Keeping you safe
A new world of travel in the time of COVID-19
The past six months have been difficult for us all, and also disappointing for those of us with travel plans that have been disrupted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our guests have a passion for travel and a desire to appreciate the historic treasures of the world, and we understand that you are reluctant to postpone holiday plans indefinitely. Naturally, many of us are concerned about travelling in the time of COVID-19 and we share these concerns. Whilst the risk of contracting COVID-19 on your adventures cannot be entirely eliminated, here at Andante Travels we have created an industry-leading series of 11 actions designed to minimise your exposure and to help get you back out into the world with confidence.
TRAVEL INSURANCE WITH COVID-19 COVER, STARTING FROM JUST £64pp
If you’re concerned about taking a trip following the life-altering events of 2020, we are delighted to reveal that we recently partnered with a provider to ensure that we can now offer you fully comprehensive travel insurance that also includes cover for COVID-19. What’s more, it starts from just £64pp. Some insurers continue to exclude COVID-19 from their cover, as they did from the beginning of the pandemic and others will cover you only if you fall ill during your travels, not if you show symptoms before you depart and need to cancel. While our policy is not the cheapest on the market, it provides you with a ‘peace of mind’ level of cover in these uncertain times.

Cava de' Tirreni
Day One | London - Cava de’ Tirreni Today we fly from London to Naples and then transfer to our hotel. Day Two | Cava de’ Tirreni - Paestum Our day begins at the site of Paestum, ancient Poseidonia. Long before the Romans came, this was a thriving Greek city that was part of Magna Graecia from the 6th century BC. During our time in this atmospheric and enchanting area, we will wander among its mighty temples. It is interesting to note that some of them are among the most well-preserved anywhere in the Greek world. Following a leisurely lunch, we visit the Paestum Museum, which houses the famous ‘Tomb of the Diver’, with its intact frescoes dated to around 480 BC. Here, we will have a private behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s incredible store rooms. Day Three | Pompeii We devote the entire day to Pompeii. No other site compares in revealing the proportions of a Roman town. We visit some of the most well-preserved buildings as well as an amphitheatre, theatre, forum, bath-houses, bars, and even brothels. Fountains in the street are worn from where countless people rested their hands to take a drink and Roman graffiti still marks the walls. Travelling via the best routes to avoid crowds, we visit some villas that are newly reopened to the public. Day Four | Naples - Pozzuoli Our fist visit of the day is to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, home to exceptional collections of artefacts. After lunch, we move on to Pozzuoli and visit one of the world’s most impressive amphitheatres. Later, we are granted private access to the Cave of Sejanus, an impressive tunnel dating to the age of Augustus, which gives access to the lovely seaside villa of Pausilypon. Here, we visit a theatre and odeon, built at a later date. Day Five | Stabiae Go off the beaten track to the villas of Stabiae, an exclusive Roman resort for the very wealthy. The vast Villa San Marco, with its swimming pool and bath complex, is one of the most opulent along this coast and it remains very impressive in its scale. The Villa Arianna, with its wonderful frescoes, is remarkably little-visited and provides fabulous views over the Bay of Naples. During our visit here, we will walk through its grand rooms, chambers and gardens – all in splendid isolation. Later in the afternoon, there will be some free time to explore at leisure. Day Six | Vesuvius - Oplontis Today, we ascend the great crater of Vesuvius. Most of our journey will be by bus, but the final part requires a short walk and it is well worth the effort. Peering into the crater, we will see fumaroles and the layers of previous eruptions, and walking around the perimeter affords magnificent views over the Bay of Naples. After lunch, we continue on to the impressive villa at Oplontis, which boasts sumptuous frescoes, a bath complex, a swimming pool, and interesting slave quarters. Day Seven | Herculaneum The town of Herculaneum, which perfectly complements a visit to Pompeii, is our last port of call. We start the day with a private visit to the theatre of
Herculaneum, still buried under the pyroclastic flow. We continue with visits to two on-site museums, including the Antiquarium, which houses previous articles found along Herculaneum’s sea front. Finally, ample time is devoted to wandering the streets, where we will find almost complete houses rising up on either side. Day Eight | Naples - London After breakfast, our tour ends and we catch our return flight home to London.

The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily is arguably the region in Italy with the richest history. This classically beautiful heart of the Mediterranean was praised by poets and later became the prize of countless cultures - Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, and then later the Normans. During the Greek and Norman periods, Sicily was the creative centre of philosophy, art and learning. On this sun-soaked island, we find wonderfully preserved Greek temples, Roman villas and Norman cathedrals – many of which are filled with the most stunning mosaics. This memorable trip showcases the wonderful monuments from all the cultures that found their homes on the island of Sicily. We explore the Normano-Arabic churches of Palermo, some of the best-preserved Greek temples in the entire world and we even explore the most important late antique villa in the country. What’s more, this all-encompassing tour also features a private evening visit to the incredible Cappella Palatina – an extravagant chapel whose interior glitters with gold leaf and mosaic.

CRETE & SANTORINI Rise and fall of the Minoan civilisation 8 Days
From £2,495pp
Departing April - October 2021
The Minoans are perhaps best known for their incredible labyrinthine palaces – the greatest of which is located at Knossos and was supposedly where Theseus defeated the Minotaur. Our journey across the two beautiful islands of Crete and Santorini will demonstrate the impressive architectural and artistic skills of this Bronze Age civilisation. This sun-soaked tour begins on the stunning island of Santorini, buried suddenly during the cataclysmic eruption of Thera, which signalled the beginning of the end of Minoan civilisation. Across the water in Crete, we continue to trace the story of the Minoans, whose writing, organisation and ambition had a profound influence on the development of ancient Greece - and, thus, the western world. Many memorable moments await travellers on this tour, from a chance to wander around the evocative island of Spinalonga – a former leper colony that was shockingly in use right up until 1957 – to a lengthy visit at the mighty Palace of Knossos, a must-see site that is on the bucket list of many archaeology enthusiasts.

JORDAN - PETRA & THE DESERT FORTRESSES Spend two full days in the evocative rock-cut city of Petra 10 Days From £3,595pp
Departing March & October 2021
Activity Level
Nothing can prepare a visitor for the experience of Petra. The scale, the colours and the grandeur are simply overwhelming. Lively, cosmopolitan and rich, with goods from every corner of the known world, ancient Petra was a truly extraordinary city. Its streets were swathed in a fusion of Nabataean and Classical architecture — elaborate tombs, colonnaded streets and temples carved into rose-red rock. What’s more, there will also be two full days in Petra, which is more than what’s offered by many other tour operators. One day there is undeniably great, but two will treat you to a more immersive encounter – exploring everything from iconic sites like the Treasury to picturesque climbs (optional, but well worth the time) that reach the Nabatean ‘Monastery’ and ‘High Place’. Petra’s tombs and temples, however, are only a fraction of Jordan’s story. On this tour, we will explore traces of biblical tribes, Roman legions, Christian crusaders and Islamic caliphates in this promised land of archaeology and fascinating history. Elsewhere, there will be a chance to experience weightlessness in the Dead Sea, we will discover Jerash with its 2nd century Hadrian’s Arch and we will spend time at the mighty crusader castle of Kerak, one of the largest in the Levantine region.

Machu Picchu, Cuzco, the Colonial jewel that is Arequipa and the enigmatic Nazca Lines — this is a classic tour of some of Peru’s major archaeological and cultural attractions alike. Explore the world-famous sites of the Inca alongside the intriguing remains of their lesser-known predecessors and immediate descendants as we climb from the Pacific into the highlands, to the ancient heartland of the Inca Empire. From intriguing lines in the arid coastal deserts to royal estates on the Urubamba river on our descent to the ‘lost city’ of Machu Picchu, and from colonial cities to breathtaking golden artefacts left by the earliest Andean civilisations, this is an epic adventure. Exploring Peru in the company of a renowned expert means that we will take you to places in the right way: Machu Picchu at daybreak and again after the crowds disperse, the extensive Nazca ceremonial centre of Cahuachi with its 40 mounds that originally formed the bases to mud brick structures, and Moray with its extraordinary circular terrace systems that are a sight to behold. Elsewhere, where culture and tradition is concerned, we have arranged a very special visit to a local family to witness a skilful demonstration of weaving. If you’ve always wanted to tick Peru off your bucket list, this really is the way to do it, guided by an expert and with all-encompassing visits.
Guided by David Drew Writer, broadcaster & archaeologist, David studied at Oxford and UCL. He has excavated in Peru for many years.

The monumental passage tomb of Newgrange is but one of the highlights on this tour that takes in Dublin, the Boyne Valley, Carrowmore, mystical Galway, and the island of Inis Mor.
