490 Series – Power Steering Assembly Instructions Tools: Vice Vice Jaws Hose Cutters Lubricant Tapered Mandrel Open End Spanner

Step 1: Prepare the Hose •

Select the correct size hose for the fittings and measure to the desired length.

This can be easily cut using Speedflow’s hose cutters (432-12).

Make sure the cut is square, and any residue is trimmed and cleaned.

Step 2: Lubricate the Assembly •

Liberally lubricate the threads of the socket and the hose end nipple using: o

A heavy-weight engine oil, or Speedflow’s Assembly Lube (SF-LUBE).

Proper lubricant reduces friction during assembly and prevents galling of the aluminium parts.

Step 3: Prepare the Socket and Hose •

Ensure the hose is round.

Place the socket on the vice jaws and secure the vice to the socket.

Insert the hose into the socket, screwing anti-clockwise (left) until it bottoms out.

Turn the hose clockwise (right) and stop between 90 and 180 degrees to allow for hose expansion.

Step 4: Prepare with a Mandrel •

Remove the assembly from the vice and replace it with a tapered mandrel, such as Speedflow’s 490-TOOL.

Lubricate the mandrel, then insert into the hose. o

This step ensures the hose is round and allows the hose end nipple to insert easier.
