FEBRUARY 2, 1972

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In several preceding issues of the Vestnik, you have been advised of the Miss SPJST contest. When this program was presented and adopted in 1960, probably some of our members focused their thoughts on the idea that the program is partially a nuisance; however, the past results show that it does create activity, interest, and publicity for young and old members of our SPJST. Since 1960, our Society has had three Miss SPJST representatives, and each one has won the hearts of almost every fellow-member with their beauty, poise, personality and talent. Nowadays, very rarely do you find anyone who does not know what the ,SPJST initials stand for as used to be the case in days gone by! State Youth Director Sister Dorothy Massey had the rules of the Miss SPJST contest printed in preceding issues of the Vestnik, and you can refer to them and study up on the rules whenever a question arises within your lodge or district. Start searching for a young lady between the ages of 16 and no older than 20, as of January 1, 1972, and single. Remember that a selection will be made at each spring dist. meeting, we understand, but not later than May 20, 1972; so keep this date in mind and be wise by making your preparations early. A GOOD FORMULA FOR LIFE Give me a good digestion, And also something to digest; Give me a healthy body, With sense to keep it at its best. Give me a healthy mind, please! To keep the good and pure in sight, Which, seeing sin, is not appalled But finds a way to set is right. Give me a mind that is not bored, That does not whimper, Whine or sigh; Don't let me worry too much over That fussy thing called "I". Give me a sense of humor, Give me the grace to see a joke, To get some pleasure out of life And pass it on to other folk. —Your Editor same time, we can help the Society stand as a beacon light if we can get everyone's cooperation during the entire year and that can help all of us in our advance forward. Always try to keep this in mind: Let us not ask ourselves what the Society will do for us, but ask what we can do for our Society by taking part in its program. Let us imbue our youth with the knowledge of the richness of the heritage they are now enjoying, which is only possible in a free society, and let us all place our shoulders to the wheel in 1972 and recharge our enthusiasm, faith, and thus en-

rich our lives, ever-mindful of the words of a departed fraternalist and friend: "I am only one. But I am one. I cannot do everything. But I can do SOMETHING. What I can do I ought to do — What I ought to do, I will do!" Brothers and Sisters, there is a job to do. It can be done and we can do it. Let's get on with it — IN A DEMOCRATIC WAY! Cooperation brings success. We would like to bring to your attention the fact that the district organizers and local organizers have made a terrific achievement in our Society's history by regarding it as 365 days laden with opportunity and challenge when they secured 3,180 members and yielded $9,211,590 in business. The overall picture of the insurance written has certainly made 1971, our 74th-75th year, the most outstanding year we have ever enjoyed, insurance-wise, as well as financially. While reminiscing about our pioneer founders, we realize that almost none of them had a doctorate, and did not even attend a college or university to be qualified to sell insurance. Yet, in spite of this, shall we say disadvantage, they left us an inheritance and after many, many years, we today gratefully
