General Manager

Dear Members, As we move into May, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredibly exciting and rewarding first few months as General Manager of Sparrows Point Country Club. It has truly been a pleasure getting to know so many of you and working alongside such a dedicated and talented team. The sense of community here is something special, and I am grateful to be a part of it.

Looking ahead, Spring & Summer are shaping up to be seasons filled with opportunity and growth for our Club. One of the most encouraging signs of this momentum is our continued membership growth. We are welcoming new faces into the Sparrows Point family, and it’s been wonderful to see both new and longtime members enjoying all that the Club has to offer.

On the golf side, I’m pleased to report that our April aeration process was a success. The course has responded very well, and conditions continue to improve each day. Thank you for your patience during this important maintenance period it ensures a strong and enjoyable playing surface for the season ahead.

As always, I encourage you to join me for Cookies & Conversation every Friday at 11 a.m. in the Trophy Room. These gatherings have quickly become a highlight of my week, and I truly value the opportunity to connect with you in a relaxed setting. Please remember to register in advance.

May is always an exciting time at the Club as we prepare for the unofficial start of summer. We are looking forward to the opening of the pool and a fun-filled Memorial Day celebration for members and their families. Members should look forward to a brand-new, reconstructed Tiki Bar at the pool! In addition, the golf calendar is shaping up for a fantastic summer season, with events and play opportunities for golfers of all levels.

Lastly, I’m very pleased to welcome John Warnack as our new Food & Beverage Director - a role in which he will supervise the food and beverage operation here at Sparrows Point. John brings a wealth of private club experience and fresh ideas, and we are excited for the energy and enhancements he will bring to our dining program. Please join me in giving him a warm Sparrows Point welcome when you see him around the Club.

Thank you all for your continued support and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing you around the Club and continuing to build on the great momentum we have together.

Warm regards, Corey Andrews General Manager | candrews@spcc1925 com

Membership

It is with great sadness that I am stepping away from the Club. I have truly enjoyed my four years here and have loved engaging with so many wonderful members along the way. This community has meant a great deal to me.

I wish the Club continued success and hope every member enjoys their time here as much as I have. There are many exciting and fun things in the pipeline for everyone to enjoy.

In the meantime, while a replacement is being found, Corey Andrews will be a wonderful resource for all members and is available to assist with any questions or concerns.

I also encourage all new members to attend the New Member Mixer on May 14, as it is an important part of your onboarding experience. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get your questions answered by Club management, connect with fellow new members, and meet longtime members who can share the rich history of the Club.

I have extensive executive-level management experience in the Club and hotel industries. Most recently, I served as General Manager of the prestigious Norbeck Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. Prior to joining Norbeck, I spent nearly ten years at the Premier City/Business Club in downtown Baltimore.

As a certified Club Manager and Food & Beverage Executive, I have held senior leadership roles at Clubs across the country, including Baltimore Country Club, Wexford Plantation, The Cordillera Club Properties, To Fazio PGA Course, and Hale Irwin Mountain Course.

I was also part of the team that opened the world-famous Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida, and gained extensive culinary experience as Food & Beverage Manager at the Four Seasons in Washington, DC. I am honored to have earned an Excellence Award from Wine Spectator.

My wife is an Assistant Head of School at Gilman, and we have two sons. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you, hearing your valuable ideas, and learning what makes SPCC so special. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me anytime if you have questions or would like to provide feedback on anything.

Agronomy

Spring aerification was a great success this year, with no equipment breakdowns and full cooperation with the weather. We were able to pull clean cores and incorporate a significant amount of sand into the soil profile, which will improve ball roll and lead to firmer, more consistent greens. The weaker areas have been healing well and have also been overseeded to support full recovery.

We also benefited from several warm days in April, which helped bring the bermudagrass out of dormancy earlier than usual. While consistent growth typically doesn’t begin until midMay, we have already mowed the fairways multiple times. This early start should allow the bermudagrass to better fill in weaker areas throughout the summer, especially where coolseason grasses struggle to compete. Additionally, the tree removal on hole 6 has already made a noticeable impact, improving both fairway health and overall recovery.

As we move into May, our focus will shift to enhancing course playability. This includes repairing bunkers after winter conditions, being strategic with tee placements to maintain strong turf conditions, and creating more variety on the course, especially on the par 3s. Some par-4 tee placements will also be adjusted to provide a different look on certain holes.

After a full year of making improvements-building a strong team, repairing and stabilizing our equipment fleet, and gaining a deeper understanding of the property- I am very optimistic about the season ahead. Taking over and improving a course with limited resources is always a challenge, but we’ve made meaningful progress in a short time. I’m excited to continue that momentum and deliver a great experience throughout the upcoming season!

Congratulations to the Sparrows Point Country Club State Team! Our State Team had won their first match against Greenspring Valley Hunt Club by a score of 11 to 7. We did a great job defending our home course, with 8 ½ points won on our home course. We unfortunately lost the next week against a very good Rolling Road squad.

Thank you to the Members that helped us in both matches and who will continue to compete for a state title in the future.
