“The tour was excellent. Our guide, David was really great. He was so knowledgeable and always went that extra mile with his commentary so we were aware of the history and the beauty of all we experienced. He was friendly with everyone and made the trip enjoyable for us. The coach driver was also excellent.”

“I enjoyed the experience with like minded people. I felt very relaxed because of the majority were solo travellers. Loved all the ferry trips and it was very well organised. Alastair Walker was outstanding – he made the Hebrides come alive!”

“My trip to Iceland exceeded all expectations. Every aspect - sites, accommodation, food, and especially our trip leader Alastair Walker - were outstanding. This was my first Brightwater Holidays tour and I certainly hope to return. Thank you, Brightwater.”

Grand Tour of the Inner Hebrides

Walking in the Outer Hebrides

Complementing our Grand Tour of the Outer Hebrides, this equally grand yet relaxing tour takes in the principal Inner Hebridean isles of Mull, Islay and Jura as well as the famous little island gems of Staffa and Iona. We begin on the Isle of Mull with a visit to the colourful ‘capital’ Tobermory, followed by an exciting boat trip to the tiny island of Staffa and its famous Fingal’s Cave, an amazing natural cathedral of basalt columns. A full day is given over to the peaceful island of Iona, with its famous abbey and beautiful beaches. We then continue to Islay and visit historic Loch Finlaggan, the Bowmore Distillery and the Museum of Islay Life, along with a visit to Jura.

A highly scenic drive through the Highlands and a pleasant sail from Skye takes us to our hotel in Tarbert, Harris. Over the following three days, we set out on a series of walks that feature some of the finest vistas and most fascinating ancient monuments that the Western Isles have to offer. There is a circular walk round the island of Scalpay and its picturesque lighthouse, followed by a stroll along the much-photographed but usually deserted Luskentyre Beach; rambles among the ruins of Carloway Broch and the mesmerising Standing Stones of Callanish, and a challenging but highly rewarding walk from Tarbert with stunning coastal views.

Standing Stones of Callanish

Duart Castle

Ancient Stones of the Outer Hebrides

Mull, Staffa & Iona

In about 1800 BC, at around the time that the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt was flourishing, an equally vigorous civilisation was leaving its mark on the far flung islands of the Outer Hebrides. Later settlers have left their mark too, and the tranquil islands of Lewis and Harris are blessed with an abundance of archaeological remains. Neolithic cairns, Bronze Age standing stones, Iron Age houses, Norse mills and Blackhouses from a couple of centuries ago – these islands are a living timeline and a paradise for the amateur archaeologist. In the company of a local specialist guide we will tour a succession of sites, from Lewis in the north to Harris in the south.

From our base at the Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa, conveniently located close to the ferry terminal with superb views of the Sound of Mull, the Morvern hills and the Firth of Lorne, we explore some of the highlights of the island. The multi-coloured buildings that line the waterfront of the island’s principal town, Tobermory, will be familiar to many. From here, we sail on a wildlife cruise that takes us to the Treshnish Isles, home to thousands of seabirds including puffins, and on to the little island of Staffa, whose natural cathedral of basalt columns – Fingal’s Cave – is one of the wonders of the west coast. We also visit the 13th century Duart Castle and the isle of Iona.

Islay and Jura

Highland Explorer: Skye and the Far North

While visiting Islay, we visit the Bowmore Distillery – the oldest on the island – and we stop at Loch Gruinart RSPB Nature Reserve, where hopefully we have the opportunity to see many bird species. To the north-east is Islay’s neighbour Jura, an untamed and rather mysterious island with just 200 human inhabitants, dominated by the “Paps of Jura”. The northern end of the island was home to George Orwell, where he wrote his masterpiece, 1984. Here, we enjoy a scenic tour before some free time in Craighouse. Completing our trio of islands, there’s also an optional excursion to the tranquil little island of Colonsay, where the gardens of Colonsay House await.

A classic coach tour of Scotland, with nothing more demanding than sitting back and enjoying one scenic delight after another, as we travel north into the Cairngorms, north west to Gairloch and further north still to the wilds of Assynt and the beach at Achmelvich. Enjoy a full day on the Isle of Skye, passing the Cuillin Mountains, more often than not wreathed in ethereal mist, to Portree, the epitome of a colourful Hebridean harbour. From our second hotel in Fort William, which sits at the foot of Ben Nevis, we head west to Mallaig, stopping for a photo at the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Our homeward journey takes us via Glen Coe and tranquil Loch Earn.

Knitting in Shetland

In the Footsteps of the Picts

During this unique special interest holiday, there are workshops aplenty, both starting off our mornings and rounding off our afternoons. These present the perfect opportunity to hone our skills — and perhaps even learn some new ones — under the watchful eye of experienced local tutors. Knitting knowledge isn’t the only thing available for us to take home as we will also enjoy a visit to the elegant Nielanell Design Studio, which offers the perfect opportunity to pick up a stylish souvenir, along with visits to the prehistoric and Norse settlement of Jarlshof, Sumburgh Head sea cliffs and the Textile Gallery of the Shetland Museum and Archives.

Living beyond the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, the people of northern Scotland in the Dark Ages were known as the Picts – a name given by the Romans, meaning the ‘painted - tattooed ones’. Renowned as one of the most warlike of the Celtic barbarian tribes of Europe, they successfully attacked the Roman army and yet few of their homes or forts have ever been found. Travel through the heartland of the southern Picts in Perthshire and Angus, coming face-to-face with them through the clues of their everyday life. Stand before magnificent Pictish stones at Aberlemno, take a boat to the Isle of May and visit Forteviot - palace of the Pictish kings.

Each one has a fascinating story to tell with countless legends and several royal connections. Our tour starts at Drum Castle, where 700 years of history is woven into its battlements. Autumn Tints of Arran

Autumn Tints of Perthshire

At no time of year are we more assured of Arran’s beauty than in the autumn months, when its wild woods and open spaces are aflame with a riot of red and gold foliage. Often described as “Scotland in Miniature”, this island has a blend of Highland and Island scenery with granite peaks and deep glens to the north that contrast with its rolling and lush farmlands to the south. Visits on this short but sweet seasonal escape include the beautiful Brodick Castle and its surrounding gardens as well as sites located around the island of Arran, such as Catacol with its dozen fishermen’s cottages known as the ‘12 Apostles’, and the villages of Lamlash and Whiting Bay.

Portuguese Archaeology

Malta’s Archaeological Heritage

With the roar of the Atlantic Ocean and the tranquillity of the Iberian hillsides as our constant companions, we travel through time stopping off at megalithic standing stones, Iron Age settlements, Roman ruins and medieval plazas. We enjoy a host of UNESCOlisted sites including the city of Evora, where its monuments and defensive walls stretch back over 20 centuries; Sintra, a magical town in which exotically coloured palaces rise from the dewy forests; and Guimarães, an immaculately preserved medieval town that was the birthplace of Portugal’s first king. Other highlights include visits to Lisbon, the Almendres Stone Circle and the Castelo de Pena.

Malta’s diminutive archipelago is by no means an indication of the vast riches it holds, from the Neolithic to the present day - they are many and varied. During this tour, we venture inside the walled citadel of Mdina, we explore the warren of narrow tomb-lined passages of St. Paul’s Catacombs, and we take to the waves for a boat trip around the spectacular cliffs and caverns of the Blue Grotto. But most startling of all, perhaps, are the mysterious sites left by civilisations with whom we are just starting to get acquainted: the millennia-old Mnajdra Temples and the megaliths of Ħaġar Qim, which make for a truly unforgettable archaeological expedition.

Archaeology of the Peloponnese

Crete Archaeology

A place of timeless beauty, the Peloponnese is home to 3,000-yearold relics at Mycenae, classical ruins at Epidaurus and Byzantine churches at Monemvasia – the whole region is rich with history. Archaeological highlights to look forward to include the Lion’s Gate at Mycenae, the most ancient piece of monumental sculpture in Europe; the 4th century BC Temple of Apollo Maleatis and the Theatre with its awe-inspiring acoustics at Epidavros. We also visit the church of Agia Sophia in the Fort City of Monemvassia, the amazingly well-preserved site at Messene and the eerie, dead city of Mystras, which casts its silent gaze over the plain around Sparta.

With a rich tapestry of archaeological treasures, sleepy villages and lively towns, all set in a Homeric landscape of mountains, gorges and flower-strewn pastures, the Greek island of Crete is an unforgettable destination. Crete was home to one of the earliest European civilizations, the Minoans, who roamed these hills some 4,000 years ago and their legacy can be seen all over the island, in particular at the legendary Palace of Knossos. In addition to exploring this iconic site, we visit the old town of Rethymnon, the haunting island of Spinalonga that was a leper colony in use right up until the 1960s, the Greek-Roman town of Gortyn and also Phaistos.

ying at the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, the island of Grenada offers a typical slice of Caribbean life, flavoured with spice and full of colour. Given that Grenada won its 15th gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2019, it’s reasonable to assume that people here know a thing or two about gardening, and we can expect some real treats as we visit a host of gardens.

We are based at the Blue Horizons Garden Resort, set back 300 yards from Grand Anse Beach, which provides accommodation in self-contained one-bedroom units offering both comfort and privacy. The grounds are extensive and merit a guided tour in their own right, as well as a bird-watching tour. Other highlights on this wonderful Caribbean adventure, led by the ever-popular Trevor Edwards, include a visit to the River Antoine Rum Distillery, the Balthazar Estate with its giant heliconias and other tropical plants, and the beautiful Sunny Side Garden, which is home to koi ponds, an orchard and an excellent variety of palms, orchids, hibiscus, and bromeliads, many of which feature in Grenada’s award-winning RHS Chelsea displays.

Day 2 We begin our holiday with an introduction to our hotel’s gardens and grounds, and can look out for some of the 27 species of birds that frequent the gardens here - binoculars provided! (B) Day 3 Today gets off to a fabulous start with an exploration of the island, with visits to a trio of private gardens. ESSENTIALS COLLECTION Introducing our brand new range of tours - includes no/low single supplements

H

ere at Brightwater, we know that great value for money is very important to you when choosing your next holiday. As always, we’ve been listening to your feedback about the rising cost of travel and decided to create a brand new range of UKbased itineraries that we are calling our ‘Essentials’ collection. Our 10 brand new itineraries can take you from the coastlines of Cornwall to the stunning Norfolk Broads – for less. How? Well, our Essentials holidays are more stripped back in terms of what they include and offer more freedom than our classic range. They also don’t include the services of a Tour Manager, but your driver will of course be on hand to ensure your smooth transfer and to point out areas of interest as we go. Each holiday includes one day at leisure or the choice to join an optional excursion for an additional fee, which gives you the chance to control the pace of your break. Want to explore the local area in your own time? Fine by us! Fancy hopping on our coach to discover a garden or the historic sites to be found in a nearby city? That’s fine, too! These holidays also include all breakfasts and dinners throughout, but lunches will be up to you.
