THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, October alst we attended the District III fall meeting hosted by Lodge No. 25, Ennis. The attendance was not as good as it could have been, however, this being the time of the year, this can be expected. District III Chairman Ed Mazanec, Sr., conducted the meeting efficiently and with fraternal consideral iork. All oi the district officers ga ,a; their reports and are to be min , tea() .d for their efforts, District III ialrector Sid Pokladnik gave his raport on his attendance at the NFCA in Hollywood, Florida, his District III director's report, and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director's report. Frankly, the delegates to the XXIInd SPJST Convention are to be commended for their generous contribution to the charitable cause of relieving the rest home debt by the gift of $100,000 toward that cause. It was a benevolent move which displays our Society's attitude in helping our a ged and helping our government and nation care for those who need it. The directors of our rest homes do appreciate this fraternal jesture and realize the value of such actions. This was displayed by all of them, especially at the convention, and since, at district meetings, wherever we have attended. While addressing the meeting I stated that if the excerpts from the minutes of the Supreme Lodge meeting held October 12-14 contained anything like what was in

a letter sent to the Publication Committee at' their meeting October 30th„ I would have no other course to follow than to explain to our members as I did to the PC. Here is what transpired in chronological order and then compare the report. In the July SL meeting President Morris brought up the subject of the editor's clerical help. Director Broz (IV) stated that the Vestnik was still only 32 pages. Director Pokladnik stated that I accepted the job with no condition of having clerical help. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska saw we were getting nowhere and suggested I bring an estimate of how many hours of help was used. I agreed. Director Pokladnik (evidently speaking for the audit group, and I don't know how many there are), questioned a $28.50 voucher for my trip in April to Taylor Lodge No. 29, to the annual Czech students' and professors' meeting and said that this was not an SPJST affair and Brother Morris agreed. I stated that I would refund the money. Next was a voucher for $73.50 for mileage to officiate at a funeral, at the fandly's request. I explained that I had a long-distance call late at night requesting that I be there the next afternoon and I agreed to do so. I was told that since neither President Morris or Vice President Hejny were contacted the trip was N(Y1' au-

thorized. I stated I would refund that also. The sum was $102.Q0. After attending the meeting for 21/2 days and seeing what had transpired, I began to wonder about some of the questionable harmony that had been displayed during some of the personal exchanges. I began to realize that fraternalism was being set aside for personality, especially in one exchange of remarks which did not pertain in any way to me. Wednesday morning, October 13, my wife went to pick up her medical report at Scott & White Clinic and, at noon I took the other vehicle and attended the Supreme Lodge meeting. I listened to repbrts by Brothers Hejny and Mikeska. At about 15 minutes to 5, I was asked about the July decision. I showed the executive body the two $400 checks I had paid Maxine for July and August and told them that she was worth $100 a week to me, but that what they would do was their affair and decision. Brother Hejny stated that I accepted the job without provisions for clerical help and that he gave his wife money, also. I asked him how much help did she give him in the office; I received no answer. Naturally, he has SFM Silas Smith and about three assistants. Brother Morris came up with this observation: "The Vestnik is still only 32 pages and the increased circulation is no added
