BEHIND THE SCENES

AFRIQUE VODKA

Founders Beverley AnnanForson and Jayne Doherty have combined their expertise, passion and shared vision to bring something extraordinary to the world of spirits.

Interview

Honouring heritage and breaking barriers in a male dominated space

The name “Afrique” and our logo hold deep significance for us. The logo features the outline of the African continent, symbolising our pride in our roots and our commitment to celebrating our country. The vibrant colours used in the branding are inspired by the main flavour ingredients in each bottle. They reflect Africa’s beauty, vibrancy, and cultural diversity.

While Africa isn’t traditionally known for vodka production, we saw this as an exciting opportunity to challenge perceptions and introduce unique flavours to the market. Vodka’s versatility makes it the perfect canvas for innovation.

Our vodka is made from sugar beet, giving it a unique natural sweetness. By using high-quality ingredients found in Africa, we’re able to craft a distinctive product that reflects the essence of the continent.

Our journey with Afrique has taught us a few key lessons. Top of the list is authenticity. Having a clear and compelling brand story that resonates with your target audience is what will make you unique and stand out from the crowd. The decision to prioritise quality and innovation was important because we wanted to corner a space in the luxury market and produce flavours that have

never been done before. Finally, staying adaptable is key in any business – big or small. The market evolves constantly, so always be open to feedback and willing to pivot when necessary.

Traditionally the alcoholic drinks industry has been male dominated. Our drive is to break barriers and change the game. We’re here to empower and bring fresh perspectives that have been missing for too long. We’re proud to be part of a network of inspiring women who collaborate and mentor other female entrepreneurs. This has by far been on the most rewarding aspects to this journey.

Stefflon Don enters her fragrance era with the Don Beauty discovery set

British multi-platinum artist Stefflon Don has always been top-tier glam goals. With the launch of her beauty brand there’s no more guesswork in replicating her delectable swag. Debuting with a Discovery Set, a curated collection of six eau de parfums designed to suit different moods and moments, the Birminghamborn artist, who has over 11 million social media followers, says Don.Beauty's ethos centres on owning life’s “messiness” and rejecting one-size-fits-all beauty ideals. Now let’s say it in unison: “Ya dun know!”

Collectable canvas tote from Urban

They say the best things come in three, hence why Urban have added three bulk braiding textures to its line-up: Breezy a deconstructed body wave; Luscious a deep bouncy curl and Motion a defined deep wave pattern. To celebrate, you can get your hands on a Free logo emblazoned canvas tote bag. Designed for everyday use, the lightweight shopper is spacious to fit several packs of braiding hair for your next salon appointment. It really is totes amaze!

Project Afro Achiever of the Year

The Fellowship for British Hairdressing awarded Trevanna Watkins from House of Sisters salon the Project Afro Achiever of the Year Award. In a heartfelt Instagram caption, Watkins wrote: “Three years ago, I was doing hair in my sister’s shed, trying to rebuild my confidence and find my place again. I never imagined that the journey would bring me here standing on the Fellowship stage, holding this award, surrounded by people who truly believed in me.”

EVERYTHING YOU NEED

for comeback beauty

Take out your old moodboards and magazine clippings. 2026 is giving retro beauty (without the over-tweezed eyebrows).

When trends appear and disappear in the blink of an eye, it makes us long for a time when decades were defined by their aesthetic, and iconic looks lingered in our minds for months, or even years. That’s why, when we got wind of a nineties and noughties beauty revival, we were sat. Because this time around, the comeback isn’t about copying old looks wholesale; it’s about refinement… and a little bit of selective memory.

Take brows. Thin, yes, but softly reimagined. This isn’t a return to over-plucked arches that never quite recovered. Instead, we’re seeing slimmer, shaped brows with a natural curve and visible hairs. Then there are lips, doing a complete tonal U-turn. According to designers including Chloé and Conner

Ives, neon is officially back for 2026. Think electric pinks, sharp corals and highlighter-bright oranges worn confidently, not cautiously. On nails, we’re trading nudes for nickel. Barry M’s crackle polish may be discontinued (RIP), but metallics are stepping in as the grown-up successor. And finally, volume. While slicked-back buns and laid edges aren’t going anywhere, there’s a renewed appetite for hair that takes up space. Natural volume is having a moment, whether that’s a soft, boho cloud curl like Olivia Dean or a bold, beautiful Afro like cover star Imani Evans. Bigger hair equals more presence.

Call it comeback beauty, call it beauty burnout recovery – either way, this revival feels just right.

UP DOWN SPELL-OMETER

HUMAN HAIR CROCHET

The invention we never knew we needed. To think, the simple ingenuity of a thread hook has made human hair less slippery and crochet-perfect. What are the hairstylists saying? “This hair is seamless, soft and satisfying to work with!”

ACRONYM BEAUTY

K-beauty shows no sign of slowing down. Advancing from CC creams and AHA, the latest instalment is PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide).

In short, it’s the new active ingredient your skin needs to repair and regenerate.

SOFT DENIM

Stiff jeans have left the chat. According to Tibi, Stella McCartney and Acne Studios, denim has taken a relaxed and sculpted guise. We’re talking wearability without losing its structure. It’s the chic-to-comfort ratio we’ve been dreaming of.

MICRO MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness no longer needs hour-long meditations or sound baths. A mindful minute before meals or a couple of deep breaths before scrolling is sustainable while still being effective. Small pauses, big calm.

AI BEEF BATTLES

Watching bots throw shade at bots was fun for five minutes. But AI feuds? They’ve hit peak nonsense. We’re over the digital squabbles and back to real-world drama, thanks.

MADURO’S NIKE TECH TRACKSUIT SELLS OUT

The photo of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro aboard the USS Iwo Jima wearing a Nike Tech Tracksuit, triggered the grey athleisure staple to be sold out. Hmm, awkward fashion moment.

OVERLY CURATED FEEDS

Nobody cares for aesthetically pleasing beige and minimalist posts anymore. This is the era for uploading photo dumps, candid moments and less than perfect beauty.

PARTING PARALYSIS

Side parts are out, middle parts are in. Or is it the other way around? We’re all for collectively deciding that whatever frames the face best, wins. Besides, rules are made to be broken, and with a full lace wig, anything goes.

OUR RADAR

THE SEAMLESS INSTALL

Old school is now new school. That’s right, the sew-in leave-out from the noughties is out of retirement. “Leave-outs are all about creating an illusion by making hair extensions look like they’ve grown straight out of your scalp,” says Philip Eric of Philip Eric Hair. By blending a small section of your natural hair around the part or hairline, sew-ins and U-part wigs suddenly become undetectable. “It does require extra TLC (heat protection and careful styling are non-negotiable), but the payoff is a finish that looks effortless and real,” says Eric.

BIG BLONDE ENERGY

Think soft, strategic highlights that look intentional. Ladelle Robinson from Hair 305 explains where to start: “Money pieces frame the face without doing too much, while honeyed ombrés melt seamlessly into deeper roots. Ashy blondes are still a go-to for that cool-girl polish, but warmer tones are having a moment too, especially when layered with warm brown lowlights for depth.” Remember, flat blonde is out; multi-tonal is in.

FRENCH CURL FEVER

The French curl trend has been simmering since 2023. Mostly worn by our favourite influencers with a directional edge, this year expect a full-blown takeover. “This protective style blends smooth, often knotless braids at the root with silky, flowing curls that mimic a fresh blowout… minus the heat damage,” says Savanna Kelly-Smith owner of Sav Styles. Its high impact and unmatched versatility means it’s set to replace boho and goddess braids. “Long is cute, but short French curls with attitude are very fashion-girl coded,” confirms Savanna.

QUICK WEAVE BRAID BOB

Tyla-approved and social-feed ready, get set for a new-age approach to braiding installs. “What I love about this trend is that it mixes the speed of a quick weave with the structure of braids,” says Natalie Joseph lead stylist at Hype Coiffure. “It might not take as long as single plaits but achieving geometrically perfect canerows and a bob cut that has the capacity to hold a flick will take some skill,” says Natalie. Nevertheless, judging by the outcome it’s well worth the hours! We’ve seen a variety of braided looks like side parts and half-up, half-down styles with deep wave or curly extensions, but the bob length is the star of the show.

CROCHET HUMAN HAIR CRAZE

The hair gods have master-minded a new approach to protective styling and its giving bundles. Crochet human hair is pipped to replace the ubiquitous boho and goddess braids this summer and beyond. “I love how freeing and natural this style can look,” says Aisha Ibrahim, Spell Beauty brand ambassador. “It’s a celebration of wearing textured hair extensions that’s a close or an exact match to your natural curls.” To achieve this look you can use loose bulk hair or the new pre-separated strands with an invisible thread hook. Choose from moreish curl patterns like Burmese Water Wave, Spanish Curl and Afro Kinky.

EMPIRE BULK Afro Kinky Bulk, from £29.99

RICH GIRL BROWN WIGS

Whether the shade is dark or light, brown tones are always warm and flattering. “The open secret is shine: high-gloss finishes that give the luxury salon look,” says Abigail Butler L’Oréal Professionnel Artistic Educator. “Opting for a wig opens the scope for colour play. Think deep chocolate, espresso, and glossy chestnut tones with subtle ribbons of caramel or bronze to add depth and reflect light.” Whether worn bone-straight, softly curled or in loose body waves, these brunette tones read expensive without trying.

BIG VI BES

Imani Evans on why she believes confidence is something we practice and not something we’re born with.

Hair: Ultra Wig Jumbo Afro. Styling: Fauxjoli Zebra Print Bodysuit
“THE BIGGER THE HAIR, THE MORE CONFIDENT I FEEL.”

Think of a colour any colour? “Pink” beams Imani Evans. Can’t say we’re at all surprised as the 33-year-old model, influencer and reality TV star (having most recently appeared on ITV’s Tempting Fortune) documented to her 150,000 followers the transformation of her dressing room to a Barbie pink. “Your environment really makes a difference to how you feel. My dressing room used to be plain white, and I just got to a point where I felt bored, so I just thought to myself, why don’t I create the dream dressing room that I’ve always wanted?,” she explains via our zoom call. “It changed everything. Everyone should have a lot more fun with their environment and their decor.”

Whereas some influencers take on a different persona for the camera what you see is what you get with Evans. Sky high vibes. She was just as chirpy speaking to us as she is in her Instagram videos, where she promotes hair and body positivity, having fun with fashion, and lessons in self-worth.

During our chat, she demonstrates just that. In between style musings and product recommendations, she talks about her difficult battles with teen insecurities, how she protects her mental health in the public eye, and why she welcomes deep conversations with her female followers in her DMs. What becomes clear is that, beneath the pink, the polish and the platform is a woman truly aware of her influence and determined to use it well.

ONE THING THAT COMES ACROSS IN YOUR VIDEOS IS YOUR BIG, POSITIVE ENERGY. HOW DO YOU KEEP THIS UP EVEN ON DAYS WHERE YOU FEEL LESS MOTIVATED?

We all have those days where you’re just not really feeling your best. I think it’s very natural. It’s important not to be too hard on yourself and treat yourself kindly. If I am having a day where I’m not feeling up to it, then I just allow myself to take time to watch TV or go to the spa or just cook a healthy meal. I’m very good at paying attention to what I need, and whatever I need is a priority to me. I’m a big believer in resting as well. I think that everyone should prioritise that, because there’s nothing worse than burnout.

REALITY TV CAN COME WITH A LOT OF PRESSURE AND SCRUTINY. HOW DO YOU PROTECT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN THE PUBLIC EYE?

The most important thing that you can ever do in life is work on your confidence, because when you’re truly

self-assured and happy with who you are, outside pressures and scrutiny don’t really stick. It’s all about liking yourself first, and then if other people find a way to bond with you as well, that’s a beautiful plus. But it shouldn’t be the be all and end all. You shouldn’t make decisions for your life based on what other people think.

WHEN DO YOU FEEL YOUR MOST CONFIDENT?

I feel my most confident when my afro is at its fullest and healthiest. Afro hair in itself is a natural wonder. Well, that’s how I see it. And even though I’ve had natural hair my whole life, it never fails to amaze me. So, when I have my big afro, I feel good, I feel excited, because I love my hair. The bigger the hair, the more confident I feel.

WOULD YOU SAY YOU HAVE A ‘THICK SKIN’? AND IF SO, HOW DID YOU DEVELOP IT?

This is interesting, because I think when you’re a confident person, people

assume that you have a very thick skin. But I wouldn’t say that I have a thick skin; I’m sensitive. But what I do have is a high self-image and a deep knowing that I deserve to be treated how I treat others. That’s with kindness. Anything less than that, I shield myself from. I’m just a softie who’s willing to stick up for myself.

AS SOMEONE WHO TALKS ABOUT FASHION, BEAUTY AND EMPOWERMENT IN YOUR CONTENT, WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE YOUR FOLLOWERS TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR PLATFORM?

I want women to know that it’s perfectly okay to live confidently and joyfully. Life can be so heavy, but when people watch my content, I want them to feel light. I want them to smile. I want them to feel inspired. I want them to follow their heart’s desires. So, if you want to paint your dressing room pink, you should absolutely do that. If you want to go on solo trips, you should absolutely do that. I want people to understand

“AS HUMAN BEINGS, I THINK WE FOLLOW RULES A LITTLE BIT TOO MUCH.”

that there doesn’t need to be strict rules in life, because I’ve personally always rejected rigid rules. I can actually wear my natural hair and a big afro if I want. I can wear six-inch gold platform heels on a Wednesday, if I want. I just want to encourage people to live freely.

YOUR CONTENT ALSO CHAMPIONS BODY POSITIVITY. WAS THERE EVER A TIME WHERE YOU WEREN’T SO BODY CONFIDENT, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?

Absolutely. I used to have body image issues, just like most people have dealt with. As a teenager, I was very self-conscious about my boobs. I’m a 32HH. At the age of 14, I was already wearing my mum’s bras, and I was very self-conscious about it. I used to wrap a towel around myself in the sauna, because I’d be paranoid that people were looking or talking about me.

Then gradually I started to really look at how I was treating myself. I was acting like my natural body was an issue, and I thought about how sad it was that I was treating myself so harshly. My natural

skin, my natural boobs—I hated them so much that I was petrified of people seeing them. It got to a point where I said I am not doing this anymore. I think it’s important to take time to sit

with yourself, because you can have an awakening, and that’s exactly what I had. I just started rebelling against my own negativity, and then everything changed. Suddenly, I was finding this confidence in myself. Now, I can’t get my legs out enough. I wear the shortest skirts on the planet, even though the stretch marks haven’t disappeared. They’re very much still there, but I’m not ashamed of them anymore.

HOW DO YOUR FOLLOWERS RESPOND TO YOUR RADICAL SELF-LOVE?

I receive so many beautiful messages from women all over the world telling me, “I love the fact that you wear your natural hair. It makes me feel like I can wear mine... I love the fact that you embrace your natural boobs... I love the fact that you’re so confident in how you dress”. I think we all need to support each other, because we’re all humans going through the exact same thing.

I’ve made so many online friends. Sometimes my DMs are like therapy sessions, and I welcome it every time. I’ve got a lot of time for my audience, and I love encouraging them. I want to see all women living joyfully and freely. So as much as I can help with that, I absolutely will.

DOUBLE CLEANSE

Skin experts swear by double cleansing to rid your skin of impurities and create a fresh base for overnight products to work their magic. Dr. Saba Raja, awardwinning aesthetics doctor and founder of The Home of Aesthetics Clinic, says, “Makeup, SPF and pollution particles can clog pores and contribute to uneven tone. Start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve impurities, then follow with a gentle, hydrating, waterbased cleanser to keep skin hydrated and balanced.”

COMBAT

HYPERPIGMENTATION

Hyperpigmentation is ideal for targeting during sleep, as your skin is not being exposed to UV light (which exacerbates hyperpigmentation). In addition, cell turnover is higher at night, which means active ingredients can penetrate more effectively and work in harmony with your skin’s natural processes to fade dark spots. Dr. Inna Szalontay, dermatologist and founder of Libi & Daughters, recommends using serums “rich in tranexamic acid, as it inhibits melanin production and helps reduce pigmentation.”

HYDRATE AND LOCK IN MOISTURE

During the night, transepidermal water loss (the process where water naturally evaporates from the skin) increases. Without hydration, skin can become dry, tight and more prone to irritation. Dr. Raja explains, “Melaninrich skin can be more prone to transepidermal water loss. Look for hyaluronic acid or glycerin to draw water in, and use ceramides to strengthen the barrier and seal moisture overnight.”

CARE FOR YOUR UNDEREYES

If you’re using just one cream for your whole face, it may be working against you. Dr. Szalontay warns, “The under eye area needs dedicated creams. Incorrect formulas can interfere with lymphatic flow and cause morning puffiness."

Switch off blue light-emitting devices

Blue light emitted from screens can negatively impact the skin through oxidative stress, which can accelerate ageing by breaking down collagen and may worsen hyperpigmentation. Limiting screen time before bedtime, allows your skin’s natural repair mechanisms to work effectively."

1 hour before bed

Begin your skincare routine

Dr. Szalontay says, “I'd recommend starting your night-time skin routine about one hour to 90 minutes before going to bed, which prevents morning puffiness and allows skincare products to settle and work most effectively overnight. Going to bed by 10pm also helps maximise your skin's repair window. Late nights will show in the morning.”

CALVIN RATTRAY HYPE

COIFFURE FOUNDER

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST “WHAT AM I DOING?!” MOMENT IN THE EARLY DAYS?

Signing the lease. The second the pen hit the paper, reality set in. No turning back, no safety net... Just me and the vision. The first day building the Balham salon, I had the materials but none of the workers turned up, so I spent the day sitting on a pile of cardboard wondering what I was going to do, but thankfully it all worked out.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES CLIENTS KEEP COMING BACK?

Consistency, trust, and genuine connection. Great hair gets them in the door, and above all, how we make them feel keeps them coming back.

IF YOU COULD GIVE 1995 CALVIN ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Relax! You don’t have to have everything figured out. Trust your instincts, back yourself sooner, and maybe stress a little less. I would say that because of how the salon was created my planning was short term, so I’d make a medium to long term plan to solidify the foundations.

I have a grounded faith that guides every touch and every transformation.

5IVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

WHAT KEEPS YOU EXCITED ABOUT HAIR, DAY AFTER DAY?

Being consistent and producing high quality work over many years in the hairdressing industry.

WHAT’S THE BEST COMPLIMENT A CLIENT CAN GIVE YOU?

WHICH PROJECT MADE YOU THINK, “YEP, THIS IS WHY I DO THIS”?

WHAT’S THE ONE THING CELEBRITY CLIENTS AND SALON CLIENTS HAVE IN COMMON?

They all want to feel confident, understood and seen. Celebrity or not, everyone wants that “Oh wow... that’s me!” moment.

WHAT DOES BEING “SULTANIZED” ACTUALLY FEEL LIKE?

The coined phrase to be “sultanized” means to feel like luxury. It’s textured hair being celebrated, not controlled. It’s expert knowledge, powerful tools, and results that last through humidity, and the dancefloor at 3am. It’s also knowing you’re in the hands of a stylist who spends her life championing textured hair.

WHICH CAREER MOMENT STILL MAKES YOU SMILE THE MOST?

I saw how doing hair could rebuild self-esteem and change how a woman walked back out into the world. I remember thinking, “If I can be part of giving women that level of confidence and happiness, then this is where I belong.” Years later, walking into Hype Coiffure as a young stylist confirmed it. I wanted to be part of textured hair excellence and. And now, celebrating Hype’s 30 years.

Children’s author and illustrator

Zenovia Grant explains why she loves drawing hairstyles and how we can find peace in our passions

WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNING A NEW CHARACTER, WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION?

Being a mother of four children and working in schools as a behavior lead, I’m in a space of constant inspiration. Also, when you have a storyline that carries a deep level of enrichment it oozes information for the intention to the design. When it comes to the hair that’s where I have the most fun. I tap into the hairdresser part of my brain and let my imagination run free. My mission is to represent everyone. Growing up in an area filled with estates you see the world through all lenses.

THEY SAY DON’T TURN YOUR PASSION INTO A JOB. DO YOU THINK THAT’S TRUE?

I really think it depends. For me illustration is more than a passion, it’s a sense of peace. It silences my mind. My advice is to not saturate yourself; meaning don’t tip the balance too far

where the thing you love becomes the thing that makes you lose your peace.

SELF-PUBLISHING HAS EXPLODED. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT GOING DOWN THIS ROUTE?

I think the biggest one is that it’s not possible to have distribution and get into book shops. You must get creative and think outside the box. There are schemes that provide books through subscriptions, and you can approach independent indie bookshops. Another misconception is anyone can do it. In principle that’s right but it’s doesn’t mean all will be successful. Self-publishing is expensive, from sourcing editors, illustrators, focus groups barcodes, print runs etc. Those incurred costs can’t be taken lightly.

WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU DOODLED FOR FUN?

It was a cat stealing chicken off the side to eat it. I love to play around with compositional pieces.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO ASPIRING ARTISTS?

Keep creating! Whatever your median is just keep creating and be intentional! The difference in my skills and understanding after two years has been crazy. Sign up to programmes that hold you to account, keep be purposeful with your creation and see how far you can push it.

TAXED FOR BEING YOU, SIS

Economist and author of The Double Tax Anna Gifty OpokuAgyeman unpacks how much it costs to be a woman, why the bill runs higher for women of colour, and how closing the gaps moves us all forward

Being a woman comes with financial costs. This we know! The theoretical pink tax may be the most visible example where women are flagrantly charged triple the price for basic toiletries (like deodorant) compared to those who inherited the Y chromosome. For women of colour there’s an additional tax; one economist, activist and US-based writer Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman calls the double tax – the compounded cost of racism and sexism. “Women’s lives aren’t just defined by gender inequality; they’re also defined by other forms of inequality, such as race and class,” explains Opoku-Agyeman.

In her new book The Double Tax, Opoku-Agyeman speaks to hundreds of women about the unequal burden they face simply by living their life. Through the lens of mothers, professionals, carers and more, she exposes the true cost of womanhood, and most poignantly the impact it has on women of colour.

As we enter the new year, we ask Opoku-Agyeman how we can navigate our way to a financial future that’s less taxing and more rewarding both mentally and emotionally.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MOST FINANCIALLY DAMAGING “DOUBLE TAXES” THAT WOMEN FACE TODAY?

It really depends on where you are in life. If we’re talking about what double tax is felt by most Black women, I’d say you really feel it in the hair and beauty industry. In the UK, one in five Black women feel pressure to straighten their hair for work. A service that can cost over £150. The other double taxes I mention throughout the book surround motherhood, caregiving, professional life, and retirement.

MANY WOMEN OF COLOUR EARN LESS, SAVE LESS, AND RETIRE WITH LESS. WHAT PRACTICAL STEPS CAN WOMEN TAKE RIGHT NOW TO CLOSE THEIR OWN WEALTH GAP?

Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman, economist and author THE DOUBLE TAX: How Women of Colour Are Overcharged and Underpaid, £16.99

WHAT IS THE PINK TAX?

An invisible tariff that’s added to many goods in beauty and health aimed at women, from sanitary products to hair service.

THE MOTHERHOOD PENALTY AND THE “CARE TAX” ARE STILL MAJOR OBSTACLES TODAY. WHAT KIND OF POLICY CHANGES OR WORKPLACE REFORMS DO YOU BELIEVE WOULD MAKE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE FOR WORKING MOTHERS?

Transparency and community are extremely important. If you’re in full-time employment joining a union is vital if you want to save more, earn more, and hopefully retire with more. Find your tribe and talk to other women about finances. This

can be your sister, cousin, friend or colleague. Discussing the topic head on breaks down barriers and relieves the mental burden. We underestimate that it takes a village to accomplish our goals in the long-term. I’ve seen this picking up speed online, where people come together to fund somebody’s educational path or invest in somebody’s business. We can be more resourceful about how we build wealth because many structures are, quite frankly, built to derail our ability to build wealth.

I understand that in the UK you pay quite a bit in taxes. Even women who are well-off seem to spend thousands on childcare per year. Having more quality public childcare options with resources channeled toward children from all backgrounds, especially from low-income and underserved areas, can pay off in the long run.

Workplaces also need to be intentional about seeing mothers as human. What happens is that women are punished for choosing motherhood because society asks us to do this, then says, “Actually, no, you’re not productive anymore. We don’t want to pay you, hire you, or promote you.” That’s an unfair burden to place on women. That stigma around being a mother needs to disappear, and it begins with being open about how those costs manifest in the workplace.

CAN YOU SHARE ANY PERSONAL STORIES FROM WOMEN YOU INTERVIEWED WHEN WRITING YOUR BOOK THAT PARTICULARLY SHAPED YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE DOUBLE TAX OPERATES DAY TO DAY?

So, we put out a call across several platforms – social media, LinkedIn, women’s organisations – and heard back from about 4,000 people. We then narrowed it down to 100 random individuals because that’s all we had time and resources to interview.

We spoke primarily to Black and Caucasian women. These women tend to exist on the extremes based on the data. It was interesting to hear what emerged. White women shared that they deal with many patriarchal norms in the workplace; for example, unfair expectations, lack of promotion, unsupportive behavior and so on. Interestingly, Black women deal with the same issues except with a racist twist.

All women deal with non-actionable feedback, but much of the feedback given to White women strikes a positive tone, whereas Black women are villainized. What was even more interesting to learn is that while White women deal with the patriarchy, Black women deal with both the patriarchy and White women. New research from Harvard has shown White women can also become another barrier for Black women in the workplace too.

MANY WOMEN OF COLOUR ARE TURNING TO SIDE HUSTLES TO BUILD FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE. DO YOU SEE THIS AS AN EFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO SYSTEMIC INEQUITIES, OR DOES IT RISK PLACING MORE BURDEN ON INDIVIDUALS TO “WORK AROUND” BROKEN SYSTEMS?

Wherever you find yourself –in corporate, government, or entrepreneurship – the double tax will be there because racism and sexism are pumped through the veins of our society globally.

The reality is women of colour face many barriers when raising capital and running businesses. People don’t trust us, they don’t believe us, and that has implications for how we’re treated.

The announcement from the founder of Plant Made, Ama Amo-Agyei illustrates this. Ama shared that she was pushed out of the next phase of a business she had started with her family because the investors no longer valued her insights. It is my hope that this will be the beginning for her, considering that just a few short weeks after Ami Cole founder of Diarrha N’Diaye was appointed to lead Beauty at Skims.

HOW CAN POTENTIAL ALLIES (I.E., EMPLOYERS OR POLICYMAKERS) ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO DISMANTLING THE DOUBLE TAX, RATHER THAN SIMPLY ACKNOWLEDGING IT?

Allies must put their money where their mouth is. There’s a lot of cheap talk happening right now, especially in the current climate where there’s really no incentive to double down on diversity, equity, and inclusion or to support Black-owned, women of colour, and minority-owned initiatives.

My book lays out clear ways that allies can show up in a number of different arenas. They should be actively investing in how to sustain and build up systems that support vulnerable communities, rather than a one-time effort.

THERE’S GROWING CONVERSATION AROUND COMMUNITY-BASED WEALTH BUILDING, LIKE CO-OPS, MUTUAL AID, OR COLLECTIVE INVESTING. DO YOU THINK THESE MODELS COULD HELP COUNTERACT THE EFFECTS OF THE DOUBLE TAX?

In this current era of politics and the cost-of-living crisis, we are all we’ve got. Expecting people in power to course-correct and care meaningfully about us when they have no incentive to do so is a fool’s errand.

When we think about the most successful and long-lasting communities in our world, this is how they operate, through a medium of community. Right now, in the States, people who can’t afford food rely on food banks and churches having free food available. This is what it looks like people show up for their neighbours. Because that’s all we’ve got.

That is why the double tax is fundamentally an issue of empathy. Many people are apathetic about the state of the world and their fellow neighbours. Take care of each other is the social contract we must have.

LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT GIVES YOU HOPE THAT THE FINANCIAL LANDSCAPE FOR WOMEN WILL LOOK FAIRER AND MORE EQUITABLE IN THE NEXT DECADE?

For me, what gives me hope is that the next generation isn’t happy with this level of injustice. I saw recently that Billie Eilish was in a room full of wealthy people at the Wall Street Journal, and she asked the audience, “Why are you a billionaire?” It’s a very simple question, but it challenges people’s ethics, morals, and priorities. If you’re a billionaire and somebody next to you is starving, why are you a billionaire? What’s driving your need to accrue wealth relentlessly? The next generation is asking these questions loudly, boldly, and without fail. There’s a conversation happening with Gen Z and Gen Alpha about “Wait, things aren’t fair. Why aren’t things fair? Why are my friends having a harder time finding food and groceries day-to-day? What can I do to make it better?”
