For far too long I ran. For far too long I escaped. Used every substance around me to escape this darkness that lurked inside my unconscious.
I know when and where this toxic emotion first whispered to me. I remember the last time she manipulated me. The time she guilted me into believing things about me that were not true. I recollect it all. Even where I was told how hideous I was and that I shouldn’t show my face to the world.
Then came a moment of reckoning. A moment where I could no longer ignore this shadow that followed me. I needed to face it. I needed to sit with her, have a dialogue and ask why she was hell bent on ruining the very body, mind and soul she resided in.
But this passed. I ran again. I escaped again. And again.
Then came another moment of reckoning. This time, the need to talk stayed, and stayed strong. It consumed me. I decided to have the tough conversations. I gave myself the camera and the darkness the permission to speak to me, and through me.
She finally did.
Her name is Shame. And this is our story.
Ajay D’souza is an Indian photographer, based in Paris, France. An avid sports fan, he loves being behind the camera for sporting events, and is adept at creative documentary photography, specialising in photoreportage, personal stories, and social realities. He also devotes time to visually depict his dialogues with his various emotions.
Before deciding to dedicate himself to this craft, he has worked as a Printing Engineer, an Instructional Designer, and finally as a Creative Director at some of India’s finest advertising agencies in Bombay and Bangalore.
