SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook Salutes Important Milestones
To commemorate two very special anniversaries, SPJST members submitted more than 1,400 recipes that were compiled into SPJST Tasty Traditions. This 700-page cookbook recognizes SPJST’s 115th anniversary since its founding in 1897 as a non-profit, Texas Czech fraternal life insurance. The cookbook also celebrates the organization’s own weekly newspaper – Vestnik (which is a Czech word for “bulletin”) that has been bringing members, lodges, and the entire organization together since 1912 . . . 100 years ago! “We wanted a creative way to honor SPJST and the Vestnik for these special anniversaries,” Colleen Jenke, who served as cookbook co-chair, said. “So we decided that a collection of members’ favorite recipes would be a unique way.” The cookbook is arranged into 18
sections. These include Czech Cooking; Appetizers, Dips and Sauces; Pickles and Relishes; Soups, Stews and Chilis; Salads; Beef; Chicken and Turkey; Pork; Seafood and Wild Game; Casseroles and Other Main Dishes; Vegetables; Breads, Rolls and Muffins; Cakes; Cookies; Pies; Candy and Other Desserts; No Sugar Added; and Beverages and Miscellaneous. “The cookbook committee hoped to receive about 300 recipes,” Vestnik Editor and cookbook co-chair Melanie Zavodny stated. “But, the recipes just kept coming in . . . we were overwhelmed by the response, and the willingness of so many people to share their recipes and their families’ recipes. Some of the recipes are treasured keepsakes that have been in families for
