph, Richard Allen, and Nelson Washington, Jr. She also read correspondence from Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek concerning the awards banquet on January 25 at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Sister Dana also received a list of 50-year members from Ruth Hanusch from the SPJST Fraternal Department. They are Richard Allen, Mary Ann Andrle, Joe J. Domesle, Joe Anton Dvorak, Janey L. Fall, Thomas W. Gerik, Patricia Ann Motis, and Rose M. Williams; and two 75-year members are Robert John Cervenka and Bobbie Lanell McCown. Sister Dana also received a letter from Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak stating that the lodges need to increase sales membership by 15 percent. Sister Diana Engelke received a thank you letter for the donation that Lodge 66 sent to Lutheran Church Charities Canine Ministries. Sister
Diana also read a thank you note from Sister Dorothy Gerlich for the donation made to St. Joseph Catholic School in Arlington in memory of her husband Eugene Gerlich. President Engelke reported that the anniversary luncheon on November 2 turned out very well. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. Lodge 66 FAC Sister Diana Engelke read a letter from State FAC Frank Horak concerning Lifetime Achiever awards. He also stated that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will end on March 31. He also listed the 2014 tournaments. Sister Dorothy Veselka reported that she sent a get well card to John Engelke who had surgery. We are glad that Brother John is feeling better. She sent sympathy cards to Dan and Jeanette Pokluda and family on the death of his brother Bill Pokluda and to the family of Henry Krueger, Jr. on the death of their mother Genevieve Prnka Krueger. Lodge 81 Needville welcomes new youth club
The January 2014 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 19th. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was recited by Vincent Newman. Everyone enjoyed a meal of potluck including an assortment of main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us. President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order a little after 1 p.m. Bradley Stavinoha led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for departed members, Erlin Horelica, Nora Prihoda, August Hartfield, and John McLaren. We extend sympathies to their families and friends. All officers answered the roll call except Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read. Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha

Jeanette Newman announced that she delivered the case of peaches to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in December. Under new business, the rules and regulations committee submitted the new 2014 rules and regulations. They were accepted by the lodge. We voted in two new members—Tucker Novosad and Tristan Novosad. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall announced that we will need to honor the 50-year and 75-year members at the May meeting. It was voted on and passed. District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt talked to us about several items of interest going on in SPJST.
“The Lord’s Prayer” in Czech Presented to Teykls from Austin
SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek presents a framed copy of “The Lord’s Prayer” written in Czech to Phyllis and Tom Teykl of Austin. The framed print was awarded as the grand prize in a drawing hosted by SPJST and held in conjunction with the Slavic Heritage Festival held September 29, 2013, at Knights of Columbus Hall in Houston. Under the direction and guidance of the Slavic Alliance of Houston, the Slavic communities gather annually to honor Saints Cyril & Methodius and to share in the celebration of their Slavic heritage with ethnic foods, singing, and dancing. Tom and Phyllis Teykl were attending the festival on behalf of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. Copies of “The Lord’s Prayer” print — suitable for framing — are available from the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple for $10, which includes tax. Since we had a few new faces at the meeting, he explained about fraternalism and talked about annuities. Next, District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales talked to us about the new youth club. She said that she will come to the next few meetings to help new youth leader Bradley Stavinoha. It was certainly nice to see some new faces at the meeting. New youth members are Bailey Stavinoha, Briana Nesvadba, Madison Schultz, and Anna Gadaway. We also had the pleasure of meeting Darlene Langlotz, Georgia Ann Rambo, and Newell Rambo. We hope you come to see us again. Lodge 92 Fort Worth reports on activities
I hope all are having a good new year! The newly elected officers were installed at the December 1, 2013, Christmas party. The children’s Christmas party with Santa was held on December 22. Everyone had a good time with gifts from Santa and snacks. After the nativity scene performed by the youth, all the children gathered on stage to sing Christmas songs to usher in Santa. Thank you to Gloria Farek for her $100 donation for the goodie bags and the donation of Beanie Babies for children’s goodie bags. With donations, there was no cost to the filling of the bags. Also, a thank you to those who donated cookies and treats to the refreshment table and to Pam Durham, Gloria Farek, and Holly Anderson for their help setting up and arranging the refreshment table.

Randy and the 92nd Roadhouse band played for the New Year Eve’s dance, and all enjoyed the country and western music. There were 86 in attendance which is an average turnout compared to other halls.
Congratulations, Gloria! Gloria Farek is our lodge fraternalist of the Year and will be honored January 25 in Temple at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center. However, due to illness, she will not be able to attend but she is on the mend. At the January meeting, members voted to increase the yearly dues from $3 to $5 and those 65 and over are exempt. It was also reinstated that only those paid up on their dues are eligible for discounts when renting the hall for functions. The Lake Worth Chamber of Commerce has rented the hall for its banquet in February, and the hall has been nominated as ‘Business of the Year.’ We will know the winner at the ban-
quet. Beginning in March, we are bringing back ballroom dancing on the third Friday of the month and country and western dancing on the fourth Sunday of the month. At the February 9 meeting, we will have a potluck dinner after the meeting. Gordon and Cheryl will furnish the main course of fried chicken, and all others will furnish side dishes or dessert. On April 13, we will present 50and 75-year pins to our members and will hold the children’s Easter egg hunt. There will be a meal at this event. Come on out. We always have a great time. Congratulations to our members celebrating birthdays who are age 65 and older. We will be sending birthday wishes each month in the Vestnik beginning with December 2013 birthdays. Lodge 141, Sealy plans February 23 meeting/meal
A short meeting was held to cover necessary business. Bernice Stolarski made two motions: first, to make a $100 donation to Gordon Memorial Library for the use of its meeting room; and second, to make a $75 donation to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Both motions were seconded by John Simpson and approved. The next item of business was the proposed meeting/meal to be sponsored by the SPJST Home Office on February 23 beginning at 4 p.m. at Tony’s Restaurant in Sealy. All Lodge 141 members will be invited to this free meal and get acquainted meeting.

Lodge 187 Round Rock reports on fun meeting
January was a fun meeting with entertainment by Johnnie Haak as she told some very funny stories and a hilarious story that Rubie Volek brought. I am still giggling! We also discussed the upcoming meeting in Temple later this month and who all is doing to attend. A big thank you goes to Rubie Volek for bringing some wonderful bags of fruit for the door prizes. All were on the edge of their seats in hopes of winning a door prize. Thank you to all for the delicious potluck that ended the meeting. Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point reports on January meeting
The January 6, 2014, meeting of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point was held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Following a meal of sandwiches, chips, and dessert, the meeting was called to order by President James L.
Lee, III at 6:30 p.m. Guests welcomed were Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and David Nauert. Guest speaker Brian told us about his trip to Chicago and how grateful he was to be back home. Of the $250,000 goal for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial, about $150,000 has been collected. There is a proposed dedication plan for November 9, 2014. Right now, we are short about $100,000 of the goal. SPJST Awards Banquet is January 25, and the guest speaker will be Drayton McLane, Jr. The treasurer was not present at the meeting. The financial report presented by James was approved by all. Past FAC Charlie filled in for new FAC Susan. Next Meeting—February 3 All members were challenged to

started her workshop. Lennie Deagen, Dolores Vrana, Georgia Holy, Cheryl Prachyl and others standing around were interested in all that Irene had to say. By lunch time, we had 23 members and one guest Joe Ehrenberger. We had two other guests - Lennie Deagen and Cheryl Prachyl who joined our Circle. We are so happy to have them. This was a great way to start the new year. President Irene led us in grace then we all enjoyed a delicious lunch of soup and sandwiches. We had four different pots of soup and many different sandwiches. All were good. Thank you, everyone, and thank you to the set up and clean up crew. After lunch, quilters returned to quilting, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and “Our Father” was recited for the members. Secretary Dolores read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Dorothy gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read thank you notes - one from Anne Tupy for Agnes Dujka and Libbie Wisniewski. One from Bessie Laznovsky, Frances Vinkler, Dorothy M. Kudrna, and Josephine Kubin. Ginny also read four newspaper clippings that were enjoyed by all. The sunshine report was given by Ann Clagett as Eleanora was absent; she had a treatment, I think. We want to send a special thank you to Frances Vinkler for the two sacks of yarn she sent to anyone who wanted it. I’m sorry to say the yarn was gone, and I don’t know who took it. I’m sure they will enjoy making pretty things out of it. President Irene asked for everyone to try and invite one person this year to visit, and maybe they will enjoy it and join. Dorothy Prachyl installed our officers. She did a great job. New membership directory books were handed out, and I forgot to pick up three extras - one for Bessie, Frances, and Geraldine. I will do so next month. Libbie Vrla and Dorothy Prachyl made a motion that the Circle pay Irene for the ink cartridges and paper that she used in printing the books. It was voted on by all. Barbara Phipps volunteered to be the new kitchen committee chairman. She does have helpers, but as usual, I didn’t get their names. In February, we will quilt for Pat
Lodge 179, Warrenton Member Receives Lifetime Achiever Award
Congratulations to Ruby Renck of Lodge 179, Warrenton. She was recognized with the Lifetime Achiever award by District One Director Donnie Victorick at the lodge’s January meeting.

Other News I want to congratulate Wilma and Frankie Vrla on the darling picture of them and their two great-granddaughters in the Věstník. I understand, they are expecting another great-grandchild. I want to send a hello to my friend Georgia Wienken and say, “How about those Cedar Hill Longhorns football players?” They won state in December at AT&T (Cowboy) Stadium in Dallas. We got to go to the last few games, and I always think of you. They were all exciting games, always down to the last minute. Stay well, everyone. See you February 13. Fort Worth Friendship Club
The meeting of the Friendship Club was called to order by President Sharron Connelly on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. President Sharron led everyone in reciting the Pledge of Alle-
giance, and Vice President Rose Ann read a most appropriate poem “Friendship.” We only had 18 members in attendance due to the weather—it was a cold day. President Sharron thanked past officers—President Betty Krenek, Vice President Alene Kercho, and Secretary Elizabeth Creamer—for the good job they did for the last two years. The minutes from the last meeting were read by Mary Ann Krivanek, and Treasurer JoAnn Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. It was nice to have Agnes Saldana, one of our newer members, in attendance. President Sharron read a poem on “change” and said we were going to have some changes. We were no longer going to have hostesses. She volunteered to be the dish washer all year. She further said that Rose Ann Spann, Lola Taylor, and Shirley Martin will take care of all decorations for the whole year. She personally contributed $30 toward decorations and stated no treasury funds will be used for decorations, and the ladies will just use what they have at home. Hostesses for the month were Mary Ann Krivanek, Lola Taylor, and Libbie Vrla, and since we didn’t know about the new change, we just did what we were supposed to do along with great help from Lupe Esparza – we could not have done it without her. Thanks, Lupe! Sharron did come in to help with the dishes. The President thanked Libbie for making arrangements for the November program by a Crime Prevention Specialist from the Fort Worth Police Department, and thanked Rose Ann for arranging the December program

with a ventriloquist. As Sharron said, we were going to have a change, and she elected Lydia Alholm as “Queen for the Day.” Lydia was given a cape to wear, was crowned, given a bouquet of yellow roses, and asked to sit on her throne (a special white chair) and to tell us about her life and Friendship Club days. Lydia talked of her marriage to Roy, being in the Waves, all the places they lived, and teaching school—first at St. Thomas and then for 30 years in Fort Worth ISD. She said she used to take her mother to the Friendship Club, but she didn’t start coming as a regular member until she retired from teaching. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to January celebrants Monalee Hattendorf, Betty Landsfeld, Kitty Rippin, Lois Smith, and Darlene Tompkins. May you all have many more. Since I’ve attended some past special birthday celebrations, I just happen to know that this was Betty’s 90th birthday and Monalee’s 93rd birthday. Betty told me she was taken out to eat and even enjoyed some slivovice. Door prizes were brought by Paula Arsenault (two), Lydia Alholm (two), and Libbie Vrla. Thanks, ladies! The first winner of the 50/50 dollar games was Paula Arsenault, and I failed to get the second winner’s name as I left to start putting the food out. Tell me who you are, and I’ll put your name in my next article as Sharron asked if I would continue to be reporter. Pat McWilliams reported that Ella Greer had some medical problems and then got pneumonia. After her hospital stay, she is now staying with her daughter. Mary Ann Kozel reported she also had pneumonia, and after a five-day stay in the hospital, she had home health care come until she was able to take care of everything herself. Lydia led all in saying the “Hail Mary” for all our friends who were not able to be with us. Lydia led the blessing, the meeting adjourned, and a great lunch was enjoyed with ham and all the side dishes. Games were played and “our Queen” won five games, actually it was six, but she was not fast enough to let us know on one. News Anna Johnson received a New Year’s letter from Darlene Konen and had asked me to read it at the meeting. But since that didn’t happen, I told Anna I would just write about it. Darlene wrote that her mother, Nettie

Naugle, our longtime member, became ill in October and was in the hospital twice that month. After a bout of pneumonia, she was transferred from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility for rehab. Nettie is doing quite well there so they are currently working on approval for permanent placement. Darlene wrote that they visit her often, but sometimes Nettie doesn’t remember that. Darlene’s husband, Tom Konen, also our longtime member, had back surgery in March and had some side effects which they are hav-
ing to deal with. His neuropathy has worsened so he transfers back and forth from a wheelchair, walks only at therapy sessions, and cannot drive. They want to get a van with a lift for an electric chair so they can get out. Let’s keep Nettie and Tom in our prayers. A lot of you may remember Rita Thomas, friend to several of us and a member. She also had pneumonia, was in the hospital five days, and after being home about a week, she received a call that her brother George
passed away. George’s religious name was Brother James Augustine Kossuth, and he lived in the Chicago area. Every winter, he would come to Fort Worth and stay a couple of months to get away from the cold weather. He loved coming to the Friendship Club to eat and play games. George taught high school in St. Louis and later becoming principal. Rita, our sympathy goes out to you. Helen Skrasek celebrated her 90th birthday in December with 48 family and friends at an Italian restaurant with

wine flowing, lots of great food of shrimp and chicken, and homemade desserts. Even had entertainment of live music by her brother-in-law Harold Strand of Waco on his accordion, singing Christmas carols and even dancing in the aisles to some Czech songs. It was so nice to meet her son and daughter-in-law Ron and Lee Ann from Oklahoma City and her granddaughter Dr. Stephanie, her husband, and two daughters from Tennessee. I’ve been writing about them for a long time so it was nice to finally

meet them. Our Friendship Club table of Lorraine, Paul, Lydia, and myself were invited and we had such a good time. Of course, Helen’s other son and daughter-in-law Gary and Debbie and their son, wife, and granddaughter were there so it was nice to meet them, too, especially the little granddaughter. During the holidays, I attended the 100th birthday party for Agnes Reznicek Owens at her nursing home. Anna Marie Moncrief had Aggie all dressed in pink with a beautiful cake. Aggie enjoyed the visits from everyone. Son Ted and grandson Ted and his wife were there so it was nice to meet the grandson. I recall meeting son Ted at Aggie’s 90th birthday party hosted by Anna Marie and Bill at the Petroleum Club. I had stopped in to see Aggie after our December Friendship Club meeting. She was in the activity room enjoying music and singing, and she always clapped after each song. She said she always liked music and to dance. I also stopped in to see Merel Kovar before Christmas, she was sitting in the television room and was so glad to see me. She seems to be doing great. I believe she has even gained a few pounds and was so glad to receive the chocolates I took her. This past Sunday, Helen, Lydia, my sister Lil, and I traveled to Dallas Sokol to listen to the Moravska Jedenactka brass band from the Czech Republic, and we especially enjoyed the pork roast, dumplings, sauerkraut, green beans, and kolaches. It was nice to see cousin Frankie and Wilma Vrla, Martha Vrla, her son John and his wife there. It’s been a long time since seeing them. Lydia still enjoys going to WinStar once a month. She showed us her first 1099 IRs form she got for year 2014. We need her taxes to help support the economy! To cousins Millie Breden of Illinois and Olga Pechak of Houston—just want to let you know we had two deaths in our side of the family during 2013. Melton Vrla, son of Dad’s brother George and wife Clara Vrla of Grayson County, died in April. Melton and his wife were living in Mineola, Texas, and his wife elected not to have any type of service. Then Charles, son of Dad’s brother Henry and wife Mary Vrla of Ennis died in August. His son Tim and his mother Ann had a beautiful service at the chapel at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis with Father Henry Drozd officiating. Charles had been in a nursing home for the past several years and while he
was in Fort Worth, I used to go visit him. I took him a radio so he could listen to Czech music on Sunday, but the next time I went, had to go looking for the radio again. The aids always knew where the radio was and would always give it to me. Charles was later moved to Wichita Falls and died there. The next meeting will be on February 5. Remember, no hostesses – I’m wondering how the food will get on the serving table – but someone will probably be appointed for these duties. Maybe I just missed something. Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
Last month, we were iced out and unable to have our annual catered luncheon and gift exchange. But today was a different story altogether. It was a perfect, Texas, winter day—the sun was shining; it wasn’t too windy; and everyone was ready to get out of the house and catch up after the holidays. The meeting was called to order with 59 members and guests attending. President Marlene Bass led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Vice President Theretta Praslicka read a New Year’s verse from a 1989 edition of the Vestnik. The words are ones that we should strive to live by every day and think about as we travel the road of life. Guests were introduced and welcomed. Janet Basham brought Pat Needham, who grew up in the area close to the lodge, moved away, and has recently returned to this area. Doris Overstreet brought her cousin, Cathy Symmank (who I found out later had ancestors from the Zabcikville/ Red Ranger area southeast of Temple). Judy Hattendorf Branton was there with her mother, Monalee Hattendorf. It was so good to see Monalee in her spot after a very long absence. Judy is semi-retired, and we hope she will come again soon. In November. we approved to dispense with business reports for the day of the party; however, we did have updates on our missing members. Sunshine Chair Pauline Morbitzer announced that she had sent cards to Didi Soares, Mary Ann Kozel, and Gloria Farek. Secretary Joan read

thank you notes from several members and Evelyn Scaff reported that our sweet Gloria Farek was in the hospital. She can’t have visitors at the moment, and all we can do is send her get well wishes, good thoughts, and remember her in our prayers. While we tried to keep business to a minimum, we did have to address one item. We needed to elect a new treasurer. Margaret Lamance agreed to accept the position after a vote, and we are so pleased to have her sitting at the front table with us. Outgoing Treasurer Pauline has been in office since 2002 and has done an incredible job. Our thanks and gratitude go out to her for her devotion and hard work. In connection with financial matters, may we remind you that dues will be payable in February. Now for birthdays. We had a big bunch to honor. We not only recognized the January Birthday “Girls” and “Guy,” but we included those born in December as well. Pictures are included in the Vestnik with names; however, no ages are listed. These ladies are all young-at-heart and oh what fun it is to sing and see the smiles on their faces. No one minds getting a year older: we are just thankful we have an opportunity to see what another year will bring. Sherrie Watkins announced that the lodge would be starting ballroom dancing again in March. The country and western dances continue to take place the first Sunday of each month.

All are welcome to come and enjoy the dancing. The meeting adjourned for the gift exchange. Mary Ann Krivanek was kind enough to read the “Wright/Left” story. I’m here to report that many bottles of wine were given and “we” girls are going to have a party. (~Smile~) Seriously, there was so much laughter and enthusiasm over the wonderful items that were brought. I think everyone was pleased with what they received because we tried to do a show-and-tell, and no one was listening. After things settled down a bit, we held the drawing for the lovely quilt that was donated to the Circle. Our thanks went out to Lucy Martinez and her mother for donating the quilt top; to Evelyn Scaff for having the quilt put together; and to everyone who bought chances. Hermina Cihacek drew the winning ticket and it was . . . ta-da! . . . Pauline Morbitzer. The blessing for lunch was given and after a lot of visiting, we enjoyed a very nice catered lunch. Bingo followed lunch, and Monalee Hattendorf and Mary Ann Kozel won the black out to end an enjoyable day. District Two youth enjoy fun, food, friends at lock-In
Dear Vestnik Readers, District Two youth members, friends, youth leaders, and chaperones had a fantastic time Friday night, December 13 through Saturday morning, December 14, 2013, at Lodge 29, Taylor at the District Two Lock-In. Fiftytwo youth and 13 adults enjoyed a sleepless night. Or shall I say, the majority enjoyed staying awake all night. There were continued activities from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Our evening began with get acquainted games. District Two Director Jesse and wife Linda Pospisil led the famous District Two Grand March. Every youth member and their friends joined in on the fun. Partners were chosen by the adults so most danced with someone they did not know—with no complaints, I want to mention to you parents. When the march finally came to an end, which seemed like hours, everyone was wound up for the next adventure. Leader-In-Training Alexis Festa led the all-time District Two favorite game “Ships and Sailors.” It was so much fun with so many different faces, positions, and moves. There were different stations set up with Bunco led by Connie Voigt, and Joyce Kraatz called out the “Bingo.” Do the guys from Taylor want to comment on the Bunco winners? Let the Vestnik readers hear from you. Cristy Girod had the cute crafts all set up with different varieties of Christmas ornaments. The Santa and reindeer look great on my tree. Minute-to-win-
it games were led by Amber Bartek. Once we enjoyed pizza and snacks, the older youth went downstairs to enjoy a scary movie. I understand the threat of the movie took second place over the doors slowly moving, the noises, the lighted signs going off, and on and the screams of the chaperones. All in all, everyone enjoyed the movie and the extra effects with everyone making it safely back upstairs. Those not sure of what would happen downstairs enjoyed a movie that was a lot more my type of enjoyment. Saturday morning, 6:30 a.m. came upon us very quickly. Seems like when we are all together having fun such as this or camp, the time goes too

fast and we never have the time for all we have planned. Everyone tried their hardest to get up and help clean the hall. Doughnuts and juice were furnished and served by Director Jesse and Linda. Thank you to Connie and Wayne Voigt who came the night before and fixed the stage to give us the glow-inthe-dark atmosphere. We appreciate your time. District Two sets youth development workshop
Dear Members, Please join District Two youth for an exciting afternoon/evening on Saturday, February 15, 2014. The afternoon will begin at 1:30 p.m. for the first-ever District Two Youth Development Workshop, located at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. We will begin with a few ice breakers to get everyone motivated and ready for action. Three interesting topics will be discussed, and you won’t want to miss out! State Youth Director Lynette Talasek will discuss duties of officers and committees and share suggestions on how to make the youth meeting more interesting. Melanie Zavodny, our SPJST Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication, will talk about the importance of Youth Achievement Day (YAD) talent. She will offer some great tips on speaking and finding the right talent act for YAD. Two of last year’s YAD photography judges—Dave Hansen from Temple College and Scott Woodall—will share ideas on picturetaking. Bring any questions you may have in any of these three categories, and I am sure these fine professionals will be happy to help you. Pizza and drinks will be served to those attending the workshop before heading on to the next activity: skating at Wheels Family Skate Center. Skating time is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Many commented on how much they missed the skating party last year. It is back this year, and we hope you will attend. Of course, your friends are invited and will also participate in the workshop. And yes, parents, we’d love to have you join us, also. You may pick up on some super tips. District Three youth invited to Feb. 8 lock-in at Lodge 25, Ennis
Dear Youth Leaders, Now that the holidays are finally over and we are trying to get back into our daily routine, District Three has scheduled a lock-in with Lodge 25, Ennis on February 8, 2014, at 7 p.m. Help will be needed from each lodge planning to attend. Lodge 25 will need to know which children will be attending (including ages) by February 1. They are planning some activities and will need help from chaperones. Each participating lodge will need to bring at least one activity with all necessary supplies. This would help us have enough activities to make the entire night fun and exciting! Lodge 25, Ennis youth shares life activities
Dear Vestnik Readers, Before I go into talking about all I’ve been doing, I would like to apologize for not writing a letter in a long time. I really wanted to write a letter, but you just don’t understand how busy I am. I wake up at 5:20 in the morning, go to school, do all my after school activities, and by the time I get home it’s about 8 or 9 p.m. When I finally get home, I still have to do my homework, take a shower, and prepare for the next day of school. When it comes to weekends, I have plenty of chores and activities to do, so I can never find the time to write a letter. As you can see I’m one busy girl. Now that I’ve explained why I haven’t written a letter, I’d like to explain what I’ve been doing. My eighth grade year has definitely been packed with fun, friends, and most of all— polka dancing. I’ve been doing everything from playing my bass clarinet in band, to cheering on my team in cheer. There’s most certainly a lot I have to tell you about.

First, let’s get to the basics. I’m an eighth grader this year at Ennis Junior High. Can you believe I’m already in eighth grade because I’ll be honest with you, I can’t even believe it. My classes are all Pre-AP (honors) classes, and I have two high school credit classes which are Algebra and Business Information Management (BIM). My electives are BIM, band, and athletics. I am also in cheerleading, student council, history, listening UIL, and National Junior Honor Society. My eighth grade year is clearly packed with adventure. Now that you’ve heard all about school, I think it’s time I talked about my favorite day of the entire year. That’s right, the day I go to Westfest. I know it happened way back in August, but Westfest means way too much to
me to not tell y’all about it. I could go on forever on how much fun I had, but I’m going to put it in the simplest words I can. It. Was. Beyond. Perfectly. Awesome. I got to hang out with my friends, see some of my SPJST family, look at all the interesting booths, ride on rides that practically make you throw up, and best of all—DANCE. Now, let me tell you, there are three steps into making dancing the best thing in the world. Step one—wear your cowboys boots. Step two—I suggest you take two to three Advil. Step three—y’all guys need to find a “Pretty Dancing Girl,” and girls, if I were you, I’d be doing the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” to the cowboys with a pair of boots on. Trust me, forget the knight in shining armor idea, you need a cowboy in a pair of Wrangler’s. After Westfest came homecoming. It was so much fun. Even though I’m an eighth grade cheerleader, they let me cheer at the homecoming game! It was such a thrill to perform in front of all my friends and the city of Ennis. It’s such a great feeling to know that you’re part of the reason the Ennis Lions are undefeated. Another thing I have to tell you about cheer is that a big part of being a cheerleader is being drug-free. To show the little kids of Ennis you can be successful if you’re drug-free, we did a pep rally at one of the elementary schools. It was literally the Be drug free! best feeling I’ve ever felt in my life. The bus pulled in with me and all the other cheerleaders in it, and the kids eyes were wide saucers. I was the first cheerleader out of the bus, and as soon as I took a single step out of it, the kids screamed at the top of their lungs with excitement. We cheerleaders got escorted to the area where we were doing the pep rally, and we put up stunts as the kids walked into where we were. They were clapping and screaming like we were celebrities. When we were done with stunts, we started doing drug-free cheers, and it was the most adorable thing ever to see the little kids say the

cheers with us. When we were done with the pep rally, the cheerleaders handed out suckers that said, “Don’t be a Dum-Dum! Be drug free,” and we got to high-five the kids and talk to them. One little girl went up to me and said, “Can I give you a hug?” I most definitely said yes and when she hugged me, she turned to her friend and said, “Oh, my gosh! I touched a cheerleader!” It just made me beyond happy. All the kids kept on saying how pretty, I was and a lot of them even told me that they want to be just like me when they grow up! It was the best feeling in the world. I have to admit it, I was so happy that I cried.

Shortly after our visit with the little kids, we had a pep rally. Suddenly, afterwards, it felt like semester exams snuck in. I haven’t got all my scores back, but from the scores I have received, I scored 95 and above. The most difficult exams were science and reading, but it’s not like they were hard. It was just a little bit of a challenge.

Finally, after a whole year of waiting, I got to go hunting again! It was so much fun, and as always, really cold. Although it was cold, it was one of the most fun times in my life aside from polka dancing, of course. We went with my family, my Mima, Pawpaw, and my Uncle Michael. Mima was such a great cook, Paw-paw was excellent at insuring that my gun was perfect, Mom was so supportive, Daddy and Misty provided me with

peace and quiet while they sat in the travel trailer all day and didn’t bother anyone, and Uncle Michael made the whole trip as fun as it was. He contributed so much to my success. He humored everyone, helped out, and my favorite part of all—he let me ride in his jacked-up truck on the way to the restaurant, and we blasted music. It just made my day. I found out that we both like the same music, and that really means a lot to me since music has such a big impact on my life. The best part of all was when I shot my eight-point buck. I had such an adrenaline rush, I was shaking, and I was breathing really hard. I just took a big deep breath, prayed a “Hail Mary,” and as soon as I said amen, I pulled the trigger. As I slowly opened my eyes, I realized that my deer was gone. A million thoughts were streaming through my mind. I couldn’t think straight. “I can’t believe I missed. I’m such a failure. It’s gone. Why does this happen to me? Please dear Lord Jesus, let him be dead. I want some deer meat so bad. Man, how awesome would it be to shoot an eight-point.” As cruel as it is, these were the thoughts that were pulsing through my brain for what seemed like hours, but in reality was just five minutes. When my Mima and I got out of the stand to look for the deer, my mind automatically went berserk. I was so determined to find that deer. Right when we were about to give up, I saw some blood. No, not only a spot of blood, but a whole trail of blood! I started screaming and jumping up and down. I followed the trail, and finally, I found my wonderful buck. I was so proud of myself. This hunting trip was definitely one I will never forget.

Soon after I shot my buck, it was Christmas. It was such a good time. I was so happy I got to spend quality time with my family. Of course, the presents and food were great, but the best part was spending time with my family and making a closer bond with

As far as presents go, from Mima and Paw-paw, I got makeup, perfume from PINK, a camouflage comforter for my bed, a tee-shirt from Big O’s (a restaurant we ate at when we were hunting), lots of adorable shirts, and a bunch of Japanese Cherry Blossom soaps and lotions. It smells so good! From Uncle Robert and Uncle Michael, I got money. I’m not sure what I’m going to spend it on yet, but most likely it will be on The Mortal Instruments books. I’ve been dying to read them! You have no idea how much I want to read them. Anyways, Mom and Daddy bought me an iPhone 4s, a camo Otterbox case, and the cutest clothes ever. Santa got me clothes, camo sheets, scarves, socks, $100 iTunes gift card, beef jerky, a lot of Vera Bradley bags, and the best headphones and speakers ever. They take blasting music to a new level. It’s awesome. From Uncle Tim and Aunt Kimberly, I got socks, a cute little purse, an iTunes gift card, $50 gift card to Sam Moon, $100 to spend on anything I want at the Galleria, and the best present in all of history. It’s the best present I’ve ever got. I got a Kindle Paperwhite. I cried when I got it. For the ones who don’t know, a Kindle is something you can download books from the internet on and read them anywhere you want. To you, it might not be much, but to me, it means the world. There are five things on Earth that mean to world to me, no. 1 — my SPJST family and its contributions to my life, no. 2 — my family and friends, no. 3 — reading, no. 4 — my education, and no. 5 — polka dancing. So as you can see, reading is a big deal to me. Along with my Kindle, I got four books to download on it. I would tell you what they’re called, but then I’d get in a big discussion on their impact on me, and so much more. For the sake of time, I’ll just wait until next time to tell you about my obsession with reading. As you can conclude, I’ve been really busy. I can’t wait to write my next
letter because I’ll get to tell you about Czechfest. I’m so excited! I expect to see you there on February 8 in Ennis at Sokol, and if you see me, feel free to say hi. (: It will make my day. Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club Visits Green Acres Dear Věstník, For our December outing, we went to Green Acres in San Antonio. Green Acres is a mini-golf and amusement center. We had a lot of fun! Despite the cold that day, we went outside and played a round of miniature golf. I did pretty well, too. I didn’t hit a single ball in the water this time, but my sister was a big cheater. We also had fun in the arcade and on the “Trampoline Thing,” which was a trampoline with bungee cords. All in all, it was a fun trip. Sincerely, Michelle House —SPJST—

After about two and one-half hours of standing in the arena with my rabbits, I earned second to last place by placing 36th. There were 90 pens of rabbits so I feel that I did pretty well for my first year. With my goat, I placed eighth in a class of 22. At the auction that will take place on Saturday, the 18th, I have decided to sell my rabbits since we are allowed to only sell one animal in the auction. All in all, it was good day! Expression of Sympathy
We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, JERRY DALTON ODSTRCIL. Funeral service for Jerry Dalton Odstrcil, age 75, of Caldwell was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 30, 2013, at Elizabeth Lutheran Church in Caldwell with Pastor Sam Koenig officiating. Burial followed at New Tabor Cemetery. Visitation was Jerry Odstrcil from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, November 29 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Mr. Odstrcil died Sunday, November 24. He was born on September 18, 1938, in Cooks Point, Burleson County, Texas, to Vlasta (Garbs) Odstrcil and Rudolph Odstrcil and had lived in Caldwell since 1993. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1957 as salutatorian of his class. He went on to Texas A&M University in 1957, but he graduated from Blinn College in 1959. He returned to Texas A&M and graduated in 1961 with a bachelors degree in mathematics. He became a teacher and taught for 41 years before retiring in 2002. His teaching career began in Fayetteville where he taught from 1961 to 1981, being teacher, principal, coach, and bus driver. The next 12 years, he taught at Schulenburg where he served as math chair. In 1993, he retired from the public schools and substituted regularly at Caldwell ISD and Dime Box ISD. In 1998, he returned to full time teaching at Brazos Christian School in Bryan. During his teaching career, he received his masters degree in 1967 from Texas A&M University and attended summer school at the University of South Carolina at Columbia. He also attended Charles University in Prague Czech Republic during the summer of 1983. He was the Odstrcil family genealogist and traced the family tree back
to Svebohov in the Czech Republic. He visited Svebohov over 20 times and loved anything Czech especially Czech music. He accumulated a large collection of Czech crystal from his relatives there. He even had one of his relatives come to Caldwell and become an exchange student for one year. While being a math teacher, Jerry was active in all aspects of school life. He was sponsor of the National Honor Society, UIL literary math contests, and school clubs. He was also active in the NEA, TSTA, and Fayette County Teachers’ Associations. He loved teaching! Jerry was a devoted Lutheran and was a member of Elizabeth Lutheran Church in Caldwell. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. In his last years, he remained active in the Burleson County Czech Heritage Society holding various offices. He also served as RSVP for the Caldwell Senior Center for many years. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph and Vlasta Odstrcil. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Tammy Lynn Odstrcil Baker and James of Austin; girlfriend Marcella Janecek; brothers and sistersin-law Hubert and Delores Odstrcil of Columbus, David and Emilie Odstrcil of Bryan-College Station; nieces Pam Bartlett and Debbie Odstrcil; and nephew Chris Odstrcil. Pallbearers were Scott Sartain, Jeff Pauler, Alex and Ryan Wellborn, Jaquin Hernandez, and Jeff Cernocek. Honorary pallbearers were Chris Odstrcil and Gary Bartlett. SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Officers and Members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of JUDY HRABINA. Judy Hrabina, 72, passed away in Ennis, Texas, on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Judy was born in Ennis, Texas, on July 21, 1942, to Johnie and Dolfie (Haskovec) Hrabina. She grew up in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1960. She worked as a “Kelly Girl” for many years until 1995 when she became the full time selfless caregiver Judy Hrabina of her mother for over seven years. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis and the Methodist Church. Besides the time she spent caring for her family, she enjoyed reading, music, and watching television. Judy was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. She is survived by numerous cousins and friends including Roger Nesuda, Carol (Nesuda) Mraz, Janice (Haskovec) Matthews, Cynthia (Haskovec) McCallum, Ronald Haskovec, Jimmie Hrabina, Sylvia Hrabina, and David Hrabina. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation was at 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 18 in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. February Theme: Coat-of-Arms Saturday, February 8 Before much of the people could read and write, coats-of-arms served as symbols to identify cities, towns, tradesmen, etc. The children will learn that colors had special meanings with the coat-of-arms. They will also learn about how some of the legends inspired the designs. Czech words will be learned and, of course, a few of the puppets will also have a few things to say and do to help children create their own coat-of-arms.
March Theme: Prague Castle Saturday, March 8 Prague Castle was constructed around 800 A.D. The castle is still recognized as the Czech Republic’s political center. Housed inside the castle grounds is the famous St. Vitus Cathedral, which houses the remains of St.

April Theme: Kraslice (Egg Decorating) Saturday, April 12 Get ready for Easter. The kids will decorate their own egg for the traditional Czech Easter celebration. Kraslice is a hand-decorated Czech egg. Several methods of decorating are used, and the children will learn about each of them. The eggs are displayed in bowls or baskets as table centerpieces as well as hanging ornaments.
Tarok Lessons Taroky is a trick-taking card game. The basic rules first appeared in the manuscript of Martiano da Tortona, written before 1425. Tarok, recorded as one of the oldest types of card games known, is extensively played in Austria and throughout Europe. The deck consists of 56 numeral cards of four suits and 22 emblematic cards called trumps. Tarok champion Jimmie Coufal brings his expertise to the Tarok table. In November, the museum was delighted to have him give lessons on the European card game to a crowd of beginners. It was so well-received that we have asked him to come back and teach us more about the game. Those

The 12th Annual Czech Heritage Society Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen Pageant and Spring State Meeting will take place on April 26, 2014. Hosted by the Fayette County Chapter, the event will take place at the American Legion Hall in Flatonia, Texas. Czech SpringFest set for April 27 at Lodge 88 Houston
Our 19th Annual Czech SpringFest will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston in the Heights area. Starting at 11 a.m. with music all day provided by Kovanda’s Czech Band and at 3 p.m. by the Chris Rybak Band. A guest artist from Honodin, Czech Republic—Anna Burilova—will demo making and decorating perniks (a gingerbread pastry). The event will also include a silent auction, plant booth, and many vendors. A traditional Czech Sunday dinner will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. After 1 p.m., Czech soup and sausage with sauerkraut will be served. “Homey” Environment
“Some brief reflections of our life at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community”
The facility has a “homey” environment, yet it is decorated with class. We like it for my mother because we are confidant she is in a secure and safe place. She gets three nourishing meals per day, gets her medication given at the right times, has her housekeeping taken care of weekly, can go to church, beauty shop, and exercise right there in the facility. There are so many activities for our mom in the facility as well as out and about taking the “SPJST Bus” for outings. Sometimes she must pick and choose because there is more to do than time allows. From the director to receptionist, volunteers, cooking staff, nurse, maintenance, and housekeepers, etc. everyone is so friendly and gets to know each resident by name. The thing we like most though is that the family is encouraged to participate in activities and enjoy meals with your family member. It is great, too, that my sister from out of town is allowed to spend the night when she comes for a visit. We especially like the common areas we can reserve when many of us visit at the same time. If you are looking for a place for a loved one where you don’t have to worry about them, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor is the place you are looking for. —Charlotte S. We moved here from Dumas, Texas, a small town north of Amarillo in the Panhandle. Our reason for moving here is that our daughter and her husband live here in Taylor, and we needed to be near them. We also have some of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that are in the area, too. We feel fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place. The staff is great, and they are very helpful in making everything pleasant. We find the staff and residents friendly and always willing to help. We enjoy the church services, musical entertainment, and bingo. There is always some kind of entertainment we can choose to attend. We would recommend S.P.J.S.T. I moved to Taylor when my son and his wife found this place this wonderful place. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Staff, employees, and residents are so willing and able to help in so many ways. There are so many fun things to do here. Today, we visited the Blanton Museum of Art down at the University of Texas. It was wonderful. There is always something to do, exercise everyday in the week, and very well-attended. Lots of entertainment, bus trips, and more fun!
