“Welcome, Ski Season!” Snoqualmie Pass Springs to Life After Surprise Snowfall

Winter arrived almost overnight in the Cascades this week, breathing new life into Snoqualmie Pass and delivering a long-awaited start to ski season after one of the most unpredictable early winters in recent memory.

Following weeks of rain, warm temperatures, and storm related closures, a surprise snowfall blanketed the mountains and dropped temperatures enough to finally stabilize conditions. Interstate 90 reopened after crews cleared snow and addressed lingering impacts from flooding and landslides, restoring a vital east west travel

corridor and reopening access to one of the region’s most popular winter recreation areas.

For many Seattle area skiers and snowboarders, the sudden change felt almost surreal. Just days earlier, rain had washed away snowpack and kept lifts idle. The fresh snowfall quickly transformed the landscape, turning brown slopes white and signaling that winter was ready to make a proper debut.

Washington State Department of Transportation crews worked extended hours to plow lanes, monitor avalanche conditions, and stabilize slopes that had been weakened during recent storms. Officials cautioned that while the pass is open, winter travel conditions can change quickly and drivers should continue to check forecasts and road reports before heading into the mountains.

At the ski areas along Snoqualmie Pass, crews moved quickly to take advantage of the new conditions. Groomers were deployed, lifts prepared for operation, and snowmaking systems were brought back online where temperatures allowed. While only limited terrain is open for now, resort officials say the snowfall provided a critical base that sets the stage for further openings as winter progresses.

The delayed start has been frustrating for both recreationists and mountain communities that rely on winter tourism. Traditionally, early December marks a dependable start to the season at Snoqualmie Pass. In recent years, however, warmer temperatures and heavier rain events have become more common, compressing ski seasons and forcing operators to adapt on the fly. This year’s early winter has been particularly challenging.

Flooding Compounds Seasonal Blood Donation Challenges Across Washington

December is already one of the most challenging months of the year for maintaining a stable blood supply, and this winter’s severe weather has made the situation even more difficult.

According to Bloodworks Northwest, widespread flooding across the region has significantly disrupted blood donation efforts at a time when supplies are typically stretched thin due to the holidays.

Bloodworks Northwest supplies blood to more than 90 hospitals across Washington and northern Oregon, including medical centers serving Seattle, Queen Anne, Magnolia, and the greater Puget Sound region. While much of the recent flooding has occurred south of Seattle, the impact is regional, affecting hospitals and patients throughout Western Washington.

The organization says historic flooding tied to an ongoing atmospheric river has forced more than 430 cancellations of potential blood donations since December 11. Those cancellations include the evacuation of Bloodworks Northwest’s Renton Lab and Renton Donor Center following a breach of the Green River levee earlier this week. The evacuation alone resulted

in the loss of dozens of scheduled donations, further straining an already tight system.

“These cancellations have created a severe shortfall, especially of Type O negative blood, which is at emergency low levels,” Bloodworks Northwest said in a statement. “This comes at a critical time when donations decline in the busy holiday season, and the blood shortage intensifies.”

Lessons from 2025

As we roll into 2026, it’s a good time to reflect on what to take with us and what to let go.

For instance, I am slowly learning my lesson about collector-itis. My typical

Erica Browne Grivas Get Growing

response is “Another color of abutilon/daffodil/tomato/ dahlia/zinnia? Yes please!” Buying one of everything makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. It’s fun but has drawbacks as a design style. Might it not be better to learn how to really grow one or two types of something well, than to try to grow them all? I may never discover the answer to that, but I suspect, yes.

While the garden seems like an all-you-can-eat buffet when you’re in the haze of buying seeds or plants – particularly online – its space and sunlight are finite, as are your time and energy. Those 12 dahlias you

swore would fit grow four feet each in months.

Yet occasionally, there are times when you can sense progress.

This fall, when it was time to refresh my window box, I was very proud of myself. I chose a white, yellow, and silver palette – not thrilling or sophisticated, but one that will go with my front door – and stuck to it. I included heuchera and carex for evergreen interest spiced up with annual violas and pansies. Then I added repeats of the same plant at the nursery for cohesion. In the process I had to ignore the black or velvet red violas, hot pink cyclamen, red chrysanthemum and purple cabbages.

In fact, when I realized the Carex testacea I bought really wasn’t working with the rosy-red bricks, I used Carex ‘Evergold’ instead. (I planted the C. Testacea in containers off to the side.) The silver comes from Dusty Miller and an ornamental cabbage and is repeated as veining in the green leaves of Heuchera ‘Paris,’ whose rosy flowers will echo the bricks come summer. That’s the plan, anyway. When it was time to add some spring bulbs, I checked they were perennial and in the palette. I divided a zombie primrose that had lived a whole year and was still blooming, as well as a perennial Gillia capitata, a wildflower that forms a tiny mat of evergreen foliage, topped with

teeny blue ball-shaped flowers in spring. Both were spread into the window boxes for greater repetition.

Sometimes – if you’re lucky–you can make spontaneous purchases look planned. Along with the ones mentioned above, Echinacea is another family I happily collect and added at least two more this year. Because I had bought some new containers there was room for them.

I tucked Echinacea ‘Kismet Orange’ in the pot alongside another impulse purchase, Carex tussock sedge, which will have a lovely pink toned flower. When its listed out like this it really seems excessive. We love a happy discovery. This year they came in the form of specialty annuals. I grew some myself, through winter sowing (milk jugs/plastic tubs outdoors) and seed snails. Then I bought a few at Sky Nursery which carries Langley Annuals from Vashon Island and snagged some at the debut Slow Flowers/ Growers Market Sale in May where flower farmers sold

WHY DECEMBER IS ALREADY A DIFFICULT MONTH

Even in a typical year, December presents unique challenges for blood collection. Donation rates tend to drop as people travel, attend holiday gatherings, or become ill with seasonal viruses. Mobile blood drives hosted at schools, offices, and community spaces are often paused during winter breaks, reducing the number of opportunities to donate. At the same time, hospital demand does not slow down. Blood is needed every day for trauma patients, people undergoing cancer treatment, premature babies, and individuals facing complications during surgery or childbirth. Blood cannot be manufactured, and its limited shelf life means supplies must be constantly replenished.

BLOOD DONATION, 3

starts of their favorite cut flower annuals.

Here are the standouts I’d grow again – and the one I wouldn’t:

Didiscus (Blue lace flower) - Trachymene coerulea, which looks like Queen Anne’s Lace was painted hydrangea blue. It’s a great cut flower, repeated bloom several times when cut, and is a great contender for winter sowing. It likes to be sown 4-6 weeks before last frost.

Echibeckia ‘Summerina Glow Sugar Shake’- this is the fluffy-headed perennial lovechild cross of rudbeckia and echinacea that only reaches 18 inches high. It lasted over seven days in the vase with melon, chartreuse and bronzyred flowers. Happy in containers, I look forward to seeing it again next year.

Feverfew ‘Magic Lime’ – another winter sowing success, this was late to bloom (August) but bowled me over with its go-with everything chartreuse flowers.

Savvy Senior: Chair Yoga: Safe, Simple, and Beneficial for Older Adults

Dear Savvy Senior,

I’ve been hearing a lot about chair yoga lately. My New Year’s resolution is to improve my health and get moving again, but I have trouble getting down on the floor. What can you tell me about this type of yoga?

—Arthritic Abby

Dear Abby,

If you’re looking for a safe way to get active again but find traditional exercise routines difficult, chair yoga may be the perfect fit.

Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that’s done either sitting on a chair or using the chair for support while standing. It adapts traditional yoga poses so they’re accessible to people who may have limited mobility, balance issues, or difficulty getting down on the floor.

This practice helps improve flexibility, strength, and balance, boosts circulation and mobility, and promotes relaxation while reducing stress. This makes it an effective and safe way to stay active and support overall well-being at any age.

A typical chair yoga session begins with simple seated postures, such as gentle twists, stretches for the arms and legs, or movements that open the hips and shoulders. These exercises loosen stiff joints, improve posture, and increase flexibility in areas of the body that often become tight with age.

It can also include standing poses like modified lunges or gentle balance work,

BLOOD DONATION

Red blood cells can be stored for about 42 days, while platelets, which are critical for cancer patients, last only five days. When donation opportunities are lost in large numbers, especially during December, inventories can take weeks to recover.

FLOODING TURNS A SEASONAL DIP INTO AN EMERGENCY

This winter’s flooding has turned what is normally a seasonal dip into an emergency situation. Road closures, evacuations, and unsafe travel conditions have prevented donors from reaching donation centers and forced Bloodworks Northwest to cancel blood drives outright.

The impact is especially severe for Type O negative blood, which is considered the universal blood type and is often used in emergencies when a patient’s blood type is unknown. Emergency low levels of O negative blood can limit hospitals’ ability to respond quickly to trauma cases.

Flooding can also increase demand. Weatherrelated accidents, cleanup injuries, and evacuationrelated incidents can all lead to a greater need for transfusions, placing additional pressure on already limited supplies.

with the chair always nearby for stability. Breathing exercises are often incorporated throughout the practice, encouraging participants to slow down, deepen their breath, and cultivate a sense of calm. Sessions usually end with a short period of guided relaxation or meditation, leaving participants refreshed and grounded.

TO GET STARTED

HOW

To get started, you just need a sturdy chair without wheels and preferably without arms, and some comfortable clothes. The goal with chair yoga is to stretch, not cause pain. So go only as far as feels comfortable and don’t push beyond your limits.

SEATTLE-AREA HOSPI

TALS FEEL THE RIPPLE EFFECTS

Hospitals throughout Seattle and King County rely on Bloodworks Northwest to manage blood supply logistics and ensure blood is available when needed. When inventories drop, hospitals may be forced to delay non-emergency procedures or carefully prioritize limited supplies for the most critical cases. While patients may never see these behindthe-scenes decisions, the availability of blood directly affects patient outcomes. Maintaining a stable supply depends on donors across the region stepping forward, particularly after disruptions like flooding.

Bloodworks Northwest notes that community response after emergencies is often strong, but timing matters. Donations are needed as soon as conditions allow, not weeks later.

SAFETY COMES FIRST

Bloodworks Northwest emphasizes that donor safety remains the top priority. Residents should not attempt to travel through flooded areas or unsafe road conditions to donate. Appointments can be rescheduled, and donation centers adjust operations based on access and weather conditions.

Once roads are clear and travel is safe,

donating as soon as possible helps stabilize inventories and prevent further shortages.

HOW QUEEN ANNE AND MAGNOLIA RESIDENTS CAN HELP

Bloodworks Northwest says donors of all blood types are urgently needed to keep hospitals stocked with blood for cancer patients, trauma cases, and premature babies across the region.

Community members who are healthy and able to safely reach a donor center or blood drive are encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible. Same-day appointments are often available.

Residents can schedule a donation by visiting bloodworksnw.org or by calling 800-398-7888. Appointments can also be made by texting BWAPP to 999-777 to download the Bloodworks app and book directly.

Those whose appointments were canceled due to flooding are encouraged to reschedule once conditions improve. Even one donation can help save up to three lives, making blood donation one of the most direct ways Queen Anne and Magnolia residents can support the broader community during the busy holiday season and ongoing flood recovery.

If possible, consider joining a local chair yoga class. Many local senior centers, YMCAs, and community recreation centers offer chair yoga as part of their wellness or fitness programs. Some yoga studios and gyms may offer gentle yoga or chair yoga too. And if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may be able to access classes for free through SilverSneakers.com.

If attending an in-person class isn’t an option, you can also practice chair yoga at home. There are chair yoga apps and many videos you can access on YouTube to guide you through a routine.

Repeated atmospheric river systems brought heavy rainfall instead of snow, leading to widespread flooding in western Washington and triggering landslides that disrupted travel throughout the Cascades. The return of colder weather has provided some relief, but meteorologists note that variability is becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Despite the challenges, the mood on the mountain this week was noticeably optimistic. Parking lots filled again, lift lines returned, and the familiar rhythm of winter recreation resumed. For many locals, Snoqualmie Pass is the most accessible mountain escape, offering a chance to ski or snowboard without committing to a multi day trip.

Travelers planning visits in the coming days are encouraged to prepare for changing conditions. Carrying tire chains when required, allowing extra travel time, and checking both resort and highway updates remain essential steps. Officials also remind visitors to respect posted closures and follow all safety guidance as crews continue to manage early season terrain. While the season’s start may have been delayed, the surprise snowfall has reset expectations and renewed excitement. If colder temperatures continue, ski operators say more terrain could open in the weeks ahead, offering hope for a strong mid to late winter.

Travelers planning visits in the coming days are encouraged to prepare for changing conditions. Traction tires are advised, and drivers should be prepared to carry chains when required, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions before heading over Snoqualmie Pass. Officials note that winter weather can shift quickly, particularly following recent storms. For now, the message from Snoqualmie Pass is a welcome one. Winter is back, the slopes are alive again, and ski season has officially arrived in the Cascades.

CHAIR EXERCISE OPTIONS

As an alternative to chair yoga, there are chair exercises you can add to your routine that can help improve strength and balance, reduce joint pain and prevent falls. To execute some of these exercises, you’ll need some resistance equipment like light dumbbells, water bottles, soup cans or resistance bands.

• Sit-to-stand: For this exercise, sit at the edge of the chair, feet hip-width apart. Stand up without using your hands, then slowly sit back down. Use hands lightly on the chair or use a walker or cane if needed for support.

• Seated marches: Sit tall and alternate lifting one knee at a time toward your chest.

• Seated bicep curls: With elbows tucked in, curl weights towards shoulders, then lower with control.

• Seated overhead press: Press weights overhead from shoulder height, then slowly lower.

• Seated leg extensions: Extend one leg straight out and hold for 2-3 seconds, then lower and repeat.

• Heel raises: Lift heels off the floor, pause, and lower back down.

For noticeable benefits, these exercises should be performed at least three days a week, doing three sets of 8 to 12 repetitions.

Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

It’s a perfect bouquet filler, and it’s a short-lived perennial in Zones 5-9. Lisianthus – this one was ‘Champagne’ and looked like a foam-colored rose with a vase life over 10 days. There are several groups of lisianthus (aka prairie gentian) and unfortunately this stunner blooms only in early summer. It was a favorite, but also a temptation never to be repeated. It’s an F1 hybrid so I can’t save the seed, and even if I bought seed, it takes 130 days to mature started indoors in January. Goodbye dear lisianthus – I’ll happily buy you at the farmer’s market.

“What other lessons did I learn? Label everything twice, especially the dahlias. ”

Sweet Pea (Lathyrus) ‘Miss Wilmott’ – although not in my usual color wheelhouse, ‘Miss Wilmott’s in-your-face magenta will not be denied. An heirloom vine from the 1900’s, she was the best bloomer in my patch this summer and sported a distinctive fruity scent I loved.

Zinnia ‘Cupcakes Pink’ – this charming mix of singles and double Scabiosa-type flowers comes in every range of rosy, pink, including stripes that look like antique tea-towels. It tops out at only 30” tall, so it’s easy to fit in, especially if you favor cramscaping. Planted at the feet of tomato plants, mine are bursting out from under their (now vanquished) oppressors and still blooming in November with nary a spot of mildew. What other lessons did I learn? Label everything twice, especially the dahlias. Set alarms so you don’t spend so much time watering the tomatoes and dahlias that you forget to harvest the sweet pea seeds in time or order bulbs. Maybe 2026 will be the year of mindful abundance –including appreciating the abundance already in the garden.

How Seattleites Can Shrink Their Plastic Bags Eco Footprints

Staff Report

Plastic shopping bags may no longer be handed out freely at store checkouts, but they have not disappeared from daily life. Thicker “reusable” plastic bags, forgotten bags purchased in a pinch, and bags that never quite get reused enough continue to add to household waste. For Seattleites who want to reduce their environmental footprint, plastic bags remain one of the simplest and most visible places to start.

The good news is that meaningful reductions do not require perfection or dramatic lifestyle changes. When it comes to plastic bags, consistency matters far more than ideals.

USE FEWER BAGS BY PLANNING WHERE THEY LIVE

One of the biggest reasons people still buy plastic bags is simple forgetfulness. The most effective solution is assigning reusable bags a permanent home.

For many households, that means keeping a small set of bags in the car, tucked into a backpack, or hanging near the front door. In walkable neighborhoods, bags that live near shoes or coats tend to get used more than bags stored deep in a pantry.

“ The goal is not to own more reusable bags, but to use the same few repeatedly.”

The goal is not to own more reusable bags, but to use the same few repeatedly. A bag used hundreds of times has a much smaller footprint than one used once or twice and forgotten.

CHOOSE DURABILITY OVER NOVELTY

Not all reusable bags are created equal. Thin plastic “reusable” bags often sold at checkout counters are easy to tear and frequently end up in the trash after minimal use. Sturdier cloth or woven bags last longer and reduce the need for replacement.

Residents who already have a collection of bags can shrink their footprint simply by retiring the flimsiest ones and committing to a small rotation of durable favorites. Fewer bags, used more often, leads to less plastic overall.

SAY NO TO BAGS WHEN YOU DO NOT NEED THEM

One of the simplest habits to adopt is declining a bag entirely when it is unnecessary. Carrying a single item, a carton of milk, or a loaf of bread does not always require a bag, especially for short walks home.

In neighborhoods where many errands are done on foot, skipping a bag when practical can significantly reduce plastic use over time. It may feel awkward at first, but it quickly becomes second nature.

REUSE BAGS INTENTIONALLY AT HOME

When plastic bags do make it into the house, using them intentionally extends their life.

Reusing bags as trash liners, pet waste bags, or storage helps offset the environmental cost of their production. However, intentional reuse is different from accumulation. A drawer full of unused plastic bags represents wasted material. Setting a limit on how many bags are kept and recycling or returning the rest helps prevent clutter and unnecessary waste.

RETURN PLASTIC BAGS TO PROPER RECYCLING LOCATIONS

Plastic bags should not go into curbside recycling bins, where they can tangle machinery and contaminate loads. Many grocery stores offer plastic bag return bins specifically designed for film plastics.

Making bag returns part of a regular routine, such as dropping them off during grocery trips, helps keep them out of landfills and waterways. While recycling is not a perfect solution, proper handling prevents additional harm.

AVOID IMPULSE BAG PURCHASES

Buying a bag at checkout “just this once” is one of the most common ways plastic bags continue circulating. The environmental cost of those impulse purchases adds up quickly, especially when the bag is used only a few times.

Building the habit of walking back home for bags, consolidating trips, or carrying items by hand when feasible reduces reliance on single-use or short-use bags. Even reducing impulse bag purchases by half makes a measurable difference over time.

TEACH BAG HABITS ACROSS THE HOUSEHOLD

Plastic bag reduction works best when everyone in a household is

on the same page. Teaching kids to grab bags before leaving the house, reminding visiting family members, and setting shared expectations reduces backsliding.

For families, turning reusable bags into part of the routine rather than a special effort helps the habit stick. Over time, it becomes as automatic as grabbing keys or a phone.

FOCUS ON REPETITION, NOT GUILT

Forgetting a bag happens. Buying a plastic bag occasionally does not undo progress. What matters is returning to the habit next time.

The most effective plastic bag reductions come from boring consistency rather than dramatic gestures. The same bags, used again and again, quietly reduce waste without requiring constant attention.

WHY THIS MATTERS LOCALLY

Plastic bags that escape trash bins often travel downhill into storm drains and waterways. Reducing bag use helps keep neighborhood streets cleaner and protects Puget Sound from additional plastic pollution.

While individual actions alone cannot solve the plastic problem, plastic bags remain one area where daily habits directly affect local environments. Fewer bags used means fewer bags discarded, lost, or blown into public spaces. Reducing the eco footprint of plastic bags does not require doing everything right. It starts with doing a few things repeatedly and close to home. In neighborhoods built for walking, community, and daily errands, small bag choices add up faster than many people realize.

Sometimes the most effective environmental change is also the simplest: remembering the bag you already own and using it one more time.
