Day One | Bilbao

Day Two | Atapeurca & Burgos

Our journey begins with a drive south to Atapuerca. After lunch, we head to Burgos to explore the Museo de Human Evolution. Our visit to the Atapuerca archaeological site provides further insights into the area's rich history.

Day Three | Bilbao - Santillana del Mar

We depart for Santander to visit the Museum of Prehistory. Next, we travel to El Pendo, home to a cave featuring an impressive eight-metre-long panel of painted animals. We then proceed to Santillana del Mar, our base for three nights.

Day Four | Tito Bustillo & Altamira

We head west to Ribadesella to visit the Cueva de Tito Bustillo, followed by Altamira, where a precise 3D-scanned facsimile replicates the original cave's contours.

Day Five | Santillana del Mar - San Sebastien

We begin at the Puenta Viesgo Rock Art Centre This includes the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Cueva de las Monedas and Cueva de El Castillo We return to Santillana del Mar for leisure time in the afternoon.

Day Six | Guggenheim & Ekain

We depart Santillana del Mar for Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim Museum. After lunch, we visit the Ekain facsimile before heading to San Sebastián for the night.

Day Seven | San Sebastien - Pau - St. Giron

Our journey from San Sebastián to Pau takes us through the Basque Country to the Pyrenees. Pau, nestled at the Pyrenees' foot, welcomes us with lunch before we explore Grotte de Gargas. Here, Upper Palaeolithic art features animal engravings and 231 handprints created by blowing coloured liquid over hands placed on rock surfaces. After our visit, we continue to St. Giron where we check in to our hotel, our home for the next three nights.

Day Eight | Grotte de la Vache & Grotte de Niaux

We begin with Grotte de la Vache, showcasing engravings and paintings of animals from 15,000 years ago. After lunch, we explore Grotte de Niaux, offering breathtaking views and a powerful collection of Ice Age drawings.

Nine | Grotte du Mas D’Azil & Bédeilhac

Our exploration continues at Grotte du Mas D’Azil, a site integral to Azilian culture, known for bone harpoons and decorated pebbles. We then visit Bédeilhac, exploring the Museum of Prehistory at Tarascon-sur-Ariège and the Grotte de Bédeilhac, before returning to our hotel in Oust.

| St. Giron - Toulouse

After breakfast, we depart our hotel for one last for one last museum visit before heading home. We spend the morning at the Musee de l’aurignacien, located in the village of Aurignac. This museum is dedicated to the Aurignacian culture, which dates back to around 35,000 to 29,000 years ago and is known for its significant contributions to early human art and tool-making.

Day One | Paris - Poitiers

Meet the group in Poitiers, then we drive to the village of Angles-sur-l’Anglin where we will see Roc-aux-Sorciers

Day Two | Poitiers - Les Eyzies

This morning we head to Les Eyzies, making some important stops along the way. Our first is to the excellent Museum of Prehistory at Lussac-les-Chateau, dedicated to the local prehistory. We continue to Roc-de-Sers and La Chaire à Calvin, a rock shelter decorated with monumental parietal sculptures.

Day Three | Cap Blanc & Font de Gaume

We begin at the rock shelter of Cap Blanc, a rare example of Ice Age sculpted bas-reliefs and the best still in situ which are open to the public. After lunch we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Font de Gaume, the Musée de la Préhistoire and finally the Musée de l’Abri de Cro-Magnon

Day Four | Le Thot & Lascaux IV centre and Lascaux II cave

This morning we visit the Lascaux IV centre and then its on to the park of Le Thot. We have an independent lunch in Montignac, before dedicating the afternoon to the Lascaux II cave

Lascaux is the most famous and spectacular of all decorated caves, with hundreds of paintings and 1,500 engravings, best known for its awe-inspiring depictions of aurochs, horses and deer.

Day Five | Grotte de Rouffignac & Abri du Poisson

We travel by electric train into the cave system of Rouffignac. Known as the Cave of the Hundred Mammoths, about one-third of all mammoth depictions known are found in this cave. Our next stop is the the fascinating site of Laugerie Haute before ending our day at the small rock shelter known as Abri du Poisson

Day Six | Cougnac & Pech Merle

Our first visit is to Cougnac, two caves are found here which contain the claw-marks of cave bears and fascinating stalactite and stalagmite formations. We continue to Pech Merle, with painted black outlines of aurochs, mammoth, spotted-horses, geometric shapes and handprints.

Day Seven | Les Eyzies - Paris

Our tour ends and we make our independent onward journeys.

Day One | Dublin

Meet the group at Dublin Airport and transfer to Fourknocks, where we see a fine example of a passage tomb, now preserved under a concrete dome with lighting apertures to show the unusual decoration to good effect. The remains of at least sixty individuals were found here and grave goods included stone and bone pendants and beads, as well as bone pins. From here, we continue to our hotel in Dublin for one night.

Day Two | Dublin - Drogheda

Our journey in Dublin, rich in Viking history, begins at the Old Library of Trinity College, home to the 9th-century Book of Kells. We then visit the 12th-century St Patrick’s Cathedral, a key medieval landmark. After lunch, we explore the National Museum of Ireland, featuring Bronze Age gold, the 4,500-year-old Lurgan longboat, and preserved Iron Age bogland remains. The day concludes as we travel to our hotel in Drogheda.

Day Three | Newgrange & Knowth

Following breakfast, we head to Newgrange, a monumental Neolithic burial mound older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza. A distinctive feature is a stone box in the roof, allowing the winter solstice sun to illuminate the passage and rear chamber, showcasing the Neolithic builders' astronomical and engineering prowess. We then proceed to Knowth, a UNESCO-listed Neolithic site with two passage graves, one featuring a cruciform terminal chamber. Adorned with over three hundred decorated stones, Knowth is a significant repository of megalithic art, displaying spirals and serpentine forms. Later, we visit the Hill of Tara, historically the seat of Ireland’s High Kings, and view the Stone of Destiny, an emblem of ancient monarchy.

Day Four | Drogheda - Sligo

Our day begins at the passage grave cemetery at Loughcrew, or Slieve na Callighe, where we see Ireland's oldest monuments. Cairn T, aligned with equinox sunrises, features the Hag’s Chair, likely used for Catholic Mass during penal times. We continue to Sligo, a coastal town with a history as a bustling trade hub visited by Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. Post-lunch, we explore Creevykeel, an excellent example of an Irish Court Tomb, designed for social events involving large gatherings.

Day Five | Carrowmore & Carrowkeel

Today's highlight is Carrowmore, Ireland's oldest prehistoric cemetery, notable for its monuments clustered around Listoghil, a chamber tomb containing inhumations. These tombs were reused for burials during the Bronze and Iron Ages

After lunch, we visit the Drumanone dolmen and proceed to the Carrowkeel megalithic complex

The scenic one-mile walk to this atmospheric site offers stunning views over Sligo Bay and Knocknarea Hill

Day Six | Sligo – Rathcroghan - Galway

Our journey to Galway, located at the mouth of the River Corrib, includes a stop at Rathcroghan, the former Connachta capital. This unique archaeological landscape, mentioned in early Irish manuscripts, spans from the Neolithic to the early medieval periods with burial mounds and ringforts. In Galway, we visit the Galway City Museum's Prehistoric collection.

Day Seven | Inis Mor

On our final full day, we ferry to Inis Mor, one of the Arran islands, where wild landscapes contrast with thatched cottages and stone walls. Among the archaeological sites, Dun Aengus stands out,

Prehistoric Italy

Day One | Verona - Boario Terme

Meet the group at the airport in Verona or at our hotel in Boario Terme.

Day Two | Val Camonica

We begin our survey of the extraordinary rock art with a two-day exploration of Val Camonica, starting with the incredible sites in Naquane Park The valley is 75kms in length and contains more than 100,000 prehistoric rock art images depicting people, animals, tools and weapons. We continue with a visit to the huge Copper Age engraved boulders at Massi di Cemno. Excavations here uncovered a significant multi-period sanctuary. In the afternoon, we spend time in the National Museum of Prehistory della Val Camonica. Here, we see a marvellous collection of statue stelae and a wide range of finds from decades of excavations in the valley.

Day Three | Val Camonica

This morning, we visit the rock art sites in the archaeological park of Seradina-Bedolini showing scenes of hunting, war, magic an agriculture. After lunch, we contrast art with everyday domestic life as we view reconstructed prehistoric houses – and more rock art – at Foppe di Nadro. Here, we can see a Neolithic hut and also a Rhaetic Iron Age house, giving a good idea of how the people that made the rock art lived.

Day Four | Boario Terme - Lake Ledro - Trento

Today we make our way through the foothills of the Alps to the shores of beautiful Lake Ledro where a Bronze Age pile dwelling village (known as a palafitta) was discovered in 1929. We visit the Pile Dwelling Museum to see the finds from the site and view its reconstructed houses. The remarkable finds excavated from the lake village include baked bread moulded around heated stones. In the afternoon we continue to Riva del Garda and La Rocca Museum, where the exhibits include Copper Age statues.

Day Five | Bolzano & Trento

We drive further into the Alps and visit the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, home of Ötzi, the Ice Man. Scientists and archaeologists have unravelled (and continue to unravel) the tiniest details of his life during the Copper Age, 5,000 years ago. His body has yielded information on how he lived and what he ate, how his tattoos possibly indicate acupuncture points, how he survived and how he died. The original artefacts are very well displayed, along with the excellent reconstructions and are irresistibly fascinating. After lunch we return to Trento to visit the magnificent Romanesque cathedral and the excavations of a Roman street below one of its piazzas, the Bishop’s Palace.

Day Six | Trento - Verona

We transfer from Trento to the airport in Verona to make our independent onward journeys.

Nowhere in the world gives deeper insight into Roman life than the dramatic seaside towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Before the cataclysmic eruption of Vesuvius these were thriving, lively seaside towns.

Pompeii was a trading town equipped with many bars, shops and brothels, while neighbouring Herculaneum was an affluent and elegant town. All this came to an abrupt halt, however, one autumnal day in AD 79, when Vesuvius - which had done little more than rumble for years - erupted with incredible force.

Two thousand years later, the sites of the Bay of Naples confront the modern visitor with a vivid, haunting immediacy like nothing else in the ancient world. In some cases we even know the names, professions and personal histories of the people who owned the villas and shops we visit. The preservation of Herculaneum, Pompeii and its surrounding sites is remarkable and the archaeology beyond compare, which is why we have been leading tours here for over 30 years. And this is an exciting time for visitors as new discoveries are being made and new houses opened. Walk with us as the Romans did, from amphitheatre to baths to forum, as our Guide Lecturer conjures an evocative picture of the everyday life of these prosperous Roman towns.

Day One | Naples - Cava de’ Tirreni

Meet the group at Naples Airport or at our hotel in Cava de’ Tirreni.

Day Two |

Cava de’ Tirreni - Paestum

Our day begins with a visit to the fascinating site at Paestum, ancient Poseidonia. Long before the Romans came, this was a thriving Greek city that was part of greater Greece from the 6th century BCE. After lunch, we visit the Paestum Museum, famed for its archaic metopes and its painted tombs. We also be able to visit the magnificent Store Rooms of Paestum.

Day Three | Pompeii

We devote the entire day to Pompeii. No other site compares in revealing details of daily life in a Roman town. We visit some of the most well-preserved buildings as well as an amphitheatre, theatre, forum, bath-houses, bars and even brothels. Fountains in the street are worn from where countless people rested their hands to take a drink and Roman graffiti can still be seen on the walls. Travelling via

the best routes to avoid the crowds, we visit some houses that are newly reopened to the public.

Day Four | Naples - Pozzuoli

Our first visit of the day is to the fabulous National Archaeological Museum in Naples, home to exceptional collections of artefacts. After lunch, we move on to Pozzuoli and visit one of the world’s most impressive amphitheatres. Later, we are granted private access to the Cave of Sejanus an impressive tunnel dating to the age of Augustus, which gives access to the lovely seaside villa of Pausilypon. During our visit here, we can see a theatre and odeon, built at a later date.

Day Five | Stabiae

Go off the beaten track today to the villas of Stabiae, an exclusive Roman resort for the very wealthy. The vast Villa San Marco, with its swimming pool and bath complex, is one of the most opulent along this coast and it remains very impressive in its scale. Subject to renovations being completed, we hope to visit the Villa Arianna

with its wonderful frescoes and fabulous views over the Bay of Naples. After lunch we visit the Archaeological Museum of Castellammare di Stabia Libero D’Orsi which opened in September 2020 specifically for the exhibition of the many important items found in the region of Stabia. There are a large number of finds on display, some never before exhibited in Italy, including frescoes, inlaid floors, stuccoes, sculptures and tableware.

Day Six | Herculaneum

This morning we head to Herculaneum, which perfectly complements a visit to Pompeii. This seaside city was buried to a significantly greater depth than Pompeii - under 23 metres of pyroclastic to be exact - perfectly preserving every-day objects as well as houses up to their rooftops. In addition to the site, we explore

the Antiquarium, newly opened after 44 years, and which houses precious articles found along Herculaneum’s sea front, including a wellpreserved boat. After lunch we visit Boscoreale to explore Villa Regina, discovered in the late 20th century while digging for the foundations of council housing. In contrast to the opulent villas we have seen on other days, this is a modest small holding which provides us with evidence of how ordinary people lived. Boscoreale is a locality north of Pompeii located on the slopes of Vesuvius, identified by some with the Pagus Augustus Felix Suburbanus. With the inauguration of the Great Pompeii, in October 2023, the Antiquarium of Boscoreale was reopened with a room dedicated to the excavations underway in the suburban villa of Civita Giuliana, with the ceremonial chariot found there in 2021.

Day Seven | Vesuvius - Oplontis

Today, we ascend to the great volcanic crater of Vesuvius. The majority of our journey is by bus, but the final part requires a short walk, which is well worth the effort. The walk starts at Monte Somma, the crater of the AD 79 eruption, where we grasp the scale of it. After the ascent and peering into the crater being forged since the ancient eruption, we will see fumaroles and the layers of previous eruptions, while walking around the perimeter of the crater affords magnificent views over the Bay of Naples. On good days, you can even make out Pompeii. After lunch, we continue on to the impressive villa at Oplontis, which boasts sumptuous frescoes, a bath complex, an enormous swimming pool and interesting slave quarters. This villa was supposedly owned by Emperor Nero and was both destroyed and subsequently preserved by Vesuvius’ eruption.

Day Eight | Cava de’ Tirreni - Naples

After breakfast we transfer to Naples Airport to make our independent onward journeys.

Day One | Algiers

Day Two | Algiers

We visit two city centre museums: the Bardo Museum, and the Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Arts. After lunch, we explore the Kasbah, built on the ruins of old Icosium. Despite its turbulent history, the Casbah of Algiers remains the largest old walled city in North Africa and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day Three | Cherchell & Tipasa

We spend the day west of Algiers along the Mediterranean. We reach Cherchell, Phoenician Iol and Roman Caesarea, which was once the capital of King Juba II and his wife Cleopatra Selene. In the afternoon, we visit Tipasa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We also stop at the impressive ‘Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania’.

Day Four | Algiers - Annaba

We fly to Annaba for a late lunch and an afternoon visit to Hippo Regius, where St. Augustine spent his final days in AD 430. The isolated ruins of this ancient port are dominated by the 19th-century basilica of St. Augustine, which we visit alongside the archaeological site.

We visit the theatre and museum at Guelma, where Jugurtha defeated the Romans. Continuing south to Khemissa, we explore ruins including a forum, temples, and a basilica from the second century AD. En route to Constantine, we stop at Massinissa’s tomb and the site at El Khroub

Day Six | Tiddis & Constantine

In the morning, we visit the ochre-red ruins of Tiddis, a Berber site adapted by Roman civilisation. Returning to Constantine, we explore its museum, kasbah, suspension bridge, and the Ottoman-era Palace of Ahmed Bey.

Day Seven | Constantine - Djémila - Setif

We travel west to Djémila, a Roman town on a narrow plateau, founded between AD 96–117. After lunch, we visit the Setif Archaeological Museum, renowned for its Roman mosaics, including the ‘Triumph of Dionysus’.

Day Eight | Setif - Batna

Driving south to Batna, we stop at the Medracen Royal Tomb. In Batna, we explore Lambaesis, the Third Legion Augusta’s military base, with notable structures like its amphitheatre and four-sided arch.

Day Nine | Batna - Timgad - Biskra

We visit Timgad, a Roman city founded by Emperor Trajan in AD 100. Driving through the Aurès Mountains, we stop at the gorges of Tighanimine, the canyon of Rhouffi, and the Balconies of Ghoufi, with sandstone-carved cave dwellings.

Day Ten | Biskara - Algiers

We spend a relaxing morning at a traditional date Palmerie, learning about the cultivation of dates, a vital part of Biskra’s economy. After lunch, we fly to Algiers.

Day One | Rome

Meet the group at our hotel in Rome.

Day Two | Forum & Colosseum

This morning, we start at the Imperial Fora with the famous monument of Trajan’s Column and proceed through the Forum Romanun, the political heart of the city and empire, a site of profound historical events. We continue to the Palatine to visit the ruins of the Imperial palaces and in the afternoon, we explore the Colosseum, the iconic Flavian Amphitheatre – the largest of its type ever constructed. We end the day at the adjacent decorative Arch of Constantine

Day Three | The Appian Way

Today we drive to the Appian Way and visit some of the villas of the senatorial aristocracy found there. Here we see the vast suburban estate of the Quintili, so sumptuous that the emperor Commodus executed its owners and confiscated it. We proceed to the equally extensive Villa of the Emperor Maxentius, built as a dynastic centre for his family. Our last visit is another huge imperial project, the Baths of Caracalla, capable of accommodating thousands at a time.

Day Four | Domus Aurea & Celian Hill

This morning we visit the legendary Golden House, which Emperor Nero built after the great fire of Rome. Next is the extraordinary church

of San Clemente to discover its underground surprises and the Domus Romane Del Celio, Roman houses which date from the 2nd century. Later, we also discover the treasures of Parco Archeologico del Celio.

Day Five | Tivoli

We make the short drive to Tivoli, where the Emperor Hadrian chose to build his palace, Hadrian’s Villa, which sprawls across the rolling countryside at the foot of the hills below the town. In the afternoon, we pay a visit to the great 16th-century Villa D’Este, built by Cardinal Ippolito D’Este, the son of Lucrezia Borgia.

Day Six | Field of Mars & Ara Pacis

This morning we take a walk through part of the Field of Mars, originally an open area lying just outside Rome’s earliest defences. Later we visit the Ara Pacis, an altar commissioned by the Roman Senate to honour the return of Augustus after his campaigns in Gaul. The afternoon is free to spend as you wish.

Day Seven | Rome

On our final day, we leave Rome and travel to the ancient harbour city of Ostia Antica, originally Rome’s first colony which became a thriving port. From Ostia, we continue to make our independent onward journeys.

The Archaeology of Anglesey

Druids, Romans and English Conquest

Anglesey, or Ynys Môn as it is known in Welsh, holds a significant position in the archaeological and historical narrative of Britain. Separated from mainland Wales by the narrow Menai Strait, this tiny island off the northwest coast boats significant concentrations of Neolithic burial chambers, Bronze Age standing stones, and Iron Age hillforts. It was also at the centre of the dramatic encounter between Celtic druids and Roman legions that Tacitus so vividly recorded.

Day One | Bangor

We meet at our hotel in Bangor in time for an introductory talk before dinner.

Day Two | Bryn Celli Ddu & Caer Gybi

This morning, we drive across the Menai Bridge onto Anglesey and visit Bryn Celli Ddu. This impressive Neolithic passage grave continues to fascinate archaeologists because it is actually two monuments, one built on top of an earlier henge. Next, we have arranged access to Barclodiad y Gawres, a decorated chambered tomb. Its location in Anglesey makes it very unusual - tombs of this type are usually only found in Ireland. We continue to Ty Mawr stopping en route to view Llyn Cerrig Bach, an area of marshland (once a natural lake) and the location of the largest iron age hoard discovered to date in Wales. At Ty Mawr we see the remains of about 20 or so round stone houses, stores, and workshops. This site is remarkably well preserved, given that parts of it are 4,000 years old. After lunch we drive to Caer Gybi and view the remains of a small Roman fort. It is one of Europe's only three-walled Roman forts, the fourth side protected by the sea.

Day Three | Dina Dnille & Caernarfon

We visit some interesting fortifications today starting with Dinas Dnille Hillfort an Iron Age prehistoric coastal fort. The constantly eroding soft cliffs have long made it a challenging site to excavate but a monumental stone-built

roundhouse was discovered here a few metres from the cliff edge. Next, we visit Segontium Roman Fort which once formed a critical part of Roman control over the newly conquered Welsh tribes. Coins recovered from excavations show its remarkable longevity - it was garrisoned until around AD 394 and continued to play a part in the defence of the Welsh coast against Irish raiders and pirates. In the afternoon we explore magnificent Caernarfon Castle, one of the greatest buildings of the Middle Ages.

Day Four | Beaumaris Castle & Din Lligwy

We return to Anglesey this morning to visit Beaumaris Castle, the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I. Designed to be even greater than Caernarfon with concentric rings of formidable defences, six great towers and hundreds of arrow loops, it was never completed. We continue to Penmon Priory established in the 6th century with the founding of a monastery by St. Seiriol, a prominent figure in Welsh history. There are well-preserved monastic remains, including a church that still serves as the parish, and a 10th-century cross with intricate carvings. Our last site visit of the day is to Din Lligwy, an excellent example of a fortified hut group, dating from the latter days of the Roman occupation.

We spend the day in and around Nimes, a flourishing modern city. Our first visit is the ancient Roman gate of Porte d’Auguste, then Maison Carrée, one of the best-preserved Roman temples in the world. In the afternoon, we explore the Arènes de Nîmes, a Roman amphitheatre built around 70 AD and the Musée de la Romanité, a contemporary museum offering an immersive experience with over 5,000 artefacts. Afterwards, we continue to the incredible Diane Temple and our last visit is to Tour Magne, which once formed part of the Augustan fortifications protecting the city.

Day Three | Glanum & Pont du Gard

Before leaving St. Remy this morning, we enjoy its vibrant market. We then take a short drive to the Glanum Archaeological Site, an ancient city founded by the Celts. In the afternoon, we drive to the remarkable UNESCO-listed Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge. The Pont du Gard Museum offers the chance to learn more, featuring a variety of exhibits that detail the engineering marvels of Roman aqueducts and the daily life of the Romans who built them.

Day Four | Orange

Today, we head to the historic town of Orange and visit the Arch of Orange, a UNESCO World Heritage site built during the reign of Augustus to celebrate the victories of the Roman army. We explore the Roman Theatre of Orange, originally able to accommodate up to 10,000 spectators, and continue to the History Museum of Orange

This afternoon, we journey to Vaison-la-Romaine, a charming town renowned for its ancient Roman ruins, including a well-preserved theatre, luxurious villas and intricate mosaics. We discover nearby sites such as Puymin, an archaeological site located within the ancient Roman city, and enjoy a leisurely walk down to the Roman Bridge. An example of vigorous ancient Roman engineering, this unique bridge is one of the few surviving Roman bridges with its original decorative arches intact.

Day Five | Arles

Today is spent in Arles, a city of numerous Roman and Romanesque monuments, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including a well-preserved amphitheatre. We visit the Archaeological Museum, with its impressive collection includes mosaics, sculptures, and sarcophagi, along with the remarkably wellpreserved Roman barge, discovered in the Rhône River. We drive back to St. Remy via the Barbegal Aqueduct, an outstanding structure considered one of the most impressive examples of Roman engineering and ingenuity. Used to supply water to the city of Arles, it is unique in its incorporation of a complex watermill system, which is believed to have been used for milling grain.

Day Six | Aix en Provence

This morning, we discover Aix-en-Provence, a city famous for its thermal springs and charming Old Town, filled with narrow streets, fountains and beautifully preserved buildings. We visit Oppidum D’entremont, established in the 2nd century BCE and home to some impressive fortifications, including a large defensive wall and gate. We start our exploration of Ravenna with a series of incredible monuments, including the Arian Baptistery and the Neonian Baptistery, converted from a Roman bath. We continue to Ravenna Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace with its museum and private chapel of Saint Andrew. In the afternoon we visit the 4th-century Church of San Giovanni Evangelista

First is Theodoric’s Palace, followed by the adjacent Basilica di Sant’ Apollinare Nuovo. Day Two | Segesta & Monreale

We find the ancient Greek city of Segesta, home to an elegant but unfinished 5th-century BC Doric temple then we make our way to Monreale, the former hunting ground of the Norman kings of Sicily.

Day Three | Palermo

The wonders of Palermo awaits, from the Archaeological Museum, which houses significant collections of Punic and Ancient Greek art, to the beautifully decorated church of La Martorana and the neighbouring Chiesa di San Cataldo. Next is Palermo Cathedral and a private visit to the Cappella Palatina

Day Four | Cefalù & Himara

Discover the charming little port of Cefalù. Later, we visit the archaeological park at Himera, the site of the legendary battle between the Greeks and Carthaginians in 480 BCE.

Day Five | Palermo – Motya - Marsala

This morning we drive to Marsala then cross by boat to the island of Motya. While on Motya we visit the Archaeological Museum, taking time to admire its world-renowned statue of the charioteer, a striking sculpture from the early 5th century BCE.

Day Six | Selinus

We start at the Cave di Cusa, used by Selinus for their titanic temples. Their heavy work was abandoned in 409 BCE when Carthaginians

mercilessly sacked their city, a common refrain in the violent history of Sicily. We then travel on to Selinus and finish at the Acropolis of Selinus

Day Seven | Agrigento

We explore the remains of Agrigento today, the site of the ancient Greek city of Akragas and take in the Valley of the Temples, a World Heritage Site of seven Doric sanctuaries. We also view the remains of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, another Sicilian temple, with an unusual layout characterised by enormous telemons.

Day Eight | Piazza Armerina – MorgantinaOrtygia

Our journey takes us through central Sicily, stopping at the magnificent Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina before we travel to Morgantina, a city founded by the native Sikels under their leader Ducetius.

Day Nine | Syracuse

Today is all about Syracuse, which Cicero described as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”. Highlights include the Neapolis Archaeological Park, home to the Great Theatre where Aeschylus’ tragedies were once performed, before a walk around Ortygia, the city’s oldest part.

Day Ten | Ortygia & Noto

Enjoy time exploring the wonderful island of Ortygia this morning. Later, we proceed to Noto, a baroque fantasy of a city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This afternoon we visit the late Roman villa at Tellaro, which contains fine mosaics depicting scenes such as the ransom of Hector’s body.

We return to Catania for our independent onward journeys.

Day Two | London – Chichester

Today, we visit two splendid Roman residences. Starting at Bignor Roman Villa, we explore its well-preserved rooms and bathhouse, showcasing England's finest Roman mosaics. In the afternoon, we head to Fishbourne Roman Palace, a vast complex with mosaic floors, hypocaust heating, and formal gardens, likely owned by Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus, a pro-Roman British king.

Day Three | Chichester - Blandford Forum

Heading west, we visit Portchester Castle, a key Saxon Shore fort built in the 3rd century AD. Next, we explore Maiden Castle, a monumental Iron Age hill fort with immense earthworks. Our day ends at Dorset Museum, showcasing finds from Sir Mortimer Wheeler's 1930s excavations.

Day Four | Blandford Forum - Bath

We visit Hod Hill, an Iron Age hill fort adapted by the Romans during Vespasian’s invasion. Continuing north, we reach Bath to explore the Roman Baths,

built around natural hot springs revered by the Durotriges tribe long before Roman arrival.

Day Five | Bath - Caerleon - Chester

Crossing into Wales, we visit Caerleon, one of three permanent Roman legionary fortresses in Britain. In the afternoon, we drive to Wroxeter, exploring the remains of Viriconium, one of Roman Britain's largest cities.

Day Six | Chester - Carlisle

In Chester, we visit Deva Victrix, a vital Roman fortress and base for the Twentieth Legion. Highlights include the amphitheatre and Grosvenor Museum. Later, we head north, stopping at Ribchester Roman Museum in the Ribble Valley.

Day Seven | Vindolanda & Corbridge

We explore the Stanegate frontier, visiting Vindolanda, renowned for its preserved wooden writing tablets, and the nearby Roman site of Corbridge, with its fascinating museum.

Day Eight | Houseteads & Chesters

Today, we explore Hadrian’s Wall. Starting at Housesteads Roman Fort, we walk to Milecastle 37 before visiting the Temple of Mithras at Carrawburgh and Chesters, the most complete Roman cavalry fort in Britain.

Day Nine | Carlisle - Edinburgh

Crossing into Scotland, we stop at Trimontium Museum, showcasing finds from Trimontium, a major Roman frontier post. Arriving in Edinburgh, we visit the National Museum of Scotland.

Day Ten | Cramond & Edinburgh

We visit Cramond, a Roman frontier fort and later chapel site, before returning to Edinburgh for a free afternoon to relax or explore its historical landmarks.

We explore the Antonine Wall, visiting Callander Park, Kinneil, Rough Castle with its unique lilia pits, and Bar Hill, the highest fort on the wall.

Day Two | Athens

Our first full day is dedicated to the Acropolis and its museum. We walk through ancient Athens and then climb to the incomparable Acropolis, which still dominates the city with a complex of religious sanctuaries, most famous of which is the Parthenon – ‘Chamber of the Maiden’. Built in the 5th century to house a colossal statue of Athena, patron goddess of the city, the views from here are simply stunning. After lunch in the Plaka, we visit the fabulous Acropolis Museum, which is consistently rated as one of the best museums in the world.

Day Three | Athens

We continue our exploration of Athens, visiting its ancient economic centre, the Agora, where a wide range of goods were shipped in from the nearby port of Piraeus and members of the elected democracy assembled to discuss affairs of state. Next, we visit Kerameikos, named in ancient times after the hero Keramos, son of Dionysus and Ariadne, where an extensive cemetery was excavated during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Day Four | Athens

In the morning, we travel to Piraeus, which once consisted of three separate harbours - Kantharos, Zea and Munichia. All three harbours are still used today but since the sea level has risen two metres since antiquity, many of the ancient installations of Piraeus are now underwater. Excavations still continue, however, and notable finds have included several bronze statues, perhaps the most famous being of Apollo now in the Piraeus Archaeological Museum. Afterwards, we make our way to the airport for our independent onward journeys.

This tour of Northern Greece is full of fantastic archaeological sites, marked over the centuries by a cornucopia of peoples and cultures from the Macedonians, Thracians and Slavs to the Romans, Byzantines, Slavs and Ottomans. We follow in the footsteps of conquerors and travel through landscapes dotted with canyons, lakes, waterfalls and rivers in an area thick with history. We discover famous sanctuaries and monuments to victory, palaces, painted tombs and exquisite pebble mosaics which survive at the Macedonian cities of Verghina and Pella. There is much on offer, from the beautiful lakeside town of Kastoria, a town largely undiscovered by tourists, to Thessaloniki, a city whose historical importance and legacy can be said to rival that of Constantinople.

Day One | Thessaloniki – Kastoria

Meet the group at either Thessaloniki airport or in Kastoria, a beautiful lakeside town situated on a rocky isthmus on the shores of Lake Orestiada.

Day Two | Kastoria

Kastoria boasts more than 70 Byzantine and postByzantine churches dating from the 9th to the 16th centuries scattered around the town, many with astonishing frescoes. We see a small selection at Agios Stephanos, Taxiarchis Oikonomou and Archangel Michael, each concealing something unique behind their intricate brickwork. Later, we explore Dispilio, the site of a large Neolithic settlement.

Day Three | Kastoria - Edessa

Before we leave the region, we visit the Aigos Orestiko Archaeological Museum, before continuing to Edessa, with its striking waterfalls. We admire their thundering beauty before following the road over the Ottoman bridge that carried the Via Egnatia across the river. Later, we head to Mezia and visit the Nymphaeum where Aristotle instructed the pupils of the Macedonian elite, Alexander the Great among them, in political discourse and philosophy.

Day Four | Edessa – Aigai - Thessaloniki

Today is dedicated to Verghina (ancient Aigai), the capital of the Macedonian kingdom, where we see the remarkable painted tombs, displayed in the excellent site Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai. We also visit the newly opened Palace of Aigai, once one of the largest buildings in Classical Greece, as well as the new Polycentric Museum of

Aigai, before continuing to Thessaloniki for our first night in this fascinating city.

Day Five | Pella – Thessaloniki

Our first visit today is to Pella, the birthplace of both Philip II and Alexander the Great. We see the monumental agora, houses and the exceptional mosaics made from carefully selected natural pebbles here. In the afternoon, we return to Thessaloniki to visit the extraordinary Archaeological Museum, featuring the Derveni bronze crater.

Day Six | Dion

We travel south along the coastline to Dion at the foot of Mount Olympus, the religious capital of Macedonia. It is here that both Philip II and Alexander used to celebrate their victories by holding Olympic Games and magnificent receptions. We also visit the nearby small Archaeological Museum.

Day Seven | Thessaloniki

Today is devoted to Thessaloniki, founded by King Cassander as a new capital city. We explore the city on foot, taking in the Agora and Roman forum before heading to the Late Roman palace complex of Galerius to view the Rotunda and the Triumphal Arch of the emperor. Next is short walk along the promenade to see the White Tower before lunch and in the afternoon, we visit two of the city’s oldest churches, Aghios Dimitrios and Aghia Sophia, and the UNESCO World Heritagelisted, Walls of Thessaloniki. A visit to the adjacent Byzantine Museum completes our survey of the region’s archaeology.

Day Two | Ioannina & Dodona

We begin our exploration of Ioannina, a picturesque Greek town that once thrived as the medieval heart of Ali of Tepelena's realm, famously depicted in Byron's Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage

Our walking tour includes the Castro and the Archaeological Museum, showcasing finds from Dodona, including pilgrim's questions and answers. In the afternoon, we visit Dodona, Greece's oldest oracle, where Zeus communicated through rustling oak leaves. The site hosts massive festivals and one of Greece's largest ancient theatres.

Day Three | Nikopolis

Our day is dedicated to Nikopolis, or 'Victory City', built by Augustus after the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE to secure Roman control over Western Greece. Nikopolis housed veteran Roman soldiers and forcibly relocated locals from towns like Kassope. We visit the Actian sanctuary, featuring an altar, theatre, stadium, museum, and ancient city centre remnants. On our return to Ioannina, we pause at the Haigos Giorgios aqueduct, which once supplied water to Nikopolis's Nymphaeum complex.

Day Four | Arta & Orraon

We journey south to Arta on the Ambracian Gulf, a significant Byzantine centre and capital of Pyrrhus of Epirus. Our visit includes the Archaeological Museum, the uniquely Byzantine Church of Panagia Parigoritissia, and the impressive Arachthos River bridge, an engineering marvel. Returning to Ioannina, we explore the fortified Hellenistic city of Orraon, featuring well-preserved houses, fortified walls with towers, and a strategic cistern, crucial for guarding the passage from the Amvrakikos Gulf to the Ioannina basin.

Day Five | Kassope & Nekromateion

We start at the Hellenistic city of Kassope, perched high in the hills with stunning views of the Ambracian Gulf, where the battle of Atrium occurred. Kassope is a model city, boasting an agora, theatre, and regular street grid, though abandoned for Nicopolis's population. In the afternoon, we visit the Nekromateion of the Acheron on the Ionian coast, a site shrouded in controversy, possibly linked to the oracle of the dead known from classical texts.

Day One | Tirana

Day Two | Tirana

We explore Albania’s capital, Tirana, visiting the city center, the Ethen Bay Mosque, and the National Historical Museum, which showcases Albania's rich history from prehistory to classical times. In the afternoon, we visit Bunkart 1, a former nuclear bunker turned museum, highlighting life under communist rule.

Day Three | Tirana – Appollonia - Saranda

We drive to Apollonia Archaeological Park, an important Greek colony site, surrounded by olive and oak trees. After exploring the ruins and museum, we travel along the scenic Ionian coast, stopping for lunch in Vlora before reaching Saranda.

Day Four | Butrint

We spend the day at Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site, exploring its historical monuments. After a picnic at Butrint Castle, we visit the museum and cross the Vivari Channel to see the Venetian Triangular Fortress.

Day Five | Saranda - Gjirokastra

Day Six | Gjirokastra - Byllis - Berat

We head northwards and along the valley of the mighty river Vjosa round to the ruins of Byllis

According to legend, the city was founded by warriors led by Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles, returning from the Trojan wars. After lunch, we visit the excavated Byllis Cathedral, before continuing onwards to Berat and enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Day Seven | Berat - Kruja

Today we shift from classical to medieval times and focus on the attractive town of Berat. Here we explore Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques and the Onufri Museum, home to a spectacular collection of 16th-century religious artwork.

Day Eight | Durres

We visit Durres, exploring the ancient Dyrrachium, its 2nd-century amphitheater, and mighty walls. We continue to Kruja, visiting the Skanderbeg Museum and Ottoman bazaar, representing Albania's diverse influences.

Day Nine | Kruja

This morning, we transfer from Kruja to the airport to make our independent onward journeys.

Today we leave the Ionian and cross the mountains to arrive in Gjirokastra. This amazing Ottoman city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and we shall have the chance to visit the Gjirokastra Museum, the medieval Fortress and the National Museum of Arms. Day One | Tunis

Day Two | Carthage

Today is devoted to Carthage, now a wealthy suburb of Tunis, but scattered with the remains of this once great Phoenician city. We start our day at Byrsa Hill, once the citadel and a central feature of the Punic settlement. Next, we continue to Salambo Tophet and Cothon, or harbour, a testament to Carthage’s famous maritime might, the Roman Antonine Baths.

Day Three | Tunis

We visit the renowned Bardo Museum, housed in a historic Beylical palace. It features one of the world's top mosaic collections, including the Virgil and Odysseus mosaics. Later, we head south of Tunis to examine a section of the Carthage aqueduct at Jebel Oust, then explore Oudna, a city founded by Emperor Augustus.

Day Four | Tunis - Dougga

Today is dedicated to the magnificent site of Dougga, perched high on the hill above fertile olive groves. Dougga is one of the oldest towns in Tunisia. Its native ancestry and hillside location resulted in a winding street plan, rather than a typical Roman grid. Here, we visit the theatre and the famous Capitolium. We also explore bath complexes, houses and sanctuaries, all in the kind of peace no longer found at European sites.

Day Five | Bulla Regia

We start at the ancient site of Musti, once a town of some importance but still largely unexcavated before continuing north to Bulla Regia, stopping at Testour, a 17th-century town shaped by Jewish and Muslim communities fleeing the Spanish Inquisition.

After lunch, we explore Bulla Regia, featuring rare, well-preserved subterranean Roman houses.

Day Six | Dougga - Kairouan

We head southwest to the charming site of Thuburbo Majus, originally Punic and later a Roman veteran colony. Highlights include the forum with the Capitolium, Winter and Summer Baths, the Palaestra of Petronius and a notable latrine. We also visit Punic-flavoured temples: the Temple of Baalit and the Temple of Caelestis. In the afternoon, we travel to Kairouan, Tunisia’s key religious city, founded by the Umayyads in the 7th century AD.

Day Seven | El Djem

Heading southeast to El Djem, originally the Numidian city Thysdrus, we find a wealthy olive oil hub in the 2nd century AD. Next, we visit the Museum of El Djem, showcasing Tunisia's finest mosaics and Roman townhouse foundations in its gardens. Returning to Kairouan, we explore the Great Mosque and wander through the Medina's winding streets, shops and courtyard houses.

Day Eight | Kairouan - Hammamet

We start in Kairouan at the viewpoint over the Aghlabid pools, 9th-century reservoirs once praised by Arab geographers for their grandeur. Next, we visit the Barber Mosque, the burial site of Abu Zama El Belaoui. In the afternoon, we head north to Sousse. The Sousse Museum showcases exceptional mosaics, especially from the Roman period when Hadrumetum thrived through trade. We then continue north to Hammamet.

Day Nine | Kerkouane

We travel along the Cap Bon coastline to Kerkouane, a UNESCO-listed site from the 7th to 3rd century BCE, abandoned after the First Punic War. We visit the site museum with remains from

the necropolis. After lunch, we head to Nabeul to visit its small museum before returning to the hotel.

Day Ten | Hammamet - Tunis

We transfer to Tunis Airport for our independent onward travel.

Our journey begins in Bologna with a visit to the Archaeological Museum with its impressive array of artefacts, housed in the 15th-century Palazzo Galvani. We then proceed to Salaborsa, a multimedia library in Palazzo d'Accursio with a transparent floor revealing ancient excavations. Next is Basilica San Petronio, a grand Italian Gothic cathedral, followed by Santuario Santo Stefano, known as sette chiese (seven churches).

After breakfast, we explore Ferrara’s treasures, beginning at the medieval Castello Estense, a moated fortress with towers, drawbridges and opulent rooms. Next, we visit the 12th-century Cattedrale San Giorgio and the National Archaeological Museum of Ferrara in Palazzo Costabili, renowned for its Etruscan artefacts from Spina. Post-lunch, our final stop is the Renaissance Palazzo Schifanoia, built for the Este family and home to significant 15th-century frescoes.

Day Four | Comacchio

Today, we head to Comacchio, 'Little Venice', with its scenic canals and bridges. We visit the Museum of the Ancient Delta, showcasing a well-preserved Roman shipwreck from the 1st century BCE. After

lunch, we drive back to Bologna, stopping at the 9th-century Pomposa Abbey, known for its Carolingian manuscripts.

Today, we explore Modena, starting with its UNESCO-listed cathedral and a climb up Ghirlandina Tower for panoramic views. We then visit the Baroque Ducal Palace with its apartments adorned with frescoe. After lunch, we visit the Mutina Archaeological Park, revealing Roman-era roads and buildings.

We visit Parma, renowned for art and cuisine. Highlights include Teatro Farnese, a 17th-century wooden theatre, and the Baptistery, made from pink Verona marble. This morning we visit the Île de la Cité. This area of Paris is home to many famous sites, but our goal is the infamous Palais de Justice and hidden within it, Sainte Chapelle. This architectural masterpiece was built to accommodate holy relics acquired by Louis IX in 1239 and it ranks as one of the greatest examples of Gothic art in France alongside the cathedrals of Notre Dame and Chartres. We make an unusual visit to the Egouts, a complex network of tunnels which mirror the city streets. Day Four | Sacré Coeur & Musée de Montmartre

We head to Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement. This hilltop right bank neighbourhood with its narrow alleys and cobbled lanes retains some of the famous village atmosphere that appealed so much to the artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Here we visit the snow-white confection of Sacré Coeur and the nearby unsung gem, the Church of St. Pierre. There is a Roman temple to Mars tucked away within its holy grounds and we admire the spolia repurposed within the church. We end the day at the Musée de Montmartre

Day Five | Arènes de Lutèce & Catacombes de Paris

We explore the city’s Romano-Gallic origins with a visit to the Arènes de Lutèce, site of the Roman amphitheatre. Built in the 2nd century AD, it was designed to seat up to 15,000 people. In the afternoon we visit the Musée de Cluny where we visit the Roman baths that lurk beneath the museum. We end the day with a visit to the Catacombes de Paris. After several years of modernisation and accessibility work, the museum reopened in May 2022 with a brand new museography.

Day One | Beijing

We meet as a group for lunch, and then in the afternoon we visit the Forbidden City, or Palace Museum. Built between 1406 and 1420 during the Ming Dynasty, this vast imperial palace complex served as the home of Chinese emperors and the ceremonial and political centre of the Chinese government for almost 500 years, and we will explore its succession of halls and courtyards and admire an extraordinary collection of artwork and artifacts from China’s imperial past.

Day Two | Beijing

Upon our morning arrival in Beijing, we proceed to our hotel, regroup for lunch and head to the Forbidden City, or Palace Museum. Tickets for the Forbidden City cannot be pre-purchased. If faced with any difficulty, such as long queues, we will opt for a visit to the Imperial Palace.

Day Three | Beijing

This morning, we visit Tiananmen Square and National Museum. After lunch, we explore the Temple of Heaven.

Day Four | Beijing

We visit the Summer Palace and Fahai Temple at Cuiwei Mountain.

Day Five | Beijing

We visit the Ming Dynasty Tombs and The Sacred Way, flanked by carved stone sculptures depicting mythical animals. We then visit the Great Wall at the Mutianyu section.

We take our first high-speed train through the Wei Valley's fertile plains and hills, arriving in Luoyang in the afternoon, before we visit the Longmen Caves

We drive to Dengfeng, visiting the Pagoda Forest and Shaolin Temple, famous for its warrior monks. We will watch Kung Fu performances.

Before departing Luoyang, we visit the Ancient Tombs Museum. We then take the train to Xi’an, the Silk Road's starting point.

We spend the morning with Xi’an’s Terracotta Army then visit Banpo Neolithic Village, where a 6,500-year-old settlement was unearthed.

We visit the Han Jingdi Tomb and Shaanxi Provincial History Museum to view Tang Dynasty exhibits.

We travel by high-speed train to Chengdu, Sichuan Province's capital. After lunch, we visit Jinsha, an ancient Shu civilization site.

We start at Sanxingdui, with artifacts from 1700-1150 BCE. After lunch, we visit Qingyang Palace, one of the oldest Taoist temples.

We meet in the afternoon for a visit to Warwick Castle, home of the powerful Beauchamp earls of Warwick and Richard Neville, ‘the Kingmaker’. We see the interesting additions made to the castle by Richard III, the Bear and Clarence towers, showing the king’s interest in artillery. In the evening we enjoy an introductory lecture on Richard III at our hotel.

Day Two | Stony Stratford & Fotheringhay

We make a morning stop at Stony Stratford, where Richard took possession of Edward V in 1483, and then lunch at Delapré Abbey, discussing the significance of the battle of Northampton (1460), which took place in the abbey grounds. In the afternoon we visit Fotheringhay Church, mausoleum of Richard III’s family, the house of York.

We also discover the remains of the castle, where Richard was born in 1452, and the scene of the trial and execution of Mary Queen of Scots.

Day Three | Leicester

We make a morning visit to Bosworth Battlefield Centre, the fateful clash that brought the Wars of the Roses to an end with Richard III’s death and the accession of the first Tudor king, Henry VII. In the afternoon we travel to Leicester’s King Richard III Visitor Centre, which tells the story of the discovery of his remains, and the Cathedral, where we see his striking new tomb.

Day Four | Warwick

In the morning we enjoy a walking tour of Warwick, taking in more of its fascinating medieval history, followed by a concluding talk on Richard III.

Today we start our exploration of Ravenna with a visit to the Arian Baptistery. Inside, its cupola features the renowned mosaic of the Baptism of Christ, depicting Him immersed in the River Jordan. This iconographic design is also present in the nearby Neonian Baptistery, our next stop. Our morning concludes at the Archiepiscopal Museum, home to the pulpit of Maximian, a distinguished ivory work crafted by Byzantine artists in the 6th century. Post-lunch, we delve into Ravenna Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace, which houses a museum and the private chapel of Saint Andrew. Our day concludes with a visit to the 5th-century church of San Giovanni Evangelista, constructed as an ex voto by Galla Placidia following her escape from a shipwreck.

Day Three | Ravenna

We Basilica di Sant’ Apollinare Nuovo, Theodoric’s palatine chapel. Despite its unassuming exterior, its interior fosters an atmosphere of solemnity. Day Four | Ravenna

This morning, we visit the Palace of Theodoric, linked to the Ostrogothic King who governed from Ravenna post the Western Roman Empire's fall. Next, we explore the extraordinary Domus of the Stone Carpets, situated beneath the late-baroque Church of Sant’Eufemia. In the afternoon, we journey south of Ravenna to Classe. Here, we visit the Basilica di San Apollinare and the fascinating Classe Archaeological Museum

Day Five | Pomposa & Ravenna

This morning, we embark on a scenic drive to the Abbey of Pomposa, established in the 7th century amidst marshes and lagoons. It boasts a fine 12th-century mosaic floor and frescoes. In the afternoon, we visit Theodoric’s Mausoleum, one of Italy's most impressive remnants of late Roman architecture.

Days One | Tashkent

Meet the group at our hotel in Tashkent. In the afternoon, we visit the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan. Highlights here include the remains of a prehistoric man dating from 1.5 million years BC as well as significant statues and reliefs from the country’s Buddhist period. This evening, we enjoy a group dinner together.

Day Two | Tashkent

We journey to the ancient settlement of Shahrukhiyah, the first major city of the Tashkent oases along the Great Silk Road. Returning to Tashkent, we embark on a walking tour. Highlights include Chorsu Bazaar and Hast Imam Square, featuring the Tellya Sheik Mosque

Day Three | Tashkent - Nukus

We fly west to Nukus, capital of the Karakalpakstan Republic, a desert region surrounding the shrinking Aral Sea and visit Gyaur Kala. After lunch, we explore Mizdakhan, home to Uzbekistan’s oldest necropolis.

Day Four | Nukus - Khiva

We begin at the renowned Savitsky Art Museum, featuring the world’s second-largest Russian avant-garde collection. Afterward, we travel along the Amu River to Chilpik Dakhma, a Zoroastrian “Tower of Silence” used for sky burials until the 7th-century. We conclude in Khiva, a Silk Road city historically linked to the slave trade.

Day Five | Khiva

We explore the hilltop fortresses of Ayaz Kala, built to defend against nomadic incursions. Next, we visit Toprak Kala, a 3rd-century AD city of the

Khorezm civilisation. Its ruins feature governors’ residences and a palace with three imposing towers.

Day Six | Khiva

Today, we wander Khiva’s charming alleys, elegant minarets, and bustling markets. Despite destruction by Genghis Khan, its reconstruction is remarkable. The first Uzbek site to gain World Heritage status, Khiva boasts original defensive walls, ornate mosques, and mausoleums.

Day Seven | Khiva - Bukhara

We journey to Bukhara, an oasis city renowned for its architectural marvels. Once part of the Persian Empire, it became an intellectual hub under the Samanids. Highlights include the Po-iKalyan complex, spared by Genghis Khan for its transcendence. A traditional folk show accompanies dinner tonight.

Day Eight | Bukhara

We visit Poykent, a predecessor to Bukhara, abandoned due to the drying Zarafshan River. After a picnic lunch, we return to Bukhara for further exploration and leisure time.

Day Nine | Bukhara

We revisit Poykent and enjoy a picnic at the Poykent Museum. In Bukhara, we explore landmarks like the Mausoleum of Ismail Samani and Bolo Haus Mosque

Day Ten | Bukhara - Samarkand

Travelling to Samarkand, we cross scenic Uzbek plains, stopping at Rabat-i Malik, an 11th-century caravanserai with a Persian façade.

Day Eleven | Samarkand

We explore Samarkand, visiting the Ulugh Beg Observatory, Shah i Zinda necropolis, Registan Square, and the ancient site of Afrasiab.

Day Twelve | Samarkand

Our final day begins at the Gur-i-Amir Mausoleum, followed by the Bibi-Khanym Mosque. After lunch, we return to Tashkent by high-speed train, concluding with a farewell dinner.

Day One | Hamburg - Aarhus

Meet the group at Hamburg Airport to travel to Aarhus in Denmark stopping on route to explore the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Hedeby and Danevirke. These important Viking trading towns are situated on the Schleswig isthmus, the narrowest strip of land between the Baltic and the North Sea, and they once secured the border area between Scandinavia and Central Europe. Excavations at both sites have revealed the Vikings international links. After our site visits we continue to Aarhus our base for the next three nights.

Day Two | Ribe - Jelling - Ravning Enge

Our morning visit is to Ribe, Denmark’s oldest town, with remains from the 8th century AD. We then see the stone ship setting at Baekka, erected by a chieftain for his mother, Vibrog. In the afternoon, we visit Jelling, a UNESCO site with rune-inscribed stones and burial mounds. We end at Ravning Enge, site of a large Viking bridge.

Day Three | Fyrkat - Lindenhoje

This morning, we explore Fyrkat Fort, a Viking fortress from King Harald Bluetooth’s reign. After lunch, we visit Lindholm Hoje, a grave site with nearly 700 graves spanning 500 years.

Day Four | Aarhus - Ladby - Copenhagen

We visit the Ladby ship burial, preserved beneath a mound. We tour the Ladby Museum before crossing the Great Belt Bridge to Zeeland for a visit to Trelleborg. The annual Viking Festival features ‘The Battle of Trelleborg’.

Day Five | Gammel Lejre - Roskilde

We explore Gammel Lejre, a royal centre associated with Beowulf. At Roskilde, the Viking Ship Museum

displays well-preserved ships excavated from the fjord. We may sail a replica Viking ship before visiting the cathedral, the burial place of Danish royalty.

Day Six | Copenhagen

We visit the National Museum in Copenhagen, showcasing prehistoric and Viking artefacts. The afternoon is at leisure or exploring Copenhagen’s historic centre.

Day Seven | Copenhagen - Stockholm

We depart Copenhagen, travelling by train over the Øresund Bridge to Stockholm. The journey reveals landscapes transitioning from countryside to forests and lakes. Arrival in Stockholm is in the late afternoon.

Day Eight | Anundshög & Uppsala

We visit Anundshög, Sweden’s largest royal burial mound, then Gamla Uppsala, home to royal burial mounds and the kyrka church. Legends of sacrifices to Norse gods enrich our visit to the Gamla Uppsala Historical Centre

Day Nine | Sigtuna & Stockholm

We visit Sigtuna, founded by Erik the Victorious, with its preserved main street. Back in Stockholm, the Historik Museum showcases gold and silver artefacts and Viking archaeological finds.

Day Ten | Birka

We take a boat to Birka, a UNESCO-listed Viking town on Björkö island. Founded in 750, Birka was a major trading centre. A silver ring with Arabic inscription found here highlights its historical significance.

We will visit the amazingly complex Vasa warship before taking a walk around Gamle Stan, the Old Town which occupies the island of Stadsholmen. It is not a Viking Age town, since it dates from the 13th century, but it retains its medieval street pattern with numerous narrow alleyways and staiths leading to the commercial waterfront. Afterwards we transfer to the airport in Stockholm to make our independent onward journeys.
