21st September 22nd September 24th September 25th September 25th September 25th September
This week has been full of energy across our school, with our CCA programme getting underway, Student Council taking shape and lots of exciting learning happening across all year groups. A real highlight was our first ever sports fixture, with the U11 Girls taking to the basketball court against Dulwich. We also enjoyed lovely community moments through Bring Your Parent to Lunch and our Digital Learning workshop, while celebrating some fantastic student achievements both in and beyond school.

WELCOME! WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL Our Ethos in Action As we come to the end of our third week together, it has been wonderful to see the ethos of our school becoming increasingly visible in the everyday life of our classrooms. It can be seen in the way children approach a difficult problem with perseverance, listen carefully to another point of view, show kindness to a classmate or have the confidence to ask a thoughtful question. Our Year 5 and 6 girls’ basketball friendly with Dulwich on Monday was another lovely example of this. Of course, sport gives children the opportunity to develop skills and enjoy competition, but it also teaches something much broader. We saw our students supporting one another, responding positively when things did not go their way and representing our school with humility and respect. These are the same qualities we want to see in the classroom too, with children willing to have a go, learn from mistakes and support those around them. It has also been lovely to see our CCA programme come to life this week, with children heading off excitedly to activities across the school. These opportunities give students the chance to try something new, explore a talent and discover new interests. Alongside all of these wonderful opportunities, we also want to make sure children have enough space in their week to rest, play and simply enjoy being with friends. Some children love having a busy week, while others benefit from a little more unstructured play. Having space to make up games, chat with friends, run around or simply decide what to do for themselves helps children develop independence, creativity and strong friendships. If you notice that your child is particularly tired, becoming reluctant to attend an activity or simply seems to have too much happening in their week, please talk to us. We are very happy to help families review and adjust CCA schedules where needed. As the school continues to come to life, I hope our children feel both challenged and supported, excited by the opportunities around them and comfortable simply being themselves. That is what a St Paul’s education is all about: children feeling safe, known and supported, while having the confidence to discover the things they really enjoy. Wishing all of our families a wonderful weekend.
JAY THOMPSON Head of Junior School

EARLY YEARS UPDATE This week in Early Years, we have continued to see the children growing in confidence as they become increasingly settled within their routines and learning environments. As the children feel safe and secure, we are beginning to introduce more phonics and mathematics within the environment and through play. In Reception, the children are continuing their Monster Phonics learning, alongside opportunities to explore early mathematical concepts throughout the day. We are also seeing lovely connections developing between the children as friendships begin to grow. There has been a continued focus on supporting children’s personal, social and emotional development, including independence, communication and learning how to play and work alongside others. Our family-style lunches are also becoming an important part of the children’s daily routine. We want children to have time to sit and enjoy their lunch without feeling rushed, while developing independence and positive eating habits. Children are encouraged to select a range of foods and explore a healthy variety of choices as they eat together.
EMILY LUKE Head of Early Years
LEARNING AND TEACHING UPDATE I have been really impressed this week by hearing about and seeing examples of our integrated curriculum in action across the Junior School. It is wonderful to see how learning becomes so much more meaningful when subjects are connected and children are given opportunities to apply their knowledge in different contexts. In Year 1, for example, Humanities and Drama have been brought together through an engaging activity where the children interviewed Mrs Kim about how toys have changed over time. This provides a wonderful opportunity for children to draw on their historical knowledge while developing their speaking, listening and questioning skills in an authentic context. Year 6 has provided another wonderful example, with Oliver Twist, the Victorians and their English text, The Promise, all coming together through a fabulous drama session. These experiences demonstrate the power of an interconnected curriculum: children are not simply learning individual facts, but building knowledge, making connections and understanding why their learning matters. By providing meaningful, memorable experiences, we help children to embed their knowledge, think more deeply and make sense of what they are learning in the context of the world around them. This is exactly the kind of curious, connected and purposeful learning we want to see at SPGSI.
VICKY MEREFIELD Deputy Head Learning & Teaching

PASTORAL UPDATE It has been another exciting and positive week as we continue to create meaningful opportunities for our students to contribute to school life. Following the launch of our inaugural Student Council, classes are now in the process of selecting their representatives. Our new Student Council team will meet with me each week to share ideas, discuss what matters to their classmates and suggest ways in which we can make our school even better. Student voice is incredibly important to us, particularly during our founding year, and we want every child to feel that their opinions are valued and can make a genuine difference. We are very excited to begin working with our representatives and to hear their thoughtful and creative ideas for the future of our Junior School. We also proudly launched our new Gold Moment recognition system during assembly this week. Gold Moments celebrate rare and exceptional examples of The SPGSI Way in action, those very special occasions when a student’s choices reflect our values and have a meaningful and positive impact on others. Students receiving a Gold Moment will be presented with a gold wristband, celebrated by our Senior Management Team and recognised through a Golden Message shared with their family. By shining a light on these wonderful moments, we hope to help our students understand the positive influence they can have on those around them, while inspiring our whole community to live out The SPGSI Way each day. We cannot wait to celebrate many special Gold Moments with you as the year progresses!

LEARNING OUR WAY The children in Nursery have begun a collaborative piece of process art using chalks. They explored crushing, sifting and sprinkling the chalk with sieves, pestle and mortars and shakers, noticing the colours and textures that emerged. As they worked together, they shared ideas, built friendships and enjoyed discovering how their artwork developed. Ms Rowan Nursery
In Year 4 Mandarin class, we have been learning how to ask and answer “Where are you from?” and exploring different countries and nationalities. Each week, we introduce six new nationalities, giving students plenty of opportunities to build their vocabulary and become more confident using Mandarin. Through a variety of fun station activities, students practise the new vocabulary and sentence structures across all four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our stations are also a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their social and collaboration skills. They practise taking turns, listening to their classmates and working together. Ms Kristina Mandarin Teacher

In Humanities, we have been exploring our inquiry question “How can the same change be viewed differently?” We have been investigating the idea of perspective, considering how the same place or event can be experienced differently depending on who you are. We then explored how Ayutthaya developed into a powerful kingdom, using maps to investigate how its location, rivers, fertile land and access to trade routes created opportunities for settlement and growth. Each group presented Ayutthaya in a different way and considered how life in the kingdom might have been different for merchants, fisherman, farmers, craftspeople and rulers. The children have been challenged to think like historians and geographers by using evidence, asking questions, making connections and justifying their ideas. Ms Olivia Year 4
9
BECOMING STORY DETECTIVES IN YEAR 2 Year 2 has been busy exploring The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield. Rather than simply reading the story, the children have been becoming "story detectives" – looking carefully at illustrations, spotting clues, making predictions and thinking about how the characters might be feeling. We have been learning that good readers look beyond the words on the page and use evidence to explain their ideas. The children have also been using their discussions to support their own writing, building confidence in turning their thoughts into clear sentences. Mr Paul Year 2
Reception have been very excited to observe and care for our caterpillars, watching closely as they grow and change. The children have enjoyed sharing their observations and asking lots of questions about what they have noticed. Our caterpillars have now formed their chrysalises, and we are patiently waiting to see what happens next! We cannot wait to continue watching their amazing transformation. Ms Victoria Reception

This week, Year 5 have begun an exciting new English adventure with our focus text, Kaspar- Prince of Cats by Michael Morpurgo! We brought the story to life through freeze frames, working collaboratively in groups to recreate key moments from the opening of the story. The children then became story detectives, using clues from the text to infer what the characters might have been thinking and feeling at different points. We also used our devices to investigate some of the story’s new, unfamiliar vocabulary, places and historical references. The children were particularly fascinated by The Savoy Hotel in London, one of the novel’s main settings, and enjoyed discovering more about this famous hotel and its connection to the story. It has been wonderful to see the children already becoming immersed in Kaspar’s world, with lots of thoughtful discussion, creativity and curiosity! We’re excited to see what adventures await us as we continue reading. Ms Tia Year 5

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY This week, our Little Paulians explored music, movement, PE and art through playful, hands-on experiences. In Music & Mindfulness, familiar songs, movement, breathing and yoga helped children find their rhythm and feel comfortable together. PE encouraged confidence as children balanced, climbed, jumped and explored our soft play area, while in Art, children discovered the many ways they could make a line using movement, mark-making and even toy car tyres. Each activity gave children the freedom to explore alongside their grown-ups, build confidence and enjoy learning through play.

SPORT & FIXTURES UPDATE WHAT AN AFTERNOON FOR SPGSI BANGKOK! Yesterday, our U11 girls took to the court against our friends from Dulwich College Bangkok for our first ever school sports match. For many of the girls, it was their first basketball match, which made the occasion even more special. They showed perseverance, supported each other with kindness and gave us so much to be proud of. The afternoon began in the changing room, with speeches and the presentation of our new school playing kit. Seeing the girls wearing their jerseys together for the first time was a proud moment and the start of something we know many more students will experience in the years ahead. Once the game began, the support was fantastic. Parents and students were loud and proud, with singing sections getting behind the girls and helping create an atmosphere that everyone could feel part of. It was wonderful to see our school community coming together and to hear so much encouragement from the sidelines. A special shout-out to Ella in Year 6, who scored SPGSI Bangkok’s first ever points with a long-range shot off the backboard. What a way to get us started. I am really proud of how the girls approached the experience. Playing your first match for a new team takes courage, especially when you are still learning the game. This was an opportunity to put the school values into practice: patience as we learn, curiosity to understand the game, respect for our teammates and opponents, and perseverance when we make mistakes. These are the qualities we want to keep building through school sport. For everyone playing, coaching and supporting, this was a special afternoon. You could feel the school spirit growing, and it was an exciting first step for sport at SPGSI Bangkok. We now look forward to our U9 boys, U9 girls and U11 boys playing their first ever fixtures over the next two weeks. It will be great to see more of our students putting on the school kit and representing St Paul’s for the first time. Thank you to Dulwich for joining us, to everyone who helped make the afternoon happen, and to our parents and students for getting behind the team. Most of all, well done to the girls. You have helped start something very special for our school. The occasion was captured by professional photographers and videographers, and we look forward to sharing the photos and videos with our community. Players of the Match: Maryn, Venik, Lily, Esme, Felicity, PJ, Daisy, Ally, Athena, Polar & Ella. Let’s Go St Paul’s! Mr Richard Head of Junior School PE

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK COMIC BOOKS: A LIBRARIAN’S BEST FRIEND One of the children said to me recently ‘Ms. Saki, it seems like you are the only adult in my life who likes comic books…’ The comment made me laugh, because their grownup had recently asked me a question I get asked countless times as a librarian: ‘Why do you let the children read comic books?’ Comic books or graphic novels are often underappreciated; adults often assume that because they are full of pictures and are presenting text in a different way, they are less ‘valid’ reading resources or that they are ‘light’ reads. But, as this article discusses so eloquently, comic books have many benefits. These include enhancing cognitive and literacy development, motivating reluctant readers to read more and representing our children’s backgrounds and being a ‘mirror’ to their experiences. The National Literacy Trust found that nearly twice as many children who read comics in their free time enjoyed reading compared to those who didn’t read comics in their free time too! So the next time anybody asks me what the validity of comic books are, then I’m going to bring them back to this Thought Leadership piece. Comic books are our friends, not foes! Ms Saki Librarian Teacher

PARENT COMMUNITY EVENTS: BRING YOUR PARENTS TO LUNCH Last Friday’s Bring Your Parents to Lunch was such a special day for our community. It was wonderful to see parents and students enjoying lunch together and spending time as a family at school. With games, activities and workshops taking place outside, there was a lovely atmosphere across campus and a real sense of community. The day also gave us an opportunity to reflect on something that is incredibly important to us: nutrition. Eating well plays a vital role in helping students maintain their energy, concentration and wellbeing throughout the school day. We want nutrition to be more than simply what is served at lunchtime. We see it as part of a child’s education. We want our students to understand what different foods do for their bodies, how to make balanced choices and why healthy habits matter. By helping children develop this understanding from a young age, we hope they will grow into confident young people who are able to make informed and healthy choices for themselves.
FEEDBACK & COMMUNITY UPDATES Thank you to everyone who continues to share feedback with us. Our full Parent Feedback Survey was sent on Thursday and will remain open for around 10 more days. We encourage all families to complete it, as your feedback helps shape the improvements we make across the school. We are already working on a number of areas raised by parents. In the ECC, for example, we have seen a noticeable improvement with mosquitoes following the additional measures put in place. We are also planning more opportunities for our parent community to get involved from October onwards. More information will be shared soon, including pickleball sessions after half term and further parent and staff sporting activities. Thank you for continuing to share your thoughts and ideas with us ISABELLE PETERS Director of Marketing & Admissions

DIGITAL LEARNING: A SHARED APPROACH Last Friday I ran Digital Learning: A Shared Approach, a workshop for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 parents on how technology is used at SPGS International. Parents worked on the iPads and Apple Pencils themselves, and saw an example of how we can use AI in lessons, with the teacher rather than the child at the controls The theme throughout was that we introduce technology slowly and deliberately. Where a non-digital tool is the better one, we use it, and the Design and Innovation department uses as many of those as it does digital ones. Our aim is for children to understand these technologies well enough to question them, to adapt to whatever comes next, and to use all of it deliberately, to do something worth doing. The conversation that followed ranged from AI to screen time to what counts as appropriate content, and it is exactly the dialogue between home and school that this topic needs. I would be glad to continue it with any parent, and there will be more workshops to come. Mr Christopher Design and Innovation Specialist
