FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK To more them, 50 million American families, father will be a big man on June 19th. Though Father's Day was first started in 1910 in Spokane, Washington, it was not as well celebrated in its early years as it is today. From a modest beginning, Father's Day is now a very important occasion, sentimentally and commercially The best is none too good for father, and in our CzechAmerican background he is still the respected member and head of the family. * And -- all over this country, during May and June, class after class of young Americans graduated from many different schools and universities as well as colleges, who took that long step forward, following, several years of preparation, into the demanding world of today — a world filled with trouble and uncertainty. Our suggestion is that our graduates accept our troubled world and fight the many problems with intelligence, fierce honesty, patienceo unselfishness, efficient work, and a pride in the United States of America. With achievable working goals, courage, vitality, and determination, our country will progress and our civilization will go forward because of this needed leadership our young adult population can give. Let us carry onward!
FATHER'S DAY JUNE 19th, 1977 HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TO ALL FATHERS Although some things may change a lot As years go by, it's true, There's one thing that will never change In any way for you, And that's the real affection In this wish for you today For all the very finest things That life can bring your way. With the National Sokol Slet approaching (in Chicago, Ill.), the editor visited the Southern District Sokol Slet at Sokol Zizka Athletic Center and SPJST Lodge No. 130 in Dallas Sunday, June 5th in the 'afternoon. The entire afternoon was filled with eye-pleasing performances by Sokols of all ages. It brought back fond memories of the slets we, as a family, visited in Houston. Now, 35 years later, some of those participants are still active! We wish our Sokols much success in Chicago. Following are two narrations read by Brother Jerry Milan that we felt are worthy of printing. It was a wonderful evening and may you go onward!
Under supression came on the horizon Miroslav Tyrs, Founder of Sokol, who instilled into the people an undying wish to reawaken their pride to take their rightful place among nations with patriotism, democratic ideals and strength molding the Sokol Organization. The Czech Sokols came across the sea to America the land of the free. From all walks of life . . . inspired to help build a strong and healthy nation. Forever moving forward they will always be remembered as bold . Their enduring courage can now be told . . . That their valorous labors made a nation of wonderful neighbors. Our destiny — yours to fulfill. You can, you must . . . we ask for this monumental task. * * We the youth of America pledge ourselves to this illustrious history of Sokol idealism and to its new' horizons . . . That this nation shall be healthy and strong . . . that there shall be Justice, Liberty, and Dignity. Our fervent hope is that America shall always 'be Free and the Home of the Brave. * • "Your Name" You got it from your father. Twas the best he had to give, And right gladly he bestowed it -- it is
