Charitable Bingo remains popular pastime, fund raiser _-....exas bingo players won $431.8 million in 1998, according to the Charitable Bingo Operations Division of the Texas Lottery Commission which regulates the popular game. Over the same period of time, Charitable Bingo contributed $42.8 million to Texas charities. Charitable Bingo is a popular pastime and an important fund raising activity for groups of all kinds. As that relates to the SPJST, seven lodges play Charitable Bingo on a regular basis. In turn, these lodges contribute thousands of dollars annually to building better communities through donations to many community service and charitable projects. "It's a fun game and a good chance for people to get together," says A.J. Stayton, bingo operator at Lodge 88, Houston. "Everybody here volunteers their time to the effort. It's been that way for a lot of years and it's allowed us to give a lot of financial support to a lot of worthy organizations." A partial listing of groups that benefitted from SPJST Charitable Bingo in 1999 appears on page three. Winn Bradshaw, bingo operator at Lodge 74, Lovelady echoes Brother Stayton's words. "It's allowed us to make a positive difference in the community," he says. "At one time, our country-western dances were the big thing." After a while, the people kind of lost interest," he observes. Lodge 177, Academy Vice President Otis Beck is one of the regular callers at the lodge's Tuesday and Friday night games. On those nights he isn't calling, Otis and his wife, Jackie, can often be found playing the popular game down the road at the Holland SPJST lodge hall.
