From the Golf Shop

Dear SPCC Golfers,

We’re almost in Fall golf mode now. Time to enjoy one of the BEST golfing months on our calendar. The nasty, oppressive heat we’ve been exposed to for the last two+ months is hopefully behind us now until next Summer. Get out to the Club and enjoy the weather, plus some excellent golf course conditions.

th st,

We have a full and busy September of golf tournaments, fitting days, and private golf outings. We have a Major Golf Tournament each and every weekend for the next 30 days. We kick off the month with our new “Labor Day Partners 27 Game” on September 1 . We look forward to a festive and special week, September 16 -21 commemorating our Centennial year at SPCC.

If you’re looking to improve your SPCC Golf experiences at the Club, participate in as many Club Tournaments/Events as you can. You can also take a Private Golf Lesson and/or participate in a Clinic/PDP Series. We will be completing the Inaugural 2025 SPCC Centennial Cup Series Events, culminating with the 2025 Centennial Cup FINALS SHOOTOUT on September 21 at 2 p.m. There’s still time to register for the last three Events in September if you haven’t already done so in this Centennial Cup Series. Our 2025 Founder’s Cup Matches are into their fifth month of competition, as well as our Two-Man Tango Tournament, which concludes this month.

PACE-OF-PLAY: During busy/peak times is going to be monitored more closely, especially on weekend mornings and afternoons. The maximum time for a Four-ball Group is 4 hours. & 15 minutes. Any Groups that fall behind pace (more than one Hole open in front of you) will be asked to immediately pick up their pace and close the gap within three Holes or will be asked to either move to their pace location behind the Group in front of them or let Groups play through them without delay. Post your Scores!! When playing in an attested Group, you are responsible for posting your Scores. If you don’t post your Score after receiving the Club’s Cap Patrol Score-posting reminder, the SPCC Golf Handicap Committee will post a Score of Par for those non-posted Scores.

Specialized Head Golf Professional at SPCC – Golf Operations

From the Chef

Hello, just a brief introduction of myself to the members. My name is Chef Wm. Mark Sanders (you can call me Chef Mark). I grew up in Westchester County, New York, and got my start in the kitchen after earning a degree in Restaurant Management from SUNY Morrisville. My first night in a professional kitchen was New Year’s Eve of 1986 at the Marco Island Marriott in Florida definitely trial by fire. From there, I had the incredible opportunity to learn under Certified Master Chef Jack Shoop, which really set me on my path.

Over the years, my career has taken me from Florida back home to New York, then down to Georgia, and eventually here to Maryland. Along the way, I’ve worked at some amazing Clubs and organizations, earned my Certified Executive Chef designation, and even had the honor of serving as Executive Chef for Governor Wes Moore and his family.

These days, I’m based in Severna Park. When I’m not in the kitchen, you can usually find me checking out a new craft brewery, catching a Yankees or Cowboys game, or just spending time with family and friends.

I look forward to seeing you around The Club and introducing myself!

Stay tuned for fantastic things happening in the SPCC Kitchen!

Chef Mark Sanders

Agronomy

After a long summer of unfavorable weather, our greens are finally headed into a period of recovery. The combination of longer nights, cooler temperatures, and lower humidity creates ideal conditions for our coolseason grass to bounce back, aided by soil amendments and fertilizer While the turf took a hit during the heat and stress of the past few months, we’re optimistic about the coming weeks. This is the time of year when the grass begins to heal, and with proper care and attention, we expect to see noticeable improvement across the course.

The main issue on the greens is the amount of thatch that held onto the moisture and heat from the rain we had this year, which in turn caused the grass to get so hot that it couldn’t cool itself on its own, or with supplemental irrigation Thatch is an organic layer of dead and living shoots, stems, and roots that develop between the green and soil surface, which gives the puffy feel throughout the summer, instead of a firm surface we are looking for. This layer retains more heat, as well as binding up nutrients and making it harder to get air in the soil for the plant to breathe. Aerification, verticutting, and topdressing with sand reduce this thatch layer over time to give the grass a better growing environment.

While the greens remain our primary focus, we’ll also be sodding some of the collars and parts of the tees In these areas, we’ll be switching to bermudagrass, which is better suited to withstand the heat and stress of summer. This change will help prevent the same level of damage in future seasons and improve overall playability and consistency.

We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout the summer and look forward to improved course conditions in the weeks ahead!

Finally, the first crab feast has happened. Not only did a lot of Crabs get crushed, but the RED team also got crushed. Big thanks to Richie for taking care of the crabs. The kitchen did a great job cooking the corn, and of course, the wait staff, as always, did a fantastic job.

Oh, Jobie Walt, thanks for the beer!

Brian and the grounds crew team are doing a great job this season. When you see the crew, thank them! This goes a long way. Every one of the golf members is part of the grounds crew. We all need to fix divots, ball marks on the greens, and please rake the traps when you walk out of them. Please respect golfers trying to make their best score.

The summer is coming to an end, but it was wonderful golfing with the Ladies, we had so much fun! The Ladies’ last tournament was held on Tuesday, August 26th. We had a beautiful night for the Madame Tournament.

L a d i e s 9 & 1 8 H o l e

We ended July with our low net challenge featuring competitions for low front, low back, and low total scores. The deserving winners were:

Kris Sommer, Donna Cianciola, & Marcia Middleton, respectively.

Next, we participated in the "Sweet 16" challenge, where we were allowed to discard our two highest scores. Notably, Judy Turnbaugh from the purple tees and Mary Biemer from the gold tees delivered outstanding performances.

Finally, unlike the soaring temperature, we played a team low net. Our winning team was Kris Sommer, Judy Turnbaugh, and June Nicolette, who narrowly edged out Sue Kump, Lisa Lintecum, and Donna Cianciola in a card-off tiebreaker!

The 4 Club Bag challenge marked our official entry into August, with participants limited to four clubs and a putter for the round. Kris Somer and Mary Cupo secured the top net positions, subsequently sharing the winnings.

Following that, the "Sweet & Sour" challenge entailed combining the four best holes from the front and back nine with the worst hole of the round. Our winners, who were all within 1.5 strokes, were Kris Sommer, who took 1st place, Brenda Scott, who secured 2nd place, and Sue Brodie, who finished 3rd.

This year, we once again hosted the annual WGA Orioles Tournament at SPCC, and Kris
