General Manager

COREY ANDREWS

I am truly thrilled to become part of your wonderful community. I look forward to stepping into this new role, getting to know each of you, and making a meaningful difference at the Club.

I am a lifelong Baltimore-area resident, originally from Howard County and now living in Canton. An alumnus of UMBC, I come to Sparrows Point Country Club with over a decade of experience in the golf and club industry, most recently serving as General Manager and Director of Sales and Marketing for Waverly Woods and Blue Mash Golf Clubs.

After a year-long hiatus from the golf industry working for a local television group, I am excited to lead the team at Sparrows Point and create memorable experiences for our members and guests as the Club embarks on its next 100 years.

Outside of work, I enjoy golf, fitness, exploring Maryland’s state parks, and traveling.

Please feel free to drop by my office anytime for a brief introduction. I would love to meet you all and get used to your faces one by one.

Join us as we celebrate our winners and launch into an exciting new year. I would love to meet as many of you as I can at this event, during this nice, casual meet and greet. We will also be reintroducing, Jim Bennett, as he returns to SPCC as our Head Golf Pro.

Open to ALL members, and guests are highly encouraged! Bring family, friends, and neighbors who would enjoy a fun, social evening at the Club.

Agronomy

As I write this, we are headed into our fourth week of snow cover on the course. Fortunately, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, as temperatures are rising in the upcoming weeks. This should help melt the remaining snow and ice, allowing us to get back on the course and resume our necessary projects. Being unable to access the course for several weeks has pushed many of our plans back.

What impact does prolonged snow cover have on the course? Snow can provide important benefits, especially during the arctic temperatures we experienced. It acts as insulation, protecting the turf from the low temperatures and negative wind chills, which helps prevent desiccation of the leaf blades. However, extended snow cover can also have potential drawbacks, including limited oxygen exchange to the plant over time. I believe the snow cover was more beneficial than harmful, but we will know more once the turf comes out of dormancy this spring.

With approximately ten inches of snow on the ground, the crew has been limited primarily to indoor work. This has allowed us to complete painting projects, repair accessories, and perform maintenance on equipment and mowers-work that is essential but often difficult to prioritize during the busy season.

We appreciate your patience as we navigate this winter stretch and look forward to getting back on the course!

Who is interested in our SPCC PGA Junior League? We are looking to host an in-house team this year to have your Juniors learn the competitive side of golf! The team will be open to any Junior golfer 13 and under. If we reach a good level of participation, we will hold a once-a-week practice and once-a-week matches starting in April. Your junior golfer will play in a competitive match against two other juniors from SPCC each week. The PGA Junior League format has proven to build your juniors’ teamwork, competitiveness, skill, and enjoyment of the game of golf. If you are interested in having your Junior participate in our junior league this year, please contact the Golf Professional staff for further details.

Lastly, I would like to announce that Jim Bennett, PGA, has accepted the Head Golf Professional position at Sparrows Point Country Club, and his first day is March 2nd! Jim was the Head Professional for the 2022 & 2023 season Please stop at the golf shop to welcome Jim back to The Club!

In Loving Memory of Fran Reese In Loving Memory of Fran Reese

SPCC is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our most cherished longtime members, Fran Reese. For 41 years, Fran was an integral part of our Club family, and his presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Fran brought a vibrant and budding personality to SPCC. He was always quick with a joke, sharing laughter with our staff and fellow members alike. His warmth, humor, and genuine spirit made every visit brighter. We looked forward to seeing Fran each week during golf season, where he enjoyed time on the course, as well as in the Clubhouse playing cards with the guys. Those simple, joyful moments are now treasured memories that will remain a lasting part of our Club’s history.

Fran was more than a member, he was a friend, a familiar smile, and a valued part of SPCC for over four decades. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. He will always hold a special place in our hearts.
