Agronomy

After completing my first season here, I wanted to share some plans for the upcoming winter months and a quick recap of the past season.

As expected, the number of trees on the course makes leaf cleanup a significant task. Fortunately, we had over a week of strong winds that helped bring a large portion of the leaves down. Of course, there are always a few trees that like to hold onto their leaves well into the winter, so while we move forward with other projects, we’ll continue to stay on top of any additional leaf cleanup throughout the season.

Our main priority this offseason is tree removal. We have a lot of trees that are either at the end of their life, struck by lightning, and showing decline, in an area not suitable for growing turf, or other environmental factors that shorten a tree’s lifespan. The fairways on holes 6 through 10 are particularly affected by excessive shade from surrounding trees, which limits turf health and quality. As we look forward to future improvements to the course, strategic tree removal will be essential. This will help ensure that future investments-especially in new fairway turf- have the best possible conditions to thrive, ultimately improving overall playability.

Starting at a new Club always comes with a learning curve-getting familiar with the property, daily operations, and the resources available to get the job done. Beginning my first day with an irrigation installation added another layer to that adjustment. Completing the first half of the project and then immediately shifting into tornado cleanup made for a challenging stretch, but we managed to push through and move on to the next task.

I’ve been part of an irrigation installation before, and it always seems like the rain holds off until the moment the project is finished. This installation was no different, if not compounded by the tornado damage. Like many courses in the area, our greens were not spared by the beating this summer of heavy rain and high temperatures. For spring aerification, we have a sand drill and fill planned to help drainage on the greens. Fortunately, we finally received a break in the weather this fall, giving us ideal conditions for the sod we laid and the recovery of the seeded bare areas on greens.

Heading into next season, we’re in great shape to continue improving course conditions and the overall experience at the Club. From myself, Tater, and the grounds’ staff, we wish you a wonderful holiday season, and we look forward to an exciting and productive new year!

Senior Men’s Golf Group

Any male golf member is invited to play with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If you want to participate in our lunch tournaments (three picnics and three buffets), dues for 2026 remain the same - $110, with an additional $10 if you want to play in MISGA (Maryland Interclub Senior Golf Assn) events.

MGA members may play MISGA for just the $10 fee. We play five home and about ten away MISGA’s at courses such as Prospect Bay, Winters Run, Crofton, Hog Neck, and Hobbitts Glen.

The last Tournament for 2025, weather permitting, is the nine-hole Christmas Buffet on December 11th, with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. followed by lunch at 12:30 PM.

FRAN REESE

89 on 11/1, 87 on 11/04, 89 on 11/18

Did you know that the bottle on the golf carts is intended to be used to fill your divots?

On a recent round, I emptied six bottles and ran out each time before getting to the sand station. Also, I have raked multiple footprints in addition to my own in the bunkers. This is your course – treat it like you care!
