Membership Dear Members, October is shaping up to be another exciting month at Sparrows Point. The course is in great shape, and with cooler temperatures settling in, I hope everyone has the opportunity to get out and enjoy some fall golf over the coming weeks. On the membership side, I continue to work hard every day to bring new members into the Club and build on the momentum we have created throughout the year. It has been great meeting so many prospective members, showing them around Sparrows Point, and giving them the opportunity to experience the Club for themselves. As we look toward the remainder of the year and beyond, continued improvement remains a major focus throughout the Club. Whether it is growing our membership, enhancing the member experience, or finding new ways to make Sparrows Point an even better place to spend your time, there is plenty to look forward to. Thank you for continuing to make prospective and new members feel welcome. I’m excited about where we are headed and look forward to a great October at the Club!

Food & Beverage Hello, Members! Fall is here, and we have SO much planned for October! Join us for all the fun this month, including our Cocktail Class, Oktoberfest Night at the Club, Trunk or Treat, and Adult Halloween Party! I have truly had so much fun with this new style of Cocktail Class. More than anything, I love getting the opportunity to slow down, hang out, and really connect with all of the members who join us. It has quickly become one of my favorite events! To make sure we continue giving everyone an amazing experience, Cocktail Class is now capped at 10 people. Agronomy Dear Members, We are heading into what I think is the best time of year for golf in Maryland, with cooler temperatures, great course conditions, and quick greens—fall golf. The greens have healed nicely from aerification and are rolling well, our sod projects continue to improve the course, and the fairways and tees are healthy as we head toward winter. With cooler temperatures on the way, it is also the perfect time to seed weak areas caused by cart traffic and ground compaction. Our main rough areas of focus will be the left side of #12 green, the left side of #6 and #9 fairways, and the left side of #7 fairway and green. While we still have some warmer temperatures, we will continue repairing bare areas on tees and fairways. October will be pushing the window for transplanting bermudagrass as we get closer to dormancy, but it will be better than allowing the better Bermuda cultivar to be dug up and go unused. Depending on how late we move the sod, we will use covers to give the grass the best possible chance of making it through the winter. We are also working on areas of the short course that need to be addressed before we make the first short-course holes the starting holes for the main course. #1 green has been seeded and is recovering well following aerification. If there are any bare areas remaining before we make the switch, we will plug those areas with new grass as well. The greenside bunkers will also be filled with sand to provide better playing conditions and lies than the mud currently in them. The new tee area for short course #4, which will become #2 when we make the change, has been seeded and roped off. It will be ready for play when we make the switch in mid-October. October Golf POI As we turn the calendar to autumn, we enter what I believe is the best golf weather of the year in Maryland. SPCC GOLF NEWS Cooler temperatures allow us to enjoy a great golf course, beautifully prepared by Brian and his staff. Our final Major of the year, the Member-Member Tournament, will be held Saturday and Sunday, October 3rd and 4th. Members will compete for the championship while enjoying great food and camaraderie. For more information, please see Jim or Rob in the Golf Shop. 2026 Stroke Play Championship The 2026 Stroke Play Championship was held September 5–7, with exciting finishes in both Championship Flights. Ryan Rehman captured the Men’s Championship and completed the “Double” Championship, carding an even-par 72 in the final round. Caroline Cash claimed the Women’s Championship, besting defending Ladies Champion Jan King. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and competitors! Fall has officiall y tip-toed onto the course, sprinkling leaves across the fairways like confetti at a party we didn’t ask for. A few earl y overachievers are already camouf laging our balls, which means ball-hunt season is upon us. Consider this your reminder to stretch before bending over 47 times per round. Safety first, dignity second. Despite nature’s attempts to sabotage us, we squeezed in a few fun games this month! We kicked things off with Sweet Sixteen, featuring our winners Susan Kennedy, Marcia Middleton, and Patrice Milani — all of whom are definitel y not sixteen, but all of whom have the youthful energy of people who pretend they are when convenient. Next came Sweet and Sour, won by Sue Kump, with Jan King right behind her. We’ll let you decide who was sweet and who was sour… though we’ve seen the scorecards and we have theories. Our big event was the annual Member-Guest Tournament, and as always, it was a smash hit. The theme was Women in Sports, complete with informational tee signs, trivia at lunch provided by Susan Lauer and Julie Caprio, and a Putt for Booze contest— which, admittedl y, has nothing to do with women in sports unless you count it as an “advanced hydration strategy.” The day ended with a frog-strangling cloudburst, but ever yone still walked away a winner thanks to great food, great company, and the promise of dr ying off eventuall y. In non-golf news, our resident baking queen Donna Cianciola competed in the Mar yland State Fair and walked away with 27 ribbons over three weeks of entries. Twenty-seven! The best part? We got to taste a LOT of her entries. Honestl y, we’re not sure how she didn’t win more. Later this month, Sparrows Point will be representing in both the 9-Hole and 18-Hole Interclub Champions Tournaments, plus the 18-Hole WGA State Tournament. Let’s go Sparrows Point — bring home the glor y, the bragging rights, and maybe a souvenir towel if they’re giving those out.
