No-Hitter and Big Bats Power Eatonville to 3-Game Streak

The Eatonville Cruiser baseball team has found their rhythm early in the season, turning a rain delayed start to the season into a three-game winning streak with a series of dominant and timely performances.

Eatonville opened with a 10-0 victory over Foss in its home opener, followed with a 17-0 rout highlighted by a no-hitter from Ryder Herbrand, and capped the week with an 11-4 win over Lakes on Friday.

“I was proud of the guys for swinging the bats,” Eatonville head coach Doug Fillbach said. “We struggled to get our bats going against North Mason, but against Foss, we attacked the ball like we envisioned our team doing.”

In Monday’s home opener, the Cruisers set the tone early. Landen Davis drew a basesloaded walk in the second inning to bring home the first run, and Eatonville added on in the third by capitalizing on defensive miscues and a hit batter.

“Unfortunately, to begin with, we were hitting the ball right at guys,” Fillbach said. “But if you do that enough, the ball ends up finding a way through, and we started scoring runs.”

Ben Smith made sure the early lead held. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out nine and walking two.

“Ben also had a great game, throwing lots of strikes and letting our defense work behind him,” Fillbach said. “Allowing only two hits and our defense behind him committing no errors.”

Eatonville’s aggressive approach on the base paths stood out, as the Cruisers piled up 11 stolen bases while playing error-free defense behind Smith.

Ryder Herbrand connects on a pitch during Eatonville’s matchup against Foss on Monday. The left-hander later delivered a standout performance against the Falcons, tossing a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts while allowing four walks.

If the opener set the tone, Wednesday’s game put the Cruisers on full display. Eatonville erupted for 12 runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 17-0 win. Santiago Ruvalcaba and

Coleson Simpson each delivered key extra-base hits in the inning, while Colton Herbrand capped the rally with a two-run double as the Cruisers built a commanding lead.

Eatonville Special Olympics Athletes Earn Medals at State, Regionals

The Eatonville Special Olympics program celebrated a weekend of impressive accomplishments as athletes from Eatonville Elementary School and Eatonville High School competed in regional and state events.

Sophia Roberts and Wyatt Duncan of Eatonville Elementary School represented their school at the Washington State Special Olympics Winter Games in Wenatchee from February 27 through March 1. Roberts earned a silver medal in Individual Basketball Skills while Duncan captured a bronze medal, marking outstanding performances for both young athletes.

At the high school level, the Eatonville High School Special Olympics Basketball Team competed at the regional level. The team, which includes Ayden Hildebrand, Christian Stacy, and Kaydin Pine, earned a silver medal for their efforts. While the team did not advance to the state competition, their dedication and teamwork drew praise from coaches and community members.

The offense continued to add on, but the story belonged to Ryder Herbrand on the mound.

t was a high-octane week for Eatonville athletics as programs across campus secured significant victories and gained valuable league experience. The track and field teams set a powerful tone by opening 2A SPSL competition with a dominant performance at Clover Park High School, where both the boys and girls squads claimed first place overall against Clover Park and Foss. On the boys’ side, Rogue Pound led the charge with victories in the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump, while Landon Austin captured first in the 300-meter hurdles.

Savvy Senior: Where to Get Help with Medicare Decisions

Dear Savvy Senior,

I’ll be 65 in a few months and could sure use some help sorting through all the confusing Medicare options that are available to me. Where can I get help with my Medicare decisions?

—Baffled Bob

Dear Bob,

With around 11,400 Baby Boomers turning 65 every day in 2026, you’re asking a very timely question.

Many people approaching Medicare are confused by all the choices available today. In addition to original Medicare (Part A and B) that has been around for more than 60 years, you also have the option of enrolling in a Part D prescription drug plan, and a supplemental (Medigap) policy – both of which are sold by private insurance companies.

Another option is a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans, also offered by private insurers, bundle hospital coverage, medical care, prescription drugs, and often extra benefits like vision, dental, and hearing into one policy. Most operate as HMOs or PPOs and require you to receive care within a defined network of providers in your area.

Medicare Advantage plans have also faced increased scrutiny in recent years over prior-authorization requirements that can delay or deny certain services.

To help you determine which path makes the most sense for your situation, there are several reliable resources available, depending on how much assistance you need.

TOOLS AND RESOURCES

A good starting point is the “Medicare & You” handbook, which provides a clear overview of the program and your options. You can download a copy at medicare.gov/medicare-and-you, and you should receive a printed version in the mail about a month before your 65th birthday.

The Medicare website also features a helpful “Find a Medicare Plan” tool at medicare.gov/plan-compare that allows you to compare health plans, prescription drug coverage, and supplemental policies available in your area. If you prefer to speak with someone directly, call Medicare at 800-633-4227, and a representative can walk you through your options over the phone.

Another excellent free resource is your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which provides

unbiased Medicare counseling either in person or by phone. To locate your local SHIP office, visit shiphelp.org or call 877-839-2675.

You can also contact the Medicare Rights Center (medicarerights.org) at 800-333-4114 for help with specific questions.

In addition, HealthMetrix Research publishes a free Cost Share Report at medicarenewswatch.com that compares Medicare Advantage plans by area based on cost-sharing and health status.

GET HELP

If you’d like more hands-on help, you can work with a Medicare insurance agent.

Keep in mind that agents are paid commissions by insurance companies, so

“Medicare Advantage plans have also faced increased scrutiny in recent years over prior-authorization requirements that can delay or deny certain services.”

it’s important to choose an independent agent who represents multiple insurers – not just one. That gives you access to a broader range of options.

Also understand that commissions are typically higher for Medicare Advantage plans than for Medigap and Part D policies used with Original Medicare. As a result, some agents may have a financial incentive to recommend Advantage coverage. That doesn’t mean the advice is wrong, but it’s wise to ask questions and understand all your choices before enrolling.

You can search for licensed agents through nabip.org, the website of the National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals.

Taking the time now to compare your options carefully can help you avoid costly mistakes and give you confidence in the coverage you choose.

Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

Notes from the Eatonville Town Council Meeting – March 23rd

The Eatonville Town Council finalized a series of zoning and land-use changes, awarded a major road project contract, and approved an amendment to a state cleanup grant during its March 23 meeting.

COUNCIL ADOPTS ZONING AND LAND-USE UPDATES

Councilmembers approved a coordinated set of ordinances affecting multiple parcels along the Eatonville Highway corridor, completing a process that began earlier this month with first readings and public review.

The package included Ordinance 2026-3, which rezones a parcel at 349 Madison Ave. S from Mixed Use to General Commercial.

A related measure, Ordinance 2026-4, updates the town’s comprehensive plan to reflect that change, amending the future land-use map from Mixed Use to General Commercial for the same property.

The council also approved Ordinance 2026-5, which rezones two nearby parcels from Mixed Use to Single-Family Low Density.

Additional changes were made through Ordinance 2026-6, which removes the Public Use Open Space overlay from portions of the zoning map.

Finally, Ordinance 2026-7 updates the comprehensive plan by changing the future land-use designation for one of the parcels from Mixed Use to Public Use.

Town officials said the changes are intended to bring zoning designations, the comprehensive plan and municipal code into closer alignment following Planning Commission review and a public hearing held in February.

Additional detailes on the zoning changes area available in the March 11 issue of The Dispatch or visit the Town of Eatonville website for full documents.

HOUSING CODE UPDATES ADOPTED

The council also approved Ordinance 2026-8, which updates the Eatonville Municipal Code to reflect state requirements related to housing types.

The ordinance adds definitions for emergency housing, emergency shelters, transitional housing and permanent supportive housing. State law requires cities to allow these types of housing in certain zones where residential or similar uses are already permitted.

HIGHWAY OVERLAY CONTRACT AWARDED

Councilmembers approved Resolution 2026-J, awarding the Eatonville Highway West overlay project to ICON Materials.

The project will cover a section of Eatonville Highway West from Emerald Ridge Drive to Center Street West. According to the resolution, the town received a Transportation Improvement Board grant of $377,292 to support the work.

ICON Materials submitted the lowest responsible bid at $305,500, which was verified by the town’s engineering consultant, KPG Psomas.

The mayor is authorized to execute the contract on behalf of the town.

CLEANUP GRANT AMENDMENT APPROVED

The council also approved Resolution 2026-K, authorizing an amendment to a grant agreement with the Washington State Department of Ecology tied to cleanup of the town’s former landfill site.

The amendment increases the total grant funding to $7,373,503.16, up from approximately $6.72 million, and adjusts how funds are allocated among project tasks.

The funding supports ongoing environmental investigation, planning and cleanup efforts related to the former municipal landfill, which operated between 1950 and 1980.

The amendment also updates project descriptions, deliverables and budget allocations as the cleanup work continues.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

I am writing to encourage members of our community to consider volunteering at the Eatonville Family Agency. This organization plays a vital role in supporting families in need by providing essential resources, guidance, and a sense of stability during difficult times.

Many families in our area face challenges that are not always visible, and the Eatonville Family Agency works tirelessly to ensure that no one has to navigate those hardships alone. However, they rely heavily on the support of volunteers to continue their important work.

Volunteering is a powerful way to make a direct impact. Whether it’s helping organize donations, assisting with events, or simply offering your time and kindness, every contribution matters. Even a few hours can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

I urge readers to consider getting involved. By volunteering, you are not only helping families in need but also strengthening the sense of community that makes Eatonville such a special place.

Sincerely, Hayden Putnam 9th Grader, Eatonville High School

Eatonville Family Agency Offers Support, Connection and Ways to Give Back

For more than 40 years, Eatonville Family Agency, or EFA, has served local individuals, families and seniors with programs aimed at reducing the impact of poverty and connecting neighbors with practical support. Its mission centers on helping the community through food assistance, clothing, youth and senior activities, holiday support, and referrals to additional resources.

Among its ongoing offerings are free groceries for the community, available every Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This service is open to everyone and does not require families to be food bank clients.

EFA also provides regular opportunities for young people to connect. Pizza Wednesday Club meets once a month and gives students a place to gather, build relationships and take part in a positive community setting. On the first Saturday of each month, EFA also hosts Youth Game Night for middle and high school students from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The April 4 event will also include an Easter egg hunt. Community Dinner is typically held on the last Friday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., offering another way for neighbors to come together in a welcoming setting.

May is Hunger Awareness Month in Eatonville, and EFA’s Facebook page is the place to watch for details about its annual Aid the Agency campaign. Community members can also register now for the Stomp Out Hunger Charity 5K Walk/Run on May 9 at Smallwood Park, a fundraiser benefiting EFA. On May 16, EFA will also host its Spring Cleanup Dumpster event at Smallwood Park from 8 a.m. to noon, or until the dumpsters are full.

In addition to these programs and events, Eatonville Family Agency continues to provide broader support for families throughout the community. For neighbors looking for help, a place to connect, or a way to get involved, EFA remains an important part of Eatonville.

For updates on these programs and upcoming events, follow Eatonville Family Agency on Facebook.

NO-HITTER, FROM 1

The left-hander tossed five hitless innings, striking out seven and working around four walks to secure the no-hitter.

Backed by another error-free defensive effort, Eatonville completed its second straight shutout in dominant fashion.

“Ryder pitched a great game and I was thrilled to see him go out and earn that no-hitter,” Fillbach said. “I think the best part was we set a goal to have less than five free bases and I really pushed him to meet that goal. He went out there determined not to give up free bases and the few times Foss got their bat on the ball, our defense backed Ryder up with no errors.”

The momentum carried into Friday’s matchup against Lakes, where the Cruisers showed they could win in a different way.

After falling behind early and battling through multiple ties, Eatonville broke the game open late for an 11-4 victory.

Lakes scored in the first inning, but Eatonville

answered when Ruvalcaba grounded out to tie the game. The Cruisers briefly fell behind again before rallying in the third inning.

Colton Herbrand delivered a two-run double to give Eatonville the lead, and Colston Bruun followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Lakes battled back to tie the game at 4 in the fourth, but Eatonville responded immediately. Colton Herbrand came through again with a two-run single to break the tie, and an error extended the lead to 7-4.

Colton Herbrand was not finished.

He drove in four runs on the day, adding a basesloaded walk in the fifth inning to help put the game out of reach. He finished with a double, a single, and a key walk, leading a lineup that showed patience with eight total walks.

On the mound, Colton Herbrand also picked up the win, striking out seven over three innings. LJ Osborn provided a steady relief appearance with a scoreless inning, helping secure the victory.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS, FROM 1

Special recognition went to EHS teen volunteers Cody Jumper and Emory Simpson, whose support during the basketball season helped ensure that the athletes had a positive and successful experience.

SPORTS SHORTS, FROM 1

The field events saw Ian Mitchell lead a sweep of the shot put alongside Mason Kinley and Dale Swaner, while Adam Ames took the discus title ahead of the same duo. Distance runner Titus Lowe added second-place finishes in both the 1600 and 3200 meters, as Oscar Lopez-Diaz and Gabriel Kolsrud secured second-place spots in the 400 and 800 meters, respectively. The girls’ track team was powered by Hannah Bieker, who swept the 1600 and 3200 meters, with Bridget Stumph finishing second in both events. Lily Lightfoot stood out with wins in the 100 hurdles and triple jump, and Mckenzie Ball

claimed the long jump title. Madison McChesney-Brown highlighted the throws with a win in the javelin and a second-place finish in the discus, helping the Cruisers cap the meet with wins in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

The Lady Cruiser softball team also displayed impressive firepower, splitting two games while totaling 30 hits over the week. On Thursday, the team nearly completed a massive comeback in a 9-8 loss to Orting. After falling behind by four runs in the fourth inning, Eatonville rallied behind three-hit performances from Lilah Chapman and Kailyn Kenney and two RBIs each from Josie Lavergne,

aggressive on the base paths, swiping 10 bases in the game. C. Herbrand, Smith, and Coleson Simpson each recorded multiple steals as the Cruisers continued to apply pressure.

“Our bats have really warmed up the last three games,” Fillbach said. “After North Mason, we had a talk about how we have to be aggressive and swing the bat and the boys took that to heart. We have been tearing it up at the plate and I’m excited to see how the work they’ve put in has paid off. That mindset shift was huge and I hope we continue it throughout the season.”

Through three games, Eatonville has showcased a balanced formula. Dominant pitching, timely hitting, aggressive base running, and clean defense have fueled a strong start and a three-game win streak.

The Cruisers will look to keep that momentum going when they travel to Clover Park on Tuesday and will follow that game by hosting Clover Park on Wednesday to finish out the week.

friendships, and a sense of accomplishment. For many of the athletes, the competitions represent more than medals; they are moments of pride, personal growth, and community support.

With the basketball season wrapped up, the Eatonville Special Olympics program looks ahead to future competitions and continued participation from both elementary and high school athletes.

Amy Tozier, and Brooklynn Sullivan. Lavergne also struck out seven in a complete-game effort in the circle. The team rebounded on Friday with a crushing 16-1 victory over Clover Park fueled by an eight-run explosion in the first inning. Morgan Laird dominated the game by striking out 10 over five innings while hitting an insidethe-park home run as part of a threeRBI performance. Tozier also drove in three runs, as the team remained error-free and recorded seven stolen bases. Looking ahead, the softball team faces a three-game slate next week with trips to Tenino on Tuesday and Washington on Wednesday, before returning home Friday to host Foss. All three games are scheduled for 4 pm starts. Meanwhile, the girls’ tennis team navigated a revamped lineup during a busy three-match week, finishing with a 1-2 record while gaining experience against larger school competition. The Cruisers suffered narrow 3-2 losses on Monday and Thursday , though Charlotte Stumph earned a straight-set singles win on Monday and the No. 1 doubles team of Jessie Zumwalt and Rilynne Johnson remained undefeated throughout the week. A Thursday highlight included a grueling three-set victory by Claire Bertram and Emma Abston that lasted more than two hours. Eatonville finished the week on a high note with a 3-2 victory on Friday. In that final match, all three doubles teams secured wins, including another comeback from Zumwalt and Johnson , a straight-set victory from Isabel Volk and Abston at No. 2 doubles , and a match-sealing performance by Bertram and Toryn Amaral at the No. 3 spot.

Eatonville Names May Day Royalty for 110th Community Day

Congratulations to Eatonville High School

seniors Trinity Wood and Santiago Ruvalcaba, who have been elected the 98th May Day Queen and King for Eatonville’s 110th Community Day.

Wood has grown up in Eatonville and attended Eatonville Elementary School and Eatonville Middle School before coming to Eatonville High School. She served as one of the 2025-26 EHS cheer captains and as senior class treasurer. She has also helped lead several cheer camps for the community’s mini cheerleaders.

Ruvalcaba has been a student in the Eatonville School District for the past seven years. He serves as senior class president and is the catcher for the high school baseball team. He has also helped coach middle school baseball and has assisted with fundraising efforts for the Class of 2026.

For more than a century, Eatonville has gathered each spring to celebrate Community Day, originally known as May Day. The tradition

reflects the town’s pride, history and strong sense of community.

The celebration began in 1913, when local students and community members noticed that roads, buildings and yards around town needed care. Neighbors came together to improve Eatonville, and their shared effort sparked a celebration that became one of the town’s most treasured traditions.

Over time, the event grew into a full day of festivities, with games, music and activities for all ages. It has become an annual celebration of community spirit and unity.

Faye Williams was named the first May Day Queen in 1926, with Bill Smith serving as May Day King. In 1936, under the leadership of Bertha Mahaffie, the Royal Court tradition expanded to include the coronation ceremony, which remains one of the event’s highlights today.

This year marks Eatonville’s 110th Community Day and the 98th year of crowning a May Day Queen and King, continuing a tradition that connects generations.

Trinity Wood and Santiago Ruvalcaba, elected the 98th May Day Queen and King for Eatonville’s 110th Community Day.
