FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In this week's issue of Vestnik under features you will find two interesting pictures and information, both rather well-connected with the SPJST. One is of and about our Miss SPJST of the last (20th) convention, Sister Joan Pavliska. If my memory serves me correctly, the first Miss SPJST, Sandra Watson and the second Miss SPJST, Betty Jo Machann both got married before the newt convention was due and held, and new here goes Joan! We wish her a fraternal bundle of good luck in the future. May she and her husband, Lary, have many happy years together and a long healthy future. The other is of and about Sister Helen V. Schnell and their two children. Sister Schnell is the daughter of Sister Helen Valcik and the late Brother Stephen Valcik, former Vestnik editor, and a well-known SPJST fraternalist of Houston. Our acquaintance with the entire family dates back to the thirties. Her husband is Brother Richard (Dick) Schnell who has taken so many of the pictures for the Vestnik. She writes: "I imagine some people are wondering if I ever became the lawyer I set out to be. Donna was two gears old when I decided to study law and enrolled in my first pre-law courses. She was 10 years old Christmas Eve. Richard Byron is 20 years old." Your editor saw the article in the Houston Post dated Wednesday,

THINGS THAT COUNT Not what we have, but what we use, Not what we see, but what we choose— These are things that mar or bless The sum of human happiness. The things nearby, not things afar, Not what we seem, but what we are— These are things that make or break That give the heart its joy or ache. Not what seems fair, but what is true, Not what we dream, but what we do— These are things that shine like gems, Like stars in fortune's diadems. Not as we take, but as we give, Not as we pray, but as we live— These are things that make for peace, Both now and after time shall cease. —Author Unknown December 10, 1969, which was headed: "C'ountians pass bar exams." Therefore, you see that Sister Schnell was admitted to the bar and (your editor does NOT infer that it was the one in the Blue Room at Lodge 88). We wish the best of luck and success to her in the future with her law office at 535 Bankers Mortgage Building, 708 Main St., in Houston and warn Brother Dick — Lookout, there is an attorney in your house! Be careful what you say! Your editor happens to know that she was sworn in December 15, 1969. May your attention be called to the

convention committee in Houston and the "kick-off" day of the drive for funds to entertain the 1972 SPJST Convention. The date is Sunday, January 18. It is sponsored by Lodge Stefanik. No. 142 and Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88. My memory recalls the 1952 convention in Houston. At that time we had a committee for the convention under the chairmanship of Brother Frank Olexa. The committee went to work about two or more years previous to the convention composed of members of Lodges 142 and 88. They worked hard and gathered together a fund in the amount of approximately $5,000. The committee in Houston is to be commended for beginning their drive for funds at this early date and deserves the support of all of us whenever possible. It is NOT an easy and inexpensive matter for any city to host any convention, especially a fraternal convention at the present time. In 1952 we spent about $4,000. of the amount we had accumulated and we all can rest assured, that at the present time, it will be more. The extraneous entertainment and affairs not pertaining to the convention are, (in a manner of speech) a necessary evil, however, are a part of any convention, so let us ALL, whenever possible support this DIAMOND JI.1BILEE CONVENTION COMMITTEE in their efforts. After all. let us all remember
