FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK WOMEN AND LIFE INSURANCE
SALESMANSHIP
Men and women agree on at least one thing: life insurance. Statistics tell us that modern women, having invaded the working world, now own more than $120 billion worth of life insurance, in a variety of insurance plans. Studies by the Life Insurance Agency Management Association indicates that approximately 60 per cent of all adult women own some form of life insurance. Since women are becoming more and more involved in the economic structure of the family they need life insurance for the same reasons as their male counterparts. It is expensive to hire a "substitute mother." Careful studies show that it costs $7,8t100 a year to replace a mother in the home. Another study reveals that fully 59 per cent of all wives are insured, and most of them own some form of individual life insurance. Taking care of funeral expenses, estate settlement costs, leaving an income for the children, all make life insurance attractive to the woman who is the sole supporter of her family. A woman left with two children to support Vurchased ordinary life insurance for her children's education and security. Ordinary life provides financial protection in case of death, and builds up a cash reserve. Many women are attracted to life insurance policies because the holder is almost forced to
When a movie studio advertised in New York papers to fill a vacancy on its sales force, one applicant replied: "I am presently selling furniture at the address below. You may judge my ability as a salesman if you will stop in to see me at any time, pretending that you are interested in buying furniture. "When you come in, you may identify me by my red hair, and I will have no way of identifying you. Such salesmanship as I exhibit during your visit will be no more than my usual work-aday approach and not an effort to impress a prospective employer." From more than 1,500 applicants, the redhead got the job. save. The cash values accumulated in life policies provide a growing available source in time of need, opportunity, or for income at retirement. Men and women do not always chose the same policies. Women usually buy plans that have a higher premium and higher cash value, on the theory that they will be working only a few years and they want to get in as much as they can. Endowment plans are also favored by women. These policies are paid for over a certain number of years, and when they mature, the owner received the full face amount of the policy. Of all the women wha purchased life
insurance in 1965, 15 per cent purchased endowment plans, compared with only 7 per cent of the men. The family plans are the next most favored form of life insurance among women. Most of the women with these policies are heads of families and want to provide insurance protection for the entire family. Working single women usually retire about five years earlier than men, and live three to five years longer, so that they have about eight more retirement years than men. Consequently, retirement benefits and financial protection in case of death are especially, attractive to these women. The SPJST offers plans in all these categories, at the lowest possible premium cost. Unfortunately, we Americans take this duty and privilege all too lightly. As a result, we have one of the poorest records of voter turnout on election day in the whole world. Almost any country you name has a better record when it comes to voting on election day. We covered this topic in last week's issue on this page, so we will only briefly review what the requirements are on voting qualifications, in light of recent legislation and court rulings.
