General Manager Dear Members, As we welcome September, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for an incredible summer at Sparrows Point Country Club. From the Fourth of July celebrations and busy days on the golf course to afternoons at the pool and evenings filled with friends and family, it has truly been a fantastic season. A special thank you to everyone who helped make our pool season such a success. We hope the pool, Tiki Bar, and the many memories made there were a highlight of your summer. We are incredibly grateful for the continued support and enthusiasm of our membership. As we turn the page toward fall, there is plenty to be excited about. The changing season brings beautiful days on the golf course, new events and activities, and another opportunity to enjoy everything Sparrows Point has to offer. With our continued membership growth and the tremendous momentum we've built throughout the year, we are excited about what lies ahead. Golf Course Reconf iguration I wanted to take this opportunity to outline the ongoing improvements to the Club and golf course as the Cove at Sparrows Point moves into its next phase. Much rumor has been "abuzz" about upcoming changes to the course, and I'd like to provide an update. Beginning on October 19th, you will see some changes to the course layout. What is currently Championship Hole 3 and Hole 4 will temporarily go off line to accommodate changes to the property as we move into the next steps of redevelopment. At the same time, Practice Hole 1 will return to service as Championship Hole 1, and Practice Hole 4 will return to service as Championship Hole 2 in the form of a Par 3. What is now Championship Hole 1 will become Championship Hole 3, Championship Hole 2 will become Championship Hole 4, and the rest of the course will remain as is. At a date still to be determined, the Driving Range will also temporarily return to its original location at the entrance of the property near Wise Avenue. The Golf team has been diligently working to prepare for this reconfiguration - everything from course rating & slope, scorecards, range netting and more has been part of this planning. We also have been diligently maintaining these two Practice Loop holes with the same maintenance program as the Championship golf course! Of course, it can be difficult to visualize these changes from reading a Newsletter, so please don't hesitate to see me, Head Golf Professional Jim Bennett, or Director of Agronomy Brian Dearstine, and we can walk you through this next phase in person! Membership Dear Members, September is one of my favorite times of the year. Football season is back, cooler weather is on the way, and fall golf is right around the corner. It’s a great season to enjoy everything Sparrows Point has to offer, from time on the course to dining and social events around the Club. Billing Hello Members! I am absolutely thrilled to introduce myself as the new Business Operations and Accounting Specialist here at Sparrows Point Country Club. From the moment I stepped onto our beautiful waterfront property, it was clear that this club has an incredibly welcoming community and wonderful staff. As Lori prepares to log off for a well-deserved retirement, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the masterclass in training she provided over the last few weeks. I cannot say thank you to her enough for her patience, structured guidance, and deep industry knowledge. Lori, thank you for sharing your expertise so generously to ensure the club’s continued success. I wish you the absolute best in your next chapter! While much of my daily work will happen behind the scenes, my primary focus is keeping our financial and administrative systems running seamlessly. With a background in accounting and a passion for proactive troubleshooting, I am fully committed to ensuring our back-of-house processes run flawlessly. I believe that for every unique operational challenge, there is an efficient solution. My ultimate goal is to keep a strong, reliable workflow so that our frontline team can focus entirely on delivering an exceptional club and dining experience to you and your guests. Outside of spreadsheets, numbers, and business systems, I love to spend my free time reading, taking craft classes like stained glass making and resin art, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. I am so proud to join the Sparrows Point family and look forward to meeting you all in the coming weeks. As we say goodbye to the last days of summer, we’re excited to welcome the beginning of fall and all the fun that comes with it! It’s been such a pleasure seeing our members enjoying the course, pool, and new Tiki Bar throughout the summer. We hope you’ve made plenty of great memories with friends and family and are ready to keep the good times going into the new season! September is bringing more opportunities to gather, relax, and enjoy everything the club has to offer. Be sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming member events and join us for a drink, a bite, and some time with friends. While summer may be winding down, there’s still plenty to look forward to at the club. We can’t wait to see you this month!

Agronomy Dear Members, It seems once we hit August, the rain started and never stopped! Fortunately, we were able to squeeze in aerification between storms, although the first day was delayed because of weather. Unlike last year, we didn’t have the high temperatures that caused damage to the greens, so we are in good condition heading into September. Aerification went well, and the greens and tees recovered nicely, as did the fairways, which were verticut to help remove thatch. With all the rain, we spent a good portion of August repairing bunkers and playing catch-up with mowing rough. Now, we’re looking ahead to other projects we have coming up, including the course re-routing. October 19th will be the date we make the changeover to the short course having the 2 starting holes as explained in last month’s POI. Before then we’ll be adding a tee box to Short Course 4 in front of the path so access to the range will still be available. We’ll also be repairing the bunkers on Short Course 1 and plugging any weak areas on the green so everything is ready for play. Sod removal on the 4th fairway will continue, with the sod being relocated and planted elsewhere on the course so it will be utilized instead of plowed over. While many of the bigger projects are underway, we’ll also be focusing on some of the smaller details around the course. The yardage plates in the fairways are in desperate need of an update and better visibility. With the fall season approaching and mowing slowing down, we’ll have an opportunity to upgrade and improve the yardage markers. Along with the yardage plaques, we’ll continue cleaning up the ponds and creek areas so that our water views can be what they’re intended to be-water views! Many of the trees, shrubs, and vines along the water’s edge are either dead or an invasive species that need to be removed to prevent them from spreading. As always, we have plenty of projects underway, and it’s a race to get everything completed before winter arrives, which will be here before we know it! If you see me on the course, feel free to ask about any of the ongoing projects.

Chef Mark Sanders RECIPE OF THE MONTH BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 large yellow onion, chopped ½ teaspoon sea salt 1 (3-pound) butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed 3 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage ½ tablespoon minced fresh rosemary 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 3 to 4 cups vegetable broth Freshly ground black pepper For Serving Chopped parsley Toasted pepitas Crusty bread Instructions Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, salt, and several grinds of fresh pepper. Sauté until soft, 5 to 8 minutes. Add the squash and cook until it begins to soften, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes. Add the garlic, sage, rosemary, and ginger. Stir and cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant. Add 3 cups of the broth. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until the squash is tender, 20 to 30 minutes. Let the soup cool slightly, then pour it into a blender, working in batches if necessary. Blend until smooth. If the soup is too thick, add up to 1 additional cup of broth and blend. Season to taste and serve with parsley, toasted pepitas, and crusty bread.

2026 MEN'S & WOMEN'S MATCH PLAY This past month, we were pleased to host the 2026 Men'sand Women's
Match Play Championships. The golf course was in excellent condition for one of the club's major championships. Ryan Rehman captured the Overall Men's Club Championship, securing the match on the 35th hole of the 36-hole final against Will Harris. Jan King defeated Brenda Scott in the Women's Championship final, successfully defending her title from last year. This marks Jan's seventh Match Play Championship at Sparrows Point Country Club. Congratulations to both champions!

The function held at the club was truly overwhelming, and I was deeply moved by the kindness and generosity of our members.
It is this sense of unity that makes Sparrows Point Country Club the best and friendliest club-and one that I am proud to be part of. Along with the membership, I would also like to thank the entire staff, led by Corey Andrews, for handling my duties during my absence. The Golf Shop, led by Rob Moore, handled everything like true professionals, and I could not be more grateful. I look forward to returning to the club on a more consistent basis. I want everyone to know that the club's support has meant everything to my family and me. It has truly lifted my spirits and helped begin my healing journey.

Senior Men’s Golf Group The results from the Picnic Tournament held on August 27 will be reported in the next issue. This year’s event will be the Fran Reese Memorial Member-Guest. You and your guest will enjoy lunch, 18 holes of golf, a cocktail hour and dinner. The tournament will feature six holes each of select-drive alternate shot, scramble and best ball. Prizes will be awarded for each venue, the overall total and, best of all, the Golfing Dog picture for the highest total net score. The “winner” will proudly display the picture at home for the next year. As in previous years, any male golfer age 50 or older is welcome to participate. Guests do not need to be 50 or older but will play from the orange tees.
Ladies League (WGA) August really tested our commitment to golf… and our umbrellas. Rain didn’t just visit this month — it moved in, unpacked its bags, and started forwarding its mail. The Mah Jong Ladies thrived indoors, but the golfers? Let’s just say we’ve become experts at watching radar maps and muttering at clouds. Still, between storms, we managed to sneak in a few tournaments — because nothing stops this group except lightning within 10 miles. Our biggest news this month is a HUGE congratulations to Judy Turnbaugh for her very first Hole-inOne on Hole #5. Yes, you read that right — she didn’t just aim for the cup… she bullseye’d it like she was trying to win a carnival prize. What an accomplishment! The rest of us will now be accepting lessons, autographs, and possibly motivational speeches from Judy. We’re also considering renaming Hole #5 in her honor — or at least installing a small shrine. Way to go, Judy — you made August brighter than the sun we didn’t get this month. We kicked things off with the Lowest Number of Team Putts tournament, where Susan Kennedy and Judy Turnbaugh apparently made a secret pact with the greens. They putted like they were auditioning for the LPGA. Well done, ladies — the rest of us will be over here trying to two-putt without crying. Next came the 3 Clubs and a Putter tournament, otherwise known as “Let’s see how creative we can get before we start swearing.” Most of us groaned our way through it, but Judy Turnbaugh, Donna Cianciola, and Julie Caprio acted like they’d been training for this moment their whole lives. Honestly, we’re not convinced they’ve gone back to full bags yet. The club also hosted the Match Play Championship, and the finals were a treat. In the Championship Flight, Jan King outlasted Brenda Scott in a nail-biter. In the Second Flight, Mary Biemer edged out Donna Cianciola in another tight match. Both were exciting enough that spectators forgot about the humidity for a whole 20 minutes. Congrats to all who battled it out! We also wrapped up the season-long Crystal Match Championship, where some matches went 23 holes — because apparently we don’t believe in quitting. In the end, Judy Turnbaugh and Patrice Milani outlasted Kris Somer and Lisa Lintecum. Major applause to everyone who survived this marathon of a season. And while it’s not technically August news, we absolutely need to give a shout out the ladies who dominated the Summer Solstice Tournament earlier this year. Sue Brodie, Mary Biemer, Donna Cianciola, Mary Cupo, Jan King, Patrice Milani, and Judy Turnbaugh tackled 36 holes in one day like they were strolling through a park. Special kudos to Patrice and Judy for placing in the top four — clearly, they woke up that morning and chose victory. We hope more of you join us next year, because let’s be honest: whatever the men can do, we can do better… and usually with more style, more snacks, and better stories. Here’s to September — may it bring less rain, more sunshine, and fewer excuses for why our putts didn’t drop.
