Delegates endorse non-profit 1.AM and education center S PJST delegates took sweeping action at the Twenty-Eighth convention to position the SPJST for dynamic growth in the years head. A summary of significant convention actions and election results follows: Convention Highlights Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar called the Twenty-Eighth Convention to order, followed by _-eetings from District Six Director Supreme Lodge Chairman Matt ek. City of Temple Mayor Keifer _arshall, an SPJST member himself, , .o welcomed SPJST members to _ __nple. A. total of 285 delegates, representing 36,209 votes, were seated for the opening of the convention on Monday morning, June 12. Following a report from Credential Chairman Darlene Engelke, delegates elected Glenn Kaminsky of Lodge 28, East Bernard as convention chairman. Leonard Jansa of Lodge 160, San Angelo, was elected convention vice chaiiman. SPJST LAM off to a arand start. Following the decision by delegates to approve the establishment of the non-profit SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, delegates received a surprise announcement from retirin2, District Five Director Louis Hanus of Lodge 88, Houston. Brother Hanus, and on behalf of his wife, Oleta, presented SPJST LAM President Glenn Kaminsky with a personal check for $100,000 to apply towards the project. The check was presented in honor of Brother Hanus's
mother and father, Rose and Louis Hanus. "Let me thank each of you personally and fraternally for your vote," said Brother Hanus in making the presentation. "Your vote has assured me that the history and culture of the Czech people will pass on to future generations . . i thank God that my wife and I are able to make this contribution." in acce p ting the gift, Brother 'caminsky acknowledged Brother __anus's faithful support of the ! ,-)ncistanding committo sfne p reservation of Czecn heritage and culture. See What You've Been Missing If you're in Temple this summer, make it a point to stop by and visit the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, located in the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street. A major goal of the LAM is to preserve the Czech cultural heritage. It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer Czech forefathers and mothers who settled Texas. By-Laws Revised For the next day-and-a-half, delegates reviewed the recommendations of the By-Law Committee. The following is a summary of significant ByLaw revisions which were enacted. • Change to the preface of the SPJST By-Laws under the section entitled "Name," to read as follows: The name of this Fraternal Benefit Society is SPJST, originally chartered as the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST)).
